A BAD MAMA JAMA of Japanese take out. We dine in though because they always have sportscenter on the TV :)

The place itself is chissai (small). I'm talking belly button small. Only a few pieces of lint and maybe your finger can fit in there. It's very possible that you may have to enjoy your meal with some strangers foot on your lap. If that's not your type of deal, take out.  I'm friendly, so I don't mind ;)

Sakurai is operated by a family (my guess is that it's the Sakurai family). The times I've been there, the youngest runs the register while the eldest son does the cooking and the mom oversees the whole operation with precise motherly sternness. Service here is not lacking in any fashion.

The grinds here have got that homemade touch to it. That's if your mom is Japanese American;) They cater as well. They have something for everyone and all their needs. Sakura has more options than a fully loaded Lexus.  A heck of a lot cheaper too;)

The yaki soba (fried noodles) is good and is a hungy-lumberjack portion too. I mean they give you so much that if you were unlucky enough to get handed down the thinning hair gene, you can call it a day and shave it all off. Instead of getting those silly hair plugs, you can use the yaki soba as a replacement and no one would know the difference ;) http://www.yelp.com/bi...

The sukiyaki bowl is good. Though, the skirt steak they used for it was a bit tough. Definitely filling though. http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Their steak teppan is great for the price. It's definitely better than the more established disgraceful places that call themselves teppan grills. *ahem cough Chomp in DTF cough ahem*

One knock though, the times I've had their tempura I nearly asked for a jack hammer. Seriously, their batter is one step below granite.  I'll give it one more try before I write it off completely.

You won't experience culinary divinity here.  You're not supposed to.  It's a takeout place for goodness gracious.  That still doesn't get in the way of Sakurai delivering the homemade goodness with certified value.  Word up!

Hai itadakimasu~

PS..There's a tip jar labeled school fund.  Please leave a tip to help assure a young jedi gets his learn on.  Thanks.

This place is very good. The sashimi was very fresh. So is the chicken salad and teriyaki bowl. It is very budget friendly. Plus the food is great, so you can't beat that. The place is very small though. But of all the times I've been to it, it was never crowded and we never had a problem getting the seat.

I struggled between 3 and 4 stars.  Certain dishes like tempura or chicken katsu would be lucky to get 3 stars . . more like 2.  However they really do nice beef and chicken teriyaki bowls and teppan.  The teriyaki bowls are 5 bucks and are really good.  So that's why 4 stars.

My boyfriend and I were supposed to go to Subway but since he has a curry fetish we decided to try something new since it was just next door. I got the Teriyaki chicken bowl and my boyfriend got the Chicken katsu curry.

Very homey, small restaurant. There was only one cashier and one cook. I believe it is family owned since I overheard the cook mention his mother was sitting at one of the tables.

I expected to have my bowl filled with rice with steaming hot teriyaki sauce on top of the chicken, but was surprised when I recieved my order. I almost said it was the wrong one.

It was interesting. I was presented with a huge bowl of rice, chives, vegetable, tempura flakes, and chicken at the top. I didn't know what to do with it! So I begin my mixing the flakes with the chicken and chives and rice. It was actually pretty good. I didn't think there was any teriyaki sauce but discovered it at the bottom and mixed the entire bowl. I underestimated the bowl though and thought I could finish it all but got full after eating half. The flakes and chives go really well with the chicken and rice.

My boyfriend's curry was kind of watery and reminded me of the concoctions I'd try to make at home.

I don't really dig the enlarged menus that are framed on the wall like posters.

The food here is great and you can't beat the price.  The menu has a wide range of Japanese takeout from bowls, to curries, teppan, sushi, and some hawaiian.

The sashimi is really fresh and of high quality, definitely not something you get at a typical take out place.  The bowls are good, I like them for  the teriyaki sauce and tempura flakes.  A step up from your typical bowls at other places.  The wings and fried rice are great as well.  The menu has a lot of items so there is a wide variety to choose from.  The only con is the place is not very big so it's easy to miss and there is limited seating but give it a shot.

Name me another fast food style place that serves scallops.
Name me another place that has teppan that is good.
Name me another place that has a really cute cashier.
Name me another place that is Japanese owned and is relatively cheap and still really good.

Now, name me one place. Any place that has all of these things.

Sakurai. holler.

This place has some great grubs. For takeout prices you have a plethora of Japanese food selection, from Sushi to tempura to teppanyakki

I recommend the combo meals since the join has just a great selection.

Food tastes great, and the sushi is expensive restaurant quality (oddly).

I highly recommend!

Excellent food here! Very nice selection of different foods for such a small place. The prices are good for what you get. The quality of the sashimi is good, the wings are crispy and have a nice kick, I really enjoyed the teriyaki bowl! I've been more than satisfied the 2 times I've been here. I'll be back! I'd highly recommend this place!

I came here after reading Kristy N's blog (http://bestofla.blogsp...) and thought I would try this place. What I didn't think was I would come here the day after I read it. Nevertheless, its always an adventure to find a new place to eat. You know what I mean?

You have to take longer to look for the place and you have to take longer to decide what to order. Well, Kristy tried out the sashimi combo which I did too. To my surprise, for $10.95 you get quite a bit of sashimi. Don't expect sushi bar quality sashimi here though, it is not sliced perfect but it did stop my craving for fish. See here for picture (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)

Along with the other half of the combo came miso soup and a plate of salad and chicken teriyaki.  The salad came with some miso, vinegar, oil type dressing while the chicken was grilled and had a light sauce. What I didn't like here was they put both the salad and the chicken onto the same IKEA type white round plate. So you are basically eating a chicken teriyaki salad with a miso-teriyaki vinegrette. The rice came in a separate bowl.

In addition to our order, we tried the six piece chicken wings for $3.95 and a chicken katsu plate $6.95. The chicken was a bit blend for my taste, didn't feel like it was seasoned or marinated but it sure was pankoed and fried well.  We had all of this food and we ate inside one of their small round tables.  Let's just say lunch was like playing reverse Jenga.

I like the food, it tastes kinda like something home made. In fact, everything was made to order and everything tasted fresh. I do wish the tables were bigger and if the food will also come on bigger plates....and if the food was seasoned a little bit more. I am not high maintenance am I? If these changes are made, I would just make this a 5 star eatery. For now, it will be about 3.5 but since everything is clean inside here, it leans towards four stars. They take credit cards on orders over $5.

A while ago one of my really good friends took me here for lunch before I had to go serve a couple hours of detention (oh, high school...) and I really liked it. That chicken teriyaki bowl is damn good, and if I remember correctly it was only $4.50 and it filled me up. I gotta go back!

great food.  small, simple, clean, tasty.  these people do it right.  i guess its "fast food" but the quickness of service is the only "fast food" quality about it.  walk up, order, eat, happy.

I've been to this place a handful of times and the food is always great.  Whether its the Yakisoba or Steak Teppan I always find myself stuffed after a meal there with some cash still left in my pocket.
