Review from Bing D.
parking is difficult on this part of irving between 10th and 11th.
the guy inside is an incredibly nice and polite person. for that alone i love this store.
he's got little nick nacks that you can find for kids or just for fun. What i really like to find here is the asian snacks he has.
i've been to asian markets and this place has much better price for candy and snacks if you're into those kinds of asian snacks. I like the gummy fruit snacks and the fruit flavored hard candy. 2.49 for the hard candy and it goes for 3.99 to 4.99 at other stores.
he also has fruit flavore asian soda. 1.49 thats about a dollar or more cheaper than anywhere else also. -

This is a great little store, and I can't believe I haven't reviewed it yet. It's similar to ichiban kan or Daiso, but smaller, so understandably, you're not going to have the same selection. Unlike these stores, while Sakura has a lot of discount goods, they have some nicer imported items as well, which understandably cost more.
The owners are both super sweet, and this place has everything from Japanese groceries, to housewares, to bathrobes, to toys, etc. I've gotten myself a gorgeous red satin robe here, vegetarian miso paste, and, just yesterday, I finally broke down and joined the animal-hat trend after visiting. This place deserves all the business it can get. -

Totally love this little store. It's got a nice charm to it especially with all the snacks and candy! The shop lady is really nice and give you a very welcoming atmosphere. She'll chat for a bit with you if you're near the counter. There seems to be a lot of regular customers that comes in.
Some candy and snack examples:
Meji Chocolate (milk and black)
Yam Yams
Boten Rice Candy
Mochi Ice Cream
Wasabi Peas
Good Good Eats snacks
Various Japanese chips
Bag of Mixed Japanese crackers
Various gums like coffee gums
HI-CHEW!
Lot of various kasugai gummy candy bags
Green Tea
Wide selection of Calpico
Melon Soda
Other food stuff are cup/bag ramen, spices, and various sauces.
At the counter, there's some pre-made food that changes. I've seen mochi, sushi, and cake there. There's also a fridge for cold drinks nearby.
There's also a random stationary inside the store. Pens, pencils, lead, etc. Then there misc other stuff like bathroom stuff such as hair gel, make up, etc.
There's a small basket of hand made animal message cards here. It's a small basket near the door so it's very easy to miss, but it's definitely worth a look.
The store accepts credit card! -

I came here looking for some stationery, as I was in the mood to send an Engrishy card to a friend of mine. I ended up up being pleasantly surprised by a collection of hand-crafted paper cards decorated with cutesy cut-out animals. The woman in the store told me they were made by a local. Now that's a purchase I could feel good about!
I loved my card so much that instead of my usual procrastination, I promptly wrote my note and sent it off to my friend. For me to overcome my routine laziness (I've seriously purchased a card for someone before and procrastinated so long that I waited until their birthday the following year to send it), that's really saying something about the quality and appeal of the card.
They actually don't even specialize in stationery, so don't let my card-centric review skew your perception. They manage to pack a lot of variety into their tiny space. Their tiny space might be why they don't seem to mess around offering junk! -

Tiny tiny store where half of the shelves are stocked with random knickknacks from Japan. I was doubtful of its grocery value but boy I have been proven wrong over and over again.
Organic white miso?
Kewpie mayonnaise?
Okonomi sauce?
sheets of nori?
Whatever you need during your adventurous "I want to make an authentic Japanese dish NOW" moment, don't dread having to make a trip all the way to Japantown, try Sakura first. It may very well pleasantly surprise you! -

If you were to ask a bunch of people that live in the Sunset, I'm sure the vast majority wouldn't have any idea that a cute little gem like this even exists.
it's a small little hole in the wall type of joint, but they sell an impressive assortment of Japanese stuff. A lot of their shelves are devoted to food like ramen and snacks/candy, but they also have a small little freezer for frozen gyoza, and even a little refrigerated unit that sells small bento boxes and onigiri. So random, but pretty cool nonetheless!
Beyond the tasty treats, they also sell various items like bath products, stationary, clothes, and random other trinkets. In essence, the place is like a smaller version of Ichiban Kan, which is like a smaller version of Daiso. The workers are all super friendly and polite...couldn't ask for more. I don't know how it compares exactly, but I think the prices might be just a shade higher. If it is, the difference is negligible though, and it certainly beats having to head to J-Town or down the freeway. And besides, it's always nice to support small little shops like Sakura! Already looking forward to my next trip down to 9th Ave! -

What a sweet little store!
I had my nails done at High Touch Salon a couple of doors down the street and found myself wandering the (so clean, not a speck of dust in sight!) aisles of Sakura.
I was in search for these special cookies my little boy loves (cookie on the outside, filling on the inside) and they had them in 3 different fillings of chocolate, cream and strawberry. I bought 'em all.
The big find for me was this little tube of Japanese grapefruit face wash. I expected a liquid but even better, this was the consistency of a zinc paste with a slightly granular, exfoliating scrub. Heaven! My skin feels like a baby's butt.
(Those Japanese women with perfectly poreless complexions can't be wrong and my skin feels fresh and tingly, all for $3.99!!)
I can't wait to use it in the morning to "wake up" and they had it in different versions, from Amino Acid to Clay and more. That was a true find, for a fraction of the price ($3.99!!) for something "less than" at Kiehls that would be 5X the price. Pick some up for yourself and for Christmas gifts.
I picked up some special ramen noodles, cookies for my little boy, facial scrub and more little sundries, all for $15 and change. I'll be coming back for all of it and more.
Gentle on the pocketbook, chock full of little surprises and stocking stuffers. Run over here and pick up some unusual and wonderful stuff for yourself and friends.Listed in: If We Break Up, This is MY…

I love this place! The lady here is so nice, and they've got quite an array of neat Japanese foods and products.
My favorite thing about Sakura is it's ability to show you all the random little useful trinkets that you didn't know you needed until now.
As others have said before me, it's like a mini version of Ichiban Kan in Jtown. And who doesn't love The Kan?
Another major plus: they take credit/debit cards!!! Woohoo...way too many places around Sunset are cash only. I rarely carry much cash on me, so those places tend to lose my business. -

"Hi!!!!!!!!!!!!! How are you?????" These ecstatic words mark Michi's sighting of her favorite customer: me! Or is that she pretty much employs this much enthusiasm in greeting everyone? Probably the latter, but you'll find that it won't matter to you either when you hear it.
And that's how pretty much everything makes me feel at Sakura: enthusiastic, delighted and for once, lacking in cynicism. Here's a breakdown of some things Sakura has to offer:
- Amazingly low prices: Sure you might find a few of these "unique" items a couple streets down at Wishbone, Good Stuff (Accoutrements? I forget the name) or in Sunset's Chinatown (as I like to think of it), but you won't find it at a better price.
- Cute (this is an understatement) stuff: intricately detailed fruit and animal erasers (totally a necessity, of course), whimsically decorated tote bags, impossibly adorable stationary and dishware, an entire rainbow of snacks, and quirky cosmetics (you'll see... "paste" is the only hint I can give you).
Going to Sakura is like going over to a friend's place and digging through all of their cabinets- if your friend was the coolest scavenger of cheap & cute stuff.
"Byyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!" Can u feel my huge grin or what? -

I agree with many of the other yelp reviews of Sakura. I come here every time I'm in the SF area. The owner is super duper nice! I love all the cute random things they sell there (bags, tshirts, erasers, chips, various foods, etc... really random, but awesome!). The prices are unbeatable!
I will definitely continue to go back to Sakura every time I'm in SF. :) -
Review from Olivia L.
It's like Daiso, but more friendly, cleaner, and more convenient. Who really needs 8 different types of face poufs? Sakura carries the best one, so that's pretty much that. I love that it feels like a neighborhood convenience store right out of Japan -- and it got everything I needed plus some knockoff LeSportsac bags (branded simply as Sport) -- which I didn't need right at that instant, but maybe I'd need it for my next trip? And at $13, it wasn't much of a splurge either. I'll be back!

As you can tell by the ratings and reviews that Sakura is genuinely one of the hidden gems in the Sunset. It isn't big and it doesn't offer a huge selection of goods (mostly Japanese products) like the stores in Japantown, but it always has everything that I look for. And every time I walk by there, there's always something in the window, a little one of a kind item that catches my attention. The prices are reasonable, and the owner is delightful, which always makes for a great shopping experience.

This place rocks! The owners (husband and wife) are the kindest people you will ever meet. They are amazingly helpful and always happy to help you find something. If they don't have it, they can order it.. (yes, it would cost a little.. but I'm happy throwing money at these people)
I often shop in Japan Town for my housewares, but with Sakura there is no need.. I just walk the 15 or so blocks. -

Sakura is a great addition to the SUNSET=] The owners are so nice! I come by the store here and there and the owner always recognizes me. She's so nice!
I love Japanese merchandise! Here, you can find little knick nacks that are just way too cute! It's a mini store that offers a variety of office supplies, clothing, household items, beauty products, Sanrio items, and a great selection of FOOD! In particular, I like the little ice cream cups. I usually buy red bean. mmmm...=]
I haven't been here in awhile, but i do plan to when I get the chance. -

What a delightful store. Whether I'm buying a notebook or a handful of hair products, the store owner, Michi, treats me with kindness and shows enthusiasm in helping me. Excellent customer service.
I asked about some hair products that could tame my dry hair, and the recommendations worked. This is a place that appreciates the customer, and for that I'll be a returning customer. -

Sakura, a "Japanese Discount Store," is one of a handful of charming Japanese establishments located in the Inner Sunset neighborhood of what is, fittingly, Osaka's sister city.
Sakura's locale is quaint, its interior bright and colorful, its selection of Japanese goods endless and, most importantly, its proprietor warm, patient, and incredibly helpful. At Sakura not only can you find all manner of Japanese items - from those delicious seaweed-wrapped rice triangles and fixins' for sushi and tempura (sans fish and vegetables, though you'll be directed to the best local Japanese markets for both) to high-quality stationary and random furry things - but also everything is easily discoverable thanks to its delightful staff of one.
A trip to Sakura will make even the most bitter melon saccharine. Point in case, my original ending to this review: "Indeed, thanks to Sakura's glowing Japanese charm, the "sun's origin" brings brightness to the Sunset!" -

This cute little Japanese store is so hidden on Irving Street, I didn't even know it was here until we parked right in front of it one day on our way to lunch.
Items you would find at Daiso like Japanese snacks, ramen, kitchen utensils, bath & body products, stationary can be found here. Some Hello Kitty/Sanrio products, too. They also have a very small refrigerated section with frozen takoyaki and a frozen desserts. All very reasonable priced. The employees are super friendly, too! -

The owner is very sweet. I came in here when they first opened and was excited that there might be matcha powder for baking my very favorite Green Tea Pound Cake. It wasn't there and she told me she would order some and begin stocking it. When I returned, her promise was not empty. I now have a store that provides me with the main ingredient of my very favorite cake. T

This little Japanese shop is crammed with goods, even with things hanging off the ceiling. Some of the merchandise is quite similar to what you'd find at Ichiban Kan (they had the same lunch sets) crossed with what you'd find at Super Tokio. The owner is Japanese (from some part that doesn't eat natto) and very sweet.
About half the store is devoted to grocery items - fresh sushi and rice balls, frozen food (the best sellers are ice creamy, gyoza, and natto), ramen, Pocky, and Hi Chew. The Pocky and Hi Chew selection is excellent (yes, they have Hi Chew Durian). They also have kimonos, a Hello Kitty/Sanrio section, containers, socks, toys, tights, tee shirts, slippers, bath & body items, notebooks, barrettes, earrings and keychains.
The prices range from $1 and up. It's not a 100 yen store but everything does seem to be discounted. For example, they had some cute croissant tote bags for $18 that usually retail for $22.
My picks:
* Ninja t-shirts and beanies for kids - who doesn't like ninjas?
* Tohato caramel corn (vanilla flavor) - yum
* Dog and frog knit hats for kids
It's the only Japanese discount store in this part of town and you could probably find most of what they have elsewhere but the prices are reasonable and they have a little bit of everything. -
Review from Roy N.
Walked through the door and suddenly, I was transported in time to my last business trip to Japan. What a great little store and in such an unexpected place! Who'd have thought something like this would open up in a location like this...not in a million years.
Was expecting to be the first to Yelp as I thought this was a brand new place, but looking at all the Yelps starting in May, I guess it's been around for a few months already. I hope word gets around as this is a real gem of a little Japanese store. The person working behind the register was incredibly nice, friendly, and helpful...she really made the place.
Everything is reasonable and inexpensive so it's fun to walk around and browse all the cute little things they have as well as food and snack items. Think of this place as being like Ichiban Kan, but smaller, yet better. This place is authentic in every way, right down to the background music.
Hope they do well...they really need to advertise or get on television. -

When I walked in the woman enthusiastically greeted us, I LOVE GREAT SERVICE. I walked around and looked at every little thing. Since it's such a small store, I didn't want to miss anything!! There were all these different snacks and candies that I have never seen before.
I wanted to get a whole bunch of snacks; but I refrained and only got about $13 worth of stuff? I'm not sure. The BF was looking around and he really wanted to get this ball with a cat inside. No idea why.. but he found it interesting, so okay.
I got caramel milk and milk coffee pocky! I haven't tried it yet because it's so cute I'm just letting it sit around, and I got some chips that are really cute....
OMG AND THESE WATERMELON CANDIES THAT I GOT. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THEY WERE JUST LIKE HI-CHEWS BUT ONCE I ATE THEM THEY HAD LITTLE BALLS OF JELLY INSIDE. I WILL POST A PICTURE! -

I walked by this store today seeing some cute stationary and stuff in the window display and decided to look around.
Looking around, I see the same items from Ichiban-Kan -but they jack up the prices.. what a shame.
Some things are cute, but I think the prices are a little too much. -

Whhheeeeee!!!!!
OMG! What a gem! On my way to peapod fabric my bf suggests that we go in he guaranteed that I would love this store.
OMG! OMG! OMG! I didn't think I can overuse the OMG but I will in this post!!!
I kinda felt like I was in a quaint suburban neighborhood in Japan. Did I hop on a plane and not know it?! Basically it reminds me of a 100 yen shop (price adjusted to $$ including freight and exchange rate). It is a neighborhood one stop shop of sorts. It is small. But they have an assortment of goods. My eyes widened in awe. I wanted to curl up in a ball in the corner to take it all in!!!!
I was pressed for time...so I had to do a quick walk through. I will definitely be back for more things that I do not need....just because it is cute!
SNACKS, kitchen gadgets, office goods, t-shirts, body cleansers, face wash...the list goes on....
Oh and the "mama-san" is too cute! She reminds me of a nice, sweet, and approachable version of my mother. Super friendly and chatty! She gets super excited if you speak japanese too!! So say "konnichiwa" when you stop in! -

Sakura is a small, cramped, tacky store filled with a number of Japanese products ranging from essential to frivolous. The anime-banners I could leave, but the budget-priced stationary, the cheap junk food, and the basic Japanese kitchen supplies makes for an instant win in my book. Some of my women friends went absolutely gaga over cute things like their slippers or tupperware containers. Plus, the essentials of Japanese cooking ingredients really help fill in the missing gaps of other neighboring markets of the Inner Sunset.
I find myself wishing Sakura were bigger. Even so, the variety and density of items is impressive given the establishment's small size. There's a little sign up in the window when I went promising bento boxes in the near future - which makes for an equation that could easily bump this place up to a solid five stars if executed correctly. A comparison to the infamous Ichiban might not be far off, but Sakura's size is tailored for the surrounding community and has far more character and personality. The owner is adorable, friendly, and helpful to a fault. I really hope this place thrives in the future and recommend anyone in the area to stop by and give Sakura's wares a browse. -
Review from Kylie L.
Sakura is like the Ichiban Kan's & Daiso's of the world, but it seemed like somethings cost a bit more, a little bit more.
There wasn't much that I wanted, just got a pretty small box.
The cashier is nice & spoke in Japanese to me...I don't know any...good thing she spoke to me in English after, maybe I looked confused to her. I guess if you wanted to practice your Japanese, you could talk to her. -

Unlimited pocky, Japanese instant bowl ramen and japanese stationary are just a couple of fabulous things you'll find in this store.
The store is small but packed full of different goodies. I've gotten scented highlighters here for $1.79, mochi ice cream, seaweed crackers and these stationary paper clips that I love! The owner of the store, like everyone else has said, is super friendly and she always greets me with a smile when I come in.
If you live in the neighborhood and haven't checked out this store yet, you definitely should!! -

This little shop has a great vibe! The owner is sweet and utterly welcoming. Every time I visit, she goes out of her way to accommodate me. I needed a birthday gift for my daughter's friend and I found a collection of sweet toys and purses, all very reasonably priced. Also, I picked up some incredible shrimp shumai and miso dressing-both very fresh and MSG-free!
Quality, kindness, and CLASS!!! -attributes that not every business possesses! Once again: Attitude is EVERYTHING! -

Clean, cheaply priced, well-kept and full of Japanese-style hospitality.
Sakura is a $1-2 store full of candies, snacks, stationary, household items (towels, socks, toys, utensils), knick knacks, etc. One might think that it's another Irving "junk" store, but you can immediately differentiate their Japanese goods from the "Made in China" items elsewhere.
Definitely worth a stop if you're grabbing a meal in this dining corridor and strolling around. -

Stores like this make me envy the Sunset. I live in the Richmond and although we have Super Tokio, it's not nearly as intimate as this shop. Sakura crams a pleasant variety of Japanese goodies onto their shelves, making it a delight to walk through. I left happily with a few pairs of chopsticks, instant noodles, whole grain noodles, and a pack of pocky.

today i was in this store for the first time. my only intention was to purchase mochi. instead, i came out with a bag full of japanese goodies, $28 dollars worth:
box of green tea ice cream mochi
genmai tea
milk candies
2 pairs of cute japanese slippers
squirt bottle
apple scented car air freshener
organic green tea soy milk
large bag of snow pea crisps
furikake
yay, HAPPY!
it's the teeny miniature version of Daiso with teeny tiny prices to match.

Sakura is a great little store for buying inexpensive Japanese stuff - snacks, plastic containers, stationery, toys - most of the things you'd get at Ichiban Kan in Japantown.
If you are shopping in the Inner Sunset, walk on down to Sakura and pick something up. You can then keep walking to San Tung or Yummy Yummy while you're there or get a Tom's Peasant Pie.
You will be able to find something cute or weird at Sakura!
PLUS the owner is SUPER nice and friendly - exactly the sort of person who deserves everyone's business. Yay! -

HI MICHI!!!!!!!!! =)
This review is going to be just a bit biased since this place is walking distance from my parents' house. For me, it's a great alternative to Ichiban Kan in J-town and it's in a MUCH better neighborhood. (hey, you don't have to worry about your car getting broken into here in the boring old Sunset district!)
Yes, the store is significantly smaller than Ichiban-Kan. However, they carry comparable merchandise at very comparable, if not even a bit cheaper, prices. And seriously... how sweet and loveable is Michi (the owner)? She even saved boxes from her shipments for me when she found out that I was moving. I wish there was a Sakura with a Michi in it here in LA. =(
I'm going to go here and hit them up for dishware for my apartment.

Literally one of the best stores ever. If you've ever been to Mitsuwa or Marukai or know anything like those Japanese supermarkets, Sakura is basically a miniature sized version of them. Very miny. However, they stock a LOT of stuff, and they ask you for what do you think they should sell.
Awesome store, TOTALLY recommend it. -

The woman who owns this store is LOVELY. She is so nice, and always willing and excited to show you the new goodies in the store.
She alone would make me want to shop here, the fact that they have so much awesome stuff under one tiny roof is just icing on the cake.
Some of my favorite finds? The best eyelash curler I've ever used, for $1.50. (I work at Sephora, you guys, and this one was way better than any other ones I've tried). Pearl soy milk in green tea and coffee flavors for about half of what Walgreens sells it for. Taro and green tea mochi, also less than other places. Naive (haha) body soap, tempura chips, a pink Hello Kitty pill box, and Golden Curry. All cheaper than anywhere else!
Love love love. -

I was sooo tempted to buy a sllk kimono here because they were so pretty and only cost $15!!!
Sakura took over a popular tailor shop a little over 5 months ago and filled the store with the cutest knick-knacks. You can find a spam musubi maker, Gatsby hair gel, silk kimonos, hello-kitty stationary, japanese snacks, pocky, ramen, office supplies, etc. You can find what you're looking for without having to make your way across Golden Gate park to Clement or down south to Daiso.
The owner is also super cute! My bf and I wanted to purchase an air freshner on display because they were all sold out of the scent we wanted. We were willing to pay full price, but the owner gave us a discount without us asking! How sweet! I'll definitely be coming back again...because I'm eyeing that kimono =) -

Clean, cute, friendly workers, and cheap. The place is a pretty much like DAISO except has more of that Japanese Convenient store feeling. It is nice to find a place like this because for some reason it feels authentic to me. I have been in Japan and their convenient stores and just the vibe of this reminds me of Japan.

What a delightful little gem in the sunset! Sakura is a cute little Japanese store that comes stocked with a random assortment of things you may or may not need (but by god, you will spend a chunk of time looking at them anyway!). They have handy grocery items for making your own sushi and other Japanese dishes, a refrigerator full of snacks and Japanese drinks, random and delightful hats and mittens (I am the proud owner of mittens with tiger faces and a bear hat, courtesy of Sakura), cheaply-priced beauty and hair products that I'm quite curious about, etc. I could spend a long time in this little store just soaking in its little wonders. The owner is also very warm and nice and makes coming into this little store an all around wonderful experience.
