Sakonnet Vineyards
4 reviews for Sakonnet Vineyards
I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to visit Little Compton on a yearly basis, and even more fortunate that my in-laws live down the road from Sakonnet Vineyards. It's definitely one of the prettiest places I've had the pleasure to visit.
Whenever we're out in LC we start our day with a 1 mile walk to the vineyard with the dogs, who love running up the road and thru the pond. It's set back off of Main Rd. and opens into the most picturesque place you've ever seen. It's a fantastic spot for weddings, parties, any special event.
We try to stop in every time we're out East and in the summer we're there at least twice: once for lunch at the Coop Cafe, and another time for a wine tasting, and then we take a bottle outside and enjoy the warm air and surroundings. The wine selection at Sakonnet is quite good and reasonably priced. Our favorite is the Gewurztraminer, with the cab franc in close second.
If you are in Providence or Boston or Newport, you would be remiss if you didn't make a side trip to Little Compton and visit. It's no more than 40 minutes from downtown Providence, providing traffic is good.

Sakonnet Vineyards is beautiful and has a great selection of wines to choose from. It was pretty busy when we visited back in August, but not crowded. The tasting included a wide range of wines, and if you're not a wine expert (as I am not), you'll find the staff very knowledgeable and helpful. I will definitely go there again!
The oldest winery in the state.
They have a nice tasting room, an interesting winery tour and beautiful grounds you can stroll around. Nice spot for a wedding or other special event.
The wine is good. No complaints. I really liked the Guwurtz and the dessert wine. Some of the wines are getting expensive now but I guess the word is out.
Well worth the visit even though it is SO FAR, FAR AWAY from Providence. Rhode Island distance-phobics.

in a word, beautiful.
definitely the most picturesque of the vineyards i've been to in rhode island, but not the best. it would be fantastic for events, but is pretty far out of the way. i would think if i were doing an event here, i'd also have to factor in some dough to rent busses to get everyone there and back.
the wine is good, but pricey. compared to the other vineyards sakonnet's wines are going to run you about $5 - $10 more per bottle - about $15 - $30 per bottle. while the wine is good, it's not as good as the offerings at newport vineyards nor is the selection as vast (my "pricey" rating is relative). also, the "tour" of the vineyard consists of a video. skip it. just head inside for the tasting.
if you're doing a rhode island vineyard tour, sakonnet is not way out of the way, but i would say this place is off the beaten path, so find them online first and follow their directions. they have good signage, but anybody driving that far down a dirt road could start to question even the most detailed directions.
