Sajjcol Salon
4 reviews for Sajjcol Salon
3.5 stars
This place was recommended by one of my buddies, who always gets her hair cut here, by stylist Jimmy Au. Disclaimer: I usually get my locks trimmed by the $12 Vietnamese place, so I wasn't sure what to expect!
I called and made an appointment for later in the afternoon. Jimmy works Tuesday - Sunday and has Mondays off. I parked around the corner, because I didn't know where it was, but they actually have a few spaces in front. It is on the corner of Garvey and Chandler - very easy to find.
First, they lead you to the changing room, where you put a poncho-like thing over your clothes. Then, you are led to the sink for hair washing and a head/neck massage. The lady who helped me out was nice, but she spoke minimal English and Cantonese. The hair washing was a pleasant experience. She took her time to massage my scalp, the shampoo smelled great, and even asked if the water temperature was okay. My hair is quite long and she treated it gently.
Next, your hair is wrapped in a towel, then you're taken to the cutting station. The Mandarin hair washing lady offered me an iced tea and a choice of magazines (English or Chinese). How thoughtful! And up until this point, I ONLY spoke English to them. So, I respectfully disagree with the reviewer who said they treat English speakers poorly. I wasn't dressed fancy, either. Just wearing a tank top and flowery skirt with a simple canvas tote grocery bag to carry my stuff.
Jimmy introduced himself, then asked what sort of cut I would like. I wanted most of it hacked off, layered, since my hair is incredibly thick. He convinced me to get some bangs as well. Jimmy spent about an hour shaping the dense mass that is my hair. Quite enthusiastically. LOL, it must have been a challenge, since I could hear him grunting slightly. You could tell he enjoys his work. We chatted a little in Cantonese. More patrons filtered in. Some spoke Mandarin and one guy was chatting about restaurant recommendations in English with his hair stylist.
So, you're wondering, how did my hair end up looking? I thought it was cute, very "Asian", but I don't have another $40 hair cut to compare it to. Another reviewer said it is expensive, but it's really not that bad considering the time/effort these people put into each hair cut. I gave him a $10 tip. He didn't try selling me any products, but the front desk ladies tried to get me to come back for a facial.
Would I go back here? That depends. Let's see how many people notice my new 'do. ;)
If you don't speak mandarin or cantonese, don't bother coming here. The staff asked if I was Chinese, embarassed that my spanish is probably better than my chinese, I said I was Vietnamese. Half lie.
After I I met Sam, the stylish my cousin reccomended, I was practically dragged to the wash station by a very rude and hoity-toity assistant. She asked if I spoke chinese and I said, No I don't. Then she said something in Chinese under her breath that really turrned me off to this salon. The comment was something along the lines of, "Oh my god, chinese? and can't even speak the language?!?!"
The there was the cut. It was ok, nothing I can't get somewhere else cheaper. Sam's english was also pretty bad. So i sat there trying to focus on my magazine to make it a less akward situtation.
Overall, Never coming back. $40 for a wash and trim? Not worth it.
Sajjcol Salon is located right on the corner of Chandler and Garvey.
I love this place. I got my prom hair done here and have been coming here ever since, which is about six years. I usually ask for Cynthia because we just connect. I love chatting with her while she cuts my hair. She's really detail with her cuttings and my hair always looks fab when she's done.
The assistants that they hire to wash your hair gives amazing head massages.
The only down side of this place is that they're not very good at coloring.
If you're looking for a fab hair cut, this is the place to get it done. They serve drinks. Now if they served cup noodles and Oreos, I would be in heaven (some of you know what I mean).
This place sucks. No one speaks english and this guy Sam who cut my hair couldn't cut straight if he put a bowl over his customer's head and trimmed around it. Everyone raves about the 'scalp massage' you get when they shampoo your hair but they use really cheap products so it probably ends up causing more damage to your hair than doing any good.
