UM YUM YUM IN MY TUM TUMMM.

My cousin brought me to this little spot of heaven this past weekend. Got the #1, medium spicy. It is rare that you find a large sandwich, packed full of deliciousness that doesn't leave you feeling like you want to pass out after eating it. The sandwich was incredibly fresh and tasty, service was really quick and friendly! I am new to the Vietnamese sandwich game, but I must say that I am usually afraid of trying new things. But Saigon was sweet, and gentle to me. tehe

I am looking forward to trying some spring rolls...........!!

I lived near this sandwich shop for several months and made sure to stop by at least once a week. The owner of this place is adorable, super friendly, and always remembers to say hello!

I usually order a chicken banh mi but have also tried some of the veggie options like the curry "chicken" bahn mi or the lemongrass "chicken" banh mi - all three are delicious!

For under $5 in this part of Manhattan - this is a steal. You get a HUGE filling sandwich that's full of fresh ingredients on a piping hot crusty crunchy baguette - plus it's a great neighborhood spot so it feels good to support a local small business owner. Make sure to stop by the connected juice shop next door - they sell freshly squeezed juices for insanely low prices.

Didn't think a meal could be this bad...but it was.

Ordered the #10 house specialty vegetarian, which was supposed to have tofu, mushroom, carrots and sweet radish.  Confirmed that I wanted it hot.

What I received was a lightly toasted Italian bread - not baguette - with perhaps one mushroom slice chopped into ten or so pieces.  The tofu?  The volume of the tofu was about the size of a cigarette, if that much.  Just check my photo, please.

    It wasn't spicy, either.

When the server saw I was upset and I commented on the lack of tofu, she said that I should have ordered one of the other vegetarian sandwiches because they contain more tofu (!).  Oh, so it was my fault.

Pretty much threw out everything and commented that I was very disappointed with my order.  Server apologized but did not offer any alternative.

Really tried to find a way to upgrade this review to two stars but I couldn't.  Only my second one-star review, out of over 350, and that says a lot.

My friend introduced me to this place.  This place is serious... $5/sandwich ..where else are you going to get that (don't say subway because that doesn't even compare)?

I would have given 5 stars but only complaint is the bread.   The bread at times is too dense and sometimes stale.   This would have definitely been a 5, if the bread was truly a french baguette.  I haven't yet figured out what day bread is delivered but when I figure it out I will repost.

Just ok here. Is it bad? No. Definitely not comprable to Banh Mi Saigon. You can't get full off the sandwiches here. If your a vet at this game then you'll go down the block and grab the best at Banh Mi Saigon. If you're a newbie, student, rookie to the culture and it's your first viet sandwich then this place will work for you. If my momma won't eat here then it's not for me.

As a vegetarian I can't comment on the regular sandwiches, but my friends seem to enjoy them which is why I'm giving it three stars instead of two.. and I like to support family run shops.

This time last year this little sandwich shop had some ultra tasty veggie banh mi subs with the best spicy mayo almost hollandaise-like concoction.

Went back last weekend and it was a sad sad day..

Now I'm pretty sure all four of the veggie sandwiches are the same sandwich (the ingredients are not what is actually listed on the board.) I had to ask for the mayo sauce because despite it only listened on the menu as not in the vegan sandwich the girl said that now none of the veggie sandwiches have it. To top it off she just gave me a smear of plain mayo on a napkin from a giant tub in the back. GROSS. haha.

Also, I'm nearly a 100% sure that they use the same baguettes on all the sandwiches which contain egg, thus the "Vegan" sandwiches are definitely NOT VEGAN *heads up* for all you vegan kiddos out there!

    Another simple/short review.

This was my first time to Saigon Vietnamese Sandwich Deli and since it was a nice day and my office wasn't too far away, I decided to take a stroll on over.

It's a small shop and if you're not careful, you might miss it.  Since this was my first time trying Vietnamese sandwiches, I purchased 2, the bahn-mi and the chicken sandwich.

The sandwiches were good, although the chicken one was more to my liking. The bread was toasty, crunchy, and hot which nice and the price was nothing to complain about. A great deal. If you're in the area, dish out a couple bucks and try a sandwich. It just may make you smile.

My family has been ordering #1 from here for years, I personally haven't been there until a month ago.  It's got the best banh mi in nyc area!  Baguette itself is very fresh, although sometimes they made it a little too crunchy for me, i love the fact the filling is very generous with good amount of marinated veggies inside. unless i'm very hungry, half bahn mi usually filled me up.

When i finally visited the shop last month, it was already renovated, it looks pretty clean small shop, and front part of the store was sublet to other vendor.  it's got very few bar seats if you wanna eat there. they also serve Vietnamese desserts and buns. Lastly, the price went up a little bit compared to prior renovation but still consider cheap eat. I will highly recommend it to everyone!

Am I just a banh mi snob, or are all these places in Chinatown overrated? I've had much better Vietnamese sandwiches in Brooklyn!

Came here hungry at 4pm, got the #1 spicy pork sandwich. Sat down to eat on a very uncomfortable counter (wasn't really a counter since there was no leg space, more like a storage drawer). There was some weird smell to either the bread or the wax wrapper (hard to describe, but it reminded me of a 99 cent store with cheap imported goods... you know, THAT smell).

Anyway, I was underwhelmed. It was hot, but the sandwich looked pretty small and I couldn't get over the smell. The girl at the counter also looked like she was just punching the clock.

Good drink selection though. But the quest for banh mi continues!

THE place to go for viet sandwiches in CT. Reasonably priced, delicious, friendly. Around $5/sandwich. Been coming here for years. I remember when their sandwiches used to be $3.75. Hate it when word spreads and it becomes a popular eat and then the price jacks up...yet again I also love it bc that means I probably know how to eat.

Was not expecting a $4 sammy from a deli with the ambiance of a laundromat to blow my mind, but it did.  Can taste every fresh ingredient in the oversized #1, traditional Bahn-Mi.  Don't be a punk, get it spicy.  Usually it's so good that I order another (#3 or #7) or mix it up with the (non-veggie) spring rolls.

There's a full menu bubble tea bar on the other side of the deli, if you're into that sort of thing.

Probably my go-to place for Bahn-mi in New York, but definitely not the best. The sandwiches are cheap and the store is simple and no-nonsense. I always order the vegetarian sandwiches which are OK. In my opinion they use too much bread (don't put egg in them like in Vietnam) and they never make it spicy enough but I always end up finishing it so it must be somewhat good. The sandwiches are all around $5 or under which makes it a win-win situation for all involved!

Take the sandwich and walk east past Bowery to the park on Chrystie St & Broome if it's nice outside...

This is the best Bahn-Mi I've had in the city. I've tried other Vietnamese deli/shops around Manhattan and Brooklyn but nothing touches Saigon.

It's the cheapest and freshest Bahn-Mi in NY. I always get the #3-Minced Pork Glaze-Spicy. The spice definitely enhances the flavor of the sandwich and gives it a good kick. The size of the sandwich is great as well. It comes on a warm, fresh baguette, that is soft, crunchy, and flaky all at the same time. One sandwich will fill you up for sure.

The service and atmosphere are great as well. Most the time there is barely or no line, depending on your timing. Sandwiches come out within minutes and the employees are always smiling and helpful. There are two small counter spots to eat at inside, and a television that is usually playing sports.

If you enjoy outdoor seating they have 4 black chairs right in front of the shop. This is my favorite spot to indulge on a Bahn-Mi. Just sit and watch the happenings of Little Italy/Chinatown, from the mix of people walking in and out of the shop, to the fire fighters backing there huge truck back into the firehouse. There is never a dull moment.

For the price ($4.50), quality, and experience you can't ask for anything better!

Good is an understatement for this shop. The sandwiches here are great!! You must, however, get the sandwiches in spicy though. If you can't eat spicy, it is one thing but the spiciness always enhances the flavor of the sandwich. Their sandwiches, in my opinion, taste better spicy anyways.

I don't eat meat (boring I know) so I usually order the spicy veggie one. The flavor is just right and the bread is nicely toasted. I'm not sure what seasoning they use. It must be a secret but it's really what makes the sandwich special. I have to go on a quest for that recipe now. :-)

I used to come here often for lunch and this one sandwich will keep me full for the rest of the day. From what I've heard, the pork one is the most popular and most tasty one for all the meat eaters out there. :-) While I personally never ate the pork one, I would say that all their sandwiches are great no matter which you choose.

One thing you should not skip on is the coconut drink. It costs about $3 a but it is authentic coconut juice with flavor that is so refreshing, that will keep you coming back to this place just for that drink. It's especially refreshing on summer days. I think that coconut drink is the real highlight of the store. I admit that sometimes I only come to this store for the coconut drink and nothing else. Now that I told you about it, go and get it!

I have frequented may Bahn-Mi shops in the city, and this is by far the best one i have been to.  Their sandwiches are twice the size of other stores, twice as delicious, and half the price.  It is a perfect place to go on a nice day to grab a sandwich, and hang out on a street that is still a little bit of the old New York.

This is exactly what a Bahn-Mi store should be like.  It is not fancy at all, it is inexpensive, and it is fast.

I normally go for the Number 1 (the classic Bahn-Mi) but they have a vast menu including vegetarian sandwiches, which a lot of the other Bahn-Mi shops do not have.

House special sandwich: Oh how I love thee let me count the ways...
When I first walked into this place I gave a quick scan at the menu and the visual of how the sandwich was put together(looked simple enough) a little bit of pork, carrots, some green STUFFS(veggies omg) and a cucumber guarding the outer edge of the warm soft bread.  It wasn't a massive sandwich by any means, but it was AWESOME! I asked for it spicy and spicy it was(though it wasn't spicy throughout the whole sandwich, it was spicy in spots)...It's been a long time since I had a wedge and was that satisfied! And all for $4.50!

After walking around the city for about 2 hours passing up various foods(I knew what I wanted) I headed back and got a second one to take home. This one was spicy throughout the whole wedge...I will definately be stopping there every time I head down in that direction..which I will now make sure is more often!

So happy I was finally able to try this place!! I had the Bò Bía Chay - Vegetarian summer roll and another similar roll with shrimp in it. The veggie summer roll was delicious and the peanut sauce that came along with it was the perfect accent. The roll had jicama and basil in it, the flavor combo was out of this world! My friend got one of the meat sandwiches and also really enjoyed it. For the three things it was $13 and well worth it. The shrimp roll was $4.75 and the veggie roll was $4.50 and my friends meat sandwich was $5. Cheap and delicious!

Good food for sure and I will return which is unusual for me! Quick service as well. Small little spot and it was somewhat crowded when we were there. We were able to snag two chairs outside and enjoy our food the minute it was handed to us. There is also a smoothie stand right next door that also seemed to be pretty busy. Going to have to try that the next go around!

This is my favorite Bahn Mi shop in NYC.  I have not found a better shop in the past four years since I have been going to this place.

My favorites sandwiches on their menu is the number one and three.  You cannot go wrong with either one.  I like to get them spicy.

The park on the corner of Mulberry and Spring st is a good place to sit and eat a Bahn Mi on a nice day.  On two different occasions I gave directions to passers-by who were wondering where I got the amazing looking sandwich that I was eating.

First stop on the Taste of Nolita Fest! What a better way to start FEAST MODE by eating a Bahn Mi!

This is a no frills spot and it seemed quite a popular one. We watched the ebb of regulars, tourists and other Dealist people while we ate ours by the window. The t.v on one corner where a young host was teaching children English was amusing. Mind the subway platform!

What was supposed to be a small tasting role of their spicy pork roll was actually half of a baguette. Much bigger than I expected so I was happy! The sandwich overall was good - the veggies fresh and abundant, the pork was sweet and the bread soft.

The young lady behind the counter asked if she could take a picture of my friend and I to put on their Facebook page hahaha They have a Facebook page? No way.

    These puppies are BIG!

For less than $5 you can get a HUGE sandwich stuffed with meat and veg goodies. My favorites are the #1 Original House Special and #3 Grilled Minced Pork with Sweet Glaze.

They also offer a few Vegan/Vegetarian Banh Mi's, Spring Rolls, Summer Rolls, Salads, and Freshly Squeezed Juices.

Their juices are packed with flavor and very affordable. This place is seriously CHEAP EATS.

They get a 1.5 star deduction because the last time I had their Banh Mi, the bread was WAY too hard. I love toasty baguettes, but this was rock hard. However, I have eaten at this place a few times now and this was the ONLY time the bread was a disappointment. I really hope that this doesn't happen again.

This was my first stop for the tastes of Nolita tour.
I was expecting 1/4 of a bahn mi as a sampling but couldnt beleive my eyes at the huge half they served.
I ordered the spicy pork bahn mi that was not spicy at all. But then again, i have had some bahn mi that were so spicy i didnt enjoy it. THe absence of spice was fine for me. I enjoyed it immensely.
My guests tried the chicken bahn mi. I nabbed a bite- liked it but the pork was way better.

I have been on a quest to find the best Banh Mi place in the city short of Brooklyn(Sunset Park) and I think I might have found the best so far followed by Paris Bakery.

The regular is made just the way I think Banh Mi is made... just right. The down is that they don't bake their own bread like Paris but that can be overlooked from the awesome sandwiches that they make at a great price. They also carry an assortment of other Vietnamese dishes that are just as good. I'm definitely a fan.

I love that their regular banh mi comes with pate. I can't never get enough of the pickled vegetables. AWESOME. It's a tiny little counter here. I feel like there is so much merchandise in the store to look at. I feel claustrophobic sometimes in here.

All kinds of sticky rice cakes and dessert things that I have no name for. Banana flavored sticky rice cake thingies. Yum reminds me of my "My Melody/Little Twin Star" erasers from when I was in elementary school. The erasers smelled like banana.

    It's most definitely cheap here.

But, sorry, I found Saigon Bahn Mi on Grand Street and it is waaaaaaay better. I get their #1 with pate. The place on Grand Street is getting more expensive so many I'll go back to the place here on Broome.....MAYBE. If they run out of bread on Grand....this is my 2nd go-to place. Cool.

Whenever I enter a Banh Mi spot for the first time, I tend to order their "#1", assuming that's their combo or house special or most-prized or most-popular sandwich. I did the same here. As I waited for my order, I admired their vegan and vegetarian options. I then studied their diagram of the contents of Banh Mi with English descriptions of each item. Ugh, how dare they take the mystery out of Vietnamese sandwiches? I love it when newbies are left to wonder about what they're about to consume...if they consume.

    Now...the sandwich:

    Baguette:
Exterior was excessively hard due to over-baking and not that intentional hard, with the crispy glaze. The bread as a whole was soft, but not that fresh, chewy soft, more like a flat soft. I don't know how to explain it, but if you've had good French baguettes before, then you'll know what I mean.

    Meat:
Decent variety, but contents were light. I felt the meat-to-bread ratio was off. I needed a tad bit more meat.

    Sauce:
Alright, I'll give it to them on that. They have a phenomenal sauce: sweet, salty, tangy, aromatic! My first few bites of the sandwich were disappointing, but a few bites in, it started to grow on me. I credit the sauce for that.

Overall, eh, I think they're alright. Zagat and Yelp seem to love them, according to the stickers on their window. I guess its neutral enough to be enjoyed by the masses, BUT their business card boasts having "The Most Authentic Vietnamese Sandwich in Town." Um...I'm going to have to disagree with that. I doubt the masses can truly appreciate the fatty, chewy, and gelatinous contents of the Real Deal. How funny! The "Saigon Sandwich" in San Francisco is also loved by Zagat and Yelp (daily line-out-the-door love)...and I also think their sandwiches are watered down versions of the authentic stuff.

I guess the rule of thumb is:
If you see "Saigon" in the business name, you can rest assure the authenticity is tame.

Good banh mi (or any good Asian food, really) just does not exist in DC. While I crave Asian food on a daily basis, for some reason banh mi topped the list in the past few weeks. So when I met up with mom for a mini-vacation to NYC - to visit family, shop, and eat, of course - we made finding banh mi a priority.

After a long day of wandering around SoHo, we made our way over to this place, having seen its good Yelp reviews. We both got #1's with all the fixins. The sandwich was satisfying; it was tasty, fresh, and the ingredients were proportioned well. But it was just that - good, but not great. And the "spicy" was not that spicy - definitely didn't see any jalapeños in there. Oh well, probably better that way, since the green tea milk bubble tea I got from next door wasn't very good - I was in no rush to gulp it down.

Not sure if it was worth going out of our way for. But I will give Saigon one thing - the best thing about the sandwich was the perfect, perfect bread - crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, and warm throughout!

I came here and had the regular banh mi (called the house special). This is a very basic place. It is just a counter with four stools near the window.
The banh mi is only $4.25 and it is a good size. It is more than big enough to fill you up as a lunch. The baguette bread on it was nice and fresh. Pork meat was very sweet and tender. The only thing is that it was not spicy enough. When I ordered, he actually asked if I wanted it spicy and I said yes, but it was still not spicy at all. Another review mentions to ask them to add hot peppers - I will do that next time.

Recently I tried this establishment and banh mi saigon. I enjoyed this one better.

This little gem and what I would more refer to as a slight "hole-in-the-wall." The place is small and has very little seating, but boasts a decent size menu. Here eight options stretched on the meat portion of the menu, plus an additional four Vegetarian and Vegan options. The first time I have seen Vegan Bánh mì.

The minced pork sandwich cost $4.25 here, which is a little pricier than other places. The sandwich here took a little time, but the bread came out crispy and warm, which was a nice treat. The bread was crispy, and there was much less of it.  You could tell that the sandwiches here are served with a bit of love (cue Carla from Top Chef). The sandwich here was definitely larger than other places. The baguette here was thinner and therefore less filling. The minced pork filling here was much more plentiful than the previous sandwich and the spicy level was higher. Here, they did give a little too much cilantro and cucumber and they didn't slice my sandwich, something that is necessary.

The question is, would i come here despite it being a little more expensive than other spots? Yes, I would. you get more for your money.

Of all the banh mi joints in Chinatown, this is the most legit one. Their bread is buttery, they give you lots of pate, and when you tell them you want spicy, they really give you extra pepers to make it spicy. Other places when I ordered spicy, they just squirt sriracha in my sandwich. ugh.

The owners are vietnamese too (makes it more legit), prices are good, and they really STUFF the sammich w/all the goodness, daikon, carrots, pate, cilantro, cucumbers. I usually like a lil maggi in my sammich, balances out all the flavors.

I don't care if you're not vegan or don't like tofu. Get the #12 veg curry chicken sandwich. It's better than the actual chicken one, and from the people I've brought there and surveyed, easily the best item on the menu. or IN THE WORLD. I like this sandwich so much that today, I hobbled there on a sprained ankle to get it. I like this sandwich so much that one of my friends brought me one for Christmas. I spent half of the summer considering getting a tattoo of this sandwich, it is so good. It could be the best thing I've ever eaten- every time I have it, it gets better.

To the people who say that their "spicy" isn't spicy enough, you can ask for jalapenos. OR buy a bag of the jalapeno chips and put them on it! And never forget to say "cut in half" or "hold that vile cilantro".

Oh, and their vegetable summer rolls! Just do it. Thank me later.

Banh mi dat biet house special sandwich.

That's what you order. And like it.  Or else.

Vietnamese salami with grilled style pork and Vietnamese mayo...cilantro, cucumber, pickled carrots, swarmed together on a baguette.

    Frickin' awesome.

The spot is really small, with only counter space.  But I didn't come here for the ambience.  I needed a sandwich.  And what I got was one of the most tastiest concoctions ever slapped between two pieces of bread.

Just an FYI note here: I loved it but only gave it 4 stars because I've never had a Vietnamese sandwich before.  This was the spot where I popped my cherry.  And man, it was better than any prom night fumbling in the back seat of a limo.

If you know of a better spot with a better sandwich, hell, put me on to it.

I really like banh mi and Saigon Vietnamese gets some good press. I ordered the #1, the pork banh-mi, and it was pretty average. The pork was chopped and soggy, kind of patty-ish. The vegetables were a little dull. There was no heat or peppers to make things interesting. Do yourself a favor, and walk a minute down the street to Banh Mi Saigon. And thank me later.

I really doubted this place, but a good friend of my kept insisting they have 1 of the best sandwiches ever.  with a lack of enthusiasm,  we trooped and picked up a spicy hero, with sliced cucumbers on the side.  After the first bite, i was AMAZED.  this place is DELICIOUS.
enough said, take your asses there and try it.

Entering Saigon Vietnamese Sandwich Deli felt like walking into a golden filtered, Nick Drake-soundtrack-ed Sesame Street skit from the 80s[1]. Bright yellow walls, everyone smiling. Did I spot a vestigial pair of bell bottoms? The guy behind the counter greeted me with a cheery hello and a smile that said: "come in friend, sample my wares; learn the joys of my culture."

I'm not sure how you could be anything other than happy after eating this Bahn Mi. I had #5 -- the one with the traditional ingredients + pate ($4.25). I'm a weenie and ordered it "not spicy" but I wonder if perhaps I could have handled it "spicy", given the tenor of some of the other reviews. The bread was a nice blend of crispy/chewy; the veggies were fresh/crispy & the pork had an interesting spicy sweetness to it. Delightful.

There was a tv in the corner that I huddled under to devour my sandwich. All the patrons were watching some kind of "OMG WTF Can you believe this happened?!?!?" kind of show. In between bites 3-4, something apparently shocking happened and they all gasped. I looked back at them and, like on a family-friendly 80s television program, they smiled at me, I smiled back, and we all laughed in unison. Cue Pink Moon, roll credits.

Whether it's Saigon Vietnamese Sandwich Deli or Banh Mi So #1, it's just good.

I originally wanted to go to Banh Mi Saigon on Grand St. But that was out of the way. So we happen to stumble onto this place. Small place that's basically a take-out counter.

We order the #3, mince pork banh mi. I'm not going to critique it to death but I thought it was pretty damn good. Nice bread. Good amount of filling. Flavorful pork. As mention in other reviews, cilantro and cucumber didn't bother us.

Dare I say this place rivals Banh Mi Saigon. A worthy banh mi shop.
