hm... note to self ... don't take detours.
Not as close to the Orpheum as I was hoping... but the walk was probably good cause I was stuffed beyond capacity after eating here. We ordered 3 bowls of pho and eggrolls for an appetizer. Strange egg rolls but tasty...Kim T. said it was cause they used a different kind of wrap for it. Seemed kinda spongy but it wasn't bad. Pho tasted alot more wholesome and flavorful than other places (my bf thought it was kinda oily....guess I fail to notice those things, sometimes)
Service was fine ... then again, not a whole lot of people were here other than the 3 of us and a large group of asian men pounding heine's and eating for days. (They'd walk out...then come back in....then go back out...this was all done together, btw)
I don't know if I'd come back considering there's TONS of pho places around Civic Center that I want to try. Will consider if I'm CLOSE by :)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jason C.El Cerrito, CA540223621Nov 2, 2008
One thing I hate about going to cheap Chinese or Vietnamese restaurants are the copious amounts of filler ingredients (Green peppers, onions, and carrots are the usual culprits) used in meat specific dishes.
Let's take diced beef cubes for example. I want beef cubes to be the main attraction. It's okay to garnish a few onions or green leave thingies on the plate, but to give me 85% vegetables and a few undercooked (read: RAW) beef cubes is unacceptable. The BBQ pork hotpot was a little too sweet and overcooked, and the lemon grass chicken was more green bean with 3 tiny pieces of shaved chicken pieces mercifully thrown in.
Also, upon entering, we had to wait almost 5 minutes before getting our menus. Thankfully, they turned on some college football, but please? They also forgot our beer and fried noodles. If your service is this poor, dishes priced towards the upper end of double digit range per plate and to the brim with filler, can you at least bring us booze so we can forget the experience?Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Susy C.San Francisco, CA68817711272Oct 19, 2009Updated review
I had to dock a star. *sigh* The entire point of delivery is because 1) i don't want to go outside or 2) i can't leave my office, right?
My lunch is strictly one hour. Guess how long it took for the food to get here? 50 minutes... I should've walked *sigh*Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Jun 29, 2009Previous reviewI went back last week . i ordered the Chef Special - shaking beef cubes in black pepper, garlic & onions with garlic noodles.
SO DELICIOUS.
First, the portion is huge. I couldn't finish it. I felt like I was robbing them since it was only $8.50. Secondly, the beef was cooked perfectly. It was tender and full of flavor. The garlic noodles were (dare I go there? I think I shall) DA BOMB!!!!! The noodles didn't give me horrible breath afterwards, they weren't dripping in butter or grease, and they were light yet filling.Jun 15, 2009Previous reviewFirst of all, they accept card. THANK GOODNESS. Very rare for a place in the TL to accept card. Secondly, their portions are pretty darn big.
I had the spicy beef noodle soup w/ chili oil and lemongrass.
I thought that the noodles would be the usual pho noodles but NOPE! They used LAI FUN noodles.
Lai Fun is a thicker, round rice noodle.
Anyway, they had a good variety of beef in there: beef brisket, tendon, sliced vietnamese pork (you know, that kind they put in vietnamese sandwiches) and even prok blood squares. MMMMMmmm so delicious!
I ordered mine just mild, didn't want to upset my stomach because I had drank coffee on an empty stomach earlier on.
The noodle soup came out with just the right amount of kick and the lemongrass was not overpowering.
I actually couldn't finish my order because the portions are so big but I am definitely a loyal customer now.
The restaurant is VERY clean, spacious, and it's not a rushed fast paced enviroment like Turtle Tower can be. - Karen Y.Oakland, CA474236365Apr 25, 2009
My friends and I decided to come here one night to grab a bite to eat and it was impressive. It's a fairly small restaurant but the decor is rich-colored and welcoming. Typical Vietnamese food but with an extensive menu of appetizers, rice dishes, vermicelli, and pho.
I was craving vermicelli (aka Bun) so I opted for the one with charbroiled sliced pork and imperial rolls (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/IKrZ1UwM6bSewZqP8Nr0yA?select=iglj2BkyhNKs_QRgz2FKYg)...only $6.95! It came in a gigantic bowl with a side of fish sauce of course and I finished every last bite. =X The imperial rolls were fried to perfection and very tasty. The pork was infused with incredible flavors and just went really well with everything else in the bowl.
You will most likely experience food coma after your meal like I did but it was well worth it! The service was quick and friendly too!
Open 7 days a week until 9pm and offers free delivery.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 61812001137Aug 30, 2009
Try: their grilled pork. Tender and juicy.
Stay away from: their pho. Everything from the beef meatballs and the slices were tough and overcooked.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - jason g.San Francisco, CA1314715104Jul 6, 2009
A very average Vietnamese restaurant in the Tenderloin district. I wish it was better. I came here today for lunch after the 40 year anniversary of Mitchell brother's party on Geary blvd. Mitchell brother's looks different with lights on. hahahah but that's another review that I probably can't yelp. Well............maybe.
The food is just ok. The soup was a little too salty for my taste. I would probably come again to try the rolls and other stuff. This restaurant kinda reminds me of splash a block over. I would definitely do an update for this restaurant. The service was good and the food came out in a timely manner. The price is slightly higher than the more established restaurants around this area, but I can see the Tenderloin turning around.
We had a bowl of the seafood noodle soup, bun bo rui, lemonade, and beef pho. All in all...........pretty average.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Vanessa W.San Francisco, CA467301236Mar 12, 2009
Delicious. The spring rolls here with charboiled pork are delicious; I'll never have spring rolls anywhere else again
.
You can get a big bowl of pho bigger than your head for very cheap. I had mine with tripe [not sure what tripe is - but the Chinese in me only eats - I don't ask questions], rare beef, balls of beef, all that "miscellaneous" stuff.
The chicken curry with rice is great. Again, I'm not a big curry fan - but the chicken was juicy and the curry wasn't too spicy.
The perfect cures for a cold - a hot heapin' bowl of pho with lots of japlepenos, mint leaves & lime juice and a nice hot dish of chicken curry with a side of rice.
There weren't a lot of customers yesterday, but our waitress was very sweet and attentive. A major plus is that I sat in front of a big, flat screen & I got to watch the second quarter of the Mavericks vs. Blazers game last night. I love the Mavericks because Dirk Nowitzski kicks major ass. He's a center for the Mavericks - but he can shoot 3 pointers, he can play point guard, his defense is amazing, he's tall, he's like, one of my favorite NBA stars.
Oops, I'm supposed to be yelping SCR. The only negative - which is why I am knocking off one star - is that the entire time we were there [45 min], the same, instrumental song of N'Sync's or Backstreet Boy's - I'll Never Break Your Heart - kept playing over and over again. Sometimes it would skip, sometimes it would stop [I would be relieved] -- only to continue on again. And again. And again. I wanted to say something, but I was so into conquering my BOP [bowl of pho] that the broken record conquered me.
The grand total for an appetizer of spring rolls, chicken curry with rice, big bowl of pho, a Sprite, complimentary hot tea, and the never-ending teeny-bopper song was...
$23.75.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Kim-van T.San Pablo, CA159439292May 15, 2009
If I could I'd give this place 3.5 stars. I came here the other day with Kat C. and her boyfriend to catch a quick dinner before seeing Wicked at the Orpheum. It's not too far of a walk from the theatre although you walk through some pretty sketchy areas.
The restaurant is a pretty decent size and the owner is very friendly and welcoming. Now you know this place has got to be good when you see the corner table occupied by Vietnamese men, laughing, drinking and eating HELLA food.
The menu itself is pretty extensive but I had already made up my mind to try the pho. I ordered the pho tai (my default) and we also split an order of cha gio (eggrolls). The cha gio are a bit small but for an appetizer I thought the size was perfect! They bring them out on a plate with all the accompaniments - rice vermicelli noodles, lettuce, mint, beansprouts, and fish sauce to dip. The cha gio were chewy on the outside and yummy on the inside - just how I like them! Don't expect the normal eggroll crispy skins that you're used to - I think they use rice paper to wrap theirs giving them that chewy texture.
The bowls of pho are HUGE - for $7-8 I couldn't really have asked for more. When the bowls were first brought out you could really smell the star anise in the broth - which I love. My only quip is that the broth was pretty fatty - not as bad as I've seen it but still too fatty for me. The broth is a little sweet but that was easily remedied with lemon. This place doesn't skimp on the noodles or the beef, I was pleasantly surprised!
I'll be back if I'm in the area and craving pho. =DHelpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Edmund L.Oakland, CA8631Nov 30, 2009
Four stars may be over the top, but hack, I like this joint for their extensive selections offered as compared to most of the other Vietnamese restaurants around. Overall quality is pleasing and price is reasonable (To be honest, my review is merely based on my lunch experience with their house special noodle soup, and I haven't had their rice plate yet). Service is good and the place is quite clean
Bottom line is: this place will probably not make you say "WOW," but you won't be cursing on your way out.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Helen L.San Francisco, CA11839726Dec 9, 2009
NAME CHANGE! Now known as VIETNAMESE HOUSE, not Saigon Cuisine. Also they CLOSE AT 8:30PM, not 10PM.
I ordered the special combination pho (tripe, brisket, tendon, etc etc) at 9:10PM. The guy over the phone told me they closed at 8:30PM, but he was nice enough to still take my order. I got there at 9:25PM, and my food was ready, a total of $8.71.
I don't know if this was because they were already closed or what, but my meat was frozen and my soup was tasteless (like way way way watered down). I ate like maybe 1/8 of the bowl and threw the rest out.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
