I was really disappointed with my first visit here. i had read in the yelp reviews about the goat and was looking forward to trying it. sadly, they did not have goat the night i went and had to settle for beef, fish, or chicken. i selected beef and i was sorry. the beef cubes were impossibly overcooked to the degree that it was blackened and was so tough i could barely cut through it with my knife. i'm not normally one of those "send it back" folks, but i felt i had to in this case and switched to the fish which was much better, but still not what i was looking for.
my wife had an okra dish that was okay but nothing special. on a positive note, i have to give them credit for very healthy portions. i think you do get a lot for what you pay for, it's just that you get "a lot" of mediocre food.
Overall it was an okay place but just okay. don't think i'll go there again with so many other african places in the takoma/takoma park/hyattsville area to try. maybe for take-out one day to give them one more shot, but they best have some goat! : )

Don't be fooled by the name into thinking that this place is Moroccan or something. This place makes good Ghanaian food. Best Ghanaian I've had outside of West Africa. I was there on a Sunday with a handful of friends, many of whom have lived in Ghana, and we were all very impressed.
Different people had different things and nobody was disappointed. I had the fufu and light soup(my favorite). Great soup! Came out hot and fresh and very spicy as it should be. Great portion size too. I had trouble finishing it and I can eat fufu like it's my job. Next time I want to introduce somebody to Ghanaian food, this is where I'm going. Eyede Paaaa. -

Don't pay attention to the first reviewer. This place is close! It was under a five minute drive for us to get there. We wern't rolling 18 deep, so the food for two came out pretty fast. There was no one else eating, but we were there pretty early (5pm). They have a bar, and what looks like live music, or at least a DJ, set up for times other than Tuesday at five.
This was my first foray into Ghanian food, and I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the West African Sampler, and recommend it. Delicious black eyed peas with fried fish. I enjoyed the different flavors, and the fried fish was hot, moist, with lots of meat. Their portions are gigantic. I ate maybe half the meal. They also came with about a pound of fried plantains. I can't imagine anyone who could eat all that. No complaints though. With a doggy bag, I'm basically getting two meals for 13 bucks, not a bad deal.
Service was attentive, but the waitress was a little put off by my questions. Surely I'm not their first customer who doesn't know what fufu is. Unfortunately, I still don't. -

So glad I finally tried this place. Sahara Oasis is less than 1 mile from my house, and I never thought of ever trying it. Here comes Yelp. :-) Was desperately looking for some tasty African food and couldn't get to my favorite spot (Sumah's) right at that moment. So I ventured out on yelp to see what fellow yelpers had to say.
I took a chance and had the okra stew with Croaker, jollof rice, plantains, and the stewed hot pepper sauce. The Okra stew over the jollof rice with the stewed pepper sauce was great; nice and flavorful. The fried croaker was seasoned well and very tasty. It's fried hard, so be mindful if that's not your thing. The plantains are pretty ok. They are not greasy at all (a good thing in my book) and held their shape, but I needed a little ketchup to accompany them.
They do have a great portion size, and I will definitely return and may venture out to try some other things.
How does it compare to Sumah's? Well Sahara definitely has a great flavor, but I think Sumah's Okra stew is a little better. Plus, I've tried more things at Sumah's that are so wonderful, that Sumah's will still be my favorite go-to place. But Sahara will have a leg up and may see me more frequently because of how close they are to me.
Thanks yelpers!! :-) -

Ok so I've been back since the occurrence with only one soup... and the food here is fantastic. Options may be limited, but that just makes it feel all the more like Ghana. TRY IT!

My son and I went here for carry out. The goat was tender and flavorful, the egusi was ok, and the fish was moist and meaty. We truly enjoyed our dinners.

I've only actually dined in here a few times, but I've ordered out more times than I care to remember. I love the fish (tilapia, I think), okra soup (just like the south), the crab soup (available only on certain days), the waakye (black-eyed peas) and that's about it. The peanut soup is okay, and I've had better egusi & spinach, but still very tasty and filling.

This laid-back restaurant offers a variety of African dishes. I did not realize it was Ghanaian at first. I tried the goat, and it was full of bones. Consequently, I left hungry. I'll give it another try, but I can't recommend it at this point.
