I had the fettuccine with truffles and lobster - Very good. Server was excellent. Hostess and Manager were friendly and polite. Very pleasant experience.
Only con is the overpriced wine. I mean really overpriced.

Second stop for restaurant week and what a disappointment. Met a couple friends here for dinner last night and I can easily say this is a place I will not be returning to.
First course I got a salad. It was good, but nothing special. I expected something a bit better. Friend got the gnocchi, which I will say was really good and probably the highlight of the entire dinner.
For the entree two of us got the pasta with basil pesto. The pasta wasn't just al dente, it almost wasn't cooked at all. Like there were strands that wouldn't even curl around my fork. On top of that the bottom of the bowl was just swimming with butter. Yuck. The person who got the steak said it was ok, but for an $8 up-charge it should have been more than ok.
Dessert time, I get the crepe. Part of it is burnt, and the part that isn't is just overloaded with sugar. One friend got the canollis, they were soggy. Other friend got the chocolate cake and seemed unimpressed.
I don't see how the restaurant week price was even a deal for this as I could easily get better food elsewhere for less. On top of that it was so loud in there we couldn't even carry on a conversation. Yeah, there are too many resturants in this area for me to consider going to Sage again.

My opinion on this restaurant is naturally skewed for a couple different reasons, so let me point them out first.
1. My best friend's boyfriend is a bartender here, so we get lots of free things.
2. I don't fit in here regardless of said free things and it gives me the he-be-ge-bees.
This place is super expensive, even with free bottles of wine being lobbed in my direction, and I've only ever sat at the bar. I don't think I'm allowed to mention anything degrading about my friend's boyfriend, and his service with us hardly counts as regular service, so I'm going to focus on the food.
Last time I was there we did the restaurant week menu, starting with a Thai express martini and some other martini that had grapefruit juice in it. Both of these cocktails were ridiculously good and we drank them in like five seconds. Then we had a bottle of wine, that really was overpriced, but we didn't pay for it. They have a nice wine list though I usually prefer places that take more risks.
For the first course, we had a pizzetta with sausage and onion, that was tasty but didn't look so good. We also shared the calamari, which was not the best I've ever had, but still pretty tasty. I'll give it a 7 on my calamari rating scale. Our entrees were the duck and the crabcakes. Both pretty good, but maybe I was expecting more? It seems when you walk in like everythings going to be so phenomenal, but I probably could have made the risotto and some other things myself. They're getting four stars because I know someone who works there, but this place is definitely too upscale for the likes of me.
I agree with Vivian that the service and atmosphere leaves much to be desired. We went for their Wednesday night gelato bar, which sounded tempting with various toppings, etc. Our group of 25 was excited about the event!
The server was bossy and flip, and totally did not appreciate our business. He kept asking if we're there for gelato or other things? Like, what other options? Bring a menu over, perhaps?
They stood at the bar and made our party walk up to pick out our two teaspoon scoops and tiny drippings of toppings. And then they had the nerve to charge a 20% gratuity to the bill! We did all of the work, getting up and walking across the room!!
I love the South End and the idea of a gelato bar, but I would say skip this and skip Sage. Thanks :)

Question: What do you get when a restaurant serves "fennel crema" then doesn't provide its hapless diner with a spoon?
Answer: The waiters laughing their asses off in the kitchen.
Aren't we a laugh riot, Sage. Maybe if you had less of an attitude and better attention to detail your restaurant wouldn't have been virtually empty on Thursday night at 7:30 pm. This dining experience was a major major disappointment. I'd heard good things in the past about Sage... but boy. There must have been some major shift in management or culinary leadership because this experience was about as inspiring as a Mel Gibson movie. But beyond just the food, the service and ambiance were downright bizarre.
One of my dining companions is a vegetarian and inquired as to whether they could make the gnocchi with a plain tomato-based sauce. The waiter indicated that they couldn't. Fine, right? The chef has his rules and we as diners must respect said rules. Whatever. But then, the waiter brought bread with a delectable tomato-based sauce. We were perplexed and can't quite figure out why that sauce could not have been used on the gnocchi. My vegetarian companion ended up ordering the risotto and was ultimately able to get said sauce on the side. Even more strange was our waiter's emphatic insistence on addressing my dining companion as "Vegetarian" for the totality of the evening. She refrained from addressing him as "Asshole" but only because she's a lady in addition to a vegetarian.
I ate the rice smoked duck and it was fine... but at that price point I'd just as soon pass on something "fine" and go for a facial. I note as well that the restaurant does have a peculiar habit of omitting some of the ingredients in their dishes from the menu. For example, as an appetizer, I had the prosciutto plate and discovered that (SURPRISE!) it had canteloupe on it. I loathe canteloupe- it's the dominant melon and spreads its flavor to all other foods indiscriminantly- so I wouldn't have ordered the dish if I had known that it had canteloupe. The joke's on me again, Sage. You comedian, you.
Aside from the flawed service and less-than-stellar food, I found it hilarious that the restaurant was playing Bob Marley over the speaker system. It was as if the random and incongruous food pairings were reflected in the music. The parallel was fascinating. And though I love Bob Marley...DUDE... It's an Italian restaurant at a high-falutin price point. "Get up, Stand up" does nothing for my enjoyment of my fine Mediterranean fare. Another knee-slapper, Sage! You slay me with your funny funny jokes!
Want some "sage" advice? Just go to the North End and Fuhgeddaboutit.

What a collossal disappointment this place was. We ended up going here as a gift (it was our first anniversary) and I would definitely not recommend it. Here's why. If I wanted second-rate piece of farm raised salmon devoid of any flavor whatsoever, I could get that at Applebees and save $15 in the process. I ordered grilled asparagus as a side and expected that it would arrive grilled. Silly me. It was sauteed in butter and I mean it was literally drowning in butter. AND, when I asked the wait-person why, she responded "oh that's how we prepare it here." Someone needs to obviously inform these folks on the definition of "grilled." Cooking lessons might have been in order as well. While the service was polite it wasn't anything over and above or special in any way Overall I'd say this was extremely average experience at a premium price. I see no compelling reason to give Sage any further business based on this one experience--and first impressions are lasting ones. Hamburger helper indeed...this place needs someone to run a proper restaurant.
Just went here with my husband and a friend for Restaurant Week in the South End. We loved every single thing except the main course! We made sure that each person had a different dish for every course, so we tried quite a few things. Appetizers great, sides great, wine great, dessert great! I had Chicken Milanese, which was very ordinary breaded chicken with arugula on top, husband had fettucini bolognese which he said tasted like Hamburger Helper (and that was OK with him), and my friend had some fatty pork. Really enjoyed the meal overall, but the main courses didn't WOW us.
Amazing Italian food! We started with the pasta sampler (I never thought fettucini could taste so good), I had the duck and the SO had the tuna...the best we've had anywhere in Boston. The service was very good, although the host was a bit odd.
I thought this restaurant was pretty disappointing, especially for the price.
Pros:
1. The decor is pretty and its generally a nice atmosphere, although it was a little weird that when the restaurant was mostly empty, they seated the only 3 parties who were there right next to each other.
2. Service was fine - not exceptional, but certainly nothing to complain about.
3. My bf really loved his steak, but then again he loves beef in pretty much any form.
That's about it. Now the not so good stuff.
1. The rest of the food was mediocre at best. We shared the buffalo mozzarella and mushroom tart, which wasn't bad but wasn't spectacular. The duck entree I had was really disappointing - I normally love duck, but I could barely even eat this. I had a side of risotto that was way too watery. Like I said, my bf really liked his steak, but he'll eat and enjoy pretty much anything that's put in front of him.
2. VERY small portions - prepare to eat another meal afterwards.
3. The descriptions on the menu left out ingredients - for example, it failed to mention the orange slices on the duck or the onion in the tart - it wasn't a big deal for us, but might be for someone who has allergies.
4. The menu on-line differed significantly from the one in the restaurant. This might not be a big deal to other people, but for me, half the enjoyment of the restaurant experience is perusing the menu in advance and figuring out what I'm going to eat, and then when I show up to the restaurant and its not there, its something of a letdown.
5. The dessert menu was sorely lacking in chocolate desserts. Again, something specific to me, but it was a bummer.
Overall I'd have to say this place is definitely not worth a three figure dinner for two. Go to the North End instead and have a much better meal for half the cost.

After hearing RAVE reviews of the old North End location, and never having been able to capture a Sat. night resevration, I put Sage on the back burner while they moved to the South End.
I was thrilled to get in on a Sat. night at the new location.
Needless to say, I was just not impressed.
The food was ok, nothing special - the service was the same. If you are going to spend this kind of money on a nice Italian meal try Via Matta, Mama Maria's, etc.
I don't get the great reviews on this place... We went and had typical, we think we're great and if you don't you can leave type problems...
Small portions, something in the water, bad art, attitude, and just general ickyness... Definitely won't go back & agree with the other poster, go to Stella, get wonderful service, in a great atmosphere...
This restaurant is a treasure. None of the Hanover St nonsense (a plate of pasta drowning in sauce is not good food and certainly not worth the price). The food is amazing, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. We were actually turned away because it was already 10pm when we arrived (without a reservation) but someone else came running into the street and told us to come in and they would serve us. That, my friends, is awesome. And then a member of our group spilled a glass of wine all over the table and we felt like total jerk-offs but it was all good!
I'm not usually a big fan of cozy 'intimate' restaurants (to me that usually means crowded and loud) but they do it right at Sage. Be prepared to spend $20-30 per entree. It's worth it.

Superb food. This was easily the best food I had on my recent trip to Boston.
The meal got off to a very promising start when the bread arrived - fresh and warm foccacia bread with a scrumptious and light tomato dipping sauce. Really delicious.
Our server, though attentive, was not warm. She got the job done but was not really friendly. We asked for a wine recommendation and went with a carafe of the pinot noir. Unfortunately, the wine was pretty bad. And when she served it, she did not have one of us sample it first; instead, she immediately filled our glasses. The bad wine recommendation and somewhat chilly service are two reasons why I did not give Sage five stars.
Drew W. and I then had the Kobe beef carpaccio. This dish was absolutely wonderful. The beef was flavorful but light, and perfectly accented with mushrooms, arugula and olive oil.
We next had the buffalo mozzarella crostata and the roasted shrimp and fava bean appetizers. The buffalo mozzarella was on top of toasted bread and also came with sauteed eggplant. Drew wasn't crazy about the combination of the mozzarella and eggplant simply beause the cheese was cold and the eggplant warm. I didn't mind this contrast and found the flavors excellent. The roasted shrimp was perfectly cooked and seasoned and was well balanced by the fava beans and light sauce.
For entrees, I ordered the duck and Drew got the rabbit milanese. Sadly, my duck was a little overcooked and was not as good as the other parts of the meal. This is the other reason why I rate Sage as a four rather than a five. The duck was tough and rather flavorless. It needed a lot of sauce. Because the spinach absorbed a lot of the sauce in the dish, the duck tasted pretty good when eaten with the spinach. The dish also came with a piece of cold corn custard. The custard had nice flavor but I was not crazy about the combination of the duck with the almost dessert-like cold custard. Overall, the duck was disappointing.
In contrast, Drew's rabbit milanese was stupendous. The rabbit was incredibly tender and flavorful, with a light breading surrounding the meat, and plated with delicious saffron risotto and green beans wrapped in pancetta. The meat and risotto went together wonderfully and were perfectly seasoned and cooked. A truly spectacular dish.
As a whole, the meal was excellent. If we had gotten a better wine recommendation, a slightly friendlier server, and the duck had been better, I would definitely have given Sage a solid five stars.

Went here with a friend who invited me and my boyfriend. This was fantastic food. We started off with the pasta sampler and the Duck Rillette. Dinner was Duck, Sole and the Striped Bass. Everything was excellent. The fruit tiramisu for dessert topped it off nicely. The place is worth it waiting to get a reservation!
Aww, my first review. I went to Sage 2-16-2008 at 20:30 for dinner~ My first time at this restaurant.. My date had eaten at Umbra before it closed and had very good memories of the food there so it would be a challenge to live up to..
Recap of what we ordered... I usually take photos to remind myself but the room was pretty dim to dark so I didn't want to give the other customers a scare with my flash.. so I opted not to take photos.. so this is from memory and menu online... Apps: Seared Sea Scallops, Ce lery Duo, Cranberry Jam 13 - Seared well but really nothing special about them.. Crispy Cod Cake, Prune Puree, Marscapone 11. - Same thing.. good when eating this but the dish is not too memorable.. Dinner: Rice Smoked Duck Breast, Sauted Spinach, Squash Puree 25. - I enjoyed the duck.. It was cooked well and it went well with the squash puree. I didn't care for the sauteed spinach.. kinda mushy and left some on my plate Roasted Venison Loin, Faro Salad, Chestnut Crema, Prunes 29 - My first time eating Venison. I personally liked it.. didn't have any gamey taste that I expected and was cooked medium rare, very nice~
Overall impression of the place.. It was ok... Most of the meal wasn't memorable.. Service was good, she was attentive and the drink menu is a bit eclectic.. Most of the time, the lighting was too dim to dark that it would be a good place to go if you decided not to do your face.. Host/hostess very nice and appreciated the coat check..
Will I be back? Probably negative...... Date still misses Umbra.
The apps were sensational. I opted for the trying the '3 entrees' so the chef prepared three nicely proportioned dishes - I highly recommed this option!
I choose the duck as my entree and was blow away by the texture and sauce. Like one of the other posters mentioned I've never had that feeling of duck 'melting in your mouth.' Sensational.
Wine selection is great - and the waiter was friendly and knowlegable.
DOWNSIDE: I took my g/f day after valentines and while it was freezing outside it was uncomfortably cold inside also. I asked if something could be done but no go. I wish they just turned up the heat a little.
Highly recommended for the food. Ambience is mediocre.

Reading these reviews makes me think I may have ordered wrong...I dined here last night and enjoyed it throroughly but I don't know if it's the BEST I've had n the North End.
I chose the seared ahi tuna and found it tasty but a little salty. The squash puree it was served with was devine though! My friend ordered the paperdell which was one of the best pastas I've ever had!
The service was excellent-we were one of 4 tables-but the gentleman working was a little pushy getting us out (it was nearly 11 on a tuesday though).
Their wine selection is small but filled with good choices and the tomato compote served with the bread is a total treat!

Excellent food! Not what you'd expect in the North End...so much better! Waiters were all very nice and even told us about a parking lot to leave the car, since street parking is impossible. We made reservations, but it was a slow night, there was only 1 family in the place, so that was a little awkward. The 3 dinner appetizer combo was excellent, as was the seared tuna and lamb, veal plate. The chocolate mousse wasnt thick like I thought it would be, it actually seemed deflated, which is disappointing, because it could have been so good.

My favorite North End destination and definitely one of the best impress-your-date intimate Italian restaurants in Boston. The cuisine is an artful balance between innovative and classic Italian, with particularly noteworthy risottos and seafood dishes (although I have yet to find a mediocre dish). Their prices are also quite reasonable compared to the other top restaurants in the North End (entrees run $20-$30). While some might view the small size of the restaurant as a fault (they have approximately 10 tables), the result is an incredibly intimate dining experience with absolutely impeccable service. But given the size of the restaurant, I strongly recommend having a reservation.
One word of caution - their menu is quite small (ten entree options) and is heavily geared toward Italian meat and seafood dishes. If you are looking for vegetarian dishes (or even a lot of pasta options), you should probably look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for an intimate dinner of seared tuna or rabbit milanese (delicious!), this is the place for you.

OK, if there were a 6th star, I would lay it down for Sage. This is my favorite restaurant in the Boston area. I am not kidding.
Each individual course is more amazing than the last...all took me places I have never been. It's a cliche to say that food "melts in your mouth" but the only time that has ever occurred in my dining experience was at Sage.
Fantastic wines. Very high-end wait-staff.
Yep, it is tiny. Do not even THINK of going here without a reservation. Do some planning online to figure out where you will park. There are a lot of pay-lots in the North End.

My husband and I went here for restaurant week and were extremely disappointed. All the food was extremely salty and had no flavor. The only part of our meals that were good were the appetizers and after that it was all down hill. My main course was a plain piece of breaded chicken (Chicken Breast Milanese, Arugula, Parmesan & Truffle Vinaigrette) that I could have made better at home, by just putting some seasoning on it, and the arugula Parmesan was covered with salt. My husband had Hand Made Fettuccine, Classic Bolognese accompanied by salt. And for dessert he had Ricotta Zeppole which had no flavor and as he was taking his last bit the plate was pulled out from under him and I had chocolate bread pudding. Which originally they brought me the wrong thing and they did the same thing pulling the plate out from under me to replace it with the right dessert 20 minutes later. It was a bad experience and we would not go back. Bad service bad food!

Had to try this place since everyone was raving about it, including chefs, and a couple of Italians who just moved to Boston recently (claimed it was the best meal since Italy). Anyways...the gnocci was awesome! Never was a fan gnocci, and this converted me. The braised short rib was good, a bit too salty tho. Chicken was served with a potato mousse...yum!

This place is tucked away from the Northend's main drag, making it a cozier, more intimate experience. Sage strays from traditional italian fare towards a more modern sensibility. On the night that I was there, the slow roasted octopus was of particular note: tender and quite tasty, though the menu changes with the chef's whims. Sage would be an ideal place to impress someone with your knowledge of the Northend, and with the complexity of your taste.

Italian food, in my view, is one of those rare cuisines that can be done extremely well at both the high end, and at the low end. I call it the Babbo - Olive Garden spectrum. The problem is often found in the middle - sure you can increase the quality of the ingredients, and bump up the dcor and service... but can you really be innovative and surprise your guests - give them something they haven't tasted before? At some point, you really have to, to avoid the "modern-art gripe." ("I could have done that myself!") That, in my view, is where many of these often ill-fated mid-to-high-range Italian eateries falter, and after my one dining experience at Sage (South End location), I'm sorry to say I'll have to place them in that same boat. Tasty food, but small portions, and less energy than Stella (which can, admittedly, sometimes be a good thing)... I'd consider going back, but not in a hurry.

Tony Susi is an amazing chef... and Sage is truly a gem. However, I think the cuisine leans more toward New American. His lobster bisque, which I had years ago, remains one of the most memorable culinary experiences I have ever had.

Small treasure of the North end. Executive Chef Anthony Susi uses only the best of ingredients and is incredibly creative. he was one of the first in Boston to offer rosmary gelato! Great experience, just remeber to reserve your table in advance.
The sage menu is quite expensive, great ambiance. low lights, mix crowd from late 20s - 60s. There is a invisible division between the bar and the seating area, which hard to achieve for regular restaurants. The bar is lively, where as the seating area is filed with quiet chatters. Girls and I were here on a rainy Monday night around 9pm and it's almost a full house (I see stairs, but I wasn't sure if there was a lower level). We went for a couple of drinks and a late snack. The staff was to be more than accommodating. We wanted to sit at the bar, there one table w/ 2 seats (3 of us), so they move everything around to fit us in. We didnt want to spend a fortune, so we ordered from the bar menu and appz. Food came quick, tho a little salty on the sandwiches. Drinks are quite strong. We stayed past the hour, and they just let us chat up the world. Overall, great, friendly staff. I'll give the food a second try soon (and order from the real menu). To be treated like real people at a classy restaurant, priceless.
Made the mistake of taking my mother and sister here for (1 day before) mother's day (they are not open Sundays).
Food was bland, boring and overpriced. The gnocchi in particular tasted and had the texture of raw silken tofu, and was paired horribly with large undercooked fava beans, which also were nearly tasteless and had a sand-like texture that just didn't work with the silken tofu (oops, I mean gnocchi).
My mother was brought the wrong dish (the one the creepy waiter was playing up instead of the one she had clearly ordered), and no offer was made for a discount or free dessert or any of the other things classy restaurants usually offer to ameliorate such mistakes. Her fish was uninteresting, similar to the results of buying a fillet from a local supermarket and cooking it with no other ingredients.
My sister's dish was the best at the table, but continued the trend of having tastes and textures that detracted from each other.
Menus failed to mention major ingredients in dishes which members of my party intensely dislike, and in several cases said dishes included things which they did not.
I found the desserts uniformally unpalatable. They were all flavored with extremely strong liquors, which overpowered the other ingredients. Frankly at times it felt like eating food spiked with orange or chocolate flavored Listerine. The expresso was also unremarkable.
Overall one of the worst experiences among the scores of higher class restaurants I've experienced. I highly recommend looking elsewhere for your dinner plans.
i was really impressed with this place. the decor was great, the food was fantastic, and the portions were just right - i didn't STUFF myself, but i left really full. i also liked that they had some hardcore carnivore entrees (rabbit, etc) but they also had some veg options and when i emailed them to ask in advance of my meal, they said they would provide vegan options as well if needed (what italian restaurant DOES that?). there are two menus - a regular menu and a tasting menu, although the tasting menu needs to be ordered by the whole table. i felt like the offerings weren't strictly italian, because they had a few raw fish appetizers, but everything was kind of (i hate to use this phrase, but it's true) "italian-inspired". they also had a pasta tasting because they always have three pasta entrees, which isn't on the menu but our server told us about. i thought my food was PHENOMENAL. i had a roasted beet salad as my appetizer and the gnocchi entree, which was in a pretty simple sauce but you could tell the gnocchi was handmade and it was so fluffy and delicious. also, the BREAD BASKET was SO good!! it was kind of like panini bread with this tomato dipping sauce..yum.
the low points:
-the desserts. our table ordered three different desserts and none of them were that great. however they do have cheese options for dessert which i might do next time instead.
-the service. okay, the service was pretty good. but it was kind of too over the top. our server was really hovering, and did stuff like offering his recommendations to us (even though we didn't ask for it)..it kind of felt borderline condescending, which was disappointing. but we were there when it wasn't that busy, so maybe that was to account for the over-attention. i suppose paying $30 per entree one would expect that kind of service though so it was a treat, but it made me feel a little uncomfortable because in my opinion good servers should let you enjoy your meal in peace with your family, but should be attentive enough that when you need them they're around..it's a fine balance that i'm not so sure this place has struck, but i will definitely be back (during restaurant week when i can actually afford it :) to check.

The host at this restaurant was obnoxious, rude and unprofessional. Because of him, I will never dine at this restaurant again. Despite showing up ontime for our reservation and more than half of the restaurant empty, the host mumbled something to our party of four which we deciphered to be "I can't have anyone blocking my door, wait outside." After waiting outside for 15 minutes in the 8 degree cold, one from our party went in to ask what was going on. She was totally ignored by the host and was unable to get any information. After a few more minutes, I went inside and saw that two 4-tops were available and ready for guests. I waited at the door for a few minutes without even an acknowledgement from the host as he flirted with girls that were seated in the back, refilled water at various tables and chatted with the kitchen staff. When he finally approached me, I asked him why we hadn't been seated at either of the two tables. He muttered something about having to wait for some menus to free up before he could seat us. It should be obvious to anyone that it is more important to seat a diner with a reservation, even without being able to provide a menu immediately, rather than instructing them to wait outside in the freezing cold. In all, we waited close to 30 minutes before we were seated. Although the waiter, the food and the atmosphere in the restaurant were truly excellent, the evening was ruined by this incompetent host.
