3 reviews for Saga Motor Hotel
Great hotel!
Good location and excellent price.
We used to live up the street from this hotel. We had to stay here for a week when our apartment building was having some work done on it.
I love the 1960s feel to this place and the staff was very nice.
One of my favorite things about this hotel is the big sign.
I've uploaded photos of that cool sign.

This place is old school - I guess the name kinda gives it away. You might say it's a hidden find for the area, and it has a lot going for it.
First off, it's an old haunt of geeky scientists and engineers (think Carl Sagan types) visiting Caltech (just a couple of blocks away) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (just up the Arroyo). I found out about Saga Motor Hotel when I worked at JPL. I ended up staying here on business trips when I worked remotely for JPL. I've also stayed here with various family members, and we've all really enjoyed it.
The Saga is conveniently located, though the neighborhood is not stellar. But one generally drives everywhere in Los Angeles anyways - the Saga just allows for shorter drives in the area. And besides, the area's dodgy charm sure beats the blah gentrification of Old Town Pasadena fer sure.
Also, you're in LA, so it's a major bonus that The Saga has a great pool. The super tall palm trees are dreamy, and the view of the San Gabriel Mountains (when smog isn't obscuring them) is terrific.
And, there's more: The Saga has a very nice breakfast. The Saga has interesting clientele. The Saga has a great mosaic near the lobby.
The only main drawback to the place is that I have had variable experiences with noise. Once, there was a band staying the night (it IS on the Rose Parade route) and, um, that was not so good. So I would go for a top level room or for a room by the pool. Another time we stayed in a room that was just by the exit, and Colorado Blvd. noise was pretty loud. So I would just try and strategize room selection if you can.
Enjoy!

My wife and I were planning on spending the week-end in a more expensive place, like the Sheraton.
But when we arrived in Pasadena, the SMH had vacancies and we were tired so we decided to give it a try.
All the rooms are unique, the pool is nice and heated and the place definitely has the feel of a B&B.
I will stay there again next time I go to Pasadena for more than a day.
