Nice twist on traditional ice creams. Cool flavors. my favorites are the white rose and pistachio. The white rose smells and taste like roses. It's not as sweet as regular ice cream.
only place where I am willing to eat a little ice cream :) -

Saffron? Rose? Ice cream?
No. That couldn't possibly wor...
[tastes saffron & pistachio ice cream]
..or could it? Could it actually be genius?
[tastes white rose ice cream]
Oh! Oh! Could it be ah-mazing? Could it be sweet cream with a floral aroma and a dense texture? Could it be simultaneously familiar and foreign in flavor?
[tastes orange blossom ice cream]
OH!
And I'm spent. -

My best friend and I absolutely love this place.
Every time she comes to visit me in Westwood we go to Saffron & Rose Ice Cream. I discovered it because I literally lived around the corner from it last year.
It's a homey place and they serve Persian ice cream. They use rose water and therefore the texture is different from typical ice cream. It's smoother and creamier. It's kind of gooey too? If that makes any sense.
I haven't tried ALL of the flavors, but I have my favorites.
I love their almond ice cream. They don't always have it, which is a bummer, but I get it every time I see it.
Their Saffron & pistachio is extremely good too. I get this flavor every single time I go.
I also like white rose and jasmine, which have more a more floral taste. But they're sweet and delicious.
Guava and apple were good. They're fruity but because of the rose water they're still fragrant.
From my experience there, the woman typically serves more than the man that works there. They also allow you to sample flavors before making your final choice.
All in all, it's one of my favorite places to go near UCLA! -

Merp. Thick and sweet ice cream. I like! I shared the avocado and kiwi flavor along with soy saffron pistachio? flavor. The flavors mixed together was a wee bit overwhelming. I shared with my friend and he split it between us. When he did, I was surprised to how thick and marshmellowy the ice cream was! I was like...wha? that's ridiculously thick! So good! I couldn't finish mine because it was a bit heavy but all in all, i'll go back and try the other flavors. YUM! I've had gelato, but never Peruvian ice cream. I'm def. a fan! Wonder where can I get peruvian ice cream in the bay area...hm.....=] hah.

The shop itself isn't nicely decorated. Looks plain, almost a hole in the wall. However, the flavors are unique and deeeelish. I've liked every single flavor I've tried here. Cucumber, rose, saffron, and a few other fruity flavors.
They make all their ice cream in-house, so everything tastes fresh and clean. -

Thank you Neesha S. for introducing me to this amazing Persian ice cream joint. Came here on a weeknight and I was in for a treat. We got the ginger, saffron and rose flavors and they were all amazing. My favorite was ginger, with saffron right behind. The flavors were so subtle and yet so engulfing...loved every minute of it.
The best part was that I almost had a soup Nazi moment (from Seinfeld)! The guy behind the counter was getting our orders when he overheard my friend and I discuss how we should try making ice cream at home and I mentioned that David Lebovitz has a great pistachio gelato recipe on his website.....omg, I have never seen someone turn around so fast! He spent the next 5 minutes telling us how gelato is not as good as Persian ice cream and how they can never have a saffron flavored gelato as saffron is so expensive....I was so scared he would then say "No ice cream for you!" But he just grumpily looked away and then handed us our cups....it made for a fun night!
Overall, the ice cream is really good...takes me back to my time in India as most of the local mom and pop stores there have ice cream like this...fresh and really tasty! If you are in Westwood, definitely head here and maybe if you are lucky you might get to experience a near ice cream Nazi moment!Listed in: Ice cream time!

If you're a Yelper who likes your ice cream thick and creamy, Saffron & Rose is for you! It's kind of amazing how dense it really is... As I literally swirl and twirl the ice cream around my spoon, I imagine it tastes like the ice cream churned out of the machines on Iron Chef America. Bobby Flay's sous chef digs the homemade creations out with his spatula while everyone watches in anticipation. Of course, Alton Brown is saying something witty in the background.
Ask for samples and sit down in the humble Mom & Pop shop to satisfy your sweet tooth. There's an adorably cozy "patio" area outside too if you're getting dessert with a date. My recommendation: Saffron Pistachio. -

tried the poppyseed slush. yum! very light floral taste. very interesting experience. the spices are pretty foreign to my taste though, so on a day to day basis, i'd probably stick to my favorite gelato shops.

First time trying saffron ice cream - both with and without pistachios!
Luckily... I tried my friend's first. Can't say I'm fond of the saffron flavor.. but never fear - plenty of other flavors to be had, ranging from chocolate to milk to coconut to date to strawberry to green tea, which is what I had. Adore anything green tea!
What I really liked about this place was the wafer concept - loved making my own little ice cream sandwich. I must say, it's so much more fun to eat ice cream that way!
One nice thing? They have to-go containers and large packets of the wafters for sale. The to-go containers range from small ($4) to extra large ($16.50). -

This isn't some fancy shmancy, hosh posh dessert place. In fact, it's really down-to-earth, humble, and incredibly unique.
THIS PLACE IS A MUST MUST MUST TRY. Why? Because how often do you get to eat persian ice cream?
My favorite flavors: White Rose and Pistachio. YUM.
Their ice creams are light, refreshing, and completely different than the usual flavors (white rose, saffron, cucumber?!) - not to mention, they actually taste like what their flavor is. Unlike the typical ice cream places that sell "pistachio" and it's really some sugary ice cream that tastes NOTHING like pistachio. Don't be intimidated by the "crazy" flavors - they're insanely delicious. Trust the other hundreds of reviews! 4+ star rated!
I LOVE this place - cheap, good, and close by. PLUS, they always give samples! So go ahead and try whatever flavor you want. You're bound to find one that suits you! -

So many different and unusual flavors, very very tasty.
I loved the saffron rose and pistachio ice cream, that was a riot of flavor in your mouth.
The date one was pretty good too. -

First off, I don't like ice cream. It's too creamy and I don't like the way it makes me feel after. BUT this place is an exception to that rule. My go-tos:
Saffron, Jasmine, White Rose, Pistachio, Cucumber
All light, packed with flavor, and complimentary with each other. I love the ice cream and the service here -

saffron and rose..you have my dessert heart! I could have sworn they had a saffron and rose in my hometown a long time ago when i was really young, but maybe it was just a different persian ice cream joint. i had the saffron and pistachio and creamy lavender. amazing! the flavors are so unique and special...floral-y enough to be tasty but not like a perfume taste definitely want to come back and get the others. my friend got the mango and it reminded me of a creamier mango lassi 8) the green tea didn't taste too green tea-y enough for my liking though.

MOST AMAZING ICE CREAM I HAVE EVER HAD!!!!
I found it randomly driving past it one night after having a big meal. I fell in love with the cappuccino flavor instantly. The White Rose is a popular favorite, and boy did it have tiny bits of frozen cream with rose water flavor - definitely makes a trip to LA worthwhile! The man that works there is really nice and put up with my curiosity of trying a few of the flavors until my guy and I found our matches.
He ended up with the hazelnut and date ice cream - both were really delicious!
It's got a cool story: The man that works there is the original owner's son. He had opened the ice cream shop in the late 1800's and his son is continuing the family business. I see the ice cream in the small Persian markets in Orange County - which I used to purchase until I found the real source of this heavenly creation.
I can't wait until I can go again! -

YUM!
I just came in tonight after a failed shopping trip at Ross. I thought to myself, hey, isn't that Persian ice cream place around here? And SCORE!!!! It was. Thank God. When Ross lets me down, I need a pick me up.
I've always loved Persian ice cream, so I have been meaning to try this place. From the outside, and even when you walk in, it's not the most chic place, but OMG, it gets better.
The woman helping me said they didn't have the flavor I wanted, but offered me a sample of a different flavor so that I could try something new. I almost never ask for samples, as I hate being a bother (I remember working at an ice cream place as a teen and being SO annoyed by people that felt compelled to try 2,394,723 samples). But, without me even asking, the woman continued to scoop up little samples so I could try lots of different flavors. I really appreciated that kind of service. Of the samples that I didn't end up purchasing, I really liked the watermelon - so light and fresh!
I ended up with two flavors. The white rose was so good...like a rosewater but super creamy - yet not overwhelming. I feel so decadent when I eat things made out of flowers!
I also had the date - basically a subtly flavored date ice cream with big chunks of date throughout. OMG. SO FRIGGIN GOOD.
Obviously, if you come here craving a big chocolate sundae, you will be disappointed. But trust me - good ice cream can come in all flavors, and Saffron & Rose nails it.Listed in: ME WANT DESSERT

I've been coming to this place for years...when it was down the street within a market...
My favorite: The Saffron and Rose Ice cream. The bits of pistachio in the ice cream are pretty delicious...and the milk "ice cubes" in the ice cream. Yum Yum Yum.
I typically get mine mixed with a bit of faloodah, which is a rice noodle rosewater ice cream...which is really all about the texture.
It's definitely one of the strangest desserts I've ever had... but it's also pretty yummy.
The only problem with this place as someone mentioned is the language barrier. If I'm with someone who speaks the language, it's much better. If not, um... yeah. I can smile and nod. :) -

Persian ice cream or bastani as we Iranians call it has distinct flavors that might even be called unusual by the average westerner.
I love rose water, the sweet smell and taste of holoo e khadijah is so refreshing.
This little business has the best ice cream. -
Review from Sherry V.
Really good rosewater and saffron & pistachio ice cream. It's got a light, stretchy consistency and overall really unique flavors. I just stick to the first two anytime I come here. Not a pretentious place at all- kind of like a mom&pop shop in good ol' Westwood. Find your new ice cream flavor here.

This place is amazing and has the most unique ice cream flavors to boot. I had the Saffron and Rose and Cucumber ice cream, which were both very refreshing. I also ordered them with faloodah, which is a sweetened iced vermicelli noodle mix that is very popular in South Asia.
Persian ice cream is not heavy on the dairy, so expect a much lighter on the palate ice cream experience. This place is definitely worth a visit if you have a penchant for new and exotic flavors. I cannot wait to go back. -

This was my first time trying Persian ice cream and it was pretty awesome. I got the white shaved ice stuff with the crispy noodle things in it, and some of the saffron and pistachio ice cream on top. Then I poured the cherry syrup stuff on top and it all came together fantastically. I apologize that I have no idea what any of the items are called in their official way, but they were definitely very tasty. Gotta try it out if you've never had it.
Summary: Cool frozen treat. Parking is rough. Good times! -

Great flavor variety. Cucumber was surprisingly my favorite - refreshing, sweet, with a lot of rose water flavor. Dark chocolate was amazing and had bits of chocolate, brownie, and nuts in it (nuts not advertised though, so would be an issue for those with an allergy.) Saffron & pistachio was good too.
Only problem was a language barrier with one employee, but they had multiple people there, so I was able to communicate with one of them. He was the owner from what I could tell. Super nice. Told us about the icecream - how they make it and most flavors are organic. Gave us samples of the new pomegranate flavor. -

LOVE LOVE LOVE. Stopped in this place on my way to dinner (yes, dessert came before dinner) because I was too afraid it'd be closed by the time we were done! Such a good decision. It was already close to closing time and the shop was empty of customers aside from us, but the gentleman behind the counter was super friendly and patient nonetheless. To add to that, he allowed us to sample almost half of the flavors there since I wasn't familiar with many of them.
I learned that Persian ice cream is rose water based and it gives it a really light taste compared to regular dairy ice creams that most people are used to. We ended up settling on a scoop of almond and a scoop of mango. It ended up being the perfect appetizer. -
Review from Shane D.
In SoCal, we have so many unique eating experiences available, that it's easy for us to overuse hyperbole when describing a place on Yelp. But this little ice cream shop is truly unique.
I believe the owners are persian, and they have gone completely off the radar from anything I've seen before at a ice cream shop.
The flavors are crazy, but everyone I've tried has been solid...
Saffron & Rose
Lavender
Cucumber
Hazelnut Rose
Jasmine
Saffron Pistachio
Pomegranate
Rosewater
Poppy Seed
These are just a small sampling. The flavors rotate everyday, so you're never quite sure what you're going to get, but a few signature flavors (like Saffron and Rose) are always available.
Be patient though. This place has been on TV a few times recently, and now they are uber popular. But it is a super tiny little shop, so the lines can get long, especially on a hot day.
The only reason I graded down one star was that on one visit I ordered the Saffron Pistachio and got a pistachio shell in my ice cream, along with a frozen piece of wax, and there was a strange odor in the shop that day. But other visits have been great, so I think it was a isolated incident. Parking in this neighborhood is also brutal, so be prepared to park a few blocks away and walk.
Despite it's popularity, they've kept the prices reasonable. ($3.50 for two scoops, $5 for three, $6 for four!) -

The ice cream deserves 5 stars for sure. Something awesome about the chewy, taffy-esque texture of this ice cream. :O~ I love finding those little lego-sized chunks of pure cream in the saffron and rose flavors. I've been there 10 times in the last 10 months; and though I've taste-tested most of the other flavors, I keep going back to that trusty combo.
They lose a star however as once I went with my mother in law to grab a few cups of ice cream, 25 minutes before closing. 15 minutes before closing, we were seated indoors and wolfing down our ice cream. They suddenly turned off the lights and stared at us while sweeping. I guess since no one else was there, they wanted to close up early. What up with that. -

Green tea!!!! I dream of it daily now. Also got the saffron + pistachio, but didn't loveeee it. The man at the counter was SO nice and inviting. He asked if we'd ever been there and when we said no, he proceeded to give us samples of almost every flavor they had. I wish I had room in my tummy for more. Can't wait to go back!

Heavenly. The bastani is superb! I also really like the dark chocolate and tonight it was recommended I have a very small scoop of cappucino alongside to bring out the chocolate ice cream and they were right on with that! Yummy! My husband always gets the faloudeh and he had a laugh at the description on the ice cream case "high fiber non-dairy dessert"--does that ever sound yummy?? ha! All their flavors are so perfect you cannot go wrong here! If you are walking and window shopping after stopping here then have them make an ice cream sandwich with the wafers, its the best way to end an evening!

Review from Susie K.
I was filled to the brim with food from Pomodoro. They always say, "save room for dessert!" and I never listen. This time was no exception. But my friends tell me it's THE best ice cream so I must try it. Normally when I hear people say something is "THE best ____," I am usually not impressed. It's tasty, but I don't dream about it. Our group heads over and it's packed inside, but the line moves swiftly. I was told that the chocolate is one of the best flavors. I get an okay sized portion. I pay, I taste, I die and go to ice cream heaven. Seriously. It is really that good. My husband is a coffee guy. I got him the coffee flavored ice cream and he devoured my chocolate. I dream about it, and the only thing that prevents me from living there is a lactose problem. Sorry, TMI, but really.
This is the type of place where I'll eat dinner in Ktown and hit Westwood for dessert. Screw convenience! I need to go back sometime this week now that I got started... -
Review from Calvin H.
Came back and tried some truly spectacular flavors that didn't taste like grandma's perfume collection. The saffron and pistachio was a lovely combination, and I particularly liked the guava, as it smelled like a perfectly ripe fruit. My dining companion really liked the cucumber and rose ice creams. The ice cream tasted even better with the sour cherry syrup on top to cut the sweetness.
The guy behind the counter was very liberal with the samples and told us all about how they make their ice cream and how the store came to be. Definitely worth the steep price tag!Listed in: LA-ish Dessert Spots

Review from Fia R.
This place sounds more metaphoric to me than literal. Oh sure the outside doesn't look so grand, but it's rare like saffron, yet so mystifyingly beautiful like a rose, with only small displays of thorns on its long stem.
It took me 2 memorable visits to finally write about this Persian ice cream joint: one w/ Daniel L & Lei B, and another w/ DL, Anthony N & Brian I. The thorny part is that you need patience, luck (e.g. walking long distance after a heavy sushi night or obtaining a handicap placard from Boo), & quarters in order to take precious time at S&R. In both encounters I discovered these divinely unique, myriad ice cream flavors that cost $3.50 for 2 scoops, $5 for 3, & $6 for 4.
The no-pun-intended sweet middle-aged lady, casually permitting my friends & me to nonstop sampling, already heightened my interest with ice cream, which I wasn't so much fond of until Thrifty recently came into my life =P. Most of them have this whip-like yet velvety, sticky & luscious consistency, which help S&R stand out from typical American ice cream or gelato. And out of all the sample flavors I could remember licking--Saffron, Chocolate, Red Rose, White Rose, Pistachio, Jasmine, Poppy Seed (mm hmm), Apple, Saffron-and-Pistachio--my signature ice cream just had to be White Rose for both of those 2 trips.
Tagging along w/ my flavor for my small scoop were the playful Apple (1st visit) & equally exotic Jasmine (2nd visit). But ahh, White Rose. It did remind me of Lette's macaron--only it's not. It sparked the adventurous, Foodie Fia even more intensely. If money were absolutely no issue & my morality didn't exist at all, I wanna buy the whole flavor & trademark it, just for me 0=]. Too bad I am no poet or songwriter like several of my Yelp buddies, but I made damn sure I let my palette sing & relished the daylights out of this beauty, every second & every walk through Westwood Blvd.
To be blunt, however, the common flavors, like chocolate & pistachio, weren't a knockout to leave any permanent scar on me (i.e. they'd exclusively be 3 stars). But if you're feeling a teeny bit adventurous & your curious tongue has relentlessly piqued on craving a new type of ice cream, Saffron & Rose is gleefully waiting for you. Hopefully you'll get more astounded w/ the rose than its thorns. Whoo hoo hoo for another long bookmark being checked off!! -

DELICIOUS! I came here with two friends on a weekday afternoon and the shop was pretty empty. I had never had Persian ice cream before, and so I didn't know what to expect. The guy behind the counter was super friendly and patient as he made recommendations for us and let us sample a ton of different flavors - all of which were so good! All the flavors are rose water based and have such a wonderful texture and light & airy taste!
Since my first visit, I've come back a couple times and had the Saffron & Rose, Rosewater, Cucumber, Pistachio - all absolutely tasty! The portions are normal for their price & you don't feel too guilty after eating it all since the ice cream is so refreshing! I am definitely coming back again to try out all their different flavors (which rotate daily, I believe)! -

This place is what ice cream parlors are supposed to be like!
Great variety, great tasting Ice Cream, and made with Organic ingredients. The guy that served me let me sample like 6 different flavors - very generous!
Ended up choosing the Almond and the Pistachio and loved it!
Probably the best ice cream in Los Angeles! -
Review from Ada L.
Finally went for the first time today. There were quite a few flavors I wanted to try, but I ended up getting the Saffron & Pistachio. It was rich and creamy with a unique taste because of the saffron.
Will come back again to try out other flavors. Unique, good quality ice cream at a decent price. I wouldn't bother sitting down there to eat though, since it's a tiny place and can get crowded easily. Parking can be inconvenient at times since it's on Westwood. -
Review from Bizhan P.
Los Angeles, CA
Saffron & Rose Ice Cream is a family run Persian Ice cream store that offers a wide variety of decadent ice cream flavors ranging from cucumber to saffron and pistachio. Picking a flavor is the only problem you will run into here, but you really cannot go wrong with any of the flavors, as they each have their own unique taste. That said, I would be remiss if I failed to mention that saffron and pistachio is king here as far as I'm concerned. However, If you still can't decide on a flavor, the staff are usually more than happy to let you sample as many as you heart desires, or rather, taste buds in this case.
Prices are relatively inexpensive, and serving sizes generous. A small scoop here is actually two scoops, which is plentiful even for an insatiable appetite like my own.
Whatever you end up eating, you will more than likely leave Saffron & Rose Ice cream satisfied and find yourself wanting to come back for more tasty Persian ice cream.
Also, it should be noted that you are given the option of eating your ice cream in either a cup or sandwiched between two wafers. Although quite messier than the traditional cup, I'd recommend the latter for the non-carb conscious, as it is how Persian ice cream should be eaten! -
Review from Halleh M.
Went here for the first time last night and loved it. I am Persian, so not all of their ice cream flavors were totally crazy to me, but I was pleasantly surprised at how creamy and well made everything was.
I also loved how willing the lady behind the counter was to give out samples. You could tell that she is proud of her product and wants you to love it as much as she does! I can't even remember all the different flavors I tried, but the ones that I loved the most were the cucumber, the poppy seed slush and of course the rosewater/saffron ice cream which is what we ended up getting.
We wanted to buy the largest prepackaged tub of it, but they had sold out, so the lady offered to give us two of the medium size ones for the same price as one of the large ones, which turned out to be a great deal! I will definitely be back here soon to try more of their delicious ice cream! -

Saffron & Rose Ice Cream or Mashti Malone's Ice Cream? (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
To eat, or not to eat,....I decided to try both places and here's my 2 scoops-
Ice Cream
Mashti- Saffron (tastes like Indian Kulfi) and Rosewater flavor. ($5 for 3 scoops)
S&R- Saffron & Pistachio and White Rose flavor ($5.99 for a large/3 scoops)
S&R ice cream is REALLY rich, thick, gooey, and creamy. Saffron & Pistachio is a MUST TRY. The flavor is amazing and the ice cream is loaded with pistachios. White rose smells and tastes like a rose..get a sample and see if you like it.
Masthi's ice cream is not as thick or rich as S&R and the flavor is more subtle and not too flowery. Saffron tasted the same as S&R (minus the pistachios), but the rosewater was very refreshing, light, and delicious.
Both places are good, but fwiw, I prefer Mashti over S&R.
Location
S&R is in Westwood. (Ugh, FUcla Town) Nice area, but parking is a nightmare. Mashti is located in a small strip mall on the corner of La Brea and Sunset and they even have their own designated parking spots. The area in general is a bit sketchy tho.
Service
The girl working at Mashti's was really sweet and nice and let me try different flavors. The guy (owner) at S&R wasn't too friendly and I felt very uncomfortable asking him for a sample.Listed in: SWEETNESS

Um okay, the custard based Persian ice cream here completely blows your mind and changes your perspective. Completely! It is that good. Dang...
I sampled many flavors, all of which were fabulous. They even had a cucumber ice cream which was unexpectedly delicious. I think it's pretty amazing if you are able to make cucumber, a somewhat bland, kinda throw-away vegetable, taste incredible in a dessert. I wish I had discovered this place sooner, or maybe not bc now so many calories will be devoted to this place -which conveniently, or unfortunately, is very close to where I live.
Anyway, I ended up getting the white rose water and the saffron w/ pistachios. Idk man, it kinda blew my mind. It brings me back to the days when my dad would take me to the Indian market and we would always get pistachio kulfi. Except that this is better.
I cannot express to you how happy I am to have discovered Saffron & Rose. This is an experience that you should not miss out on. Seriously.
