Review from Sharon J.
this is just for delivery service.
I was in the store the other night and could not help but notice the much greater variety and lower priced items you never see on the delivery site.
I wish they would correct that. But I did get up at 5 am and called the store, and the items I wanted were added to my order.
Safeway Delivery is a premium service, and while I appreciate the convenience, you're going to pay top dollar for many more items.
I'm kind of learning what to and what not to order from them. Heavy items that are on sale, yes. Anything I can carry, I would rather get at the store.
Honey tangerines and cherries are really, really good and priced favorably right now. Grapes are a little sour. Apples of all variety are wonderful.
Eat more fruit and less refined sugar, and life will be more fun!
In my many Safeway reviews, I'm not sure I've mentioned this but when I'm there, the deli people always give Daisy a big slice of roast beef, and they are so nice about it! Good people.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Safeway across the street from Ocean Beach? Nice!
Daytime BBQ at the beach?
Safeway is your one stop for food, beverage and charcoal!

Nearby bus stops & terminal available for routes 5, 18, 31 & 38!

Cashier #7: Sir, if you want to qualify for the $5 turkey, you have to purchase $25 worth of groceries.
Me: Oh, okay, I'll be right back.
Later
Cashier #7: Sir, you are 50 cents short of the $25 necessary to qualify for the $5 turkey.
Me: You didn't count the soy milk.
Cashier #7: Dairy doesn't count, sir.
Me: It's not dairy. It's soy.
Cashier #7: Sorry sir. It still says "milk."
Me: Are you serious?
Cashier #7: Sorry sir. Dairy products don't count.
Me: (grabbing a candy bar) Just count this and let me out of here! -

1 Star for the quality of the products and groceries here.
4 Stars taken off for the absolutely horrible customer service here. Tonight 02/07/12 8:20PM, I was inline trying to get my stuff checked out at the cashier counter. I laid the carrying case on the slider for a sec to unload the heavy stuff. I then immediately got yelled by this 40-50 years old Asian female cashier for doing just that. "Don't put it there, don't it put there!" she yelled. I was like, WTF? I tried to find the manager to file a complaint but somehow couldn't get the manager to me.
Arrrgh, horrible experience! -

My family has shopped at this store for over 25 years... The staff there are for the most part great. Sometimes you can't find what you are looking for, and they always try to help, but... The supplies are not ordered well.. I mean that there are many items that sell out fast, and it seems they are not ordering more of those items to make up for the demand. There are 5 basic items that I always keep in stock in my house, and I have trouble getting any of them at this location. I have asked to have items ordered in more quantity and been told that they don't even do the ordering, that it's a vendor who stocks the items... then after contacting the vendor, I found out that the store does in fact order them, and I was lied to... They also switched organic milk brands, which did not make me very happy, but when I emailed customer service, they were unable to give me the names of locations where I could get the milk I wanted until in the 4th email I finally said I would just go to their competitors... Then all of a sudden they were able to tell me which other Safeway locations had the milk I wanted... very poor service... very poor... Two weeks of emails and waiting for replies to finally get an answer to my original request. Sorry Safeway, but that's just sad.
Now I understand that sometimes stocks are low, or distributers don't have what you need. But when you are almost ALWAYS low or out of an item, you really need to order a larger supply, and look for a different distributer for those items. -

I was so excited when I found the berry lemonaid bread at this safeway. the safeway on noriga said this bread was discontinued???? so I thought, well this store is closer to my home. I got in line, no one waiting- I realized I forgot microwave popcorn( a must have for watching theJon Stewart.) I asked her where the popcorn was, she mumbbled in her sweater isle 8. I go there, no popcorn. I go up to a lady stocking stuff in this row-she said go to row 11. I go there pick up my popcorn and get back in line. short ladyclerk s muffles her words while talking into her scarf- she said you said ready to eat. I said no...blah blah, yadda yadda yadda, she would not shut up. Finally I asked her to just forget it. I go home , look at my receipt and she charged me %5.69 for 12 danishes. uuuuggghhhh. what is wrong with saeways?

This Safeway is nice for us outer Richmond folks. Built in the 1970's on former Playland at the beach property, this supermarket is a bit dated and could use an overhaul. That being said, there is a, bakery, deli, pharmacy, Wells Fargo branch (7 days week) nice!!!! The produce is always fresh and lots of parking and yo may recycle on-site.

Thank god a new grocery store opened up so I don't have to frequent this bullshit anymore.
This is really all you need to know about Safeway:
-Don't go unless you're at the beach and need a place to pee or need food quickly.
That's the only reason. Safeway is overpriced, their sales are a joke, this location happens to be extra grimey because it's so close to the beach and the customer service is a nightmare.
Not to mention the jerks that drive in the parking lot almost always run over pedestrians and mothers seem to have no interest in controlling their bratty trolls while shopping here.Listed in: The Richmond

Sept, 2011: Last weekend, the Safeway story of the Day was the transient/bum (I shouldn't be so quick to assume he was a bum with his unkempt look, dirty clothing and piss-odor, right? He might be a CEO of a solar company or something) with his pants unzipped, a mere inches from exposing his junk, standing next to customers a little too close.....and jeesh aren't I lucky, behind me in the check out counter standing right next to me---close enough I have to move away because I feel his jacket sleeve touching my arm. And the security guard's job there is what? Oh yea....stand there and do nothing but eat donuts.
__________
At the checkout counter yesterday, my old auntie and I notice an unkempt bum (there I go again!) leaning against the front counter with a backpack, short sleeved shirt and rubber gloves on. He is just looking at all the checkers and customers with his arms crossed. No one else seemed to notice this guy. None of the checkers or baggers seemed to look over at this dude or be bothered by a guy standing there with dark rubber gloves on.
Maybe he is just a germaphobe bum idling his afternoon away at Safeway...or maybe he is a serial killer on break....or maybe he is the new security guard.Listed in: Ah, Life!

This Safeway if open 24 hours and it is close to the beach!!!! When I get the late-night muchies, have no food, and not in the mood for take-out, I head over here.
I have also been to this Safeway pharmacy. The pharmacist and the other pharmacy employees are patient and friendly. Surprisingly, a lot of other people get the late muchies in the outer Richmond. The check-out lines are long, especially since only two are open.
What I recommend: come here anytime because they are open -

Okay, so it feels a little crazy to review a supermarket chain location like this, but this is pretty much the only supermarket in the Richmond District as far as I can tell. You have lot's of corner markets throughout of course, but Safeway is generally cheaper and has parking. This is also a weird place for a supermarket since you are literally only one block away from the ocean.
Inside it is basically like every Safeway I have ever been in, from SF to Berkeley to Walnut Creek to Sacramento. You have all the conveniences of a supermarket: pharmacy, several choices on every product, a fresh meat and fish section, and a parking lot--A PARKING LOT! Not crazy street parking that takes you fifteen minutes to find and leaves your car out of sight and open to for business for local stereo thieves.
As to prices, if you get the Safeway Card and actually go to website you can get even more than the usual discount. Just yesterday, I got a free dozen eggs and loaf of bread for just a buck. As far as I can tell it is a lot cheaper than the smaller grocery stores nearby and you don't have to spend the extra gas lugging buckets of food back to your joint.
My one qualm with all Safeways is that it is darn cold inside. I know they need to keep food from spoiling but still. (Okay, totally irrational complaint--I should just bring my hoodie.) -

I only go to lucky, and Trader joes now.
I don't know why but there just better than safe Way.
I think Safe Way has some real problems, and no one to really address them.
They just want to suck as much money out they can, and go to the government and ask for some free tax payer money.
Its sad a lot of us grew to rely on Safe Way, but now I have been to a few of them, and there all going down fast.
They love to say just tell the manger your problem and will fix it.
That's where you loose the game right there.
If people are so disappointed they need a manger, your behind in your job.
If your the manger of a safe way, start looking around you will find the problems, unless you have no skills.
Then yes you would need to be told the obvious.
And that's the problem.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Although there is a Safeway location slightly closer to my home in the Outer Sunset, my husband and I have made the La Playa Safeway our regular grocery store. Although this location is older, making the interior dated and threadbare, the extra square footage makes for wider aisles and more check stands. Parking is also a lot easier in the more suburban style lot. The service is much more friendly and personable compared to gourmet stores. I can't STAND the staff attitude at Whole Foods!!! I find Safeway prices a tad high, but it's San Francisco...and again, it's thankfully not Whole Foods. Look for sale items. There are often good deals. I'm with Yohanna B. though. Keep up the couponing! Woohoo!
I only take one star off for the cheesy impulse items and toys they sell. Outside of that, I love this Safeway! -

I recently relocated from San Jose, to San Fran, and this is the closest grocery store to where I'm living. Before relocating I was spoiled with a subsidiary of Safeway, known as The Market, across the street from my apartment.
For more then convenience purposes this Safeway gets four stars. First of all it is a full blown Safeway, not a smaller "downtown friendly" grocery store that only carries the more popular items. It has a pharmacy, which is great, considering there isn't another one to be found for a few miles.
One of the few down falls I can think of are the fact that the Organic produce section is one tiny stand of food... I'm not a die hard fan of organic foods so this doesn't bother me greatly. The other is that the store is busy at any hour of the day. I have tried going to the store between the normal Monday through Friday, 9am to 6pm working mans/womans shift and it is still packed. The isles are littered with people which makes shopping a bit hard but it is the only full service grocery store in the area so I suppose I should have expected that.
Over all convenience wins me over. I'm not going to drive miles out to buy groceries when there's a grocery store a few blocks away. And a full service pharmacy also within walking distance is great. -
Review from Bob S.
San Francisco, CA
This Safeway isn't as nice as the newer (or newly renovated) ones in the City, but it has one thing going for it: the parking lot is big, and you always can get a space (well, except when there's an event at the beach).
Most Safeway products are average, but some of their Eating Right dinners -- especially the Chicken Methi Malai and Cashew Chicken, and to a lesser extent the Roast Turkey -- make good, easy lunches at $2 a throw.
Overall, the staff is nice, but a couple of the cashiers drive me nuts. One talks incessantly about their personal problems, and another insists on telling me the "pre-Club Card" total before they tell me the actual cost three seconds later. That makes me crazy, because a lot of times I've brought along only enough money to pay for what I have (carefully calculated) to buy.
About the nasty bathroom(s?), I have a lot of sympathy for store management. Because the store's right by the beach, it gets all manner of people coming in to use them for all kinds of needs. I just don't expect the rest rooms to be very appetizing under those circumstances.
I've been shifting a lot of my grocery shopping to the new F&E in my neighborhood, which has some products I like (including several varieties of the hummus, the tomato basil chips, and a Cheetos-like snack that's as good as the real thing with a third of the saturated fat) and some everyday great deals (the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze and the $1.29-a-box microwave popcorn). I've found that, with the $5 off coupons F&E hands out liberally, I'm saving money by shopping there instead of at Safeway.
But I'll still visit here once a week for the products I've mentioned, as well as the brands. As anyone can tell from reading this review, food politics and food itself aren't that important to me, and this place is fine for like-minded individuals. -

I am addicted to couponing. If I were a suburban mom of three in Texas, I would totally be a candidate for Extreme Couponing. Alas, I'm a single woman living in San Francisco, so my couponing habit can only go so far. To date my record is a saving of 42%.
Sunday mornings is when I do my grocery shopping. This Safeway is open 24 hours, so I'll go at first light to avoid crowds. Those people in line do not have kind eyes when you are checking out with a wad of coupons. -

I am like the Safeway lady. I love shopping their sales and clearance areas. They typically have great service, this place was pretty good. It was clean inside and out, and there weren't too many homeless people hanging out in front. Parking wasn't too bad, although the driveway was blocked for a while as people pulled in and out of parking spaces.

I am not a big fan of this Safeway. Although, I am not a huge fan of any Safeway. I do my veggie shopping at an organic produce stand only a few blocks away, my essentials from Trader Joe's, and meat from Andronicos.
In fact, the only thing I go here for is the deli section. The guy who works there is great. Very friendly and will almost make you try something before he cuts it for you. More than once it has saved me from making a bad purchase.
The store is worth 1 star, but he is worth 2 by himself. Well done. -

Five stars that can pretty much all go to the Customer Service hottie that helped me with Coinstar about a year ago.
Coinstar did not accept all my coins and the machine alerted me to Customer Service where I first met Hottie. He counted the rejected coins which were accompanied by lint and pieces of hair, oh my! So embarrassing, yet he did not mind. CS Hottie is a natural man. That afternoon he made me feel like a natural woman.
Occasionally after that perfect afternoon I would be checking out my goods and spot him and start checking out his goods. I would fall into a trance.
I have not seen him in a while, though I have not been there in a while too.
I think I now see CS Hottie in the current Safeway commercial. He smiles at me and I smile back at him. I think I am nuts.
Hey, CS hottie if you are still at the LaPlaya Safeway, hit me up. I don't say this often, but what the hell. I'm gonna rock your world! So good baby! Oh yeah! Me love you long time! -
Review from Amy D.
Maybe it's because I'm from the suburbs that I can't fully appreciate this Safeway, but all the times I've come here, it's been like Costco before Thanksgiving or Christmas. You can barely maneuver yourself through the crowds, lines are WAY long, except Costco has a better layout. Most Safeways have peanut butter in one of the center aisles, closer to the breakfast foods. This one has it next to the bread.
PS- This Safeway is near the Nike Women's Marathon finish line, so it's kind of tempting to park in the lot, because there's no parking elsewhere. Don't do it. You'll get towed. -

Review from Autumn K.
This place is more like the Twilight Zone than a grocery store. It's the location. Those beach dwellers are an odd sort. Imagine what it takes, emotionally, to withstand the depression session that is the Ocean Beach region. I mean, 98% of the year, this beach doesn't see a ray of sunshine and the temperature rarely climbs past 50 degrees. Factor in sweeping winds, dense fog, and frequent rain and you see where I'm going with this. These strange people have an excuse, don't get me wrong.
On any given day at this Safeway, you may find your fellow shoppers mumbling to themselves, batting at imaginary bugs, or getting in your face and telling you to bite it because you brushed up against them on your way through the produce department. Last time I was there, I was yelled at by a woman with a massive gray mane, dressed in various shades of pink, with bright pink lipstick and a pink cane, because I was "reading the magazines for free when [I] should be paying for them like everyone else". She then asked me how it felt to be stealing money out of the pockets of magazine publishers. I actually bought the US Magazine. I was too afraid not to.
I also recently had the distinct and rare pleasure of waiting 19 minutes in the deli, holding a number that apparently meant nothing and waiting for the 7 people behind the counter to help 2 customers. You can imagine how badly I was craving barbecued chickens to have waited so unreasonably long. Then I had to walk the meat technician through every last step of her job. When I asked if she was new to this position, she stared blankly and informed me she's worked there for YEARS. Go figure.
At least there's never a line and it's almost as entertaining as the crackhead Safeway in my hood. Two solid points. Just don't try to cheat the system by reading the magazines while you wait in line. I have a feeling Pink Lady is a regular around these parts. -

The selection here is fine - nothing to complain about. So why only 3 stars? The clientele! (Kristina R and hubby excluded, of course). I once had my life threatened in this place while stopping by on my way to a friend's bbq in the neighborhood.
We were in a bit of a hurry and walking briskly through the store. I suppose this elderly lady didn't like our pace, for she turned around and yelled at my friend (completely unwarranted):
Crazy old lady: "You don't just go walking up on a person like that. It's really rude!"
My friend: "Uh....(complete shock and disbelief, utter loss for words)
Me (trying to let go of my Jersey and embrace my California): "Oh, I'm so sorry if that's what it seemed like. She certainly meant no offense by it. We are so sorry. We're just in a rush and maybe we were walking too quickly"
Crazy old lady (pulling a liter of Sprite out of her basket and waving it at me menacingly): "You get away from me right now or I'll bash your head in. Go away!"
Me (completely losing every ounce of California and remembering everything I learned in Jersey) "WHAT??? Are you completely out of your fu...(another friend put her hand over my mouth and pulled me into a checkout aisle - she's lucky she's got a good 8 inches on me!)"
We got to my friend's house and told him the story. He laughed and said shit like that always happens there.
So go, if you must, but you may want to consider packing heat.Listed in: Avoid Like the Plague!

5 stars to the checkers and baggers that work here. They are always friendly and helpful if needed.
1 star for the horrible selection of healthy food and prices. I once took a sample list of 10 things they sold at both TJ's and Safeway and TJ's was $15 less then Safeway.
p.s. does anyone clean the public mens bathroom? ever? seriously.
p.s.s. The one thing that annoys the hell out of me is how they are always trying to get donations for charity's. I'm sure people think "Oh...thats such a nice thing they are doing" but what they don't realize is that Safeway is collecting that money and donating it in their name and using it as a HUGE tax write off. Its not out of the goodness of their heart....it a business tactic to help their bottom line. -

Located steps away from Ocean Beach - where you can have 3-ft high or shorter bonfires for less than 25 people between Fulton and Lincoln, no alcohol, until 10pm - they stock firewood, kindling, lighter fluid, fire starters, long lighters, skewers, giant packs of hot dogs, marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate - AND THEY DON'T GOUGE YOU FOR IT.
Yay, Safeway, for helping make my bonfire dreams come true! -
Review from Steph D.
Oh the joy's of grocery shopping.
Mornings are filled with old people, afternoon/early evenings filled with last minute dinner shoppers, nights are nothing but drunkards buying more alcohol or wood for bonfires.
This Safeway has watched me grow up. My sister and I used to go grocery shopping with my mom - we'd get free cookies from the bakery. I bought my first pack of cigarettes here - legal that is. My first time purchasing beer was here, too.
We've seen all the employee turnovers, watched bag boys turn into cashiers, made friends with management, blah blah blah. Most of the staff remembers you if you're a regular..I personally go to the same checkers just because I know they'll treat me nicely. When I shop at night they always offer to walk me out but I usually say I don't need it. When the old security guard was working he'd always watch me walk out to make sure I get to my car safely. Most of the time I park in the handicap after 10pm if I'm by myself - I'm a jackass like that =P
Sometimes I'll get lucky and go shopping when the hot firemen are doing their shopping! Oh! And there's a Wells Fargo branch inside that's open on Sundays, score!Listed in: OuterRich

Bonfire! Totally the place to load up on 30 packs of beer, JD Lynchburg Lemonades & individual bottles of Gallo wine for your evening getting completely wasted on the beach. Anyway, this Safeway has the dirtiest public bathroom I have ever used. EVER. I had to hold my breath or I would've lost my dinner. And who wants to go to the bonfire with vomit breath?
The best was when I asked where the bathroom was and the young, african security guard told me that the bathroom was "just for me" and then immediately asked me how old I was. I asked him how old did he think I was and nodded my head yes when he asked if I was under 18. He classily walked away at this point. Maybe he's been caught before.Listed in: I Know What Boys Like

3 STARS for being open 24 HRS. NEG 2-STARS FOR "NOT" ENFORCING 15 ITEM EXPRESS LANE !
15 ITEM EXPRESS LANE ( except if you're a foreigner ) today it was Russians with approx 45 items in the "15 ITEM" express lane.
Did the checker enforce the rule?!? NOPE!!!!! ALL OF US IN LINE WAITED while they emptied their week's supply worth of groceries with not an ounce of consideration for anyone else who had to stand in this 10 minute line.
Too bad everyone was too polite to say anything. Well, except me. But miraculously, they forgot how to speak "english" even as I pointed to the 15 item express sign.
Did the checker back me up? NOPE. Did the people? YEP. What did the checker do? Ummmmmm. Nothing.
As I mentioned earlier there's a Lucky's in Lakeshore...they're not much better with lines, but they do enforce the express lanes!

We all know that Safeway basically sucks and we'd all much rather shop at Whole Foods if we could afford it or Trader Joes if we could only get in and out of the damn place without being on valium.
Nevertheless I am compelled to mention these two things:
1. You can get a Rug Doctor here for only $17 bux with your Safeway Card. I was stoked about that because I needed something to suck up all the dried cat puke on the rug (is that TMI?) OK so it is like a pro cleaning for only a fraction of the price
2. The flowers here are great value - they always last longer than a week

Going here has taught me something about myself:
There are certain go-to places I must have. I've got my breakfast stop, my bar, my commuter route, my favorite restaurants, my drugstore, my pizza place, my sushi place, but above all, I have my grocery store.
Safeway isn't my grocery store. Not even close. When I'm here I'm on edge. I see dirt, I see clutter, chaos, I see thugs hanging in the parking lot, I see underpaid and depressed workers. I see many sad sights at Safeway, but it's the only place I've found in Outer Richmond that sells MUNI passes. If anyone knows of another place, do tell! Save me from another trip... please. -

I flat out miss the Albertsons on 32nd. That place was great, then they went and closed up a bunch of stores in the city so I started going here and it sure never was as nice.
I really don't expect much from a Safeway honestly, but this one consistently has a lesser selection of what I'm looking for when I go in compared to just about ever other freakin' Safeway in the city. I go in this place with a list and always have things missing. How I got stuck with the short bus of the SF Safeways is beyond me.
The place just isn't as clean, nice and as well stocked as other Safeways. If you're in range of a few, go to another one. -

For big grocery shopping orders, this is the Safeway I go to, even though there are two closer. Why? It's bigger and therefore has a bigger selection. And due to its size, the aisles are wider than the Safeways on Taraval and Noriega, so there's less need to dance the shopping cart shuffle with fellow customers. Granted this is the luck of the geographic draw, but it helps make shopping go a bit faster.
Doesn't have everything I want (more Amy's soups please) but still a decent amount of what I do want. Some produce can be a might bit costlier than other grocers, so do your research.
