I was looking for a take out pizza place in the area, since i moved to astoria...i havent ordered pizza here.... and ofcourse, my first instinct was to check yelp... which i DID!!!
I read great revies about Sac's, which I have passed by a few times, thinking it looked like a pretty nice "slice"
I got the margarita pizza pie and calimari, awesomeeeee pizza! I saved their info on my phone--because I will be ordered from them AGAIN-for sure! :)

I initially didn't wanna bother with this place, but after seeing it rated very highly by one pizza expert and realizing that its one of the few coal-oven places that isn't descended from Lombardi's, I decided to check it out with a few friends.  Went in between lunch and dinner, and we were the only ones in the place aside from a few employees eating and maybe one other table.  Service was nothing to write home about, but not terrible either.  Atmosphere was ok, good for a pizzeria and I liked the glass room right on the street that wasn't overheated.  We decided just to grab a large cheese pie to keep things basic, although it interesting to note that to add fresh garlic to a pie costs as much as adding shrimp for some dumb reason.

The pizza looked great coming out, and tasted equally great.  The mozzarella was defintiely homemade, and had a nice flavor; they layered it under and on top of the sauce, which was a nice touch.  The crust had the characteristic char of a coal oven, and although I prefer it to be more well done, it also had a fluffiness at the edges.  The sauce stood out very well and brought everything together as it was sweet and light, with a nice flavor of basil added.  The basic toppings we asked for came out on little dishes which was a nice touch.  The cheese was actually freshly grated romano which was a change of pace, and it matched the sweet sauce perfectly.  The combination of all this combined into a great pie, one I would be willing to travel back for.

So how does this place stack up against the other coal giants?  Pretty well, actually.  I like it better than John's, Lombardi's, and Denino's.  However, I did like Patsy's better than it as well as some of the newer coal-hybrids, but granted I haven't tried Grimaldi's yet.  Regardless, Sac's is one of the better overall pizzas I've had in NY, but not the best.

I have lived by this place for nearly 3 years now and have never been. I'm a dedicated fan of Dino's just down the block. However, upon discussing the deliciousness of brick oven pizza, my friend recommended this place. So we headed down there and went in the "Pizza Slice" entrance (not the main restaurant part, even though they are pretty much separated by a single wall). I ordered two slices.

Meh is all I can really say. Having read reviews on here before devouring said slices, maybe I had my expectations set way too high. Well, they were shattered. The crust was too thin (I know that's how some people like it, BUT pizza crust SHOULD be able to hold up it's own weight.) This immediately fell apart on me and just became a messy eating experience. Something was missing too; maybe some spices?

Overall very bland, falls apart, no yummy brick oven taste to it. I'll stick with Dino's thank you.

(Dino's: SORRY I cheated on you. Please forgive me. You are my one and only choice for pizza on Long Island. How could I? Especially after you allowed me to see other pizza places so long as it remained on Manhattan Island! I'm WEAK!! FORGIVE ME!!!!!!!!)

BEST BRUNCH!!!  I have been coming to Sac's for 10 years and have been requesting they do a brunch for years.  My favorite is the lemon Ricotta Pancakes and the Frittata.  My sister loves the french toast.  The Bellini is fresh squeezed and delicious.

The pizza is great and the homemade raviolli is to die for.  I have 20 LBS I've been trying to lose and know as long as Sacs is here it will never happen!!

With regard to price I am surprised...they're comparable to the majority of the nice restaurants in Astoria.  The pizza is the pleasant surprise...a slice at the pizza places in the neighborhood charge pretty much but the same only with inferior ingredients.

Truly excellent thin-crust, fresh-mozzarella, coal-oven pizza. It's very good by NYC standards and outstanding for Astoria. The other food, sadly, tends to be overpriced and not that great. But really, the slices and pies are first-rate.

Sac's service is the best. I really believe that they hope you will come back.

The raviolis are creative and homemade. Love the pizza too.

Oh! Not that it's Italian fare, but bonus points for carrying Six Points Sweet Action draft beer from Brooklyn - yum!

If you want two regular thin slices come here.  They use a charcoal oven so it tastes good.

The chicken roll is good too.  It's big and cheesy.  Make sure to ask for marinara on the side.

I've never had any of their cooked foods (such as meats/fish) so I cannot say anything good or bad.

DONT come here for Brunch on weekends.  Not good...

We were looking for a really good Neapolitan (coal oven) style pizza.  My bf did some research on Chowhound and found one posting of this guy who had gone of a number of pizza joints and rated this as one of his top places to go... so we went.

We ordered a pizza (think it was called Mama's Old Fashioned Pizza)... and it was really good, esp the dough.  My bf loved it so much, that when he ventured onto his new culinary experience of making grilled pizzas on a bbq at a park, he went back to sac's to buy their dough.

I would definitely come back again just for the Mama's Old Fashioned Pizza!

Sac's Pizza Place is a low-key place that is great for hanging out with friends or for grabbing a quick bite. Their big windows make this spot a great place to chill with your friends or just people watch. They serve pizza whole or by the slice with various toppings to choose from. Their pizza crust is thin, light and crispy. Their pepperoni is not very greasy either. I liked their Sicilian, which has a thicker crust. Their white pizza is good too, but beware that it is quite cheesy. So, for those who are lactose intolerant, bring lactaid!

Sac's is just around the corner from my friend's place in Astoria, and I'd long been hearing my friends extoll the wonders of the pizza they create at this joint.  After finding that they're on http://restaurant.com for those cheap gift certificates, I knew Sac's would be a stop on my next trip to NYC.

My friend and I gorged ourselves on a huge Sicilian pie, loaded with sauce and cheese, along with prosciutto and fresh spinach.  It was so good!!  I can't even fathom words to describe the magic I felt when I took that first bite!  I was in heaven!

I know I will be dreamng about this pie for years to come!  In fact, I want some right now!  Do they deliver down the East Coast??

Sac's is just amazing; their pizza is simply top notch. I don't want to make a bold statement saying they have the best pizza ever but it's certainly one of my all time favorites. They use a coal oven which, through some sort of advanced scientific process, exponentially increases the yum factor of the slices. I always get two cheese and a soda and the price is pretty reasonable. Bottom line: If you are looking for great pizza in Astoria, look no further.

Took my girlfriend and her Mom to Sac's.

The pizza is very good here. The cowboy-style short ribs, marinated in tequilla, fell right off the bone. This is what they are like when they are cooked perfectly.

They vegetables they use all come from a farm in PA. The spinach was a revelation in olive oil and garlic. Corn on the cob was sweet like candy. This is how it's supposed to be, but rarely is, even at the best and most expensive restaurants.

And Sac's is not expensive. Add to that, the owner understands the lost art of hospitality. He made everyone in the place feel like a guest. Too bad other restaurants forgot how to do it like Sac's does it...

Recommended.

It's too pricey for Queen's.. but I guess locals go there because it's near by and coal oven pizza beats ordinary oven pizzas. I went with my friend and we shared mussels and a medium pie. The wine by glass is pretty affordable (5.5-9). The mussels in white wine were divine and we were given little pieces of pizza strips (one brushed with olive oil and herbs, the other brushed with a little tomato sauce). When the pizza came, I was a little disappointed by the crust. I'm used to the famous coal oven pizza's in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The sauce was pretty good, but it's worth it.

The pizza is DELICIOUS! I typically get a pie with a friend who lives around the corner - the Mama's style (chunky marinara sauce, slices of fresh mozzarella laid down, chunks of garlic in the sauce, and basil) with a few toppings.  The mushrooms are the real deal here - not from some can, and every pizza is made to order.  I've seen it with my own two eyes!  Crust is crispy and just perfection, and the dough complements the incredibly flavorful sauce superbly.  Further, it takes well under 15 minutes to ready a pie if you aren't in a queue.

The decor has much to be desired for, and I prefer to just get a pie and take it to go -- so not really the greatest date place, but whatever.  I did stay and ate at the bar once (we were just having some wine while we waited, but once our pizza came, we couldn't wait to take it home and ate it right there!).  Also, the restaurant is divided in two - one half is the restaurant (a little classed up), the other side, the pizza joint (fluorescent lighting, plastic table tops, a counter to eat at).

While I typically require top quality in all aspects of an eatery, including decor, to get the highest of ratings,  what pushes this place to the fifth star is the people and the prices! Everyone has always been incredibly nice here - just seriously good people.  You're treated like family, and in this close-knit neighborhood (and given how good the pizza is), there are many regulars.  Plus, when milk prices went down after an excessive rise, Sac's made the effort to bring prices BACK down! Who does that??? A LARGE mama's pizza is just $19.99, with two more toppings, just barely over $20 - incredible!

Sac's know their pizza and their people.  There is a LOT to be said for that. Bravo!

Delicious pizza. Brick oven, thin crust style. Sort of a cross between Lombardi's and Grimauldi's style. I'm not saying it's necessarily up to that level, but it's a jewel to have in Astoria and even worth a trip out of Manhattan for some of you more inclined to sample all of the best pizzas in the greater NYC area.

I've been twice and really enjoyed the pizza both times. The first time, I would say the sauce was a little over rich and overpowered the pizza. But, the second time the pizza's came really nicely balanced. Fresh mozzarella, a smattering of basil, really nice full flavor in the sauce and crisp crust.

Had the pasta once which was okay. Really appreciate the use of a pretty good quality extra virgin olive oil on the caprese salad. Oh, and, when I went for dinner they had this terrific foccacia with a bit of tomato sauce baked in before the meal that I could probably make a meal out of. No luck finding it when I went for lunch, though.

The place is a bit pricy particularly for toppings on the pizza and for entrees which is probably my only complaint.

Once upon a time, there was a joint named Sac's. It was a beautiful little place off the Broadway stop in Queens. With windows all around its white tablecloths and waiters of the finest degree, it boasted "world-renowned" pizza and promised incredible pasta and various Italian dishes.

So one day, Inspector Nati and her co-conspirator Kathleen set out to test Sac's claims. Did the glorious paper clippings taped on its storefront do the place justice indeed, or were they just creations of the Photoshop-proficient staff?

The suspense was immense and the spirits high as the inspecting duo walked in. Charged with the sudden excitement in the air, a waiter escorted them to the best table with the best view -- the corner one, right by the windows facing Broadway. As they sat down, the waiter smiled and even opened the window to let the warm breeze of summer caress Kathleen's back. Delighted, the two  began to have faith in the comfort of Sac's, and as they chewed the warm bread that had also been brought out in an instant, even their palates agreed to the atmosphere.

And then came the menu, whooping up images of creamy gnocchi, pasta drenched in vodka sauce, mouthwatering calzones, and of course, the signature pizza. It was going to be a very good lunch. Because neither Nati nor Kathleen felt like having the obvious choice, they decided to let other meticulous palates examine the all-famous pizza. Instead, the scrutinizing pair chose to explore other Sac's avenues.

Having been graciously welcomed by the light and comfortable aura, Inspector Nati decided to help Sac's meet her standards by letting the waiter serve her what the restaurant did best. But instead of a recommendation, the waiter mumbled a repetition of the menu she had already read twice, so Inspector Nati randomly chose a four-cheese gnocchi -- to make it easy for the incompetent waiter, after all. Witnessing the scene, Kat took the initiative to order a cheese calzone without questions. The waiter bowed and quickly disappeared.

He must have been frazzled, for he did not return during the whole meal. It was a second waiter that brought out the plates, about thirty minutes after the order. Famished by then, the inspectors were glad to finally connect with the human world again. They were very thirsty, too, you see, and they wanted to ask for water, but fearing the waiter might take their glasses for his own, they decided to keep their mouths shut, knowing that extracting hydration from the ice remaining in their glasses and the food on the table was more certain than the waiter's return. Nati was sure of that as she looked down at the foot-shaped gnocchi floating around in a bowl of runny cheese. "Who needs water when you got soup?"

Kat's imminent dining future at Sac's seemed a little more promising and a little drier. It was only when she cut into her calzone that the watery cheese poured out in a torrent there, too. But it was okay, because Kathleen was humble: There was still bread, and hopefully marinara sauce, if the waiter returned with it since he never brought it to begin with. She waited patiently, taking bites of the calzone in the meantime. Between bites, of course, she swept the chunky, cheesy liquid into the calzone with the now-cold bread. It was a very good exercise for her fingers, and for that she felt thankful.

In the meantime, Nati munched on the gnocchi. Despite its four cheeses, the food was bland -- and so she covered it with grated Parmesan, and only then did the dish acquire some taste. But a few bites later, the ultra cheesiness combined with the footy smell caught up with her stomach and Nati pushed her plate forward and sat back, rubbing her tummy. By then, Kathleen had toppled the breadbasket over her own dish, and she, too, was rubbing her belly in disgust. The sight of the cheese splattered all over her plate was revolting.

Suddenly, the waiter re-emerged from the murky depths of the Sac's kitchen, ready to pick up the pieces. A deep shade of basil green appeared on his face as he grimaced in disgust at the mess. But the inspecting duo didn't mind. No waiter's unpleasant face or depleting ice could tempt them into feeling any trace of guilt about their disapproval of the place -- not even the previously enjoyable windows and street views.

As for the amount of money asked of our mighty Inspectors, it was a small price to pay. Small price not because of the amount itself, but because at that point, after having traded two hours of their precious time for bloating and stomachaches, they were willing to empty whole bank accounts if it meant leaving the horrid joint faster to start the day they had planned at the Met.

As our dauntless heroes dawdled heavily out, they agreed never to return again -- and even hesitated later as they handed the leftover gnocchi to the starving man crouching on a sidewall of the museum.

So I'm visiting my cousin in NYC and he asks me what I want for lunch and before he can finish his sentence I blurt out "Pizza!"  As a pizza aficionado, I take full advantage of my visits to NYC which typically means we end up chowing down a slice while walking around after bar-hopping.  I popped into Sacs while my cousin waited outside.  The place is old school, small brick oven in back and some chrome/black tables in a small eating area.

The two slices of plain za were really interesting looking: very red sauce with oblong shapes of white cheese.  Biting into the slice revealed fresh, soft mozzerella and fresh tomatoes.  I'm thinking they must be using some type of fresher muzz and maybe doing a fresh, crushed tomato sauce instead of the typical pizza sauce.  Crust was good, a bit crisp with some chewiness, just about right.  I've done some of the best pizza in the country: Totonnos, Lombardis, Rays (NY) and Pepes/Sallys (New Haven) so I think I know my pies.  Overall it's a very, good slice, different than what you'd typically get but no complaints here!

4.0 stars for the pizza only.  The other items are the menu probably suck like other pizza/Italian joints.  I would've given this place 5.0 stars for the pizza if it hadn't been my discovery of DiFara's pizza in Midwood, Brooklyn.  That place is damn good.

The pizza here is good too.  It's cooked in a coal-fired brick oven.  That's the only way to get a crispy crust and soft inside.  you need high temperature and a gas oven ain't gonna cut it.  I don't think NYC allows anymore coal brick ovens due to a fire hazard.

Mmm thin crust pizza. I mean, I (like most of you, I'm sure) sometimes crave disgusting, greasy, thick pizza but usually I decide thin crust is the way to go and in those instances I go to Sac's. So good.

Dining in here is nice but it is a little steep (for someone in their 20's who could be considered a "starving artist") and more the kind of place I would rather my parents took me too. But we did go here for my boyfriend's birthday as a nice dinner out and had a great time. Good salads, good pasta, good portions.

I personally think Sac's is the best Brick Oven Pizza in New York.  Coal firing leaves dark crispy bits on the thin crust.  Homemade mozzarella made fresh daily (in house) is used sparingly on top of their delicious sauce.

Their meals are delicious as well.  Combine all that with a homey atmosphere, this place always makes me happy.

Just moved to the area and have already had Sac's twice in the past week.

First try was the pizza...excellent!  Thin, crispy, coal oven crust with fresh toppings.

Second try was pasta.  My wife had the linguine in olive oil (that was not very good) but I had the Gnocchi in ragu sauce and it was excellent.

Overall...everything I have had thus far has been quite good and reasonably priced.

Definitely recommend.

As a life-long Astoria resident who has an affinity for pizza, I can positively say this is one of my top 3 pizza places of all time. Service is quick,  (though it has never been overly friendly), and the regular brick oven slice is absolutely delicious. Sicilian slices are also good, as are the all tomato slices...but I believe the secret is in the cheese.

The 5 stars are for the pizza only.  Not impressed by the restaurant nor the food, nor the service.  Go the pizzeria side, order your slices/pie and leave.  That's your best bet.

Miss their slice's though, nothin' like it on Mars (Las Vegas), and you be hard pressed to find pizza much better in Queens.

The pizza is the star.  I've been to the restaurant a few times but its only ok and the non pizza items aren't a good value (pastas are only ok, chicken parm eh) - I prefer to go into the "take out" side of the business and order to carry out.  The sicilian slices (very large, thick squares, doughy interior with a crunchy, oiled crust) and plain slices (just on the thin side but still a significant bite with good taste and chew) are anywhere from good to excellent depending on the day and how recently they have been pulled from the brick oven (regardless of the style, pizzas are topped with what appears and tastes like a good, fresh mozzarella; the sauce is good, not too tart, not too mellow).  The spinach slices seem a little steep at first glance at $5-6, but they are a whole meal on their own (more of a pie than a pizza due to crust both on top and bottom) and provide a popeye dose of green vegetables to go with your cheese and crust - depending on my mood I'll even chalk it up as a semi healthy dinner.

Whenever possible ask for a slice of the regular cheese pizza straight out of the oven - they usually stack a few pizzas to handle rushes and serve from the oldest one but slices from pizzas right out of the oven rank among the best  I've ever tasted (stacking up favorably to the "boutique" places I've tried in the city) while slices that are reheated rank more like an 8.5 out of 10.

The other pizza places in Astoria, while pleasant, don't hold a candle to Sac's (Rizzo's is not close).  Expect to pay a little more but we're talking like an extra 50c a slice - best not to sweat it.

The take out pizza biz is 5 stars, the restaurant is 3, so I'm giving it a 4 overall.

Some of the best pizza I have ever had.   Perfect crust, awesome toppings (I recommend the mushroom).  If you are in the area (or even if not), you should give this place a try.

It saddens me to write this review. I have a substantial history with this place as you'll read...

The only reason I give it 3 stars is for the quality of food and before these 3 incidents, we had many, many great dining experiences at Sac's. I'm not quite sure what changed.

Sac's used to be our "go-to-anytime" place. We loved that it was just a couple blocks from our house. We even had a favorite waiter who took great care of us (we knew when he worked and wouldn't go otherwise). We took friends, family, and out of towners there. I never even looked at the menu because we had our favorite dishes (and surprisingly, we DID NOT go there for the pizza!)

Then one night we arrived and our beloved waiter was not working (he was on a vacation that we didn't know about). We were starving so we decided to stay. Combine that with my daring attempt at trying something new on the menu (a SPECIAL, no less), which came out terrible: Advertised as a fillet of fish..."absolutely boneless" the guy said. I literally had a cluster of bones in every bite. I couldn't eat my meal and decided to say something to the manager. We were such frequenters at this place, we didn't think it would be a big deal. Except it was! The manager was someone different that night and gave me a major 'tude and embarassed me in front of the rest of the patrons. We paid our bill, left and decided not to come back, at least for awhile.

A couple weeks later, my friend and I were starving for some pizza, so we decided to order some...from Sac's. It took 2 HOURS on a Sunday evening (remember, I live about 2 1/2 blocks away). I called the restaurant after an hour and they said it had left, so obviously it arrived not only ridiculously late, but also cold. When I called to complain, the same manager yelled and me and insisted that it was hot.

Third times the charm, right? Wrong. I recently went with my sister for dinner. Food was ok (came out cold, though I didn't say anything, took FOREVER to get the check, etc). The kicker was this: We decided to split the bill on 2 credit cards. We share a last name and therefore the credit cards do too (but looked totally different). I see my bank statement on-line a couple days later....turns out they charged ME twice, and her not at all. When I called to ask WTF, they said I'd only be able to get a credit if I could obtain her credit card # so they could get paid. I was like "THIS IS YOUR MISTAKE." I finally got my $.

So, it really sucks that our favorite place went down the drain. We need to find another mid-level Italian joint in the neighborhood now.

P.S. They're totally overpriced, too.

Edit: My reply to the non-review written on 12/5/07 by someone who is obviously associated with this restaurant and joined the site for the sole purpose to stick up for it. I find it far too coincidental that you just stumbled upon this and posted as your first review to this site....no photo, no info? Seriously.

1) I never claimed I was with a group of people. I was just with my boyfriend which I even sort of implied. I did say that the man embarassed me in front of the other patrons, which is true.

2) He did NOT take the dish off my check (and how would you claim to know that anyway?), or I would have been 100% pleased with the service, as always. That would have shown that they cared what we thought, since we were such great, consistent customers. Instead, he was stubborn and told me I was wrong. I've worked in food service before. That is not the right thing to do.

3) This website is for real reviews for the benefit of other users. That's all I posted. I WAS honest. Why would I have an ulterior motive for sabatoge? I spoke of the good experiences, the fabulous waiter we always enjoyed, the many MANY times we truly had an amazing experience there. I could have given it 1 or 2 stars, but I didn't. If every restaurant got 5 stars all the time, no one would stay in business.

4) This happened like, 6 months ago. You must have a great memory , fantastic hearing, and very little happening in your life to remember such details of another patrons' dinner fiasco....unless of course, you work there.

for the area -- 4 stars.  can't beat this local coal burning, thin crust place.  in thegrand scheme probably 3 stars, but am happy have it near.  Just had the sausage and mushroom the other night.  if you bring it home --- please please please heat it up in your oven to get that cracklin' crust.

You'll thank me later.

I expected better. The sauce tastes like it comes out of a can. Does it?

Sac's Place is a rare breed in that it boasts a coal oven and offers pizza BY THE SLICE!  That alone makes it a must for pizza snoops the world over.  Here's the best part: the pizza is delicious!  And it looks like a dream; its surface of sauce and cheese doing a cosmic dance and an underside brazed with the imprint of the oven's brick.

The restaurant is eighteen years old but the oven was added ten years ago.  While pies are baked in the brick oven, they are reheated for by-the-slice purchases in the standard deck oven.  Just look at the coal char if you don't believe me.

This place has great pizza and great live jazz band! I've had some other food from the menu and it doesn't compare to the pizza

Oopsy-daisy...wtf happened here?  i fell in love with Sac's pizza when i moved back to the neighborhood just 2 years ago.  After making many delivery orders that did not meet expectations I had to face facts...their pizza is really just a bit better than ok, and just a bit below good, and it's def not worth the $$$$.  bummer.  Now read what I had written when i was in denial...

People say you can find good, no, great pizza anywhere in New York, but what I find typically is the same uninspiring pizza over and over again, usually doing nothing more than filling your gut before a night of drinking.  Now I don't know how they do it, but somehow Sac's stands head and shoulders above the rest, but it will cost you.  Parting ways with $25 (large w/ pepperoni) has never been more justified than after the first bite of Sac's perfectly cooked brick oven pie.  Delivery is sometimes a bit slow, but if you throw it in the oven for 5 minutes, you'll be fine.  Together their sauce (made from tomatoes straight from the old country) and the globs of mozzarella make for the best pizza this side of the East River, if not the 5 Boroughs.

Absolutely delicious thin-crust pizza. I order the pepperoni (and I am not even a big fan of pepperoni in general). They slather on the pepperoni. The crispy thin crust, hot melting mozzarella cheese, delicious sauce, and the best-tasting pepperoni I've ever had make me one very happy girl whenever I eat here. Thank goodness that I don't live near here, so I would have a hard time not going in every day for a slice (or two).
