I try to come here every time I'm in New York. On trip, I ate here three days in a row. And had the same waitress each day! (She probably thought we were nuts!)

But the vegan reuben sandwich is the best--I am an addict!

Everything here is delicious, yet it feels healthy and soulful at the same time. Prices reasonable for NYC and vegetarian/"health" fare.  My only complaint is that it is small, and can be a little slow at time. But it's well worth it!

Yum!  Went here with a meat-loving friend who may have enjoyed it even more than I did!  The sandwiches are huge- we both got a soup & half sandwich combo, and also the lentil & sunflower seed pate (which was soooo good).  I enjoyed my tempeh reuben- it had lots of tempeh, and perhaps too much sauerkraut, but too much is always better than not enough (except salt & salad dressing, haha).  My friend got some tofu sandwich with dill mustard, which I tasted & also liked.  The soup was a healthy quantity as well.  Everything was simple, fresh & well prepared.

The service was friendly and our water glasses were always full, despite there being only one waiter!  My only complaint is that the place is rather small and the tables are very close together (good for the waiter, I guess) but hey, that's New York for you.  I will definitely come back some time & try other items on the menu, especially the tapas & smoothies.  It is a little pricey for lunch though, although very filling.  I highly recommend the lentil pate!  They also have a good selection of draft beers.  If I was at NYU Law I would probably come here all the time!

I really love vegan and healthy food, but this place just doesn't impress me. I think it's incredibly overpriced for what you get, and the salad selection is incredibly limited, which is odd ... since it's vegan.

Also, every time I have been there, the service has been impossibly slow. Like painfully so. And what's up with the decor? It's utterly bizarre.

The food is decent, but there are too many other places to get good vegan in this city.

So I eat lots of vegan food.   This place is ehhh ...it's okay.  Some of the stuff is pretty damn good, like the Korean BBQ appetizer, I forgot the real name; some dishes suck!!!  The turnip cakes were horrible!   Had to send them back, and I generally don't do that, yes it was that bad.   The pumpkin soup was bland and boring, but a large quantity.  They did have a special, some scallopini dish with tempeh.   That was fantastic, although it had nothing to do with the original scallopini dish.   Dessert was unimpressive, at least their chocolate peanut butter cake....I think they make it themselves.
    The server was very friendly.
    The bill was ridiculous!!!
    I won't be going back!

MY FAVORITE!!! Among all the restaurants in Manhattan, this is the one that I love the most! The majority of the dishes are SO tasty, and I don't really mind ordering the same dishes over and over again. The 3 Tapas deal is the best option to try more dishes in smaller portions - try the kale with Dijon mustard, it is surprisingly delicious! The desserts are also very good: some are healthy style (which I LIKE), and some are house-made decadent piece of heaven!
The place is simple but comfortable, and the huge windows make it very lit and perfect for an indoors Sunday brunch. Their brunch menu is SO good, I definitely recommend every dish there: banana french toast, walnut waffles, the scrambles, and sandwiches, etc - all delicious!

Food: Fantastic all around. Perfect food for your non-vegan friends. Although the menu items might not jump off the page-- they will jump off your dish. Amazing flavors. I asked myself, is this really vegan?! Amazing! A little bit pricey for the amount and types of food you get, but you are definitely paying for quality, and you can taste that!

    Service:  Slow. Super slow.

    Restaurant Decor:  what?

Overview: Definitely good to take-out from Sacred Chow. The Kale Caesar is to die for. I tried a lot of things off their menu, one thing better than the next. Simply delicious.

As my first vegan experience, I can't say I'm a big fan.  I came for Saturday Brunch at 11:30 with a friend of mine.  There were plenty of free tables, though service was a little on the slower side.

My friend ordered the banana french toast which was a huge portion and seemed to enjoy it.  I ordered the omega-3 waffle, which filled the plate and was topped with fruit and "cream".  The waffle was very dense- so dense I wish I had a steak knife to cut through it.  It was so difficult to cut that I only ate half of it- not because I didn't want to, but because it would've taken way too long to eat at the rate things were going with my dull butter knife.  The taste was very nutty and wasn't too bad, but the texture really put me off.  Maybe I picked the wrong menu item, because everyone around me seemed to really enjoy their food.

We came here for brunch on day with a Living Social voucher. The food was actually pretty good, but I'm not sure I'd come here again because of the rude lady waitressing/manning the place.

She first told us we had to wait like 15 minutes for people to leave a specific table for us to sit at, even though there was plenty of room where we could have sat together.

Then, after we were seated and settling in, my friend started to talk about the Living Social Voucher. The waitress lady shows up and starts barking about how we need to bring up the voucher to the register -NOW- if we want to use it. I figured we'd give it to her when she came to take our orders, but ok. I was turned off by how one of us had to get up and walk over to the register to activate the voucher, instead of her taking the voucher herself...

Like I said before, the food is actually really tasty. I have issues with my vegan banana french toast being called a french toast. It was more like a thick slice of banana bread topped with fruit. Not french toasty at all.

So if you come here, you will see that there is a reason why it is called "Sacred" Chow. For starters, the chow was pretty sacred. Sacred Chow is a tapas restaurant. In case you are unfamiliar, tapas means you usually pick a designated number of dishes that are smaller in quantity so that you get to sample a bit of everything. More recently, I have been eating vegetarian food because of my gf and I must say, coming from a big meat eater, the quality of the food here is excellent! One of the highlights was most certainly the meatballs. I dare you to give them to a someone, vegetarian or not, and see if they won't like them. They are that good! Some other dishes that stood out included the blackstrap BBQ seitan, root vegetable latkes, and peanut soba noodles. The overall ambiance of Sacred Chow is nice and cozy from its quiet location on Sullivan St. to the warm and welcoming staff that is happy to address any questions you may have. For the city, this meal was fairly inexpensive and was well worth the $ spent. I can't wait to come back, and I hope you will give them a try!

I must say again.. I seriously LOVE this place. Since the last times I visited I wasn't a vegetarian, but I am now and love this just the same. The ambiance is great.

Top 3 favorites: curried steamed broccoli, Korean tofu cutlets, and peanut soba noodles.. when I say you need to have these, I mean YOU NEED TO HAVE THESE. We always go for 3 for $18 and get 6. We're overachievers, we are. Hostess/waitress has always been great to us, it's nice to see the same face there and she remembered us too! How exciting for us!

I would not suggest the meatballs, not my taste. But the three up there ^^ NEED TO BE TRIED.. just saying :) I make my boyfriend drive us to NYC just for this place and I will do it again soon. Love it here!!!

Soy meatball sub was good, and the vegan reuben was well-balanced. I especially liked how the sauerkraut didn't overpower everything. Service was fast. I need to come back and try the waffles with coconut cream.

Went here on Sunday for brunch because a friend suggested it as being one of the best places for vegan brunch in NYC.  We didn't get there till 2:30pm so I was happy to see they serve brunch till 4pm but you can also order off their regular menu too.

It wasn't that busy so we were able to sit right away.  We ordered the biscuits and gravy (delicious but almost too much tofu on top), the caesar salad (big portion for a small size and very good), the meatball sub with daiya cheese, and some type of seitan hero.  My 2 other friends enjoyed their meals and I enjoyed mine.  I also tried bites of their meals and loved everything.

I would give this place a 5 star except for two reasons:

    1)  the server was just dissinterested in us and even being there.  She spent a lot of her time texting versus chatting with us about the menu or how things were

    2)  I ordered the caesar salad for us to split as an appetizer but it came out the same time as our meal. Ok whatever but what annoyed me even more was that my biscuits and gravy dish came with a salad and I'm pretty sure it was the caesar dressing. The server should have told me my dish already came with it so I didn't end up ordering double the salad.  There were many other appetizers we could have tried.

Anyway the meal was delicious, I'm sure I'll come back sometime - you can check out the pictures to see the food.

Had dinner here with a girlfriend the other night.

    We had the following:
-Sunflower Lentil Paté: I guess it was my favorite. Crostini had good flavor and crunch, pate was sort of like hummus, which I guess makes sense.
-Sesame Collard Greens: Friend is a big fan of collard greens and happy to see them on the menu since they're rarely made vegetarian elsewhere. I thought it was just ok.
-Roasted Black Olive Seitan: Kind of had the taste and consistency of soggy olive bread, which sounds worse than it tasted. I actually liked it, just that the texture was a little unexpected.
-Mama's Soy Meatballs: Sauce was too salty.
-Grilled Western Tofu: I think I was ok with this one.

She also had a bottle of cider, and me a glass of their white sangria, which was refreshing but seemed a little weak.

Cute place, but wasn't totally impressed and probably won't be back.

I do have to note that a girl from the table next to us left her jacket on the chair. We tried to call out to her as she walked out the door, but it was too late, so we told the lone employee/waiter (owner?) thinking that he would just hold it behind the counter. Instead, he quickly grabbed the jacket and successfully chased her down the street to give it to her. Now that's service!

Go here the next time you dine with Jews who strictly keep kosher or vegans or the next time you're looking for a surprisingly filling, well made meal without meat. I rarely find myself in such situations, but, when I do, I'm coming back to Sacred Chow.

First of all, I, for some reason, thought I needed a reservation (you definitely don't-at least not during the week) so I emailed the restaurant only to come into correspondence with Cliff, a gentleman so warm, I was excited for dinner hours before stepping in.

Secondly, the waiter (Sacred Chow is tiny so there is only one) is very helpful and patient.

Third, the food delivers. I went in after a day of fasting and was definitely thinking that I would have to run out for street meat after my vegan meal. Instead, I left brimming with food and with food packed to go. $18 for 3 tapas is absolutely the way to go-no one seemed unhappy with their choices but I especially loved the meatballs, soba noodles, and olive seitan (which, thankfully, doesn't have an olive taste at all).

A wonderful, tiny spot for dinner.

Only basing my review on brunch visits because i've yet to order any lunch items.

I've had 3 different items off the brunch menu and all were delicious! ESPECIALLY the vegan french toast!! I can't even describe how good it was.

This is one of my favorite restaurants due to the fact that they take everything into consideration. Organic, local when possible, compostable waste products, etc......these things should all be commonplace, but kudos to Sacred Chow for making it happen.

Not the fastest, but that's not a complaint, it's just small. Only mentioning for those trying to eat in a hurry.

Tried to go there last weekend and was told (despite getting there at 9 when they close at 11) that they weren't seating people anymore. We had a Living Social voucher that was set to expire (as I'm assuming everyone else did too), to which the curt reply was that we can take the value we paid and apply it another time. (Which defeats the entire purpose of buying a deal online.) Considering I've been here numerous times before when the staff is friendly and unflustered (I even had a birthday dinner here a few years back since I've loved Sacred Chow for forever) I was shocked they weren't more accommodating.

    :::Sigh:::

The only thing wrong with this restaurant, is that it isn't located right outside my door.  I loved how small it was (though we were lucky to get in while we did, since it was packed 15 minutes later).  The food was fantastic!  I'm vegan, but took my meat-eating friend along, and she loved everything we had as well.

As for the meal:  We split 3 tapas (Black strap BBQ Seitan, Root Latkas, and Cornmeal crusted Tofu).  All three were awesome, but could have used some greens underneath each portion; as I was left craving some fresh greens to even everything out.  Luckily, my friend also ordered a special (saag paneer), so I was able to grab some greens from that.

Like everyone before me, yes, there was only 1 waiter.  Since I was dining out in a liesurely way, I didn't mind the time that was tacked onto the dinner because of this.  Really, I just felt bad for him.  Even though it's tiny, there are still 10+ tables, so he was VERY busy.

Overall, I will be back asap :).  SO GOOD!

    ** MANNERS NEED WORK **

My friend and I arranged to meet here last night, but alas, it was not meant to be. The hostess/waitress/(whatever) working was so completely rude to me that I got up and walked out before my friend even arrived. Shame we didn't get to try the food, really, the gluten free wraps seemed really interesting. Oh well. Here's a tip: Don't bark at your customers the moment they walk in your restaurant and perhaps they will stay to actually eat.

Anyway, we walked over to Red Bamboo where we were treated properly and had a lovely dinner.

Lovely, that's what this place is.

We had breakfast. I had biscuits and gravy. Exactly what I craved and as you can imagine is really hard to find for a vegan. My friend had a vegan omelete and the tofu omelete was a little softer than it probably should have been. His side was a salad, mine was steamed greens. In both cases, we got about twice the food we really needed.

The hostess was delightful. The coffee - ok.

I can't wait to go back for lunch or dinner.

Nice little cozy place tucked away around the corner from IFC.

Decent pressed juice/veg drink options yet a bit pricey (although nothing unexpected).  They basically ruined their 4 Seasons salad by shredding everything.  It reminded me of a 20-gallon vat of college-level house salad in the mess hall.

They do have (or had) the worst art that I have ever seen on the walls, with unthinkable price tags.  Anyone capable of drafting an Artist's Statement seems to be justified in destroying a perfectly good white canvas with a crippled geriatric hand (or foot).  At least they're not shitty photographs like at Gallery Bar.

I would definitely like to come in here on a weeknight for drinks (of any variety) and hopefully it's quiet and comfortable with an unpretentious vibe.  That is what I predict.  I'm not too into vegan food but it's a creative space with nice people and organic options.  I might also predict that this could be my favorite beverage bungalow, especially if I increase my IFC movie schedule (not unlikely).  I could also see completing a 10-day green juice cleanse here exclusively, far sooner than I will actually buy my own $300 juicer (but I really want one).

The size is typical for a vegan place in Manhattan. There is only 1 server. But if well prepared, simple plant food is your goal, Sacred Cow is an excellent choice.

We went there for lunch and split the meatless meatball hero with Daiya mozzarella cheese. The bread was an old world style baguette with lots of flavor and texture. The meatballs have a great texture and nice flavor. Vegan or not, this sandwich was delicious.

We also shared a variety of tapas. Each was flavorful and the lo mien downright delectable in it's peanut sauce.

Pricing is typical for similar restaurants in Manhattan.

I love to order the 3 tapas deal.  The best are: Dijon Marinated Raw Kale, Grilled Western Tofu, and then I pick something off of their specials menu (which usually changes daily)  And then for dessert...The best: Chocolate Truffle Cake.

In addition to the delicious food, the wait staff are friendly and are well aware of food allergies/intolerances and I have never been disappointed!

Last Saturday when the weather took a strange gray and misty form (which I was completely unprepared for) we ducked into Sacred Chow for some brunch time grubbing. I have been to SC on two previous occasions and was never blown away by the offerings but appreciated their existence (ya know?). Nevertheless, I bought a livingsocial deal recently which brought me back to SC. My friend is not a vegetarian by any stretch but was open to giving brunch a test drive.

The hostess/waitress/sever was rather obsessed with keeping the seating by the big window open, turning down EVERYONE who requested the seats "because a group of six may come in"! At least she was consistent---even by the end of our stay when the restaurant was completely empty but for us, a couple comes in, requests the seats, and she shooed them toward a back table. It would seem on such a gloomy day, you would *want* to advertise your food by having people right up front and center happily eating--but whadda I know?

    Back to the MEAL....

    ....we ordered:

**Italian Frittata Tofu omelet filled w/Sicilian tomato sauce w/ garden salad**
This looked so beautiful and yummy (there is no other word-sorry!) that I wanted to devour it immediately. Unfortunately, the omelet was not heated all the way through with cold spots and unmelted Diaya cheese throughout. Additionally, they could really scale back on the amount of Diaya cheese used in general--but the sauce was GREAT!!

**Breakfast Sandwich Soy buttermilk biscuit filled w/tofu scramble & tempeh strips**
this was actually exciting to watch someone have their first 'vegan breakfast' experience--she never had tofu scramble or tempeh before and loved it! The only detraction was the "marshmallow-looking cheese" aka Diaya cheese; she could not get with the consistency and the amount. Overall, however, the sandwich was a great success.

    **Apple Blueberry Crisp**
I didn't get this with ice cream (purposeful mistake) so i really could taste what was really going on with this crisp...which was very tasty but not crispy at all. The topping was pretty packed down so it didn't get a chance to really brown up. My suggestion is to always get this with some ice cream activity.

Sacred Chow definitely still has some kinks to work out but its a decent veg restaurant and I'm glad they're around.

I'm writing this review after having eaten at Candle Cafe the day before our visit to Sacred Chow. My partner and I agreed that our meal at Candle was joyless: the staff exhibited neither happiness nor joy in their service or the meals, and you could taste the lack of positive energy in the food. Sacred Chow serves food abundant with joy and makes you feel...well, happy.

The honeydew avocado bisque is gorgeous, especially in these hot summer days. The chow slaw is not what you expect from the slaws I grew up with (and learned to eschew), and for that I am so very, very grateful. I wanted to steal away the crostini from the sunflower lentil pate and dip them into the bisque. Hell, I wanted to run my tongue around the bowl before returning the empty dish to our server.

    Go. A million times go.

I love tapas..My Dad used to call me a bird growing up because I would eat like I was pecking at all the different plates - little nibbles here, little nibbles there. Now, some-twenty odd years later that translates into a love of tapas (my more mature way of eating like a bird). Unforunately very few tapas restaurants cater to vegetarians...luckily I came across Sacred Chow to solve this problem (and luckily I went with a Living Social coupon).

The food here is delicious!! So flavorful and so filling, I totally forgot this was a vegan restaurant!

    A few us split:

    - Root vegetable latkes with Indonesian sauce: One of my favorites. The sauce is so interesting!

    - Mama's soy Meatballs: Spicy! I would guess this tastes pretty close to the real thing.

    - Korean tofu cutlets: Sweeter than I expected, the maple syrup + consistency of the cutlets reminded me of french toast.

    - Dijon marinated raw kale: HUGE bowl of kale. The dijon was delicious

    - Rice of the day: Coconuty. Quite good.

    - Vegetable of the day: Cucumber alioli. Not at all what I was expecting, but very refreshing nonetheless.

We really went all out on this visit to Sacred Chow, because we also got the pitcher of sangria with dinner (probably could have done without this) and the apple blueberry crisp with ice cream for dessert.  The dessert was quite unique and amazing as well..

The brunch menu looks delic as do the non-tapas items (heros, salads, etc) and I would be happy to come back to Sacred Chow anytime anyone wants to go (hint, hint).

Sacred Chow was my favorite place when we first moved to NYC about 4 years ago now, wow. It sadly is not extremely consistent any more and the quality has gone down on some items. I also would love it if they changed their menu at all.

The prices are pretty high for most things but the sandwiches are reasonable and they have some of the best vegan desserts in the city. The sinner bar is amazing, also the hot chocolate.

I've come for brunch a number of times and always hope the menu will change a bit with the seasons or even ever, but always the same and it's alright nothing incredible. The hash is good probably my favorite on the list, the tofu scramble tastes really odd to me too much nutritional yeast maybe. Outside of brunch they offer Tapas which are small plates that aren't impressive and seem like the overpriced choice. The sandwiches are consistent and good and on par with 'snice for sure.

I came here with a friend who had bought a groupon for the restaurant (yay groupons!).  I should note that my friend is not even vegetarian, although he eats vegetarian food with me quite frequently and enjoys it.

We got two starters - the sesame collard greens and the sunflower lentil paté.  The paté was AMAZING.  Everyone should order it when they eat here!

The menu has a large tapas selection, so we decided to order three and share them all:  the orange backstrap bbq seitan, Indonesian roasted tempeh, and root vegetable latkes.  All delicious!  And even though they weren't incredibly large dishes (like most tapas) we felt full by the time we had finished the last one.

...but we still had to order dessert, of course.  They were out of the one I wanted to order (a special which doesn't appear to be on their permanent menu), so we got a blueberry cobbler type pie instead.  It was pretty good, but not as amazing as the rest of the food had been.  I'd definitely come back here for lunch or dinner again though.

Came here after buying a living social deal and so glad I did! The place is small but sweet - totally doable for dinner (I thought it was a quick in/out lunch place). The food quality was good, staff was friendly but service was a bit slow. They didn't seem to be exceptionally busy but it was tasty when it got there. Yes, the food's pricey but it's filling so I'd suggest ordering the 3 tapas for $18 and ordering more if you need to after.

We topped it off with an orange chocolate chip pound cake, vanilla soy ice cream and choc. syrup (rice) MmMmm so glad we didn't leave without a dessert! We'll be back for sure!

*The reuben sub tasted nothing like a true reuben but it was good.

Looks like they took care of the "no free coffee refills" sitch by adding the info to the menu... that made me happy to see.

The decor is far cleaner and brighter than years gone by.

The food tastes better and I'm going to say... it's better than Curly's! Food seems healthier than at Curly's.

I shared the new Kale Caesar salad, that was fantastic and I'm sure to have that again in the future. My party of three shared three tapas (couscous and cauliflower, seitan, meatballs)  and an appetizer of chard and that was plenty for lunch. We also shared the decadent chocolate cake.

    I'm coming back!

Food: Really good Tempeh Ruben- except that although it was a hero it did not come with the slaw or pickle promised. Why did I not simply ask for this?

Service: Slow. Waiter had a really bad attitude. Snapped at my question concerning the dressing and gawked at my questioning my friend if she wanted to order dessert ahead of time. As someone with only an hour of lunch, and knowing it can take a while to get food- even dessert out- I asked my friend. This waiter made my experience one star less. This is a place I will take out food instead from now on.

I have been eating at Sacred Chow for a few years now, and it just gets better and better.  I love that they have daily-changing specials and that the menu options are varied and creative.  No boring grilled vegetable/hummus wraps here!

The servers are also really lovely.

The only thing I wish they'd offer is the option to adjust the level of spiciness in some of their dishes.  I'm a huge seitan lover, but I find that several of their seitan options (such as the bbq seitan and the black olive seitan) are prepared very spicey.  I once asked my server if they could make the bbq seitan w/o the red pepper flakes, and he told me the sauce was pre-mixed and that it couldn't be adjusted.

I love eating here. I'm a regular! I love some spa salad & am always excited to find out about the specials. What really makes Me keep coming (w/ friends ), is my favorite server Ben. He kicks my experience there up a few notches! And he's a passionate Vegan!

This is very typical of how I begin my "4 Star" reviews, so here goes -- WOW!

Sacred Chow, you were right under my newly vegetarian nose this whole time and yet my blind heart led me astray from you time and time again. By the grace of Chow I had $6 on me for your hero lunch special!

And it was a special lunch special indeed!

Let me be clear, I did not have The Soy Meatball Hero -- it had me! Enough said. I will be back!

I was looking for a nice salad for dinner one night and found Sacred Chow.

All in all, not bad but a bit pricey for the value. Pretty small restaurant and it was hot. But the food was good. I had a seasonal salad with beets and yucca.

I think I'll have to come back and try some of the small plates, but right now I wasn't terribly impressed

Sacred Chow has sacred chow. My boyfriend and I each ordered Tapas (in which you order 3 dishes) and were so incredibly full. We couldn't finish our meals and were unable to take the leftovers with us because we were visiting the city for the day. Anyway, we ordered:

    Grilled Western Tofu
    Roasted Black Olive Seitan
Mama's Soy Meatballs (Best. I've. Ever. Had.)
    Sunflower Lentil Pate
    Dijon Marinated Kale
Grain of the Day (Mushroom Risotto)

My only complaint.... wish I had known about the 20% discount for students...

Nonetheless, this is now my favorite vegan restaurant. The end.

The one time we were there, we had abysmal service (the waiter was much more interested in his phone than his (one) table), and the food was completely unnoteworthy.  It fulfilled all the stereotypes of bland and unappetizing vegetarian food.

What's really galling is just that there's a dozen amazing vegetarian places all around the Village; I'm lucky that I had been to those before coming to Sacred Chow, or else it might have scared me away from vegetarian food entirely.
