If you need a place to take the kids that will entertain them for a couple hours, the zoo is a great place. The look on my son's face while seeing this first monitor lizard was priceless. Seeing him back up as the chimp walked up to the window to see him, also priceless. Three of the chimps came right up to the window to play with the kids. It was great until the one of them defecated and the ate it. I could totally have passed on that. The giraffes are still my favorite though. The Zoo is also in the process of building a new site for them which includes a gazebo. I am looking forward to going back and seeing that.

It's $9.50 to get it. The entertainment book has a BOGO coupon, although it is only good for 2 adults and can only be used once.

It took us two hours to go through the zoo and we were even a bit rushed. Great way to spend a Saturday early afternoon.

The saying goes, "You get what you pay for.." which is completely true for the Sacramento Zoo. Compared to the other Zoos in the Northern California area I'd say the Sacramento Zoo was the least expensive to visit. After viewing their prices online I was excited to pack the little one up and take her to see the whole Tiger, Lions and Bears..but "oh my"... we were sadly disappointed.

It took us less than 2 hours to walk around the entire zoo (and that was taking our time). There were a good handful of animals not on exhibit for whatever reason. Looking back all I recall seeing were tons of exotic birds in far away cages. They had birds everywhere! I'm sorry but when I think of "Zoo" I think of tigers and lions and zebras. Don't get me wrong, they had that but there were only 2 of each of those animals when we went. I couldn't help but notice the small space that the animals were given. I secretly wanted to sneak in and free them all at night but that would mean me missing the little ones bedtime story.

So again, the exhibits were boring and the space was small. The children's play area was nothing to get excited about. I prefer SF and Oakland over Sacramento any day. I'd rather pay more so I could see more. The inexpensive admission price says a lot about the Zoo.

We come to the Sacramento Zoo all the time. The price is decent at about $10 for an adult. If you haven't been here in a while, it might be time to try again. The old cement prison-house-looking animal internment camp has been upgraded from an Abu Grhaib to almost as nice as Guantanamo Bay.

This is not a sprawling estate, particularly when compared to the other local options like Oakland and San Francisco, but the size makes for a a very one-on-one experience with the animals, their handlers, and the occasional groundskeeper.

Be sure to check out the primate area and the reptile area. Best two spots of the whole place.

Oh, the company that they brought in to do the funnel cake sales used an animal-base to cook the food so don't buy the funnel cake if you don;t eat meat because it tastes like a sugar-coated cheeseburger (I just know that someone reading this will make a fortune selling my sugerburger idea to American fast food executives in silk suits stretched tight over cellulose infused backskin *shudder*).

On Oct the 10th we took our grand nephew to the zoo. Even though there was a big First 5 of Sacramento county event going on it did not feel too crowded. The animal exhibits were very good as you could get pretty close to seeing the animals. Animals have different levels of activity at various times of the day and they are not all active at the same time. The best way to see to see them depends on how they are displayed. This zoo has done a very good job at making sure that no matter where the animal is in their enclosure you can still get a good look at the animal. Our little nephew had a great time.
We ate at the Kampala cafe which is OK. This zoo while not as old and not as big as the S.F zoo does better at the displays it has. This zoo is excellent for families with children. We will gladly return with our nephew.

This is just a review of the Boo at the Zoo event we attended on Halloween night. It was mostly a lot of waiting in line to play a half-baked game and get a piece of candy. My kids were ready to leave after the first two lines took nearly half an hour. My poor friends with a one-year old were even worse off--what kid that age can handle so many lines and waiting. For what we spent, it was not worth it.

First time to Sacramento Zoo for their Annual Sacramento Museum Day 2009 - FREE first Sat in February.  I love going to anyplace FREE, makes me so Happy!

I never new there was a Sacramento Zoo until a few years ago and we finally got to go 2/7/09.  It wasn't too crowded at 10:15am when we got there.  The FREE ice cream truck was back again this yr - don't get the huge orange popsicle, always get the chocolate bar.  I screwed up there.

The zoo is small and you can see it all in about 2 hrs.  We saw many animals, though not all of course.

Animals we saw:

Black & white ruffed lemur
Chimpanzee
Coquerel's sifaka
Sumatran orangutan
White-faced saki
White-handed gibbon

African lion
Jaguar
Snow leopard
Sumatran tiger

Addax
Bongo
Grevy's zebra - 2 I saw
Retriculated giraffe - there's 3

Bennett's wallaby
Giant anteater - huge thing
Red panda - very small & cute, saw 3 of them.
Two-toed sloth

Reptile House - had to wait in a long line, worth it though.
Snakes
lizards
Tree frogs - cute
Turtles/tortoises

Abyssinian ground hornbill
African gray parrot
American flamingos- lots of them
Bateleur eagle
Buton hornbill
Emu
Great hornbill
Kookaburra
Lady Ross' turaco
Ostrich
Rosybill pochard

There's food available in the Kampala Cafe.  Fried chicken pieces (2-3) w/ french fries hubby got for like $5.25.  I ate my lunch I brought.  Bring your own lunch & drinks to save money.  Many tables outside to have a picnic.

Zoo Open Daily
9 am to 4 pm
Admission $6.50 - $9.50
Free On-Street Parking

I've never been to the Sacramento Zoo in all my years living here.. All I heard was that it's a sad, sad zoo. The habitats are too small and that they didn't have much..

So I was afraid of what I would see and worried that it was going to be a depressing sight like the SPCA commercial with Sarah McClachlan. But it wasn't.

We actually had a good time finding our way around. Admission was $9.50.. We didn't take the train around but there is one for an extra dollar. There was little signs at stops where you can call on your cell phone for some audio education. We didn't use that either.. I did, however, tried to use a board that had buttons (LOVE PRESSING BUTTONS) to press for animal noise.. and it didn't work. Like, out of battery/electrical juice for a long dusty time-didn't work.

Walking around, reading, trying to spot the animals was fun.. Catching random things people say was an added bonus too. The giraffe's area was under construction and there was a tractor on one side and this little girl who didn't see the giraffes yet, she was coming the other way where the tractor was and so she was telling her mom, "Look, that's where a tractor lives." It was so cute. Or there was a father with a video camera looking at a bird and he was saying, "He looks so serious.. he looks like my dad."

A lot of the animals stayed toward the back of their habitat. The birds were pretty social as well as the giant anteater, whom made glorious laps around his area like he was giving everyone a good look and enjoying it..

It was a nice way to spend an afternoon. We didn't bother at the snack bars or the gift shop. We just went around to see the animals and it was a good day.

Ah, Sacramento, the Little Zoo that Could.  You have been gradually changing over from your crappy old cellblock enclosures to humane ones, and doing a good job of balancing animal happiness with visitor enjoyment.  Some good primate-going here, notably the lemurs/sifakas, assorted guenons, a very good if smallish chimp habitat, and a deceptive-looking fun gibbon enclosure (note: best zoo in CA to see apes doing complete flips around bars).  Some stunningly gorgeous cats in habitats you generally wish were bigger (omg, could I have watched the baby snow leopard pouncing on its mom all day, though).  There's a lovely red panda exhibit if you're into that sort of thing, and a new reptile house I have very high hopes for (although SPIDERS ARE NOT REPTILES.  WARN A PERSON).

This zoo isn't going to wow anyone with size or variety, but it's well worth the price of admission and should definitely be supported in their efforts.

(Note to Sac Zoo:  PLEASE change the lousy orangutan enclosure.  Please, please, please!)

The Sacramento Zoo is a very fine destination for viewing a modest array of animals, relative to, say, the zoos in San Francisco or San Diego. You'll find a couple of lions, for example, as well as a tiger -- but no bears (oh my!). There's plenty of lemurs, but no hippos. Chimps and oran-gutans? Yep. Gorillas? Nope. Hornbills, emus, and ostrich? Ayup! Penguins? Negative. Suffice to say that you should be able to see everything in a couple of hours.

While the zoo doesn't have a petting area for kids, there is a playground, as well as a small train ride around the park.

Food options are somewhat limited: By my count, there was one cafe that sold burgers, hot dogs, and other grilled and fried fare.  There was also a snack shack. The latter advertised ice cream but didn't sell it; they were out of Coke, too.

All in all, the Sac Zoo is a very fine zoo, nothing to necessarily write home about, but certainly worth a visit if you're hankering to spend part of your days admiring some of your fellow Earthlings, both of the human and non-human variety.

I have taken my daughter to the Sacramento Zoo a few times already (she is 16 months) and we love it. She really likes to see all the animals. While the Zoo is not as big as some of the other Zoos in California it is a very personal Zoo. You can usually see the animals up close; which is nice because young kids don't have the patience to search for very long, and even when there are a lot of people at the zoo there is still plenty to see. I don't like being crowded when I am out with my daughter and there is always someplace to escape to with her!

This zoo is pretty cool and the prices for admission isn't so bad..however it's not exactly worth the drive if you live further than an hour away...unless you really want to see the snow leopard! They are also in the process of building a new Giraffe area...and I also enjoyed the reptile room. I wasn't impressed by the small habitat areas...and there wasn't really any food selections...ohhh the Asian Red Panda...so freaking cute! I wanted to take one home with me. I still like the Oakland zoo the most.

This is an updated review for 'Boo at the Zoo' (every Halloween afternoon / evening at the Sacramento Zoo):

This year the prices went up to $9 per person over the age of 3 ($27 at the gate for the three of us!). This to me is just completely ridiculous. Though they seemed to have a few more things this year (Alien Encounter, Creepy Crawlers Exhibit, etc.) it was still incredibly overpriced and my 9-year old seemed 'over it'.

I think the worst part of the whole thing year was that, in comparison to previous years, the amount of candy the gave out was absurd. You stand in line for 1-5 minutes per 'booth' to be handed a flyer and ONE PIECE OF CANDY. One piece though? $9 bucks and you hand me one piece? Can't even get two? Seriously, what is up with that? The first year we went, they were tossing a handful into your bag. This year? Not so much.

I think this is the last time we'll do this. As much as I love to celebrate Halloween and make sure that my son has a fun, safe Halloween, he's a bit old for this now and I'm bit poor. I'd rather buy him $27 worth of candy.

Next year, it's all about the Haunted Houses. For those of you with youngsters (2-7 years old), I still suggest this.

I enjoyed this zoo. They have a wide array of animal exhibits. My personal favorite are the giraffes .... look kiddies ... this is the REAL toys r us. We're a member off Happy Hollow, so admission is 50% off - great deal.

They have tons of benches, shade, food/drink stands - that makes up for the smell.

I hate zoos and normally I would never step foot in one....unless your boyfriend is majoring in anthropology. So going to the zoo to stare at stinky lathargic chimps was something I had to do with my boyfriend several times. First, they don't give you a discount if you're a student! So all you poor anthropology majors have to fork over 9 dollars each time your professor makes you stare at monkeys. I was so mad over that. Secondly, this place literally and figuratively stinks. Kids become part of the "wild life" here, out of control, screaming and climbing everything. Besides families you occasionally see the old guy that bought himself a fancy little camera with a big ass lens taking pictures of bored to death creatures. I'm almost convinced they're as pathetic and lonely as what they are trying to capture on film. I really loath this place. I partially hate the people that go to the zoo to have "fun" and then I just hate the people that run the zoo for making me pay 9 dollars. Everything about this place is sad. I'm sure the last thing these animals wanted was to be relocated to Sacramento.

This is a small zoo, but definately worth seeing without a doubt.  A good price about $10 to get in, and a $1 more for the cute little train ride.  The train pretty much goes down to the end and back but for a buck, I figured it was a quick 10 minutes and my son thought it was too much fun. my son who is now 2 and half spent a good majority of the time out and walking around, rather than in the stroller I brought.  He was particular enthralled by the flamingos and the birds.  The reptile section was a teeny bit creepy and claustrophobic to him and me too, but that was the only down side.

I thought it would be a rough visit having read the reviews that it was sad and depressing, but heck I come from Vegas, where our zoo is a tiger and few monkeys in someone's backyard.  No, this isn't the San Diego Zoo but we enjoyed the giraffes, tiger, lion, hyena, kangaroo, emu, and the Anteater was by far the neatest animal I ever saw.  Loved the lemurs and how close we could get to them.  You could even call a number from your cell phone and be guided on a little mini safari on the trip.

We took lots of neat pictures and my son enjoyed all the little picture opportunities to stick your head in for the photo-op.  We have a great pic of him looking like spider now.  All in all we spent about 3 hours walking around and would have stayed more if the other adults in our party hadn't gotten tired out.

You'd think they'd at least TRY to make you feel like you're looking at wildlife in its natural habitat. Somehow traffic whizzing by behind a kangaroo just takes away from the feel. Ah, look kids-over there, just past the mercedes benz-a zebra!
A lot of their exhibits are empty, probably because the animals died of boredom.

If you're ever needing some proof to hold off having kids, the zoo is the best place to go.  We went on free museum day so it was super busy as expected.

There are lots of benches where you can sit and watch animals pig out on food and let their kids run wild.  You can also watch the poor zoo animals behind the cages that have to deal with kids screaming at them.  I'm sure the monkeys think it's really funny to have  "eee eee eee" screamed at them all day long.  The saddest part was when a monkey reached out of its cage to wave at the crowd.

My favourite part was when a lion roared and almost everyone in the zoo took off running in the direction of the noise.  It was like a movie set, just with the people running in the reverse direction of an angry lion.

I had some good Mommy/Son bonding at the zoo this past Saturday.
We hadn't been in a couple of years, because the last time we went, he was bored after half an hour. Now that he is 9, he was entertained for two hours. We had a coupon for a free kids admission from the back of Parent magazine, so admission was reasonable.  As previous reviewers mentioned, the food is mediocre in quality and overpriced, so bringing your own might be worthwhile. This zoo has a good amount of shade, and even has some misters running in several areas, so it is tolerable in the summer. We saw the wildlife show, which was second rate, narrated by two teenagers, but the hedgehog was adorable. Also, I never knew that porcupines were so big. The one at Sac Zoo weighs at least 75 pounds.

I really like this zoo.  Now, it is small, which could be a complaint; however, to me it is not because I expect that.  You can see everything in less than two hours.

I love the cats exhibits.  They have a wide variety of cats, which is my favorite thing to see at a zoo really.  They also have small cats, which I have never seen in a zoo before.

I recommend that you go on a weekend because they have a free audio service, which uses your cell phone.  On weekends, why not use those free minutes?

I absolutely loved the China exhibit section.  Those red pandas looked so cute and cuddly, I wanted to take one home with me.  Also, that bird was the prettiest bird I have ever seen in my life.

It was the first time I have ever been able to feel a giraffe.  Kudos for that!

The parrots were a big hit due to their extensive language skills.  Make sure you stop by and chat with them!

We live very close to the zoo and I love to bring my son here.  We like to go early mornings, when there's not a huge crowd.  You could easily see everything in under two hours, but there are also nice picnic areas and a playground - so you could comfortably stretch your visit out.  The staff is very friendly and we enjoy looking at the animals.  If you live close by and have a child, I would strongly recommend looking into an annual pass.

This zoo is just big enough that you're not exhausted when you've seen everything. It's not as big as the SF Zoo but it's not as crowded and very small and intimate. Plus the price of ticket is so cheap it's definitely a good value and you can support your animal friends too! You've seen the entire place in about a1 1/2 hours. They have giraffes, red pandas, hippos, zebras, gorilla, chimps, tigers, and more!

The zoo isn't what I remembered it to be from when I was younger.  But I guess that's how it always is.  This time around, it was very disappointing.  It's so damn hot out during the summer that all the animals hide out in the shade, away from the eager eyes of zoo-goers.

And the penguin exhibit.  Was I the only one who was disappointed?  The ads for the exhibit were so hyped up that I was so excited about going to the zoo to see the penguins.  Maybe I went on a bad day.

This is one of the best zoo's I have ever been to!

The walk around the zoo isn't too long.  There are animals in each habitat.  And entrance fee is cheap! (Adults about $9, kids about $7, and kids under 3 are free).

The only bad thing is parking!  There is no parking lot... just park whereever you can.  I'm surprised that there were no signs that say "no parking" in the residential area.    Also, the rentable strollers were all taken.  Next time, I will bring my own stroller.

My brothers and sisters had a great time and so did my husband and I.  This place is great for kids and adults!

I took Toddler to this zoo on a trip to Sac a couple of weeks ago, and we both really enjoyed it.  This is a really sweet little zoo.  It was nice and clean and, most importantly, REALLY CHEAP!  I paid $8 for myself and my daughter was free.  Not a bad price for a whole afternoon's entertainment.  This is a small zoo, and therefore probably disappointing to those who are expecting a San Diego experience, but perfect for someone with small children.  Kid was perfectly happy to gaze at the flamingos or laugh at the monkeys--the fact that there weren't a ton of huge exhibits didn't bother her at all.  I took other reviewers advice and brought my own snacks--there's a shady little playground with picnic tables if you bring your own food.  All in all a really nice experience.

Okay, so our zoo is a bit in need of a major uplift, but it is very charming otherwise.  It is not a large zoo requiring one to gear up for a full day event, but it is perfect for a 1-2 hour stroll around some cages and lively monkeys when you go at the right time.  To avoid crowds, one might find going during the week to be most satisfactory.  A weekend at the zoo is not peaceful at all, especially with the limited amount of space this park has to offer.

The large animals are quite scarce here... no elephant and no hippo the last time I toured, however, the lion is rather audible which makes for a near death race to the cage just to watch his ferociousness.  The various primate species are abundant and a few years back the babies were seen clinging bravely to their mothers.

Depending what you go to the zoo for, and whether you experience the moments you seek to experience here, will determine your viewpoint of this zoo.

Visited on the 4th of July, and it was pretty busy.  2-year old son enjoyed the monkey's, lemur's and birds.  Penguin exhibit was a little disappointing.  Cafe was not that great, my chicken sandwich was barely edible.  If I was to go again I would pack a picnic and eat in the park.

I guess you can count the snack bar as "food services".  Actually, they have a really good snack bar.  The only other good Zoo snackbar I've been to is in SB.

This zoo is trying, really trying, to be as wonderful for the animals and visitors as possible.  While all zoos make me slightly sad, I understand this one's mission and vision.  They are renovating new sites for animals every year, and replacing old enclosures whenever possible.  Without community support, conscientious small zoos like this one would never be able to provide the kind of care they give, and they persevere even through federal cuts and low interest seasons.

Alright, this Zoo is in the midst of an overhaul, and I'll have to say, it's about damn time that the polar bears are gone.  Hopefully they've gone to someplace a lot cooler than Sacramento.
I like this zoo because I can do a couple of laps with friend's kids and get the heck out of there within 2 hours time.  The flamingos are always a hit with the kiddies (and me) and the baby tigers are ridiculously adorable.

I can't give this place more than 3 stars, and should probably give it 2.  The exhibits are really small and look very, very old.  A lot of exhibits took the day off for whatever reason. They have the usual lion, tigers and zebras, etc. which was good....but nothing really special other than a traveling penguins exhibit that was so underwhelming and small.  I actually felt sorry for those penguins.

Compared to other zoos I've been to, ours needs a lot of money and TLC.  The facilities just seem so inadequate, other than the new veterinary hospital.

On a positive though. I did think $8.50 was a reasonable price to spend 1 1/2 to 2 hours seeing a few animals. The gifts shop was pretty cool with lots of neat things.  I took other Yelper's advice and didn't buy any food so I can't comment on that.

I know it takes a lot of money (and land) to have a zoo on par with San Diego, or even SF.  I hope in the near future a big fund raiser can happen  (similar to what is happening with the Crocker) so we can have a great zoo to go to.  Unfortunately, given the location of the zoo, they don't see to have too much room to expand, unless Fairytale Town gets the wrecking ball taken to it.

OVERALL:  Our zoo is still getting a makeover from being one of those yucky, concrete 50's jail-like zoos. I believe this transition is well under way and there are several innovative, more natural habitat exhibits. Some of our family's favorites include the ring-tailed lemur exhibit and the giant anteater exhibit. Ultimately, what will set our zoo apart from many others in the future is the Murray E. Fowler Veterinary Hospital, which will be a cutting-edge training ground for exotic animal veterinarians. Dr. Fowler established the first zoo medicine program in the world at nearby UC Davis.

BEST TIME TO GO: Early, before noon.

AMENITIES:
  1) FOOD -- As previously stated, don't come for the food. Really. You have been warned! We bring our own healthier snacks and occasionally treat our toddlers to a soft-serve ice cream at the Zebra Snack Bar. Plus, if you have little ones, maybe the lure of getting tastier food elseware might just be perfect leverage you need to get your crankypants to leave after s/he's reached their saturation point.
  2) BATHROOMS -- adequate, usually clean, have changing stations.
  3) OPEN PLAY AREAS -- good for burning off toddler energy. Be aware of "owie" prone places like the concrete snake tower/thingy. It's a toddler magnet and I guess at one point was supposed to be a slide(?)
  4) THE "TRAIN" -- A dressed-up electric vehicle with attached open window "railcars". Cute. Most of the kids I have observed at the zoo, including my toddlers, are attracted this feature -- but it costs extra. In the long-run I worry that an excited little one is going to break away and get mowed down by it. Keep your eye on it and your kids as it drives by.

EDUCATIONAL:
  1) Teach kids to respect nature and living things: It would seem that most of the animals here are endangered or threatened with extinction.   Here is the perfect opportunity to teach kids about the impacts of human activity on the planet.
  2) Teach kids the value of resources: Please reinforce your kids' efforts to recycle appropriately here so that it will become second-nature to them. Kudos to the zoo's "Green Team" for their conservation efforts, such as recycling and solar power.

OTHER GREAT STUFF NEARBY: We like the proximity of our zoo to the other amenities and features of William Land Park, such as Fairytale Town, Funderland, the often over-looked but quite wonderful Rock Garden, the fenced-in playground and wading pool north of the zoo and the park itself.

I agree with Amy P. -- get a membership and help our zoo in its endeavors to, in the zoo's own words, "inspire appreciation, understanding and respect for all living things through stimulating education, wholesome recreation and innovative species management".

** Update/note 7.1.07: Even though this is located in a nice neighborhood, don't be foolish. Hide your valuables and lock your car. Today we heard the sound of a window smashing while we were at Fairytale Town and a quick-thinking man with a stacked SLR camera jumped up on some play equipment and got a picture of someone breaking into an SUV with a hammer on the other side of the fence. Don't know who ultimately got the last laugh. (End update). **

Normally I can ignore the fact that zoos are basically animal prisons but not at this particular zoo. The cages seem small and not well furnished (if you put plants in a cage, is that furnished? decorated?). And in the summer it's so damn hot out that the animals seem miserable and listless. Free parking though and I do like being able to look in at the animal hospital area, but overall it's a really depressing place.

I went with my kids and sister on a Sunday.  Parking was not that great- just street parking (like another review mentions).

The park, although small, had a good selection of typical zoo animals (giraffe, zebra, kangaroo).  The price was okay because I have a membership at San Francisco Zoo, whose reciprocal program let me get entrance at half off.  Part of the children's play area was in disrepair (a climbing spider web made from rope that was half unraveled) and the slide was over run by children who where way too big, whizzing past little kids and toppling them over.  Truth be told, the kids didn't seem to mind.  But, as a parent, I cringed at every near accident.

All in all, it was okay for being half price, and super little kids would like it.  And older, more sophisticated child might get bored in which case I'd say take the extra trip and go to the San Francisco Zoo.  Or, make it a real adventure and add the Fairytaleland Park next door to your trip for an extra few dollars and spend the whole day having fun.

I really like this zoo! The exhibits are fun and it's great for children to observe and play as well. I like the handson activities throughout the park. It's a fun place to go see animals and let children have fun!

I'm not exactly what people are referring to when they complain about the poor housing exhibits because I thought they were amazing.  The screaming monkey was a crack up, the antelopes and other animals were well shaded, relaxing and in plain sight.  There were tons of lush trees and climbing limbs for those animals which like to climb.  It's small enough that if you brought your two and three year old, they could manage to walk the entire zoo and then go home and promptly pass out.  I had a great time and it's well worth a visit.
