Review from Bob C.

I just attended a matinee of STC's A Christmas Carol. Michael Luan (director) has done it again! I have gone to ACT's version of the Christmas Carol that they produce in the Curran theatre every years and STC's blows them away hands down.
Matt Miller's performance as Scrooge is sheer genius. STC is a world class theatre company that can compete with any professional company anywhere in the world.
I was a bit worried when I found out that STC was introducing a good deal of music into the play. It was wonderful and brilliantly executed! The music fit perfectly and was performed wonderfully by expert musicians.
I have seen theatrical productions in New York, on Broadway, in London, and throughout the United States. I have absolutely no affiliation with STC other than now being a loyal fan!
This is my fifth play and they just keep getting better and better. While Matt Miller's role really stands out due to the nature of the role, please note that there wasn't a single weak player in a very large cast! Everyone single actor or actress did a magnificent job and the real brilliance of the performance was the expertise of the ensemble.
Get to see a Christmas Carol if you can, if you can't see at least one of tSTC's wonderful upcoming plays...
There is wonderful theatre right here in "river city"!2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Sacramento Theater Company (STC) is an excellent company with amazing stages and terrific performances. They have a very nice, very large complex (The Wells Fargo Pavilion). STC also provides classes to those that wish to become actors. For the youngest group, they have "Ensemble Classes for Kids & Teens" (http://www.sactheatre....). I take part in "STC-2 Young Professional Company," (http://www.sactheatre....) where we take classes (Masters, Intermediate, and Advanced) and perform mainly on Stage 2.

Saw the preview of Frankenstein last night. Not very good. Lead actor OVER dramatized the Dr. role and the Frankenstein role was played in vein of someone with an injured foot yelling every line! Pretty bad.............

Sacramento Theatre Company is currently one of only 3 equity theatre houses in Sacramento. (Along with B-Street and the Delta King).
The Theatre was remodled recently and it looks gorgeous, the interior, the grounds all got a facelift and look modern, without being too flashy.
STC is a staple of Sacramento Theatre.
Inside the main theatre, the seats are new and clean, and the space seems filled with promise.... inside the "stage 2" space, the archictecture changes dramatically for each show.
Each season truly feels like a hit-or miss kinda thing.
Some great shows of the past five years: Cinderella (which was possibly their biggest hit yet), Christmas Carol, Convenience (by a local playwright!), and Insides Out! and Arranged Marriage, which were both developed from a thesis pieces by a UCD Grad students.
The acting quality is high, and consistent, as is the sets, lights and sound.
What is NOT consistent however, unfortunately is the choice in plays. Occasionallly there is a horrifically bad play (like the experimental theatre based "little prince" a few years ago instead of A Christmas Carol). One season I may look at the program and be excited for the whole season, or I might only be interested in a show or two.
If you're looking for typical, standard theatre fare, I'd suggest looking at their mainstage season, which is filled with the requisite British and American Drama/comedies.
If you're looking for something just a tad bit edgier, maybe a little off the beaten path (but not too far, don't worry) then check out some of the shows going on in Stage 2. (Stage 2 is where a lot of "One-Man" shows go on)
They still have student/senior/group discounts available, so comming to see a professional show won't completely rape your wallet.
Parking is a royal biatch in the few blocks surrounding the theatre, and they don't validate for the parking garage across the street.
But the theatre, of course, is haunted.
And you can't really beat that.Listed in: Oh, the places to Go....

I came here to watch the Cinderella musical.. absolutely great for all ages! My sister and I sat somewhere in the first few rows.. and I loved it. I think it's funny that Cinderella's step sisters and step mother are played by men.. which made it funny. I watched the musical back at the end of 2008 but they did bring it back at the end of 2009. It is definitely worth it.. I'm not sure if they bring it back every year though. The theatre is pretty small but still a great theatre. I really wanted to go watch "Noises Off" but didn't find the time too, hopefully they bring it back.
