These ain't your momma's porkchops. Or a lame version of arroz con gandules. This place is not some bastardized version of authentic borinquen flavor. It's the real deal. You know there's plenty of Goya back there, not some imitation!

My boyfriend and I were on the prowl for some good, authentic Puerto Rican fare, and not the fancy kind they dish out at Coco. The kind your mom would have ready for dinner when you got home from school if your mom were a badass Puerto Rican lady.

Enter Sabor Latino.

Say what you will, but what they do, they do well. You'd have to have a screw or ten loose to come in here expecting a fine dining experience. Is there a sommelier on staff? Can I see the wine cellar? The tines on my fork don't appear to be even! Give. Me. A. Break. If you take one look at Sabor Latino from the corner, you can tell it's going to be authentic, delicious, greasy and likely packed in a styrofoam container. Check your pretension at the door.

The relleno de papa was so ridiculously good I was half tempted to order 6 to go for a bed time snack. What is a relleno de papa? Let's pretend it is an atom. The nucleus of said atom is savory meat. And the electrons padding the nucleus are mounds of heavenly, dense mashed potatoes. And then it's FRIED. Your life has absolutely no meaning if you have yet to try one.

I ordered the chuleta frita, which was always my favorite when I'd eat at my friend's house (whose mom happens to be one of those aforementioned badass Puerto Rican women) and my gentleman friend opted to throw down on the pollo guisado, both accompanied by arroz con gandules.

HOT. DAMN.

The portions are HUGE! The food was amazing, and still just as good, if not better, as a leftover lunch today. Is it wrong that I want to go back for dinner tonight? And again tomorrow?

Sure, the tables are coated in clear vinyl. And maybe the person who's taking your order isn't to big on the whole let's-speak-English thing, but don't let that limit you. Even for those reluctant to venture west of Western, this is a place you have to visit at least once to round out your Chicago experience - an authentic taste of one of the many cultural flavors that make this city worth living in, despite our crappy meter boxes.

This is the best, and most emphatically the freshest, cocina Boricua that I've had hace mucho tiempo.  And Jesus Christ do they give you a lot of food.  We ate until our bellies were full to bursting, and we still doggy-bagged enough food to fill us up for breakfast and lunch tomorrow.

Dirty but authentic. You have to ask for plates (Styrofoam) and ask for lots of other givens, but the food is pretty good. The rice was great, filled with plenty of peas and ham. The fried pork Jibarito sandwich (on a fried plantain) was definitely good, however it needed some kind of sauce/dressing besides hot sauce. Some of the appetizers were good as well (banana dumpling) while others (fried cod) were mediocre at best...

If you're not only looking for authentic Puerto Rican food but also a culture-shock, Sabor Latino has it.  You may be the only mono-lingual person in there and confused by the blasting Salsa/Merengue/Reggaeton music coming from the speakers.  You also may have to take action to the laid back environment by grabbing your own menu and sitting at any table that may still need to be cleaned up.

The menu has a good selection.  I always love the Relleno de papa, which you see under a heatlamp at the front of the storefront.  They also have THE BEST JIBARITO sandwich I've ever had!  A jibaro is a meat sandwich with cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo and tostones (smashed plantains) instead of bread.  They add some garlic butter to the tostones that give it an amazing flavor!

Again, come here for the food, not the service.  It may also be packed so go during off hours!!

Sucks.

they are rude and charge tax.  What self respecting Puerto Rican spot charges tax?

My pastello cost $1.08??? WTF  (it's not the 8 cents that bothers me its the 92 that I get back)

Holy crap, what a find!

Incredible Carnitas Fritos (pork ribs deep fried, skin on) and Pincho (pork skewers with onions). I love pork so very, very much - so yummy! So perfectly cooked!

Man - I will SO BE BACK at this place in the future - maybe tomorrow!

The service can be slow, depending on who is working. Order some coffee or a pastellilo and suck it up, because the Jibaritos (a steak sandwich with fried plantains instead of bread) are huge, cheap, and delicious. Make sure you get them with the side order of arroz y gandules studded with roasted pork- it'll be more food than you can eat, but that's part of the experience.

Good and cheap Puerto Rican food.  Service is a little slow.  This place is the only place I would order morsilla from.  The food is good other than the old bread they give you.  Check the place out... again, good and cheap.

food is delicious..JIBARITOS are the shizzle..steak, or pork..potatoe balls  are good..and if your in a rush, the pork on a stick is good too...i would give 4 stars, but like everyone says..come for the food not the service..i live around the corner so i usually call my order in an hour ahead..they will tell you, your food will be ready in 15 minutes..but don't show up in 15..give it 45 to an hour..i've ordered many a times, and have finally got the timing translation down..also, good luck with them understanding your order if u dont speak spanish..i always seem to get the "why the hell can't you speak spanish" tone, or attitude when i'm there(man, i'm filipino..ok, that's pretty much spanish decent too, but you don't have to look down on me cause I can't speak spanish!)...not too many puerto rican spots where i'm from in SOCAL, so this was my first experience with   puerto rican food..and i love it!..and the lady at the front..sometimes she's havin' a good day, and sometimes she's not...so catch her on a good day, or you will get the pissy vibe..i guess it could be the crackheads that come in and ask for the pork on a stick with extra, extra barbecue sauce on it...and then he goes chasin' down his bus! i will be ordering again..just gotta make sure to stop at walgreen's for about half an hour
when she say's "15 minutes"
