Excellent smoked fish at Sables.  I love the sable, smoked salmon, and the sturgeon.  The lobster salad is very pricey, but it is also amazing.  I have tried it all and it is all good.  Very accomodating staff that is liberal with the samples.  Small storefront that jams everything you can think of for a great brunch/breakfast spread.  I just wish they were open earlier on the weekdays.

Get your Essa bagel from downtown and pick up your fish here.  Go to Pick A Bagel if you have to but oy H&H?  Sorry I have an opinion on bagels.

For fish this is the spot!

Pound of Lobster salad please.  Sir would you like to try a slice of Scottish salmon?  OK.  Yum.  Pound of whitefish salad please.  Sir would you like to try a taste of shrimp salad? It is an addiction.
Before now it was a Sunday morning memory.
They're nice, everything I have tried is absolutely wonderful. I think I have a thing for "hole in the walls" with quality. Much better than Zabar's even if more expensive. they are nicer (did I mention this already), fresher, no over-powering mixed foods smell (UGH), and offer samples. I would consider moving to the UES if I could afford to go here every day (but then maybe I'd get sick of it.. hmmm. NO!)

the smoked fish is  fantastic, and when they are getting your order together, they give you a taste - you can walk out feeling like you've had a whole meal, the lobster salad is the best ever, the owner used to run the appetizing counter at Zabar's and he knows his stuff. I just love the smoked salmon, actually I love all the fish. It is tiny, and you have to order ahead for special holidays, but they pack more into the space than you can imagine.
I just hope it stays open forever.

lobster salad- yum, caviar-yum, sturgeon-yum, blinis-yum

Me like it a lot!

Small but packs a wallop for this type of food.  I will give them a five star review, if they put my picture on the wall.

For the best sable and nova and other delicacies, this is a cut above Zabar's or Agata's and even if you pay more, you can really taste the difference.

One of the guys who started it used to work at Zabar's, in fact.

Excellent service...and they always recommend new things.
Meeting people here when shopping is fun, too.

Thank goodness the ambiance is terrible or this place would have lines outside.  The eat-in sandwiches are top-notch.  I prefer the corned beef; the pastrami is of high quality too.  Countermen are so friendly.  They always offer a taste of a delicacy.  Try the lobster salad, which is outstanding.  Pricing for the sandwiches is totally reasonable given the absurd prices at a Carnegie Deli, Katz's, or the nearby Pastrami Queen.
