Get ready to smell like CHHEEEEEEEESE~! mm~*
I walked into this little hole in the wall mac&cheese place, stayed long enough to get a menu to order take out from later, and walked out already smelling like cheese. *wow* that stuff is POTENT!
I work nights, so I'm always looking for good places to order from that deliver to the UWS. They have a sister place, Pinch&SMAC where I orderd my four cheese mac&cheese from, and it was DELICIOUS!
Just a bit heavy on the oil, so its a dish my insides will only allow me to have once in a blue moon, but I look forward to getting SMACed again soon. ;)
Not good. When you're going to try to compete with my macaroni and cheese, you better bring it and this macaroni and cheese joint definitely does not. They try to "woo" you with gourmet macaroni and cheeses like a "Cajun style" filled with cheap tasting pieces andouille sausage and chicken or "Japanese style" with wasabi.
Both concoctions should be considered macaroni and cheese blasphemy.
Message to S' Mac, if you want to take yourself seriously when making one of my favorite comfort foods, you better make sure you have a quality product. Fusion macaroni and cheese just doesn't cut it with just creative marketing titles.
12 different kinds of mac n' cheese... you can build your own too.
we got the masala (blend of indian spices). nice set of spices going on in there. very cheesy and delicious.
i wanted to try others but had crif dogs and pomme frites still needing to be eaten. we felt bad bringing in other foods while just ordering one item here so we ate everything on the streets... SO GOOD!
I love mac n cheese and therefore love the concept of this place. It's kind of hit or miss on their specialty macs. The 4 cheese is good while the mac and beef and masala is just okay. The wow factor is missing and even though they serve them in piping hot cast iron skillets, twice now they have served them cold in the middle- need to adjust their cooking/heating times!
I've never had so much cheese in my mac 'n' cheese. I can almost feel my arteries clogging as I write this. But, damn, it's good comfort food--had the "cheeseburger" (with an American and cheddar mix; as if there wasn't enough cheese already) with breadcrumbs (nosh size). Cute iron skillets. Had a Blue Point beer to (hopefully/vainly wish) thin all the fat in my system. Yeah, right.
Macaroni & cheese is a little like John C. Reilly--great supporting player, but you don't really want to see it as the star of the whole affair. With that in mind, I couldn't help feeling as though S'mac was the eatery equivalent of "Walk Hard," John C. Reilly's failed comedy vehicle. Sure, there were some good parts (the buffalo chicken was nice and tender), but overall you kind of wish Will Ferrel (for the sake of the metaphor, some fried chicken) would show up to carry the thing.
I instantly became a fan of this place when I dipped my fork into EACH of the three nosh sizes my friends got and couldn't decide which one I liked more!
We got Garden Lite - no Yelpers seem to have mentioned this one yet, but it's great - Mediterranean, and Alpine. Garden Light included mushrooms and other veggies - and low fat cheese. (It surely doesn't taste like low fat cheese. You won't be missing any flavor.) Alpine and Mediterranean have gotten a lot of love on Yelp, so I won't go into those.
I love the feel of the place - bright orange! - and the concept of the restaurant. A nosh size is definitely adequate, of the stomach, but, truthfully, I just wanted to eat more and more because they all tasted so good.
I came around 5pm, and all the tables were taken. It sounds like peak hours have ruined others' experiences, so, as not to taint my perception, I plan on returning soon, but definitely non-peak. Maybe next time I'll even be daring enough to make my own combination....
This is great mac and cheese! I had the Buffalo Chicken and my friend had the Parisienne. F'in A DELICIOUS. I hated that the seating was similar to a Boston Market or Fazzoli's (remember that? wow. italian fast food, Central Florida style). Fighting for a table sucked, but the girls at the counter are cutie patooties and super sweet.
Go there now.
God listened to my prayers and created a restaurant JUST FOR ME. I love^infinity Mac N Cheese. This place has about ten different types and you can also customize your own. I tried the 4 cheese, parisienne,
cheeseburger, and napoletana. My favorite was the 4 cheese...you can't go wrong with 4 cheeses! But this one is only for true cheese lovers. If cheese overwhelms you, I'd go with the napoletana -- much lighter.
The cheeseburger tastes like Hamburger Helper, but I like Hamburger Helper, so I'm not complaining. The Parisienne is a unique twist on Mac N cheese -- brie, figs and mushrooms! Definitely worth a try, but I wouldn't want too much of it. If I could do it again, I would share the sampler with several friends.
I don't remember who told me about this place or how I came across it but once I did I knew I was in heaven. Macaroni & Cheese is pretty much my favorite food and the fact that there's a place (albeit 3000 miles away from me in NYC) dedicated to it excited me.
Lucky for me I go to NYC at least once a year so this last time that I went I made it a point to eat here. The place itself is very small and luckily my family and I came when it wasn't a prime eating time. The menu has a great variety of macs you can choose from and if none of those appeal to you, you are free to make it however way you want it and it also comes in a variety of sizes Nosh, Major Munch (which is what I got), Mongo, and Partay! If you still can't decide on just one they offer a sampler of some of their popular macs (insert me being like a kid in the candy store).
My brother and I ordered the La Mancha which is mac cooked in Manchego cheese, grated onions and fennel (i LOVE fennel) and my parents shared a Masala. Bread crumbs are optional and at no extra charge. It was seriously hands down some of the best macaroni & cheese I've ever had and I've eaten a lot of mac and a lot of different places. Every bite was tasty and creamy and with the fennel it just made it unbelievable. Even my parents' Masala was good -- super flavorful. The only downside was I was unable to finish the whole thing (sad I know) I think opting for the Nosh size would've sufficed.
But the bottom line is I fell in love with the place and I plan to make S'Mac a part of my routine on future trips to NYC for sure.
I
I like macaroni & cheese... A LOT... I was meandering over to Angelica's Kitchen just up the street when I stumbled upon S'mac. It's amazing how quickly you can go to wanting to eat light and healthy to not caring if you are about to inhale a weeks worth of cholesterol and food coma. But it was worth it. So worth it that I came back three times in a week.
I eat strictly major munch sized skillets. I had the Parisienne first (figs, mushrooms, brie, & rosemary) which is good, but halfway through the fig novelty wears off and becomes a bit overwhelming. I recommend ordering it without figs which I did the second time and was glad I did.
The La Mancha (manchego, fennel, & onions) is also very tasty and is a nice combination none of which seemed overbearing.
I prefer my macaroni & cheese without bread crumbs, but I do expect that it will be nice, crispy and brown on top. When I ordered take-out (for later since I had just sat down there) it wasn't crispy and it didn't taste as good.
They have a separate store-front next door just for orders and take-out, which is genius since the sit-down location is often crowded enough without the extra chaos of deliveries. This is a great spot if you have no regard for your arteries and are looking for something that will get you ready for a nap.

The restaurant: It's extremely orange, very small and comfortable. The chairs are surprisingly comfortable. Since you order at the counter, there isn't much to be said for service - except that they're always very efficient, and there's never a long wait for the food. It's very casual here.
The food: If you love mac and cheese, you'll like this place. This isn't your gourmet mac and cheese, either: it's homey, rustic, hearty. The breadcrumbs add some very nice texture, and the cheese is gooey. Most of the items on the menu are very good, but I tend to revisit the classic All-American.
Getting the nosh (the smallest size) will be more than enough. It's very tasty and unpretentious mac and cheese. If you don't like mac and cheese, then don't bother coming here. There's nothing on the menu for you.
Final verdict? I go out of my way to visit this place, often. I'm a repeat customer, and I always bring new friends with me here.
I went here Monday evening, to bring to work... I had 2 dishes the All-American, and the Masala. The All-American was good , the Masala was flavorful , with it's seasons. I would go back to get for a quick bite to eat since I work in that area..... Its price friendly too....
Yummmmy.
Not only does this place exclusively make Macaroni and Cheese, but it makes a variety of said Macaroni and Cheese dishes.
Why anyone (who is not vegan and not lactose intolerant) wouldn't go is beyond me.
Go, it's good.
S'mac, you let me down. Maybe I had unrealistically high expectations... thinking this mac and cheese would be on par with, say, the m&c at Bar @ Etats-Unis, only with more options. But it wasn't.
I should start from the beginning. L and I queue up to order. It's early, not at all crowded. L orders her Manchego, buffalo sauce, and broccoli m&c, and gets her ticket. Then I order my whole wheat pasta, goat cheese, tomato, and broccoli m&c, and upon hearing my order, L immediately asks the girl behind the counter if she can get hers with whole wheat pasta, too -- she forgot. (Just so you know, dear L was working with the tail end of a 30-hour headache, and despite being a bit foggy, she was as sweet and polite as ever.)
"Nope, too late," says counter girl.
"But..."
"He already made it."
"But I just ordered it a few seconds ago! And look, he's right there!"
We can see the two m&c makers a few feet behind the counter, and they haven't even started on our orders.
"Sorry. It's already in the computer."
"Could you maybe just turn around and ask him, then? Please?"
The men are a stone's throw away.
"Nope." She doesn't even glance back.
Ok, then. We grab a table, which is still a bit, uh, sticky, from the previous diners, and I load up on napkins.
When the m&c's come to the table, we're not quite sure which is which.
"Did you get mushroom?" I ask L. "This one has mushrooms." I don't like mushrooms.
"No," says L. But we each taste both m&c's and clearly mine has goat cheese, hers, Manchego and spicy sauce. Aight. Then I hit upon some cauliflower. What the...? And wait... is my pasta really whole grain? Sure doesn't taste like it.
Now, don't get me wrong. It's macaroni. And it's cheese. And there are vegetables tossed in (albeit, not the one I asked for). So this isn't exactly traumatic. But it's not what I had ordered, and neither L's nor mine is anything to write home about. They're cheesey. They're hot. But there's something lacking... maybe it's the quality of the ingredients, maybe it's the lack of love. Maybe they just ran out of fairy dust to sprinkle on our orders.
We both come pretty damn close to finishing our nosh-sized pans o' cheesiness, anyway. (Incidentally, I think this size is perfect for one person for a meal -- not too much, not too little.)
And that's that.
I'm tempted to offer up some suggestions to the powers-that-be at S'mac... like, have someone who gives the tables a cursory clean between diners, better quality pasta, friendlier service, better quality cheese, maybe even a soy cheese option, so that vegans can come here too.
Just thoughts... just thoughts...
S'Mac serves the best Mac and Cheese in the world! I am obsessed with this place and I used to go at least once a week when I lived in the village. Cheeseburger is my favorite and it never disappoints me.
To choose the best food I've eaten in my life, S'Mac is definitely one of the top fives.
When I first heard about S'Mac, I was jealous. An American favorite, macaroni and cheese, probably done to perfection at this small E. Village eatery would normally not be an option for me. BUT (!) upon inspection of their menu, I discovered that all of their amazing concoctions can be tailored to be gluten-free - right down to the breadcrumbs on top.
After this epiphony, I knew it wouldn't be long before I made a trip to this orange haven on 12th Street.
When I arrived, I opted for the 4 Cheese - simple and classic. It was good... really good. Extra stars for taking into consideration their gluten-free New Yorkers. Truth be told, I'd have given them 5 stars on taste alone.
I'll be back. Well done, S'Mac.
Small space, orange and yellow lighting for fun effect. Mac and Cheese is solid. The highlight is the focus of only having Mac and Cheese on the menu and the fun variety and customizable dishes. Probably a place to stop by late after taking in a few drinks. Mac and Cheese!
This mac n' cheese is better than Mom makes. Can be a challenge to find a table during normal eating hours. It's worth it to wait it out. I always take out of town guests here and all of them have raved. It's the perfect New York-y place that doesn't hurt your wallet.
You know a place is amazing when for 2 hours beforehand all your group can talk about is eating mac n cheese, and the first 20 minutes of the meal the table is ringing with groans, purrs, and smiles of pure elation.
We went there on a Saturday night, my friend and I split the sampler platter (8 small portions of various ones), and each got our own nosh-sized; I ordered the cajun nosh, with sausage and pepper jack and peppers. O. M. G. If heaven had a caterer, I'm pretty sure S'MAC is top 3 on the list. SUCH GOOD FOOD!!! The sampler platter was great, able to get a taste of all the different ones; the Parisienne one is out of control, so freaking good - slightly concerned about eating an entire cast-iron skillet of brie, figs, and and macaroni, but whatever, out of the water. Even the original mac n cheese was delicious.
Why only 4 stars? I save 5 stars for places that have everything perfect, literally everything; tables were a little messy, space is way too small to fit all the mac n cheese fans in nyc, and after 30 minutes the mac n cheese turns cold, which is unavoidable (or is it?!?). I personally like mac n cheese when its gooey and thick, and S'MAC's is a little on the thinner side, which is still by far some of the best mac n cheese i've had, but one step from perfection. Otherwise, this place is a return, go-to, favorite, mecca for this cheese junky.
+5 stars for quality of food. -3 stars for not being able to take phone orders. This review is about service of the takeout store. See other reviews for quality of food.
Copying my email to sarita@smacnyc.com below,
Do you still support orders over the phone?
I don't have internet on my phone so I can't use your online ordering system but I would like to order in advance.
However, I have had trouble doing this the last four or five nights I've called. I'm put on hold for long periods or disconnected.
Tonight I could not order at all! I called at 10pm and asked to place an order for take out. I was put on hold then disconnected.
I called back four times and nobody picked up. On the fifth try someone picked up and put me on hold for over a minute. I hung up and called Westville East who redirected me in one second, took my order in 30, including listing my options for side orders, AND called me five minutes later to say it was ready.
Every other restaurant I've called for takeout is able to handle food orders by phone within 30 seconds of my call. It's my expectation you should be able to do the same.
What is the problem?
The girl who runs the takeout is not professional and too casual about taking or filling orders. Even after I have ordered and my food is ready I often end up waiting to pay.
You may not care. But FYI you're losing business. You may have a separate shop that specializes in takeout but it's not servicing all orders.
Dear Richard Chicken,
While sallying upon 1st Avenue I stumbled upon a graffito of yours of a chicken that was ejaculating blood out of its neck phallus. Needless to say, I was revolted. Yet your grotesque cartoon did not deter me from my desire to eat some tasty chicken sans jizz.
I happened upon the right place. For a few dollars and a few minutes of your time, the fellows at 'smac will make you happy with their macaroni and cheese and even sate one's desire for buffalo chicken.
As someone who never really liked the Kraft mac & cheese, I was most definitely skeptical about this place. However, these days, I'd like to think of myself as an appreciator of different kinds of cheese, and this place is great for that. It's so unimaginably superior to that garbage anyway.
I've been there a handful of times and still haven't tried all the combinations of cheese, veggies and meat (yes, there are plenty of filling options for the carnivores out there) I want to. My favorite is the Cajun, and my fellow diners always seem interested in "sharing" some of it.
I do have two quibbles with the place. First, there's not nearly enough seating. I seem to always find myself waiting and finally squeezing into an uncomfortable space with my group. It's a bummer. Also -- and this may be more of an individual thing -- I feel like there should be a better middle ground between the un-filling Nosh and the somewhat excessive Major Munch.
Anyway, this place is definitely worth a few visits, since there should be a few styles you'll want to try. It's even better on a cold day...
If you are really craving mac n' cheese (say, after you move and are in the midst of unpacking), I would say this place isn't that bad. I ordered the Alpine in the Major size (medium size). This could probably feed 2 people, but I ate the whole thing in one sitting. Overall, it hit the spot for what I was craving, but I can say that my roommate makes better mac n cheese. I would certainly go back the next time I had a mac n cheese craving.
For 2 macs n cheese (one with multi-grain pasta) and a soda, it came to about $26.00. I think the medium sizes run at about $10-$11 each.
If your going to do a strict macaroni & cheese joint it better be serious mac n' chez. First you choose the 'nosh' size skillet, because the 'major munch', is a monster.
At S'Mac your mac n' chez is served to you in a skillet out of the oven. Next, go with one of the menu options for style, I chose the buffalo chicken just because I thought it was the least traditional one with very traditional pieces. It had Cheddar & American chez, boneless chicken + buffalo sauce. My brother had the Alpine, that comes with gruyere + a slab of bacon. IMPORTANT!! Get bread crumbs baked on top, I don't understand how you could turn down bread crumbs on mac n' chez.
Take your number & wait, there was a sign outside saying, "Now Serving Beer & Wine." Their options are really nice, with what I ordered a local Maine white beer. It takes about 5-7 minutes to bake and the hot skillets arrive to your table. Now time to dig in.
The cheese blend on mine really cooled down the heat from the buffalo sauce it was well balanced with a bit of pepper to boot. I really enjoyed the taste, the visions of the mac drowning in oil will always be in my memories. But it was mostly because if the chicken in my option because my brother's skillet wasn't as greasy.
All around this is a spot for mac 'n chez enthusiest to join and feast on the boundaries of insane and test thier skills making thier own signature skillets mixed with...hot dog, tuna, broccoli, shiitake mushrooms, figs, and a wide variety of chez...american, blue, brie, cheddar, mozzarella, goat, gruyere, manchego, muenster, parmesan, pecorino, pepper jack & swiss.
Not a place if you're in a hurry. Enjoy.
Really excellent mac and cheese. Great little restaurant on a cute street. Friendly service. Great vibe. We got the masala mac and the cajun mac and both were super tasty. I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 because the amount of fat and calories that were in that meal have to be accounted for in some way...seriously that dish was SWIMMING in cheesy goo and grease...
But nonetheless, everyone should try it once. Great little find.
This place could be good if they hired some competent employees. Sometimes it is just so gross. Once I even got a frozen plate of mac. Hire some non-idiots please. And lower your prices, its noodles
Their four cheese mac and cheese is amazing. I think I could eat it every day. (Except I'd probably get scurvy if I did.) This place is great for take-out; eating in, not so much. There isn't much space and it can get really busy at times. Still, I love love love this place.
My 100th review just HAD to be S'Mac.
This is, without a doubt, the best restaurant in New York City. Hell, it might be the best restaurant in the country. It's definitely in the discussion. What an amazing restaurant.
For context, I love mac and cheese. It's really a top-notch food. In addition, I love mixing crap into my mac and cheese: bacon, tater tots, little smokies, you name it. So when I found out about S'Mac I knew instantly I had to go.
Let me put it this way: during a one week trip to NYC last fall, I ate at S'Mac 3 times. They had so much I wanted to try.
Trip 1: I ordered the Regular (gotta have a basis for comparison) and the Cheeseburger (ground beef mixed in). I ordered both in the smallest size (see pics). I give the Regular a B+ (it was the worst one I had in all my trips). The Cheeseburger gets a solid A. It's not that the Regular was bad - far from it - it's just that compared to all of the other ones it just feels flat.
Trip 2: I got two smalls again. This time, I ordered the Four Cheese which, as you might guess, has four different cheeses. I give it an A-. It was very tasty, but again, would've been better with stuff mixed in. I also ordered the Alpine, which is gruyere cheese and slab bacon. This gets an A+, easily. Just a flat-out amazing dish. The cheese is a perfect compliment to the bacon. Alpine, have my babies.
Trip 3: I didn't originally plan on going a 3rd time, but found myself hungry late in the evening and had been intrigued by a seasonal special I noticed on my previous two trips: Turkey Mac. They were celebrating Thanksgiving by offering a mac and cheese with turkey mixed in and croutons instead of bread crumbs on top. It also came with sides of gravy and cranberries, which was a nice touch. Too bad it's only a seasonal special, because it was quite good. Solid A.
I seriously can't recommend this place enough. If I lived in NYC, I'd be here all the time. GREAT restaurant.
Ok first of all you have to love mac n cheese or why else would you even head over to East Village?!? There were 6 of us and we ordered 4 of the SMALL servings and it was more than enough... (of course 4 of us had just finished dinner at RueB but I digress). We ordered the Buffalo which was awesome especially if you like hot wings. The Masala was so good and totally unexpected but the creme de la creme was the 2 orders of the Cajun! Woo Hoo. Just spicy enough to keep you coming back for more.
If you don't know, NOW you know...
So my friend recommended S'Mac. My friend and I took 2 different subways and walked a few blocks out of the way to try it. So worth it! The place is tiny and people were filing in and out. We grabbed a window seat so we could experience the deliciousness and people watch at the same time. I had the Buffalo Chicken and she had the All American. they were both fantastic. We ordered the Nosh size and we both had plenty left over. They also serve Diet Dr. Pepper and Cream Soda which we were both stoked on. If you're in NYC and especially cruising around the East Village check it out.
Buffalo Chicken...my favorite.
Um. The Alpine (with bacon and Gruyere cheese) is phenomenal! 'Nuff said.
Mac and cheese...everyone that knows me knows this is my all time favorite comfort food and we knew we HAD to stop by when we saw this spot featured on the Food Network. We couldn't decide which type we wanted so we ordered the sampler (12 different kinds) in which a guide accompanied the skillet so you'd know which kind you were eating. While the M&C was slightly oilier than I would have liked it definately met my expectations. Initially I was afraid it would taste a smidge above something that Hometown Buffet serves with the fake orange cheese sauce but they had that baked crust top that I love! Washed everything down with a Stella Artois and we were happy campers for dinner tonight.
Mac and cheese. You can't go wrong. I opted for the traditional. Got the second biggest size. Plenty of food. Will go back to try the different flavors for sure.
Both my friend and I had been wanting to try smac forever. Delicious flavors of mac and cheese - what's not to like? So I wish I could review this place based on what it tastes like but sadly I will never know.
We queued up and placed an order for the sampler. The place was very crowded and we finally finagled a table, and sat down when our order came. Eagerly, my friend took a forkful, and waited for me to dip my fork in. In my very first forkful, I spot a hair and point it out to her.
Ewwww! She identifies it as a hair from "down below" and we ask for and receive our money back, no questions asked after showing them the hair. Thankfully neither of us had actually eaten the mac and cheese, but now I will never come back again.
Now I will never get to taste s'mac, which I kinda regret, but I guess I'm alright with that.
I'm a huge fan of mac n' cheese but have been trying to stay away from it for health reasons. My friend suggested this place after hitting a bar just down the street from S'mac.
I ordered the Napoletana and I ate the whole skillet myself in one sitting! I loved breaking through the top hardened cheese to get to the mac underneath. The cheese was just right underneath there --not too thick. It was good for the $7 price.
I tried my friend's Mediterranean and I think I'll be ordering that the next time! Took just one bite of the mediterranean and I felt like it changed my life.
I definitely recommend this place as a spot for tourists, food/cheese enthusiasts, and just everybody that wants a damn good skillet of mac n' cheese.
S'Mac has been quietly around for three years now, tucked away under some trees on East 12th Street, but well-known to those in the neighborhood. I've never been to the cafeteria side and always ordered takeout, but both are pretty much the same. I often times regret my decision though, knowing that it would be much easier to get the sticky parts off the bowl with a real fork instead of a plastic one.
Ordering is not brain surgery, as the menu is comprised of different variations on one theme: macaroni & cheese (surprise!). I'm not sure that the fancy "international" flavors are worth splurging for and always stick to the simple cheese options at the top of the menu.
The All-American ($4.75, small "nosh") is a good bet and the cheapest item on the board. I can't say it is a full meal, as none of the "nosh" sizes are (the big individual portion ranges from $3 to $3.50 more than the small depending on the selection), but it's a good snack.
The mac & cheese here is good, soft elbows with plenty of tasty cheese, parts crispy and brown near the outside which I would actually like more of. Maybe it would be worth telling them to leave it in the oven an extra minute or two.
The idea of a mac-n-cheese restaurant is simply divine. This is the adult version of Kraft mac-n-cheese with hot dogs we used to make back in college.
If you're a first timer, definitely get the sample platter. It allows you to try 8 different flavors, and it's a sure way to maximize your s'mac experience. Cheeseburger was a hit among my friends. It tasted like, well, cheeseburger! Alpine was absolutely delicious. I guess anything with slab bacon is good! The only one I wasn't too crazy about was Parisienne. I'm not sure how to explain the taste of roasted figs and shiitake mushrooms in mac-n-cheese. Something is not quite right with that combination.
I'm definitely going back in the near future.
