I've been coming here since the late 70s when it was Cape Bowl, and not part of the Ryan chain.  I went candlepin bowling last night with a friend from Atlanta who had never tried it before.

For those unfamiliar, candlepin is common in New England.  The main differences are that each player bowls three balls per frame, the balls are smaller (grapefruit-sized) and without holes.  The pins are taller and skinnier, and the lane is not cleared of what you knocked over in between balls.  Scores are generally lower, because it's harder to knock down all the pins.

This establishment has mostly candlepin lanes, with a few tenpin on the end.  There is a small arcade with a few games, and you can play for tickets then redeemable for a bit of candy or a plastic toy.  The lanes are clean and the staff was friendly. Weeknights after 9 it's a dollar a game plus a dollar for shoes, quite a bargain.  Even before nine we only paid $14 for two pair of shoes and four games.

We had a great time, and plan to return one of these weeknights after nine!!

Yes, I've done it, my first one-star review. Sadly, the bowling itself was not bad at all, but the staff working the front absolutely ruined my experience there.

It was a rainy day on the Cape and there were 8 of us crowded into my parent's beach house in Dennis Port. What's better than a little (competitive) family bowling? We fully expected the place to be packed, I even called and they said it was around a 1/2 hour wait. Fine, we went in with full-disclosure that it was a rainy Sunday on the cape.

When we walked in, it wasn't too chaotic at the front desk, but still felt pretty ignored. My mother told the guy we wanted candlepin NOT ten pin - I was right beside her when she said it. They have blue tickets and yellow tickets (little did we know, this meant either candlepin or ten pin). We waited about 1/2 an hour and when our number was called a different guy "helped" us at the front. He didn't seem to know where the correct size shoes were and threw a pair we said were the wrong size. Then, when we headed over to the lane he assigned us, we found it was a ten pin one. When we inquired:

Him: "Well, you have a blue ticket and that means ten pin."
Us: "But we asked for candlepin."
Him: "It wasn't me was it?"
Us: "No." and I pointed to the guy who did take our name who promptly turned away from us.
Him: "Is it really that big of a deal to have ten pin?"
Us: "Yes, because we asked for candlepin and that's what we would like to play."
Him: (Looking at us like we were horrible people and ACTUALLY said) "Well, I can put you at a lane but you are cutting like 3 groups and that's kind of the worst thing in the world."
Us: (cricket noises because we can't believe what the guy actually just said)
Him: "Here you go, Lane 9, you guys just cut so many people and that's really not fair."
Me: "We didn't know what the color the tickets meant and asked for candlepin."
Him: " YOU HAVE LANE 9!" (yelling at me)

How completely unprofessional, I don't care if you do work at a bowling alley, you should treat customers nicely. There was a girl behind the counter that just started at us the whole time. I cannot even believe how this employee treated my family and all the side commentary. NEVER EVER going back, I don't need to be treated like that!
