Great burgers, nice by the glass wine selection and excellent service but you can't hit more than 3 stars when you don't serve fries without a good story explaining why!
French Dip sandwich, Artichoke dip, Ahi Tuna Salad, 'nuff said...a great stop for an early lunch or an dinner providing you arrive before the big rush! Nice cozy outdoor seating area with open bar and wood burning fire pit. The smell of burning wood permeates the air indoors and on hot days makes it almost unbearable. Good selection of drinks at both bars and with a bit of prodding the bartender might just add an extra dash of alcohol to extend your buzz. If you weren't able to walk in at Tra Vigne or French Laundry stop by Rutherford Grill for a decent meal after a long day of wine tasting.
This location is an Applebees for the upper middle class. The ribs that everyone raves about are dry. It's loud and noisy and its the place to see and be seen. If you haven't been it's like a must go to place similar to the Slanted Door in SF. You have to have gone once because it's the place to go - people love it or feel it's highly overated. Don't get me wrong the garlic mashed are to die for and wine list is superior. I'm not impressed. But try it, you may like it.

Great grilled artichoke, and it is worth going only for the artichoke. The heirloom tomato salad is delicious too, ask for it even if it isn't on the menu. But it is downhill from there until you get to desserts. The main courses are OK. The skillet cornbread is nice IF you can get it fresh out of the oven; otherwise it is past its prime. The real problem here is the service: lame, airhead, bimbos who totally forget what has been ordered, but look good apologizing. I find it too frustrating to have only part of my meal and drinks arrive. This place is not worth it. But if you do go, a seat at the bar is fun with better service and fun, local characters. Worth 3 stars at the bar.
OK this place is seriously my fave bday spot. Along w/the rest of my immediate family. I just went there for my bday on wednesday and it was awesome. The service is spot on and friendly. The drinks are usually awesome although the long island I got was a little off. Just a note I suppose though, I haven't really tried many things on the menu. I always get the same thing. I'm not into branching out here. It's the Prime Rib French Dip. SO GOOD. That's all. p.s. get the colcannon mash potatoes.

Definitely a great lunch/dinner place if you are in the Napa area. I have been here multiple times with my family and the food and service is always great.
I usually get the Bangers and Mash. YUM! The mashed potatoes are so delicious. While totally random, the deviled eggs here are not to be missed! I have never had a bad meal here.
The one thing about this place that sucks is the wait. The service is great, but I once got in a huge bitch fight with another customer at the hostess desk. The host felt so bad that he was rude to me that she came and apologized later.
Come for the great food...ignore the lame yuppies that eat here.
We came here for lunch after a round of wine tasting. It was about 2pm and we were seated inside immediately.
Decided to share a cream of wild mushroom soup, "Hacked" chicken salad and grilled ostrich.
The cream of wild mushroom is a fairly thick soup with chunks of wild mushroom. It had pieces of potato and was not overly season. I typically shy away from cream based soup, but this one was not overly heavy. Pretty good, but something I am unlikely to order on my own.
The hacked chicken salad is an upscale southwestern salad. Instead of iceberg lettuce, bitter greens were used instead. Tortilla strips and honey lime vinaigrette gave the distinct southwest flavor. I enjoyed this dish, and may even try to recreate it at home.
we ordered the grilled Ostrich meat medium rare. It was an extremely tender piece of meat. The chef wisely did not do too much to the meat and glazed it just slightly with a sweet sauce. The meat itself has fairly mild flavor but the texture of a very tender piece of beef. The dish came with sauteed broccoli with lemon and Parmesan cheese as well as a garlic mashed potatoes. Both sides were quite good. I like the broccoli dish enough to try and recreate it at home too.
Lunch for 2 was about $50 before tax. Slightly expensive, but we were in Napa.

If you happen to stop here for lunch or dinner the famous cornbread served in a skillet is a must. There rotissere chicken sandwich is also great. Big portions..very possible to share a dish and feel satisfed/full when you leave!
I had such a an overwhelming experience at Rutherford's last Sunday that I don't know quite how to make sense of it all. The food was outstanding, the cornbread was so good it made me want to slap my grandma - literally go to her house in the Leisure Village retirement community with corn bread all over the right side of my face and slap her. Dovetailed with the cuisine was possibly one of the best servers I've had in a long time. But there is another thing about Rutherford's that sets it apart from other places in Napa - the people watching is worth 6 stars on its own.
First observation - Fake boobs. If I was a plastic surgeon and a 54 year old woman came in and said, "Hello, I would like 36 DD cup breasts." I would say, "Well, I'd be happy to put those in for you but you will still look like a dragon, a dragon with permanently hard nipples but a dragon none the less."
Second Observation - Gucci Sun Glasses look really bad on guys that wear golf shirts and tapered jeans. It's obvious your girlfriend settled cause she has self-esteem issues or an eating disorder or she was the first one to get skinny in her group of fat friends but don't let Ms. McNugget 01 choose your sun glasses just wear the wrap arounds and be consistent.
Third Observation - Third time Divorcees who spent all morning on their perfect Sunday afternoon Napa "look" who are holding a glass of Chardonnay and laughing in-authentically just reek of desperation.
Fourth Observation - I can't wait to come back with my judgemental friends and really do some people watching.

Call it whatever you want. But, at the end of the day, this is a Houston's. And, that is not a bad thing,
It looks like an old time roadside eatery with high wood ceilings. However, at the bar which is in the center of the restaurant hand two wide screen TVs showing ESPN.
It seems that they have a mandate that at least 80% of the staff needs to be blonde.
I started with a small Caesar salad which was delish. Great dressing and croutons. I then had the Prime Rib French Dip. The bread was lightly toasted or, perhaps, grilled which was a nice touch. The sandwich was great. It wasn't too salty but it was not Brennan & Carr either. http://www.yelp.com/bi... I had their Very Wild Rice as my side. I have absolutely no idea what they put in that stuff but it was freakin' amazing. I could've eaten an entire bucket of that stuff.
I did not, however, appreciate being charged $3 for each of the two 10 oz bottles of Diet Coke I had. You mean I paid 6 bucks for what would have cost like $0.89 at 7-11??!?!?!?!?!?!!
On a final note, the men's room is gorgeous and I loved leaving with the smell of the Molton Brown soap they have in there on my hands.

This place is really surprising. I went there without checking yelp first (oops) and was blown away. I was expecting good fufu food since it was located at a prime spot in Rutherford, but it was hardly the case.
The rotisserie chicken is spinning in the corner and has been for hours looking amazing. Since I already picked out a delicious cabernet I went with the steak...YUM! Also, for this being ground zero of tourist trap central the prices relatively reasonable.
Only downside at all is there were clearly tourists next to us who hadn't hear of yelp so they were audiblizing their meal play-by-play, which was kind of annoying. Overall a small price to pay for a great meal, great service and of course great wine!

Houston, Los Altos grill...basically the same
atmosphere? nice, busy but its napa valley.
food? good ol BBQ. I ate the lamb this last time. mmm lamb(humming mary had a little lamb in my head) but I've had the ribs here to, not that great if you ask me. grilled artichoke a must have. skillet cornbread is great. veggie burger is one of the best veggie burgers I've had.
You know what? the food is just good. Our waiters have always been good. suggested a great zin this last time and it was just a good dinner.
I like this place and will keep coming back. Its not "the best ever! OMG" its about good...I wish i could give 3.5 or so, but because I know I'll almost always stop by when we are in the neighborhood I have to give it 4 stars.
Food = good ole BBQ. I remember the ribs...drool. Good sandwiches and salads too.
Wines = delicious...c'mon, in this area, of course! Prices are great though.
Service = friendly and fast. But's a nice sit-down place.
Something I remember about this place...their napkin doubles easily as a bib...and you know? It has a buttonhole, for you to attached to your shirt (assuming it has a button!) It's the simple things sometimes! ;-)

The food and people are always good here. It is always busy, especially late at night. I was told this was a Houston's Restaurant chain so I'm not surprise of the great food and service. I've been coming back many times when I have to work up this part of California.

the BEST bbq pork ribs in the USA. Before you southerners get all up in a knot, it's better than these other famous rib establishments I've dined at:
- Salt Lick, Austin
- Rudy's, all over TX
- Rendevouz, Memphis
- Corky's, Memphis
* Also, their wine prices are similar to grocery store pricing! So bring on that Rutherford Hill merlot - Woo hoo!

By far my favorite place to eat when in the wine country! Every single thing that I've eaten here is amazing! 2 things that suck...#1 is the wait. It's a popular place so the wait can be a bummer when your starving and drunk from all the wine tasting. #2 is deciding what you want to eat. The food is sooo good it's hard to make a choice. I would love to order everything! They have the best french dip sandwich. The cornbread is a must as a starter...served fresh out of the oven in a skillet. Oh and DO NOT LEAVE unless you have tried the banana cream pie! It is unbelievable! Unlike any pie I've ever had!
The service is also very good. The servers are always helpful with the menu and specials.

OK - I admit to going back here every time we visit BUT.... it is not because they are consistently good with service. The first time SUCKED beyond belief as they misplaced our order (we THINK) on a rainy and business-free afternoon. After we watched the restaurant fill and get served all around us, we had to remark on the fact that our simple orders appeared to be forgotten. That said, the food was very good when we finally pried it out of the kitchen. And no apologies or price break or comps or anything; that is Napa hospitality, Bay-bee. Last time, the young server we had was excellent in both recommendations on wine and food and we could not have been happier. Be ready to wait and be patient with whatever transpires.
This is and will forever be one of my favorite restaurants...I know it's part of a chain and oh, if only every chain could be this good and "un-chain" like.
Let's hit the highlights: I have never, NEVER, had a bad meal here or regretted what I ordered (if anything I make a mental note of what to try next time). The bartenders are amazing, very attentive and the drinks prove it. No corkage fee, which is a plus after acquiring bottles from previous wine tasting (if applicable).
I won't go into too much detail on the food because you can't go wrong. But the wait can be a problem, especially if you're a little tipsy from wine tasting. Definitely scope out the bar. I was lucky enough to grab a spot one night while waiting for a table and ended up eating there because the bartender was that good. On a nice day though take advantage of the outside. Bring a bottle of wine or make friends with the outside bartender....by my second trip he had my order memorized (three drinks all different) (not all for myself of course) so I got to make eye contact then wait for the drinks to magically appear.
Bottom line: get ready to spend some time but well worth the wait and being wine country there is always good people watching....all mentioned in previous posts and couldn't be said better here
So it's been a while since I've been here (ok...about a year) but while planning our next trip to the Napa Valley, I remembered this gem.
The food was AMAZING, portion size was perfect for dinner. We sat at the big open bar area in the middle of the restaurant which was great because we had the full attention of the bartender. She ended up letting us taste a couple bottles that she personally recommended. The service there was fantastic (although slow, but then again, we were there on a Saturday afternoon during peak season).
After a few too many bottles of wine, we decided not to make the drive back to the city and the bartender gave us a great recommendation for a place to stay down the street. This place went above and beyond to make sure that their guests were taken care of. Everything you want and need in a great, memorable restaurant!
Driving along Highway 29, tummy rumbling, eyes scanning for a place to eat, I spotted Rutherford Grill which I was immediately attracted to since my twin sister is a manager for their company. It was 2 in the afternoon but there was still a 45 minute wait, a clear indicator of how good the restaurant is. Luckily we were in WINE COUNTRY and the nearest winery was just a short walk from the restaurant, so the 45 minutes went by rather quickly as we sipped on Beaulieu Vineyard's reserve selection.
I should have tried something new, but the veggie burger sounded SO good that I just had to get it again (I had it at Houston's--see my review--when I visited my sister Noelle M. in KC). It was, of course, SO good and I'm glad I got it. I was looking forward to having squash as a side dish, but the only veggie available was carrots which I didn't want...but they ended up being rather tasty.
SCANDAL OF ALL SCANDALS: Rutherford Grill does not, I repeat DOES NOT, have French fries of any shape, size, or flavor. This is great if you're trying to eat healthy in 2008, but for me, I love anything French or fried, especially if it's both. So yes, that was disappointing. My BF got enchiladas which were super good, and his broccoli was purple which was fun (check the pictures on the main page). I had a whiskey sour to drink with my meal and I swear to G it was the best whiskey sour I have ever consumed in my life. The bartender used fresh squeezed juice that was so naturally sweet it was hard to even taste the alcohol (which there was plenty of, I watched her pour it).
Finally, we got total VIP treatment because of our family connection to the restaurant, and our super nice waiter Lance comped us a side of kettle chips, a drink, and a banana cream pie which, and I'll deny ever saying this, was better than my grandmother's famous version of the dessert. THANK YOU RUTHERFORD FOR A DELISH LUNCH!

I absolutely crave their French dip sandwich. Easily the best I've ever had. It almost brings me to tears. Their grilled artichoke appetizer in phenomenal as well. Love the sashimi salad as well.
Whenever we visit the Rutherford area we go to the Rutherford Grille. Best food ever, the cheese appetizers dip was amazing. Very bustling and noisy, but the food is worth it. I cannot say that I like to wait to eat so we made the reservation and still needed to wait a bit.
This wine valley, you tend to get the long wait thing, but when seated the service was great and pretty quick service.
Based on experience, I would most likely give a 4 star rating, but overall, it's hard to fault a good restaurant based on folks wanting to stay there!
Cheers-
SPFA
Solid style, from the waiters (black shirt, bluejeans, white apron) to the interior design (plenty of wood, great light, comfy booths).
Have never eaten a tastier (or larger) veggie burger in my life.
Excellent experience.
Enjoyed an early dinner here a few months ago on a Napa visit. Glad it was early too (arrived a little after 5 on a Thursday eve) as the place was completely packed a couple hours later.
First observation: Deja Vu! Exact same layout as Sacramento's Bandera, and sure enough the hostess confirmed its part of the same group (chain?) of restaurants. As I had enjoyed a Fabulous Rib Eye at my local chop shop, I decided to see if RG held up to Bandera's reputation for its beef. A Rib Eye with mushroom sauce which was offered as a special and my date and I both ordered it. We were not disappointed, steaks were generously sized, cooked to perfection (medium rare), served with a perfect baked potato and we both would have loved to had more mushroom sauce served as a soup.
Another Plus was No CORKAGE fee, so we brought in a recently purchased Grgich Zin to enjoy with our meal.
Many thanks to a local resident (wine pourer) for recommending this restaurant and for mentioning the no corkage fee!
I loved this restaurant. The food was great - it had something for everyone and the prices weren't ridiculous. The service was great, the ambiance was nice and the dessert sealed the deal! Their oreo dessert hit the spot!
Veggie Burger = excellent. I ate the whole thing, and the portion was huge. Using rice with BBQ sauce was certainly different, but it worked very well.
The wait = not excellent
Cornbread in the skillet = (smelled) excellent
A sister restaurant to Houston's in SF... I love going here either before or after a spa treatment at Golden Haven... The fireplace is especially nice on a rainy day/evening. The Rotisserie Chicken is good.
I can smell the ribs as I type.....
I love coming here and when my husband goes there without me, I get sad :( I also am a fan of the hacked chicken salad. Great wine selection, although usually at this point my tastebuds are shot and I am ready for a beer.
Last time we were there, it was the usual forever wait. I strolled over the the St. Helena Olive Oil Company and walked around the store grazing like a cow on all the cool tasters......
Did I mention the people watching: (as seen on the patio)
A rather large and big boned couple in their 50's sits down on the patio with a bottle of white wine...she is wearing her standard Chico's attire, he in his Tommy Bahama uniform. They look like the world's most miserable couple who have not been laid since their wedding night. Each look like the other has been threatened with death or heart attack should they say anything to each other. They sit in silence drinking wine and texting on their Blackberry's....obviously not to each other. Looks like he is doing work on this fine sunny afternoon, she was probably texting Sven the poolboy to rub her bunions.
It was some sort of bizarre Napa Valley trainwreck that I couldn't put my finger on....
It was sad really.....but it kept me entertained during what seemed like a two hour wait. I decided to go back to the olive oil place and buy some lotion and debate obtaining an eating disorder, because apparently being gelatinously endowed makes you miserable.
for restaurant's in Napa, this one's a safe choice.
we really wish we could give it 4.5 stars -- but let's be honest. it feels just like houston's. or gulfstream in LA. all part of the same restaurant group. we digress.
do yourself a favor and start with the grilled artichoke.
the baby back ribs practically fell off the bone. paired with coleslaw and potato chips. a perfect platter.
her chicken salad disappeared quickly, but i saw her eyeing my ribs.
i imagine we'll be back soon.
Right along the main drag in Napa Valley, you will find this fabulous restaurant!
Everyone at our table ordered the Prime Rib Au Jus sandwiches that are Out-of-this-World phenomenal. I know I have to go back for these!
Fun vibe, very friendly staff, and great food.
Hope you have a chance to visit!
Always a solid choice for lunch or dinner. Good location, friendly service, excellent food, satisfactory wine list. Try the ostrich steak. Haven't had that dish in two years and I still talk about it. And hey, is there a better icebreaker in the world than, "Hi there. I've eaten ostrich. What's your name?" Sixty percent of the time, it works every time.
The Grill gets crowded, especially during high season, so don't be surprised to wait for a table.
You cannot beat this place in my mind for the overall experience. They have heated patio seating along with a nice atmosphere inside also. Start off with the skillet cornbread or the Caesar Salad...Entrees...the Prime Rib French Dip is to die for along with the Tri Tip with the home made Chicken Enchiladas and of course the ribs. The only thing that isn't great here is the side dishes...rice, potatoes are just fair. Top it off with the Oreo Sundae for dessert.
This is what makes it 5 stars to me....no corkage for your own wine.
I have to say that the Ahi Salad here is to die for. This is a great place to have lunch outside while up in Napa. They do not charge a corkage (or at least didn;t the last time I was there). I have to say I have actually had dreams about the ahi salad!
Their food kicks ass after a day of wine tasting. I think they literally had to roll us out of there. I took away one star only because the wait tends to be ridiculous, but at least you can walk to BV for wine tasting.
Their cornbread appetizer is always a must. Their ribs are to die for. They literally fall right off the bone. My little sis ate a whole rack. The enchiladas are spicy and authentic tasting, it by far is the best deal. I had the burger which was extremely satisfying. One minus is that they don't serve fries. Several pluses for their excellent margaritas though.
The Rutherford Grill ranks as one of my favorite dining experiences. The restaurant is located off of the main drag in the Napa Valley wine region, which means it gets pretty crowded. I showed up for a late lunch / early dinner and the wait time was not too bad.
I was lucky enough to get a table outside on a nice autumn day to enjoy some warm sun, views of the sky and surrounding hills, and some fun people watching too. The restaurant interior is nice as well, it has a contemporary American look to it: dark wood elements but pretty well-lit. They have a pretty good sized bar inside where one can enjoy a glass of wine while waiting for a table.
It goes without saying, the wine selection for a restaurant in Napa Valley is plentiful and phenomenal. The wines pair nicely with the food, which in itself is great. I highly recommend the skillet cornbread -- probably the best I've ever had -- and this is coming from someone who is a true fan of cornbread and all foods southern. The cornbread has fresh corn kernels in it and has diced green chilies in it (but it's not spicy or sour like some of the other jalapeno breads I've tried elsewhere). The cornbread is sweet, but not too sweet: it's just perfect.
Beyond cornbread, the menu features many grilled or barbecued items, some American classics, and some more contemporary American dishes one would expect and want to see and try while traveling through Napa Valley and Northern California in general. The menu has lots of variety and features what I think is a great mix between vegetable-based and meat-based entrees. There is definitely something for everyone on the menu, and don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to try a little from everyone's plate at your table :)
They really do a great job at this restaurant: you've read my rave about the wine and food, the service is very attentive, the atmosphere is casual and nice. The late lunch / early dinner is a great way to experience it without too much of a wait, and by the time you wrap up your meal, you can get on the road early enough to beat (or at least get a jump on) the evening crush of tourist traffic out of the valley.
Oh, and if you have a moment before or after your meal at Rutherford Grill, there's a neat little store to check out across the street from it: the St. Helena Olive Oil Company.
After a wonderful day spent in Calistoga with the boy, we proceeded to drive slowly down the pretty road back to civilization, and as a part of my "special" day in Napa/Calistoga, boy planned to take me to Rutherford Grill.
When I first saw the place, I cringed in horror - I was expecting a very unique place - there seems to be plenty of those in this area - but saw a restaurant that looked like an upscale cookie cutter restuarant you would find in a bigger city. Not only that, there were a gajillion of people here, and the wait was - GASP - 30-45 minutes!? I was famished and proceeded to pout, while the SO remained annoyed. However, After we located the nice heatlamps on the patio and I actually took a second look at the place, I realized it was very thoughtfully and tastefully decorated and laid out! There were nice serene fountains with bamboo and large stones surrounding the patio with heatlamps sprinkled throughout the area and ample seating for anyone who wanted to brave the cold outside. I'm supposing in the warmer months they open the enclosed bar which looks like it served wine by the glass to the patio-stitters. The interior looked like your standard steakhouse decor with a lively bar in the center of the room. The bathrooms were clean and nicely lit and decorated with a magnifying glass mirror for the ladies, and, from what the boy tells me, TV's in the urinals!
The service was not the best I've ever had, but it was very competent, and our server spoke in a clear and concise voice and made eye contact as well as checked back every now and again to see if we needed any help. What i DIDN'T like however, was one of the girls taking away the places just ... took my plate of half eat chicken away and never brought it back. She didn't even ask if I wanted to take it with me, and that annoyed me a little bit.
The food was better than I thought, we had:
Deviled Eggs - $5 for 5 halves of an egg loaded with egg, celery and spices; simple but very appetizing and nicely filling for a pre-entree dish
Clam Chowder - WOW. I really liked this for some reason; thick creamy clam chowder with chunks of potatoes and substantial crackers (not the tiny ass ones that you cant even see! theres were just the right shape, thickness, and held the crunch just perfectly)
Ostrich Steak - Cooked medium rare served with potatoes and spinach and very tasty. This was an experience, and the ostrich didn't really taste as gamey as I thought it would!
Wood fired rotisserie Chicken - This was a little less flavorfull and a little too dry for me; the chicken skin was crispy but TOO salty and the chicken meat itself was too dry and flavorless. Next time I'll skip this and go for the rotisserie lamb maybe?
ANyways, this is a great place to stop at, but just don't order the wine here - by my standards its a bit too expensive for the wine with wines by the glass starting from $10 - $16. Hmpf.
Otherwise, very lovely and a good experience!

I would like to give this place 4.5 stars. 5 stars for the tuna salad and 4 for the chicken salad. I went here for lunch and thought it was a perfect place. The service was friendly and the food selection was great for lunch - some salads, some sandwiches and burgers and some entrees too.
As I said, the tuna salad was excellent. The was slightly seared and had this salt and pepper spice on the outside. If I didn't know any better, I would have thought this was a steak. It almost melted in my mouth it was so good.
The "hacked" chicken salad was also good. I wasn't a huge fan of the dressing, but it had lots of chicken, corn and some tortilla chips all mixed.
A very enjoyable meal here.
