We actually stumbled on this place through an old friend named google. This place has smaller cabins with all the amenities. It's a good mix of roughing it and having everything you need to live. The kicker to this place is the staff. Every morning we got to sit in the central dining room and have waffles and later in the day they had fresh cookies and brownies.
And to comment on people complaining about the staff. Why did you come to this place if you wanted someone waiting on you hand foot?
I'm torn between 3 or 4 stars. The place is very cozy and affordable, plus there are a lot of perks like movies to borrow and saucers to play in the snow. I did like my cottage (Vista) very much; the gas fireplace really warmed it up and it's a great place to be to watch the snow fall. But it was very small with no place to sit but hard, cold, iron chairs and there are cheap shades that don't quite open enough to let sunlight in. Also, they're a little slow about clearing the mounds of ice from the doorsteps and stairs. This place is seriously understaffed and very hectic at times, but when you do get a hold of somebody they're very friendly. And yes, it is awesome to come back after a day of snowboarding and grab a brownie and teabag from the office to enjoy in your cottage. Conveniently close to Northstar.
**UPDATE: Though I consider the above review to be quite positive, I thought Yelpers would be interested to know I received a handwritten letter in the mail from Rustic Cottages reading only, "We were nothing but kind to you. You chose our smallest room with a fireplace and then wrote this mean spirited review. It is just not right." I thought this quite unprofessional and strange given all the compliments in the review. Anyway, my review remains unchanged.
BEST PLACE EVER. It's true: the brownies are delicious. The staff are incredibly friendly. It's so inexpensive that we felt we were cheating someone! We had a kitchenette, so we walked to the grocery and enjoyed dinner "at home." There are adirondack chairs on the lawn, so you can sit and have coffee outside and look at the mountains. Borrow a hibachi, movies, even croquet sets! Make your own waffles for breakfast, or have a delicious fresh-baked muffin.
Why stay in a hotel/motel and listen to the neighbors' TV through the walls when you can stay in a cottage? Free cable, TV/VCR, and all the amenities you'd get at a bed and breakfast at motel rates. Even the postcards are free!
I'd recommend this to anyone visiting Tahoe. I only wish I'd known about the whipped cream.
This is the cutest place ever! It was my bf and I's first trip to Tahoe, and this place really saved the trip (after a slew of unfortunate travel mishaps.)
First, when my boyfriend's snowboard didn't arrive at the airport on time, the nice manger stayed up until midnight to wait for the delivery guy from southwest. This allowed us to to stay in our cozy and comfortable cottage instead of wait in the lobby.
Then, when we couldn't catch the bus to a casino a few miles away (after waiting for 20 minutes) we returned defeated to the cottage lobby. We went in to inquire about a taxi service, and the nice woman at the desk VOLUNTEERED to take us herself! She said it was no problem since she was going to Safeway to get food for her boys.
And lastly, on our last day, our airport shuttle was scheduled to pick us up at 1pm. When we asked about checking out late, the same manager lady said it was no problem, she would just ask the cleaning crew to clean our cabin last.
We were just so grateful to have such warm, caring people running this place. Rustic Cottages is what good, old-fashioned customer service is all about! I highly recommend it to anyone! Besides the OUTSTANDING customer service, the cabins are cute, clean, and a very reasonable deal!
And everything everyone else has said about the free tea, cookies, brownies and breakfast...it's true!! Movies and popcorn are free even!
Just returned from the Rustic Cottages with a huge smile on my face. We stayed in the Glenbrook Cottage and throughly enjoyed every minute. Our cottage was so cute and cozy and the staff was FANTASTIC. The breakfast waffles in the mornings were such a great touch. I can't wait to come back.
Rustic Cottages is a great (and inexpensive) place to stay in Tahoe. The cabins are cute with nice linens, the innkeepers amazing (brownies at 5pm daily, charming service, great breakfast) , cable tv, fireplace, and most importantly, they allow dogs in about half the cabins. We stayed in the summer and loved being in the shade of the tall pines. Croquet is set up on the lawn, each cottage has a deck with chairs and there is a lovely (but not dog friendly) beach just across the street.
I am looking forward to visiting in the winter - this seems like the greatest place to go after a day of snow and skiing.
We stay here or at their sister resort, the Tahoe Vista Lodge, whenever we visit Tahoe's north shore. The place is very family friendly --- there are free movie rentals and saucer sleds for use, as well as free brownies and chocolate chip cookies that always seem to be fresh out of the oven. Did you forget your toothbrush, toohpaste or razor? No problem, the front desk has plenty to spare for you.
We've stayed there on our own and we've gone with several other families. The small collection of cottages was at one time a mining camp so they are positioned close enough to walk back and forth between them if you visit with friends. The cabins are quaint and cozy, the staff is very friendly and encourages visitors to make themselves at home.
Other things worthy of note ---- continental breakfast is included and the place is dog friendly.

Thank you yelpers we had a great time here. We stayed in the seqouia. Clean & Comfortable Well priced.
Close to Everything and Nothing all at the same time.
i went to tahoe last weekend and needed a dog-friendly place to stay in north tahoe, and after some digging around, i fount the Rustic Cottages. about half the cabins are dog friendly, and if they don't have room, you can check their sister property, Tahoe Vista Cabins, about a mile down the road.
the place is cute, the cabins have nice double paned windows, faux stone linoleum in the bathrooms, cute decks w/ a little table and a few chairs, some cabins just have a small fridge, microwave and coffee maker, and i think some of the larger ones have kitchens and even gas fireplaces. we got THE smallest cabin and it was TINY, so be prepared, they aren't huge, but you get what you pay for (about $90/night) PLUS an additional $20 per dog per night (yikes!). the property is right across the street from a beautiful, NOT dog friendly beach (bummer!), but i took yogi there early one morning for a walk anyway. they serve breakfast starting around 8am (should be earlier considering some of us want to get checked out and be on that mountain to get our ski on!), and you can make your own waffles. you can either eat in their dining room, or bring back to your porch to eat. they have homemade brownies for you every evening, and a nice sitting room w/ fire place near the main office. they also have a bowl of toothpaste there, up for grabs, in case you forget yours...
they are considered dog friendly, but you can't leave your dog unattended AT ALL, NOT EVER in the cabins, not even if they are crated! WTF??? they charge $20/night per dog, and if you go skiing and you have to board them, tack on another $20-$30/day! their argument for that is that you come up to tahoe NOT to have your dog sit in your room but to hang out with it! however, i see nothing wrong with going out to dinner (where your dog CAN'T go) and leaving them alone for a few hours, or going to the store to pick something up - that's what i do at home! so i decided that i would only stay there one night because i don't like their dog policy, and was planning to go down to Holly's Place in South Tahoe where ther are TRULY dog friendly! however i ended up staying w/ a friend and will have to see Holly next time. Yogi was really looking forward to Holly's 2 acres of fenced in loveliness! if you DO need to board you're dog, good news is that they are very close to a doggy daycare center, Doggone Crazy (just yards east of Rustic Cabins on N. Lake, left at the light on National and about 1/4 up the road.)
so if you're looking for a rustic (hence the name) no frills cabin in north tahoe close to the water, and want a semi-dog friendly place, this place ain't bad.
We found Rustic Cottages online and decided to stay there for three reasons: 1) it's pet friendly, 2) the price was reasonable, and 3) it got excellent reviews.
It was our first hotel stay with the dogs, and I had no idea what to expect. I was relieved to find that the room didn't smell like dog - there was actually no sign that dogs had been there, which made me feel proud of the other responsible doggy parents. However, besides not smelling like a dog kennel, I wasn't extremely impressed. Maybe my expectations were too high because of all the raving reviews I had read.
It was a decent enough place for the price; it looked clean enough, the sheets were soft and comfy, it stayed nice and warm despite the single digit temps outside, and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook a light dinner. It just didn't give me that, cozy, comfortable, relaxed feeling I was expecting from a "Rustic Cottage" (I guess I should have looked up "rustic" in the dictionary before I booked it). Maybe it was the set-up; we had the cabin with the separate bedroom and the only places to sit in the kitchen / living area were cold hard wrought iron chairs or a too-bouncy creaky day bed that sank in the middle. Maybe it was how small it was with the two of us and 2 big dogs. Or maybe I just expected too much for a hundred bucks.
I also had a problem with the dog policy. It was freezing outside and if we wanted to go anywhere, they had to stay in the truck, so we just went to the store and brought dinner back. Like the other reviewer, we leave our dogs in the house alone when we go to dinner, the store - or even to work- and they behave perfectly. The extra $40 for our 2 dogs seemed like a rip-off to me. I almost felt like I needed to leave a mess to justify the extra money. (I didn't of course).
Overall, the service was friendly, the brownies and coffee were good, all we saw at breakfast were waffles, which we passed on. As I said, it's a very decent place for the money and I might stay there again if bringing the dogs. Without the dogs, I think I'd try someplace different.
I just had an awesome birthday weekend in Tahoe - thanks, in part, to this lovely charming place. All 10 of us stayed at the Tahoe Vista Lodge in two separate suites. The suites (Bristlecone and Evergreen) were spacious enough that we didn't feel cramped at all, but cozy enough we felt just right at home.
The front desk @ the lodge was super friendly. They didn't even care that at times, all 10 of us just showed up at the front desk and looted all the brownies and cookies. And the souvenir mug was awesome too! We also had over 400+ movies to choose and borrow from (for free)! And somehow, "Nacho Libro" just seemed super hilarious, after a good satisfying day on the slopes, ending with some frou frou birthday cake (from Copenhagen Bakery in San Mateo) and Irish coffee with extra kick. I felted very blessed to have family and friends there with me, celebrating another year of growth!
Living up to its name, the cabins (or suites) are definitely rustic and a little country in style. But definitely clean, comfortable and cozy, with hot water for shower, and working heater. (For the powderhounds, you know those are essential!) A real good bargain overall.
I'd highly recommend this place, but just please stay away every last weekend in February. I intend on coming back next year and the years after, with a bigger crowd, for my special day.
Let me start by stating that overall, our stay was great. The staff was very friendly, although not as available as others places I have stayed (we had to track them down a couple of times). Our cabin, Bijou, was a small, studio "cabin". When I say small, it is VERY small. The cabin barely fit the Queen bed and the kitchen and bathroom weren't much bigger than closets. You have to crate your dog if you leave it alone in the room, however there was barely enough room for the crate. We had to climb over the bed to get around. There are 2 iron chairs w/a table that makes it too much furniture in the room and less room to be able to walk through.
The cabin was very clean, staff very nice and it's great that you can take your dog too. Just keep in mind how small some of the cabins are. If you have a dog with you, I'd recommend getting a bigger cabin. The fireplace in our room was an electric one. It did keep the place cozy warm, but don't expect a real, wood burning one. Also, the breakfast is just juice/coffee, make yourself waffles and some muffins. It was fine/good, but just don't expect a buffet or large selection of food. Again, the location was great, it was clean and it's hard to beat a place that allows dogs.
I'd recommend it if you need a clean place for you and your dog and a good location. Just don't expect any frills.
Is a very nice, romantic place. I wouldn't say it's cheap but it beats a hotel. If you are looking for a quiet night/weekend with someone special this is the place. If you are with the guys or lookin to party, this is not the place.
