Review from Irina G.
Brooklyn, NY
This place reminds me of the cooperative in the Russian Embassy when I was a kid! How can I not give this place a great rating when they have Salat Olivye, and Vinigret, and the all the soviet candies (Prince Polo, and Mishki, and Ptichya Moloko! and all my other favorites from childhood).
I come here to buy layered dough for when I make khachapuri. While I am there, I usually stock up on candy, and also, the tea is ridiculously cheap. They have generic black tea (I am partial to the black currant), 100 tea bags for... $3? At Stop&Shop any box of mediocre flavored black tea (ie: not lipton) is over $5!
Another note, I bought black caviar for my mother's birthday one time, for which I used $60 of my hard earned student budget (with a 10% discount, that made me kind of nervous), only to be pointed out by my father that it was in fact paddlefish, a fish very similar in taste and texture to sturgeon as are its eggs I found. He advised me that if I wanted authentic Russian caviar, I was to make sure it was made imported from Russia (and avoid the "From Brooklyn" label). -

It IS a store, they've moved down the street into the old Village Fruit location. They've also been sold, as the people who owned them before now run the restaurant, located in the old Russian Village space. (vernissage, see my scathing review).
Under old management, it really transported me back to the smelly fishy gastronomical havens of my mother country, along with the, shall we say, less-than-helpful attitude of the staff?
The NEW people are actually pleasant! The store is clean and NOT malodorous. Inventory is decent, and it's the only place I'll buy pelmeni, because their supplier makes them at home. Plus, they're pleasant. The other day, we all collectively looked for lemons before deiciding they were out. No one yelled at me or anything.
The deli section is suspect, though. Looks mildly murdered. Stick to the canned goods and sweets. -

This place is still great. I just want to add that they have frozen puff pastry squares for only $3.99. I feel that puff pastry is often one of those things that stores can charge a fortune for, because making it yourself from scratch is so labor intensive. $3.99 is a great deal.

First time there yesterday. It is awesome. The ladies behind the deli counter were great! Don't speak much English but they try their best to help. Love their bakery item. The buttercream filling is amazingly rich yet not overly sweet. Good selection of bread. WIll definitely return for more goodies.

Went there yesterday with my husband. Bought shashlik (russian bbq)... I grew up in Russia and I know how it should taste. So, was it bad? No! It was horrible! It didn't taste like shashlik AT ALL! What's more, the meat was bad, it def had some smell. My husband felt kinda funny and we just threw away everything we bought! Maybe bc it was the end of the day or right before the holiday, i dunno, but it tasted HORRIBLE! Please, careful with pre-made food there!

I make a habit of ducking into Boston-area Russian food stores whenever I spot them and this one seems pretty standard in terms of stocking what I like - tvorog, frozen goods, chocolate, interesting juices, Borjomi water, cheap but not necessarily attractive produce, etc etc. - with one major exception: this place sells alcohol. If you want Georgian or Moldovan wine, Ukrainian shampanskoe, or a nice cold bottle of Baltika, this is the place to come.

When I shop here, it's like I'm transported back to my mother country. Russian and Romanian food have a lot of similarities, but it's more so the cluttered aisles, early Sunday morning bustle, lack of English and sweet old ladies with shopping carts that warm my heart. A little while ago, I came here on a red caviar (my favorite - $7/jar, not bad) run and decided to pick up some baking soda. Naturally, everything is labeled in Russian so I had no idea if what I was picking up was corn starch, baking soda, baking powder or what. So I asked the women behind the counter. They speak very little English, and my Russian is limited to "da" and "nyet", so I wasn't having much luck. Pretty soon some customers got involved, and before I knew it, I found myself in the midst of a flurry of broken English and Russian as the entire store came to a halt to find me baking soda. I love this place.

I love this store. The service is always pleasant and friendly and they have the best easter bread (made right there!). It is difficult to find places that will make easter bread (paska) on location - Russian Village is a rare gem.

Beautiful and delicous layered cakes, pleasant people, candies and chocolates, a good variety of pancakes, pastas, jams, meats, cheeses, yogurts that are fairly rare around here. This is one of those places to go when you just come back from Europe and are craving that one item, or if you're just curious.
