For what it is, it's probably the best in the city.

A place where you can take your dogs off leash. See some scenery (both literally and figuratively in a view of LA as well as half naked people). And most importantly, work up a sweat.

Don't just follow the pack, veer left on the gravel and take the reverse trail.

    I like this place :)

the hike is short, yes, but IT IS a workout! the first time I came here I had no idea what was coming. We went up the way with the stairs, and they kicked my butt! but I do hear it's the more challenging way, so it's ok. the views at the top where the giant bench is, are

    a m a z i n g!

a bit weird seeing the LA skyline from this angle, but still amazing.

doggies and people everywhere, and we thought we were going early enough to avoid some of this. (started around 8am on a Sunday) this wasn't really a problem for us though and I love that there is water and a doggie bowl up there.

the next time I went, being more mentally prepared and such, it wasn't as challenging as I was expecting, so going around more than once is very do-able, even for out of shape people like myself. although going on a longer hike elsewhere might be more exciting.

this place is conveniently located for anyone in or around the hollywood area and provides a good work out. bring cash for the snack table outside...although I forget every time lol

Great place to hike. Parking can be horrible. Make sure you get there earlier in the morning when it's less crowded and there is less dog poop.

Parking can be found on the street but make sure to read the signs as some streets only allow for non-permit parking from M-F.

I usually take the steeper hiking path because it really works my quads and my butt. The path climbs up two steep mountains. Make sure you have shoes with good traction. The path is super dusty and rocky and can get very slippery. Keep in mind that since you're going up the mountain, you must also get down it. It can be very tricky. The path ultimately leads to Mulholland which spits out at the Cahuenga pass. I don't recommend walking all the way to the Cahuenga pass because there is no designated area for pedestrians.

Great hike and conveniently located near awesome brunch spots (I know this is counter intuitive, oh well).

Parking's a hassle, so either get there early or just park far away and give yourself more of an exercise to get to the park.

Lots of doggies, make sure you go all the way to the top! Past the house with the farm. Good workout if you just even try to jog up on the incline. Beautiful view of L.A. on a clear day.

Runyon is a great escape for the hectic life in LA. Such an amazing way to spend a Saturday/Sunday morning. Parking can be a bit harsh but I love the extra walk to the park. The doggies are so adorable and really brighten up my day, yes you may step into doodoo, but I guess you just have to be aware of it. The people ehh, don't really pay attention to them, I just put my hair up and my earphones in and do my thing, not really interested in anything else but the beautiful scenery, both trails are awesome and a wonderful workout.

It kind of smells like shit up here!

Must be from all the dogs. Definitely free rein for the pooches. Some on leashes, some running amuck, all smelling each others' asses. Watch where you step. People up here don't like to take the same courtesies and pick that shit up.

Other than that we've got the gorgeous, sunny, cleaaaa....who are we kidding...you can see the thick layer of smog settled over Los Angeles. Pretty clear view of that. Feels like you're hiking, but in the city since part of it is spent walking down a cement road. If you veer to the left when the road splits off and go towards the dirt...go all the way down then stay straight and slight right up through the ravine to get back up and out. That was fun and bit more rugged.

You can get pretty nice views of the Hollywood sign too.

Wow...how to describe the eclectic and mixed crowd of people that venture up here. All I know is it is a tad overrated and people want to see and be seen. Although, when I was leaving James Hetfield jogged by. Lol If you can't get out of the city I suppose this is the next best thing on any given day. Just be warned, you will have to hear bits and pieces of random, meaningless, TMZ style conversations, watch dolled up people trying to mingle on the trails (or get discovered ha!) and you might funk your car up if you step in shit; however, I encourage you all to get out there and be healthy. I forgot my ear phones and couldn't stand the frivolous chatter people were talking about. It was like some nightmare where OK Magazine came to life and was acted out by valley girls.

I'd rather hear birds, watch butterflies, and smell pine trees.

I love hiking at Runyon. I am one of those people who is not to into the whole "going to class" to exercise thing. I love the fresh air and the breathtaking views of Runyon. One of these days I really want to try out the free yoga classes here. Does anyone want to join me? I'm definitely a new yogi - and by new I mean lets hang out in the back of the class and flail around.

Runyon is a dog park, so if you don't like dogs you may not like it here. Although there are parts where dogs should be leashed many run around unleashed. I've never seen any issues  between dogs (or for that matter owners) though, and most dogs that run up to you just want to sniff at your legs or a friendly pet and not to maul off your face.

There are a few different trails here for you to choose from. The one towards the right doesn't look too bad at the beginning but it has some steps which aren't the best for me because I can get a bit vertigo-y.  I enjoy the trail to the left though, it's not too hard - the views and wonderful - and the last time I completed it I got further than I ever had before and in a quicker time.

There's a honor system table of snacks and water at the beginning, but not much in the way of restrooms so make sure you take care of business!

My goal is to accomplish Runyon at least one a week for the whole year! Here's hoping I can do it.

    Love this place!
I have been here a few times, I've gone with my boyfriend and we obviously take the dirt road, which goes up the mountains and leaves you on at the very tip top of a beautiful LA view!
It is really a great work out to do a Runyon hike. We normally power walk it up, and I always end up really exhausted and with sore legs. The mountains are a bit dangerous so you do have to be careful and make sure to take shoes with good grip, unlike my worn out running shoes, which made me slide all over the place.
    GREAT place for a hike!
    Highly recommend it to anyone!

Runyon Canyon is a BEAST! Today is the first time we looped back around for a second time and it feels sooooooo good. My body is changing and my breathing has improved tremendously.
The bad thing is that the roads and streets are not being kept up and someone could very easily twist an ankle or worse running down the trail. Also street parking just got more sparse on weekends which sucks!
    Highly recommend Asics' Trail shoes!

Even with the smoggy setting, the 360 view of LA is wonderful - at least, during sunset.

I went up the easier trail to the right, but it was still a nice little workout. If you're up for more of a challenge, I'm told to go to the left, to the left (sorry, had to).

Definitely the place to bring your pups. With that being said, this might not be the hike you want to go on  if you're looking for more of a peaceful kind of a stroll. Unless, of course, having a ton of canines running around is your form of zen.

Personally not the most amazing hike I've ever been on, but still a place I wouldn't mind coming back to if I was near the Hollywood area.

Two types of trials - easy and super hard!

Every time I go there I always run into some C or D list celebrity. Don't know why and don't care - it just shows me that they need to lose weight too!

Love this place - great for dogs and humans. Sometimes I wish they put some of the humans on a leash there...

If you can make it to the top - great view - worth the thousands of calories you're going to burn!

So after living in LA almost 7 years and part of that time I spent living IN Hollywood and have of course always heard about the infamous Runyon!...well I finally went last summer to try the yoga (donation only) and OH MY G! I INSTANTLY fell in love! The yoga, the instructors, a million fit people (and some not) but there is nothing like working out around a bunch of people who look good! Instead of Runyon Canyon it should be called Motivating Mountain!

Sometimes I would go to two classes a day...and on occasion three...yes THREE! aside from the pissy park entrance I love the fact that you can bring your dogs, go hiking, do yoga and there are refreshments for cash at the bottom. Also a side note of cuteness is the gophers that may occasionally pop up around your yoga mat.

P.S. Um don't laugh but I STILL have yet to ACTUALLY HIKE Runyon. Lol.

Their Ad would read: MUST LOVE DOGS

This is a great spot to check out all the drooling cutie pies, with or without a leash. If All Dogs Go To Heaven, this might be where they go!

I love a good hike, and this is a great BUT short hike. The loop is about 1 mile long and you can go either direction. I like to go up the stairs and work my lady humps. Since its short, I do it twice.

On a nice day the views are hazy but pretty. You can see the Hollywood sign off to your left, as well as downtown, and then Palos Verdes and Santa Monica to your right.

Its always 10 degrees hotter here than on the West side so bring sun block and soak up your fair share of Vitamin D.

Tourists love it here so much that they forget their hiking shoes. Entertaining none the less. It is nice to see people in LA out n about, hiking, healthy and happy.

So, I came here once with my workout partner and since finals are over I have been coming here almost every morning, is that kinda disgusting? Probs. But, let me explain; I take the trail that's basically the big circle and I alternate between going right or left (go up the stairs or down) and here's why I haven't gotten bored yet umm hello the views, they are truly insane and if you're new in town I would just go up here to smoke a bowl clear your head and look at the views, kidding that's illegal D: but they are beautiful none the less like, seriously where are you going to see a snowy mountain top and a beach at the same vista point CRAY CRAY.

Second reason I come here is MOTIVATION you have to be a total freak not to notice the insanely gorgeous people here like, if I'm hiking behind a coked out Hollywood anorexic with a Kim Kardashian arse I am way more likely to walk at a faster pace, duh.

Third, ENTERTAINMENT, walking pass people and hearing snippets of their conversation is the funniest thing in the world, like last hike I went on the two girls that  basically tailgated me were talking about their drunken slutty hipster girl issues and how one of them thought she got preggers from the hottie barista who works on Figueroa. Like omg it's like 2011's version of The Hills.

Note to writers; come here to get inspiration, my current boy toy who is an English Major comes out here with me to laugh at all the pretentious people here and writes his little hipster like blog when he gets home, as for me, being a Pre-Med student my self I don't get too inspired to go out and cure cancer or anything like that after a bit of cardio BUT I do have one of the best butts in my clincal courses, so to each their own but definitely come check this place out it if you haven't yet:]

One of my favorite off leash dog parks, more of a scenic fun walk than a work out- but both in the sunshine with a beautiful view of LA , SANS SMOG!

DUDE, PICK UP YOUR DOG SHIT, PA-LEEEASE!
AND IF YOU CAN'T CONTROL YOUR DOG, KEEP IT ON THE LEASH!

Frequented by young, hot, local, dog lovers...B-list stars, yoga goers on the front lawn, etc.
Parking blows though, walk or carpool if you can!

Love Runyon! Sure, it's not really "hiking," but the trails are clearly marked and if you take the hilly route, you get a pretty good work out in! I like that there are a lot of people, couples, children, dogs - this is a place I would feel safe coming all by myself. It is also very conveniently located, there is tons of free street parking, they offer snacks and water on an "honors system" (how does this not get depleted!?), and there are free yoga and boot camp classes (which I have yet to try but definitely want to!). Runyon is a real treat and I am so glad to have it so close to my house.

I love feeling fat, it really is the best.

Every morning I wake up with the goal of working out and if I actually get the motivation to put on sneakers, I like to head to Runyon since it is so close and makes me hate myself.  Wake up, beautiful day, shoes on, circle for parking, out of breathe, watch pregnant women pass me.  Yuck, why am I so slow, my lungs, is that a woman carrying her dog in a bjorn?

Every time I head out, I have the best intention.  I am angry with myself about 10 minutes in.  At minute 11 I promise I will workout more often.  At minute 20, I promise myself I will give up on life and become morbidly obese.  At the half way point I decide it isnt so bad, I should take the longer route, rarely does this happen.  Walking down the hill, I forget all my promises and think of the sandwich I will have for lunch.

So why am I a fan?  I really do feel good after finishing the hike.  It is the closest hike to my home.  Beautiful views, I feel super cool standing above the city and looking out.  There are bottles of water being sold at the entrance I enter on, it is on your honor, leave a dollar, take a bottle.

I promise, this weekend I am going to go.

I love to go to Runyon for a morning workout! As many people have said, the park is a great source of motivation and it has a little something for everyone.

The trails: If you enter on Vista, you're greeted with a left and slightly uphill route or a downhill trail that goes right to the Fuller entrance. If you take the left route, it's a nice paved uphill slope that will loop around. If you enter on Fuller, you're greeted with the steeper route which will take you to the "stairs." I don't know what kind of behemoth you need to be to take these in stride, but let me tell you -- it kicks butt way more than any cardio machine you'll find at the gym. When you get to the top you are winded (or at least I was). Both trails meet at the top of the hill. You have the option to continue heading north towards Mulholland which is also a nicely paved road. Upon passing the stable and two beautiful horses, make a sharp left and head back towards the Vista/Fuller side for a nice hike which will take you on dusty, narrow trails which will test your balance and stamina.

The views: amazing. Need I say more? San Bernardino mountains to the left and the Pacific Ocean to the right. Downtown, Century City, Hollywood and Sunset Blvd's are all visible. Not to mention all of the beautiful homes in the hills and the Hollywood sign in plain view to your left. Bring a camera! Or when you make it to the top of the trails, take a seat on the tall tall bench (is everything made for 8 foot tall giants here?) and enjoy the scenery.

The peeps: an eclectic mix of personalities to say the least. Pretentious LA females and self-absorbed "West Coast Shore" males are more abundant than terrible drivers when you get an inch of rain in Southern California (not too much of a stretch, right?). Also there are tons of dogs, both leashed and unleashed. I've yet to come across one that is misbehaving; in fact, I've noticed dogs that carry their own water-bottles in their mouths!

Don't forget to bring a bottle of water with you and head up to Runyon for some fun cardio, you won't regret it.

DOG LOVERS BEWARE!! There are two animal control officers and two uniformed cops at Runyan giving out tickets for dogs off leash and no dog licenses. The officer lied to my face saying he saw my dog off leash- which she wasn't- as I stood in front of him with my dog on leash he said if I didn't take the ticket he would " impound my dog" and take her on site. I've been going to Runyan for years and never have I seen such an abuse of power- the tickets are upwards of $300.00. CA is desperate for money! Don't go to Runyan with your dog . My dogs are licensed and on leash even though this park claims it is off leash- YOU WILL STILL GET A TICKET even if you don't let your dog run free.

You know that smog that you always see hovering over the city? Yah, that one.  Apparently, you can touch it, lick it, massage it, do whatever you want to it at a cost of your legs and lungs.  Okay, by that I mean you need to hike your way up RCP and be rewarded with a 360 Panoramic View of LA!

Oh yes, the joy of hiking! No pain, No gain! Be one with nature, I say.  This is about as outdoorsy as I get--just part of my repertoire.  Hiking for the thrill of finding a great view and scenery.

Maybe you might run into some celebrities, but nonetheless, you'll have many opportunities to check-out flat, chiseled abs and other firm parts if you catch my drift.  If you're a dog person, this is the perfect spot to bring them!

    The QUICK and DIRTY:

    + The Drive-Up

Be prepared to shift gears! Park at a decline or incline.  Park as
close as possible to the entrance as residential side street is your
only option, once you park you get to "pre-hike" as you make your way
up to the grand front gate, very nice looking BTW

    + The TRAIL

Once you past the gate, you will have to choose between going
LEFT or RIGHT.  LEFT takes you to the very top.  RIGHT takes
you to a weaker spot.  If you want to reach the ultimate prize,
you need to steer LEFT.  It has many steep parts, you will
       sweat, so dress appropriately.

    + The VIEW

Awesome! If you steadily move up the trail, its not going to
take you that long to finally reach the top, its tough as nail
but with a little jogging, here and there, you can do it!
My advice is to jog when it gets really steep, it helps ease
stress on your feet, calves, and lower back

    + The TIME

Not that bad at all, it's relatively short if you just keep a steady
pace, once your done feasting your eyes on the epic view,
coming down is much quicker and easier, If you're a SNAIL, then
       2.5 hours, if you're a CHEETAH, then 45 minutes, if you're
AVG SHMOE, then 1.5 hours (Total)

I will MOST definitely do this AGAIN! I want to PLANK on the BENCH at the top!  I did not get to do that YET! haha!

Not that Runyon Canyon needs any MORE reviews, but...

I love it! I've been a few times now and have never seen misbehaving dogs, copious amounts of dog poo or obnoxious Guido type guys chattering on cell phones. Overall, a very fun/friendly crowd and you can live vicariously through everyone else's dogs if you're a dog lover (but not owner) like me. I love watching people try to hike and read scripts, or Chihuahuas bossing around Great Danes. There are some great views of LA at different points, downtown to your right, the ocean to the left.

    An LA institution!

I like coming here to get my cardio in. Some people like 'hiking' here although there is nowhere to hike. There is a pretty tough mountain to go up through but even that is still not considered a hike. It's pet friendly also:)
If you want a good cardio workout, go up that mountain. It'll kick your ass if that's something you don't do on the regular. My boyfriend runs it the whole way. I don't know how he does it. But proves it's definitely doable.

Had to jump on that cardio game so me and good friend Joe R. hit up Runyon Canyon park today to get a work out and soak in all the beautiful scenery and believe me it was all very beautiful wink wink.

The parking lot is small so you might have to park along the sides which the drive up there is on a single lane windy road. So there are several trails, we took a trail that was all down hill so I felt confident jogging down, but the trail back up was ridiculous but at least the back had huge wood steps. Yeah it was pretty difficult but I definitely look forward to coming back. What I love about this trail is the views, the beautiful motivation to get in shape and the work out.

If I lived in Los Angeles, I would come here all the time. I recently went on a hike here with my sister while visiting her and absolutely loved it. It's a beautiful trail and very well-groomed and clean, you get a good mix of sunshine and shade, it wasn't super crowded so we could go at our own pace, and gave me enough of a little workout to feel like I earned an In and Out Burger later ;-)

Also, the views of LA are unparalleled: if you're deciding between this and the Observatory, and you only have time for one I'd recommend Runyon.

ppperrfect for dogs! 45min walk hike. Great exercise and not the type where you exercise all the energy and appetite out of yourself.

Parking is a hassle via street. Very very very aggressive parkers and drivers around.

Path is simple. Lots of dogs off the leash, friendly but you probably need to like or not be bothered by dogs to go on this hike.

Doggie bags only at the beginning of the hike, but after there is none. Although there are random trash cans and bag places (empty).

View is great on a non-foggy place. Sign of Hollywood, and large view of LA. Ppl down in the apt area sell bananas, random snacks and water haha

Came on a weekend and there were plenty of people here. More than enough.

Fun free thing to do when visiting LA, are in the Hollywood area, and need to burn off some calories from too much good food!

We heard about this from another tourist we were talking to and since I was already decked out in runners and Lululemon, we thought this was a fun way to kill some time.

We used the Fuller Street entrance which is a few blocks uphill from Hollywood Blvd.  I definitely recommend the party towards the right  (Star trail) for the best balance of working out but still being fun.  Take the path on the left if you're not a fan of steep uphills.

Amazing views as you go up of the city and the Hollywood sign.  Even as the sun is setting, this is a super well traveled area so I felt very safe.  Fun people watching here!

I love to hike with my dog but this place is too crowded and smells like dog pee. We have only been here a handful times b/c we prefer Griffith Park. It's a good workout but you can smell the urine as soon as you park your car and it's pretty gross.

What's not to like about this place?!  Well, the dogs off leashes...but that's the ONLY thing not to like.

It's a 5 minute drive from most neighborhoods in LA and you feel like you're in the mountains somewhere an hour away.  The views are beautiful (both of the city and some of the other hikers).  They truly inspire you to keep moving.  :-)

I also love the free yoga and the honor table that is set up with snacks and water.

    This place is quintessentially LA.

I wish I'd found this place when I first moved here. Always heard people talking about it, never quite made it there until last week. Disappointed in myself, had I ventured out sooner I'd likely be in better shape by now. It's a fun way to workout.

Parking can be a challenge, but honestly it's not all that bad. You're coming here for exercise, at least in part... is it really a big deal to park a few blocks further from the entrance?

I have a love/hate relationship with all of the dogs that are brought here to the park. The smell at the entrance is not cute. But it seems that every dog here is super-friendly, so it's fun to be around them... as long as they stay out from underfoot. Some are better at that than others, and owners really should consider leashing their dogs if they're going to be tripping up people constantly.

It's a good workout, a great view of the city. I love that some entrances have water and snacks in a cart. Definitely something to bring a tourist to see, if they're in-shape... and obviously a good workout if you're a local. Good times.

I want to be famous, get discovered, and be a trendy Angelino so I go to Runyon.

A great place to view the beauty of Los Angeles (no that's not an oxymoron)  and to get a great cardio workout.  Three different courses, a nice set of stairs, a challenging hill, and great views of the LA basin.

Parking is horrid though, so be prepared to park and hike to the Park, but that can be your warm up.

Nice for a Saturday morning, or a Sunday evening place to get out of the house and grab some fresh air and to break a sweat.

Runyon Canyon is a beautiful place to go for a hike. I say hike, because although some people seem to think there isn't much of a workout to be had here, I beg to differ. We entered from the Fuller Avenue entrance, where there is a honor table with snacks and water. It would be nice if there were maps here, too, because folks that are new to the trail (like me) could really use them.

We took the trail to the right first, which was a mistake for out of shape new hikers. We got as far as the spot where you can check out the view of the city, but thought it best to turn around because the next part of the trail was a pretty steep hill that looked like it might kill us dead. We headed back down to the entrance and took the trail to the left, which was a better workout for newbies. There are maps online, but it is hard to understand them until you are actually there.

On the Saturday morning that we went, the place was filled with people of all fitness levels and tons of dogs, and smells and sights that go with dogs. So if you don't like dogs, don't go to this park. But if you like people watching, beautiful views and a good workout, definitely visit Runyon Canyon.

Absolutely loved this hike! It's literally a hike or should I say climb up to the top!  I recently got into hiking and yes this was a difficult hike but it was so much fun. I've had hiking friends say this place is to "hipster" for them but I didn't see that when.I went.  Lots of people take their dogs but it isn't over whelming. Nice atmosphere great surroundings. When you make it to the very top which most ppl don't it makes you feel like rocky at the top of the steps lol. It's really hard to find a bathroom there so take care of business before you leave and at the entrance there is a cart with recreational food and water. You just be respectful and throw a dollar in tthe basket if u grab anything. Can't wait to go climb the canyon again!

The only dislike (-star) I have about Runyon is the parking. I usually end up parking several blocks away, which isn't really a bad idea since I get a pre-work-out-warmup trying to get to the entrance on Fuller anyway. I have waited and driven around for up to 35 minutes on several occasions...

I see several people running up the trail here, but I enjoy a fast-paced walk, which still kicks my ass and works the sweat everytime. Include the occasional darting to avoid dog droppings and mud here and there and you get an above-average workout. Yeah, boyeeee.

The view is pretty far-out up there. It shows the beautiful and earthy side of LA. Not to mention, the beautiful people. Seriously, lots of hothothot men & women here. Definitely strikes up a motiviation.

On the Fuller entrance, there is a mini concessions stand with power bars, water, and other snacks. I've seen a man standing there and selling these several times, but often times, he's not there. You can use the 'courtesy drop-box' to pay for whatever you take.

Bring your dog(s)! There are dog bowls provided here and there for your thirsty/hungry critters. A word of advice to keep a friendly and clean environment: Get some pooper scooper bags from the front of the apartment down the street and pick up after your pets!

    Negatives:
    Parking is packed on weekends
    Dog poopie is everywhere

    Positives:
Nice man sets up a stand with snacks/water for free if you follow the honor system
    Good view from the top
    Trails are wide

    Tips for a good time:
If you head left initially, you will go up the mountain and either make a left or a right at the fork.  Going left, you will end up at the top of the mountain with a nice 360 degree view of the area.  Going right, you will end up at the most awesome bench you will see in your life and a view of downtown LA/hollywood sign.

If you head right from the beginning you will take the hard way up and it is the best for a workout.  You will later reach the giant bench as mentioned earlier.  DO IT.
