So If you're searching for a BBQ place around Austin and came across Rudy's, then you've already seen their high ratings. All these people can't be wrong right? Well they're not so if you're having a hankering for some ribs, brisket, or sausage this place is a great go to location for BBQ. This place could arguable earn 5/5 stars from me but I went with 4/5 because I truly LOVE the sauce from another BBQ location which will remained unnamed.
Due to it's popularity, there's generally a line but it tends to move fast so don't be discouraged if you walk in during the lunch hour or on a weekend and see a line. When I come here, I usually get the "cutter's choice" brisket, pork ribs, and the cream corn. THE CREAM CORN IS A MUST! It's also lovingly referred to as "crack corn" because once you sample a little bit, you're hooked.
I can't say that I've ever had a bad experience from this Rudy's location. If you're in the area or visiting Austin it's a definite venue to check out.
Cheers
Breakfast review!!!!
Ate Rudy's breakfast tacos for the first time today! It's 3 hours later and I'm still full! I have to say the egg and spicy chopped brisket is incredible! Egg and sausage is decent, but I personally prefer breakfast style sausage in my eggs. The sausage is finely chopped Rudy's sausage links. There's a whole selection to mix and match: the previously mentioned + potatoes, bacon, cheese, beans and even fresh jalapenos!
These are so inexpensive, too! I believe around a $1.64 for two fillings and .45 for each additional. Three different salsas are offered as well! You can order at the counter for more exotic mix and match options or pick them up pre-made on the convenience store side.
As usual the customer service was top notch on both the BBQ side and convenience store side. I'll be back there for more tacos soon!!!

Jalapeno sausage here it great. I always get a "whole hottie" when I order! And probably one of the… Read more »
Where can I get gas, pick up a pack of gum, AND enjoy a nice brisket, you ask? Rudy's! I will admit that I thought the concept was narsty, but a friend forced me to try. First of all, as they pack up your delicious crate of food, they ask you how everything looks. I wished they would have asked me that the last time I went to Mama Fu's and they gave me fried instead of steamed dumplings.
I digress. Second, you can get as many condiments as you want. I haven't seen that kind of service since Roy Rogers fast food closed down in my home town. Have you seen the mega-container of BBQ sauce??? It's fantastic.
Third, the hand-washing station in the back is pure genius. Enough said.
Finally, and this is important, THE TURKEY IS AWESOME. Get the turkey. The turkey is delicious. Did I tell you how good the turkey is? Don't hate like I did and miss out on some delicious and cheap BBQ.
At this location, it's a convince store (like all locations) with very limited parking. Their brisket is good and so is the turkey, but their BBQ sauce is the best. The prices are a little high if you plan to eat alone, since they sell all the meat by the pound. Overall, good place to eat BBQ on the run.
After lunch at Vic's, five of us selected Rudy's for the evening meal. We waded through the ordering process and ended up with brisket (wet), baby back ribs, St Louis style ribs, turkey, regular sausage and jalapeno sausage.
The brisket had very mild smoke. Our particular piece was laced with the clear "jelly" stuff that can sometimes appear in meat. This was not fat. It looks more like gristle, but was not tough. It seemed to make the meat very rich. It was tender and moist. Again, no one's socks were knocked off. I am of the opinion that these one-trip reviews don't offer a valid sampling. We all know that there are several factors that determine the quality of brisket. How long has your slab been out of the pit? Did you get the first slices or has it been cut for a while and lost a lot of its juice? Was it a good piece of meat to start with? If I lived in Austin, I would "force" myself to make repeat visits to be able to draw a more statistically sound conclusion. All I can do here is report what we experienced on that one evening.
The ribs had almost no smoke flavor. There was some smoke ring, but I could not taste it. We all agreed, the spare ribs and the baby backs were not worth going back for. They just tasted like roasted pork instead of smoke or barbeque.
The sausage had a tough casing. A lot of people talk about "snap" in their reviews. There is no way you could get this to snap. The regular had a mild, pleasant flavor and the jalapeno flavor showed in the jalapeno link. Texture of the meat was good. Overall OK but not remarkable.
The turkey was decent. It looked dry, but was not. Smoke was again, pretty mild.
The sides were all, OK, but again, not remarkable. The potato salad was pretty creamy, with some yellow mustard. The slaw was a fine chop, creamy dressing with sweetness. The creamed corn is a definite "avoid" as is the tasteless banana pudding.
The place is pretty commercial and lacks the charm of some of the little places we visited in the surrounding towns. I would give them another chance if I were a local and would have the brisket and turkey. I would go for lunch to be sure them eat is fresh out of the pit.
Damn you mouth watering Brisket. Don't you know what I have to go through when I consumed a pound of you. My first experience of Texas BBQ and did not disappoint.
-Delicate slices of cow meat oozing with fat and bbq sauce, check.
- Charred black bits with heighten flavor intensity, check.
- futuristic machine to wash you hands in, check (seriously they have one).
I devoured all my food in about 3 minutes. I love Texan food, and the people ain't bad too.
Okay, I seriously don't think it gets any better than this. The restaurant is really simple, you go up to the counter, tell them what you want, they weigh it all out, and give it to you in a tray. You then find a table and start chowing down. Barbecue should always be this simple!
The extra moist brisket is awesome and it's only about $6 for each 1/2 lbs. When you combine it with onions and pickles and put it on white bread with their sauce, it's heaven.
Another plus is if you're there in the morning you can grab a breakfast taco as well for about $2.50, you get the best of Texas all in one spot. Definitely come here if you want a real barbecue meal that's also real cheap.
Barbecue? Yes.
Mother-in-law was in town and wanted some BBQ. After consulting yelp for BBQ restaurants in the area, decided to check out Rudy's.
First, it's kinda hard to miss because its part of a gas station. We passed it the first time, having a hard time believing there was good food behind the Shell pectin. Yes, I did fill up before eating.
We ordered the moist brisket, St. louis ribs, and a link of jalapeno sausage along with cream corn and baked beans. Each order comes with a half loaf of white bread and, don't freat, they also have a sauce/onion/pickle bar.
The brisket was the unanimous favorite. Everything was moist and tender. All of the food was great.
The restaurant features "backyard" seating which consists of inside, inside/outside, and outside seating. Food is served in a plastic crate wrapped in butcher paper.
Nothing fancy, nothing spectacular. But with a Shiner in one hand, and a piece of brisket in the other... yeah, no complaining.
It is not the best bbq I've had. But its not bad by any means.
I use yelp to help me find new places but at the same time I use it to gauge my own experiences.
My recent trip back to Austin has made realized what I define as the BEST BBQ. I grew up eating BBQ, but I became addicted once I had THIS RUDY'S. Yes I know it's a chain but this particular location holds the title of BEST BBQ.
I am not a professional critic, neither are most of the people on yelp but I have been searching high and low for a place that makes me shaking like a crack fiend.
I enjoy their BBQ so much I went twice on a 3 day trip.
What makes me coming back time and time again?
First, their extra moist brisket. I order about 1/2 lb to a 1 lb myself everytime I come to Austin. It is the best cooked brisket ever. It has the perfect rub on the outside and cooked to perfect with the right about of flavor on the outside and right kind of juicy tenderness inside. As much as I love the sauce I often times don't even bother since the brisket is so good.
Second, the ribs. So I am always looking for a good rub vs tenderness. This has been the ONLY place that combines the two. The St. Louis ribs are small and packed full of flavor. A 1/2 lb will get you about 4 ribs. This is just the right amount for me.
Third, the sauce. Other locations I have seen a sissy or a normal sauce. But this place only offers ONE. And this is where it's at. The sauce has the perfect blend of sweetness and hotness.
Finally, the thing that heartattacks are made of: the cream corn, or I once described it as "a cup of heaven". I used to eat a whole pint by myself then I realized I'm getting older and metabolism can't keep up, but I still get a small cup because it's just so GOOD.

Just as good as the northside location. A little closer to campus too.
I'm not a big meat-eater, and coming here changes my time EVERY time. Granted, I have been eating Rudy's BBQ since I was a kid. Now, finally a BIG GIRL and driving near the one off of 360, I realize I have NEVER (at least in my poor memory) remember actually EATING inside of Rudy's.
Let me tell you, when they offer you samples of all the various cuts of meat they have, they mean serious business.
Besides the brisket, I am sold on the quality of a BBQ joint by the sides. They have your typical slaw and potatoes and whatnot, but also the rather unusual offerings of creamed corn (OH YUM) and banana pudding (double YUM).
Top 3 BBQ in the city...maybe the state. Definitely the best creamed corn.
What can you say about Rudy's? Great BBQ, moderately priced and a great atmosphere to boot! The 360 location is by far and away my favorite. Parking can sometimes be a little hectic, but it helped when thy added the "parking lot on a hill" several years back.
I'm a creature of habit, and I prefer the extra moist brisket and the regular sausage links most of the time. But you can't go wrong with their half chicken -- it's so good as long as it's not overcooked (which I've unfortunately landed a few times). I'm not really a fan of the turkey, though it's not terrible. The ribs on the other hand are just no good to me. Don't know what it is, but I could care less for the ribs. The cream corn is to die for! Potato salad is what potato salad should be, beans aren't bad either.
I still think Salt Lick is hands down the best BBQ in Texas, but I think Rudy's edges out the Lick when it comes to the brisket.
The thing about Rudy's is, it's good BBQ, it's easily accessible, there's rarely too long of a wait, they have Mexican Coke and great sweet tea and it's always consistently good. Plus, the 360 location has a beautiful outdoor seating area where you can bring your kids and dog to play!
Everyone I've ever taken to Rudy's has always left impressed with the quality and tastiness of the BBQ. It's just so good and convenient!!
*** ADDED BONUS ***
Rudy's has killer breakfast tacos -- I just always forget to go there on the weekends!
All right y'all, simmer down now. BBQ can be a pretty personal issue, I'll admit, and loyalties to BBQ joints can be as die-hard and nasty as Texas football rivalries! But seriously, Rudy's has some of the best BBQ this side of I-35, you've gotta admit! And there's something for everyone, between the "lean cut" and the "extra moist", the cole slaw and the potato salad, the pork and the chicken. They've even got banana pudding - now how can you knock that? And for the sauce-obsessed, they have a really nice sauce too! It's not super sweet, but it has just a touch of kick to put some zing in your 'que. I get it by the bucket-load and just drench my food in it!
What may be the "bonus" about this Rudy's is the fact that there's a HUGGGGGGGGGE outdoor area in the back - perfect for letting your kids run amok while the adults throw back some Lone Star and chat 'til it gets dark outside. I refuse to have BBQ any other way, if I can. :)
How could you not like Rudy's? It's so po-dunk, white trashy that it's perfect. I mean, all BBQ places should look like this. Come on, the restaurant is connected to a gas station! And, they pile everything out on industrial crates and use wax papers for plates. Love it.
The food is fairly cheap as far as BBQ goes. If you're a fan of brisket, then you know better than to get anything but the 'moist brisket', which is only fifty cents more/lbs. Amazing. I wasn't a big fan of their baby back ribs... it should have fallen off the bone a bit better. Their BBQ sauce is nothing to write home about, but it's good nonetheless.
What they're known for is their cream corn! It's like heaven in a cup. It's so bad for you, I'm sure... which is why it's so good for you!!!!
Great experience, good food, good times. Still, Saltlick BBQ is better (sorry).
I know, i've reviewed Rudy's before, and NO, I do not intend to go around giving every Rudy's 5-stars... only the ones I've been to! In this case, this location is the latest I've visited, and I missed Rudy's dearly since I moved out of Texas. FUN FACT: this was also my first Rudy's.
This time, however, my taste-buds are far more sophisticated. Through the course of my recent epic cross-country trip (http://KananAcrossAmer...) I have experienced other BBQs, Southern, Carolina-style, Midwestern, heck even transplant-Texan, you name it, I've tried it, and I'm ready to declare Rudy's THE BEST BRISKET AND SAUSAGE IN AMERICA. And you know me, I'm not one for superlatives.
There's no beating the extra-moist brisket, accompany that with half a link of sausage (regular is better than jalapeño IMO), add some cream corn, and that's a 5-star meal folks, all for around $12!
Everything here is great and picking up dinner is usually fast and convenient. The lean brisket is my favorite and they also have delicious chicken. The peppery barbecue sauce is the best and the side dishes are all pretty solid. Only downfall is having to pay for your jalapenos :)
This is the best BBQ place i have been to the whole three years i've lived in Texas. Nowhere can beat the Extra Moist Brisket. In fact it's so GOOD, and the OTHER TYPES of brisket so UN-MOIST and, well, DRY, that you'd be a sucker to try any other kind. It melts in your mouth and your palate experiences multiple orgasms. Just don't think about your arteries.
The sausage is also amazing and juicy with flavorful fat, as is the chicken which is unbelievably moist, tender and falling off the bone. Same for the ribs.
My boyfriend and i would do day trips in which we drove from Houston to Austin just to stuff our faces with Rudy's delicious, fatty BBQ. We'd buy $30 worth (each!) eat as much as we could there, and then take the rest home with us. The leftovers never made it past the next day's breakfast.
We've even seriously considered having our weddingin Austin just so we could have Rudy's cater at the reception.
Also, i don't know about the other Rudy's joints in Austin, but we've tried one in Spring, TX which was terrible, one in Frisco, TX that was not as bad as the one in Spring, but still not good, and one in New Braunfels, TX that just alright. I don't remember the New Braunfels location because it was a long time ago, but i can say with certainty that the ones in Spring and Frisco DO NOT offer the extra moist brisket. Plus, all of the BBQ at the other three were dry and not at all tender.
This is a little out of the way from Downtown Austin, but well worth the drive. It's actually closer than the location on Research Blvd.
Chelsea gave me a gastronomic tour with the: extra moist brisket, turkey, cream corn, and new potatoes. I would recommend the extra moist brisket, cream corn, and new potatoes, but not the turkey.
The St. Louis Ribs here are surprisingly better than the Baby Back Ribs.
The extra moist brisket was heaven melting in my mouth. The barbecue sauce was so delicious I wish I had bought a bottle to take home.
Get the regular sized ice tea in a plastic cup and keep refilling it to wash down all that wonderful meat!
So, I got half a pound of extra moist brisket, a side of new potatoes, and a regular iced tea for only TEN DOLLARS! Where else can you get such a great deal? Definitely not California.
Oh man, I love Texas.
I'm a huge fan of their turkey breast, pickles, and "sause".
I even buy the turkey on a weekly basis for sandwiches throughout the week. It's extremely healthy too - 200 calories for half a POUND!
They're also one of the few (only?) BBQ places with nutrition info on their website.
The sides are so good as well- creamed corn, cole slaw. mmmm.
they have mexican sodas too with real cane sugar.
one of my favorite BBQ places in Austin.
3 words: Extra Moist Brisket
Juicy, succulent, and smokey, it melts in your mouth. I have tried many BBQ joints in this great state of Texas, but have yet to find a brisket that matches Rudy's.
I love me some Rudy's. See, I'm not even country and Rudy's makes me country. Say it with me ya'll... I love me some Rudy's.
Great no frills atmosphere... the fact that its attached to a gas station is part of its charm. We went with a big group so we ordered a bunch a meat - the extra moist brisket is the best, the lean brisket is pretty good, "hottie" sausage superb and the regular smoked sausage is pretty darned good. Try 'em all with some white bread, pickles, onions and slather on the BBQ and you got yourself a meal. So good you don't even need sides, but if you must try the cream corn. YUM. And save room for some banana pudding - the best I've ever tried.
I love the food at Rudy's. I think their brisket, jalapeno sausage and turkey are better here than the myriad of other BBQ places available all over Austin. I live within walking distance of a couple of those 'other' places (Stubb's, Iron Works) yet I make the drive out to Rudy's time and time again. I also love their spicy BBQ sauce and use it at home as well as sending it out to out of town family members as gifts. My personal preference is that I like this type of sauce better than the more vinegar based sauce available at the Salt Lick.
The potato salad and banana pudding are also very delicious and I for one am a big fan of beer or soda made available in a glass bottle - it just tastes better. And a cold beverage with the hot BBQ; sometimes that just hits the spot exactly.
I don't go to BBQ places for frills and that's good because Rudy's is definitely not the place for that. You get whatever you order thrown on butcher paper in a plastic tray with some white bread out of the bag and you serve yourself pickles, onions, etc. Just find yourself some paper towels out of the dispensers, sit down at one of the picnic tables and enjoy.
This place is the worst nightmare of many of my dearest (they even have a gigantic sign that says "real people eat meat") but when you're in Texas and you want barbecue. this is what we gotta do.
The sauce was a bit too sweet for my taste, but the ribs & brisket were spectacular: I followed the lead of my Southern pals, didn't order sides and instead just learned the way of the bbq white bread sandwich with pickles and onions, which made the sweetness of the sauce tolerable. I spied a banana pudding, which I'd never had before and immediately had to buy it. It was a gamble that paid off; I was rewarded with the creamiest tastiest most wonderful combination of vanilla and banana maybe, ever.
Texas makes me hyperbolic, but this was really good. Trust.
I'm from Los Angeles and I travel across the southwest for work, and let me tell you, there is no better place for BBQ.
If you like moist meat and don't mind a lil fat, you have to get the moist brisket. Put it on a piece of bread with pickles and their famous BBQ sauce an you'll be hooked as well. I also recommend their creamed corn. This place is cheap and delicious. Try it if you are ever in the area.
I like, I like. It's not the Salt Lick, but it still beats the pants off of 85% of other bbq joints out there. Cafeteria style bbq, right down to the communal tables, tastes of this and tastes of that not only possible, but encouraged, and cheap as hell. Really, what's not to like?
The turkey and the jalapeno links are the big standouts here for me, but everything is pretty good. The turkey is moist, juicy and super smokey and the jalapeno link is properly juicy with great snap and bite, very unique. I like to get a big sampler and get a bit of this and a bit of that. If something strikes me as particularly good, I'll get a larger portion to go on my way out. Brisket is solid, but a bit fatty and bland for my taste, I prefer more smoke and bark. Their very good bbq sauce goes a long way towards improving the flavor. The ribs are truly excellent and worth a trip here just for them. Traditional white bread, pickles, and onions come with.
Sides are good across the board, I'm particularly fond of the pinto beans. Great sweet tea and cobbler too. A very solid choice for bbq without having to drive out to the Salt Lick.
Hands down one of the best BBQ places around, and Texas has many a great place to choose from but this one stands above most other "BBQ" in town.
Located in what used to be a farm barn, this place is no frills and all about meat. They serve by weight not by plate and it comes out pretty cheap when compared to other places. The flavor of their meats is none less than amazing - even the turkey breast has nice texture and moisture to it. The restaurant is very casual - you walk up to the register, tell the guy what do you want and how much of it (in pounds :-)) and then grab your crate with your order (they use crates instead of trays) and find yourself a place to seat. Very simple yet efficient and the line (if there is a line) moves very quickly.
This place is great for a group lunch or dinner or for a casual "meating" with friends. If you are ever in Austin and crave for a great BBQ - this place is a no-brainer.
I almost punched my friend in the arm for suggesting Rudy's when we pulled in to a gas station that shared it's location with Rudy's. Surely, this couldn't be good BBQ.
But it was so good! They asked if I had been there before and upon finding out that I hadn't, I was presented with different types of meet and creamed corn to try out before deciding. The extra moist brisket was phenomenal. I would just eat it as-is and forget putting it on the Wonder Bread slices they give you for a sandwich -- yuck!
The creamed corn was okay -- I have no idea what the creamy part is. Pudding? It's weird and I don't remember my creamed corn ever being served like that.
Very casual place to hang out. Our meals were served on butcher paper within a plastic crate. I'd go back -- I loved the BBQ.
I'm sure this has been said, but despite the fact that it's an out-of-town chain, Rudy's may be the best (at least on a consistent basis) barbecue in Austin. People just have to let go of the idea that some mom and pop, smaller, local place just HAS to be better. Because it's not.
Pros:
- Great brisket (I prefer the "moist" brisket, which means fattier. But all of the brisket has that delicious black charred part on the outside that is oh so tasty.)
- Great sides (The beans are super peppery, have bacon in them, and are the best I've had anywhere. The potato salad is yellow but heavily mayonnaise-based. It's creamy goodness the likes of which you will find no where else. The cream corn is mostly cream with some corn floating in it. If that grosses you out, I understand, but it's pretty damn good.)
- Best barbecue sauce anywhere (This is largely just a matter of preference, but I like really spicy peppery sauce and Rudy's is that. If you don't like spicy sauce, they have a "Sissy" version that is doable.)
- Rudy's is a gas station and convenience store too (if you somehow missed that). That's pretty damn convenient.
Cons:
- You have to buy jalapenos? Really? (Not all Rudy's are like this. This comes from loose franchise rules that result in different Rudy's selling vs. giving away various things. For instance, the one in Lubbock doesn't charge you for jalapenos and the original one in San Antonio charges you for everything.)
- The fake excited people that ask you whether you've been to Rudy's before and then scream "We've got a virgin!" when someone says no. (I hate this kind of crap. I want pleasant helpful service, no bad attitudes, no fake enthusiasm required by mgmt. Just an honest effort to make my experience enjoyable.)
BBQ! I so loved them in the past, but less so now. I do BBQ once in a while, maybe when I really miss the smoked meat flavor, but more is for our visitors coming out of town. I am so glad you can find a good BBQ place so easily and so affordable in Austin. Rudy's definitely the place! This very country style dining experience is kinda fun.
However, BBQ-ed meat is really so bad for your health!
Awesome food, service and people. They let you try before you buy to see what is tasting good when you get there. I would go here everyday if I could. The people at the counter are nice and know what they are talking about.
This Rudy's is a little hard to find but worth the trip.
Extra moist brisket + Creamed corn + Sweet tea? omg so good..I could eat this all day. The sausage is pretty good too, but extra moist brisket is a must. I seriously think I might die of a heart attack by the time I'm 30..
I can't remember the first time I visited a Rudy's, but I knew I couldn't wait til my family visited Austin again to eat here.
It's an awesome place to hang out with a group of friends and family, I love everything about it. Definitely a good place to go after visiting the Green Belt or Mount Bonnell. If you feel too full after eating, the mall is right around the corner and you can get your exercise there!
I have yet to go to Salt-Lick's so I can't compare it to that, but I love both Rudy's and Goode Company BBQ!
Imagine 12 artists, gallery owners, and interior designers from Los Angeles, crammed into three yellow cab vans, driving to the boondocks at 9:30pm for a "tasty and traditional TX BBQ experience", pulling up to a gas station? Exactly...it's a scene from a movie! Their faces dropped, the suspicion grew and as the cabs took off, you couldn't miss the look of panic in their eyes or the unanimous unvocalized thought of "what the hell?"
Love it! Love the unassuming country mart/rib shop behind the gas station, love the smell of smoked meat and the sweet tang of BBQ sauce that greets you, love the excellent service and the free samples of everything, and the fact that this group of people rocked the rib joint to the wee hours laughing, drinking, and having a grand old time.
When they say Texans do it BIG, believe it. Slabs of ribs, wet or dry brisket, sausage, roast chicken, sliced turkey, bushels of creamed corn, buttered potatoes, cole slaw, potato salad, peppery beans, and plates of dill pickles, sliced onions, and oh, don't forget the good old fashioned sliced white bread LOAF. Think white trash wonder bread.
Why Rudy's? Because the other top BBQ joints in Austin (County Line, Salt Lick, Iron Works, and Lamberts) couldn't or most likely wouldn't accommodate our group.
Food was tasty, very smokey and the sauce on the peppery side. I enjoyed the St. Louis pork ribs. Personally, I don't get the creamed corn, but most of the group had their faces in it like pigs at a trough. I liked the steamed buttered potatoes, and the retro dill pickle but I honestly missed some good old fashioned veggies/salad to help cut the large amounts of meat, mayo, and sauce that was before us.
The bottled soda/beer selection is vast, the banana and chocolate puddings -- ehh, but the staff was patient and generous in allowing us to see and taste (straight out of the smoker) every meat option and sample every side. You order at the counter, then go sit at one of many large picnic tables complete with your own personal brown paper placemat and paper towel machine. Never mind the napkins here.
A fun time was had for all. A definite recommendation for the ambiance and experience all around.
Where I come from, restaurants that are connected to gas stations or food that came from any vicinity near a gas station is to be avoided at *all* costs (ever heard of the Pump 'n' Munch? I rest my case). However, maybe it's because this is Texas, but Rudy's has made me realize my error in that way of thinking. Oh Lord, I am a believer.
I've been a couple times over the years (thanks to my longtime gal pal, Louise F. of Austin). I'm especially a fan of that breakfast taco. You can't shake a stick at breakfast that only costs $1.64 and keeps you full until mid-afternoon.
Creamed Corn of my childhood still makes me retch thinking about it. I was so scared to try Rudy's creamed corn but I thought "what the hell, I haven't had a good vomit since last Friday night". One spoonful and I was hooked. Yummy yummy yummy. I have dreams about that creamed corn. I would marry it if I could.
Now on to the BBQ. It's pretty good. I am a fan of good BBQ and to be totally honest I have not been impressed with Texas BBQ. I have been to Lockhart ( BBQ capital of Texas) and was mildly disappointed after all the hype. Rudy's is just as good and there is no drive. I prefer the pulled pork and moist brisket. The ribs are okay. I really love the giant love of Sunbeam white bread they give you. Plus you can load up all the pickles, onions and jalapenos you could possibly want. The potato salad and cole slaw is okay but I keep a stomach reserved for the corn. Buttermilk pie was gross and I will be trying the banana pudding on my next visit.
Long live Rudy's creamed corn!
Rudy's is by far one of the most unique places in Austin. When I first moved here many years ago I always passed a gas station that said the worst BBQ in Texas...and I thought to myself I wonder if it is. So needless to say it was very much like one of those "this taste gross, check it out" situations and much to my tummy's delight it was wonderful. I frequent this particular Rudys as its close to my house and never crazy packed. I personally enjoy tons of turkey with some lean brisket. For sides you can't go wrong with their potato salad and beans. If you can still fit anything in your stomach after eating all that food, there is wonders to be found in chocolate Oreos and banana pudding. The staff is always friendly, funky, and funny. To end your journey stop by the automatic hand washers, perfect for people covered to their elbows in BBQ sauce love.
One last thing, if you are hungry for breakfast they also have super sweet tacos of all types for your consumption. Where I work they always order large assortments but you can't go wrong with any of these from what I've tasted.
Ok, anyone who rates Rudy's 3 stars or less is an irrelevant douche bag that I would never want to take me out to eat.
Not that Rudy's is the most delicious in the world; it is consistency and a combination of a few small things that allow me to say "yes" to every invitation I receive. That and they've never let me down after NUMEROUS visits.
I order "half a hottie, 1/3lb of porkloin, and a small drink" or some variation of those items depending on the varying degree of hunger every visit.
1. You pick your portion (doesn't matter if you order by the slice or by the pound)
2. You can never have too many Rudy's to-go cups in your home.
3. The sides are delicious.
4. Bathroom and cleaning facilities are to be exemplified.
...And to anyone that says Rudy's is terrible...choke chode cocksucker.
This place is damn good for what it is... A big ole gas station on the side of a road headed no where of interest for me. It just happens to be on the way to the hill of life, where I take the dog to run and get tired... So, on the way home, I pull the u-turn to get us to Rudy's. It's worth it. Will I make a special trip out there just for Rudy's? Prolly not, but, this place is still great.
It lacks the charm of the in town places that I like such as Lambert's or Iron Works. What it lacks in charm it makes up for in meat. Damn, good, meat. They offer many cuts of brisket which is nice and a couple of different types of ribs. At least St. Louis and baby back. I had the brisket, St. Louis and baby backs. They were all good. The brisket was not overly smokey or fatty. It was simple but very good and moist. The ribs were not the fall off the bone type which is good because I consider that overcooked. They were firm, chewey, flavorful and yummy. The sauce is good too. More of a traditional thick sauce.
To sum it up? Good food with no surprises.
Their condiment bar is awesome, even for take out, you can take all you want.
The staff is AWESOME. They let you try everything and are totally patient as you hem and haw over what you want to order. For me, the staff is what took this place from 3 stars to 4. That and you can buy gas there too...
Oooooh baby. I will piss off many of my Veggie friends here. Look at the context though.
Before I became a Vegetarian, I use to be a murderer. I used to eat dead animals. The muscles and body parts of cows, pigs, and birds. When I used to eat the carcass of animals I had my favorites. Rudy's this review is for you!
I will simply say that when dead muscle of a cow is being cooked I do salivate. I mean if it smelled bad to me it would smell bad to everyone. People eat meat because it taste and smells good. So get that out of the way. I just dont eat it anymore because of personal love to life.
Now when it comes to Bar-B-Q, Rudy's is on point son! Like Whoa!
I remember the slabs of meat, the beans, the patatos, and yummo cream corn. Damn muther effer I love that stuff! Long tables and great Sweet Tea! The serving?
Sheets of waxed paper! What!?
Sheets of waxed paper! Like, Word?
Sheets of waxed paper! Thats mad Bar-B-Q for you!
Rudy's please stop the violence of killing. But you sure serve up the best.
Can you say 'Paradox'? or 'Contradiction'?
Vegetarian for Rudy's!
Thats me! : )
The cattle prod hanging above the beverage cooler maze could be my favorite kitchy restaurant gimmick I have ever seen. Break glass incase the line is moving too slow. I also enjoy the choice of beverages from local brews to soda in glass bottles as you wait to get to the meat order station. The cutter cam that is shown on a tv above the sides/dessert fridge is also fun. I have been coming to Rudy's in various locations for about 8 years and each time it is the same delicious BBQ you can't get anywhere else. Chain-schmame, I don't care if there were as many of these as McDonald's in TX. The cafeteria style and choices of meats are all done to what this NYer feels are BBQ perfection. I have had my fair share of BBQ throughout the US and I can never find Brisket done as well as it is done here. The "sause" is delicious, not necessarily my favorite, but still has the right spice.
We dined on Brisket (Cutter's choice) which was moist and melt in your mouth yummy, ribs (St. Louis cut) and turkey. The white bread and pickles were always appreciated as the perfect accompaniment to the Q. I tend to make a messy sammy of coleslaw, meat and sauce which from TX stand point is a destruction of perfect meat. But I love it! And I love Rudy's.
I will never miss a trip to Rudy's while in Austin as it has never disappointed. I love the combo gas station, convenient store, BBQ paradise.
1/3 of Americans are obese and 1/3 are overweight. BUT WHO THE EFF CARES WHEN YOU HAVE RUDY'S BBQ IN TOWN?
Fatty brisket all the way. That brisket is so moist that a dying sand venturer of the deserts could survive off one piece. The jalapeno sausage is great also. Turkey is a good option for those that want to eat healthy but why even try when you're at a BBQ place??!??!
Also they have huge tubs of bbq sauce everywhere which is awesome because you can never ever have enough bbq sauce...ever. :)
The desserts are good too. Me and two other friends bought one oreo pudding and one banana pudding to share and we finished them off in a jiffy. My friends were so addicted they ended up buying another banana pudding each to scarf down again. The banana pudding has real bits of banana baked in so if you're into bananas, that's the way to go.
Also they have this nifty automatic hand washer thing. It feels really weird, almost ticklish when you put your hands in but in the end I actually really like it. I feel like investing in one for my home...
it took me some years of living in Texas before i considered trying Rudy's. A few years ago, there was a commercial where some big guy (i believe a local TV station or newspaper writer) would appear to drink an entire bottle of Rudy's bbq sauce and declare "the sauce is boss!"
That commercial kinda grossed me out (it was a BIG bottle), and also, i thought that Texas Q was not about the sauce...
So we tried it and yum, i think Rudy's is great! i like that they offer extra lean brisket, but what i really like is the turkey. Plusses for the pickles. I haven't tried the sides, but i like their selection of bottled sodas, especially the Mexican Coke. The white bread i could pass on, and you need to find your veggies elsewhere, but i do have to admit that the sauce is not too shabby.
Oh yeah, i recommend the industrial hand washing machine. That thing rocks!
