12 reviews for Ruchi India Restaurant
This is a great example of how taste is so subjective. Before eating at Ruchi, I just thought Indian food was "eh, okay..." I'd had Korma Sutra a couple of times, and the buffet at India Palace a few times with friends. But this Christmas, I dined at Ruchi - and they blew me away!
True, the service was kind of slow. It was fairly busy when I arrived, and swelled into a flurry of customers waiting by the door by the time I was leaving.
The Pakora (mixed vegetables, fried) were nice - but I don't think I'll get it again. I mean... It's fried vegetables. I ordered the Chicken Tikki Masala, which is what one of the managers recommended. Lots of people seemed to be ordering a dish that came out sizzling, like Fajitas. But it obviously wasn't Fajitas.... It smelled and looked wonderful, so I hope to order that next time. But it will not be easy to stray from what I did have - because this stuff was sublime!
First they bring you a platter of rice in the middle and four smaller bowls around the sides with various soups, sauces and a dessert! Then the entree comes out separately. The Tikki Masala was so delightful. I highly recommend it if you've never had anything else. It's not too spicy, but plenty of savory and interesting flavors come together so beautifully with the basmati rice. The naan (grilled flat bread) was the best I've tasted. It was simple, unlike the wild varieties they serve at Korma... I don't know what the dessert was. It was a dark orange paste of some sort. It had some raisins in it, and wasn't too sweet. Very tasty!
The portions are too much for even me to finish. Most everyone was taking home boxes to go. So I just went into the kitchen to nibble on my leftovers from earlier. I expected to find dried rice and a gelatinous goo that used to be sauce. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that everything was still moist and delicious. The sauce was still rich and velvety. Honestly, I ended up eating all of it without heating it up! How many leftovers can you say tasted almost as good cold as they were when served??
I'll definitely be going back. I want to try the buffet. Many of the reviewers here have said that it's wonderful. I hope they'll have the butter chicken when I go. Maybe it's a weekend thing??
Try it. Enjoy!!
The service is good, and they serve (apparently) genuine Indian food, as opposed to "Americanized" Indian food.
The buffet on weekends is excellent. Lots of choices.
The service is good. This might be my favorite Indian place in KC.
I came in having high hopes for Ruchi. After being treated to some great Indian food in Seattle (courtesy of A Taste of India), I was excited to hear that Ruchi was always popping up as one of KC's favorite Indian restaurants and felt it was time I put my palate at their doorstep.
I grabbed their lunch buffet but feel I should sample an evening meal for a better review here. I don't know about the rest of you, but I like my fine Indian cuisine restaurant to be intimate. Somehow Indian food and several cups of hot chai puts me in a mood of peaceful serenity. Well those feelings weren't coming up at all at Ruchi. I literally felt I was eating at a Golden Ox or something. With the layout and booths (freaking booths!), I kept wondering if I was going to get a big tray to put all my food on and an option for a salad bar. The food was ok but it was buffet. Don't make the mistake of thinking food on a buffet is stellar no matter the cuisine. I think the only place buffets seem to reign supreme is Vegas.
Service was ok but nothing like I've experienced before at other Indian places. In the past, they have represented my measuring stick for service. Ruchi was just bland all around but I should go back for an evening and see if it changes my mind.
Do words like tandori and vindaloo make your mouth water? If so, nobody in town makes better Indian food than Ruchi. Their delicious chicken tandori comes to the table sizzling, and the chicken tikka masala is always the first dish to be emptied.
Once Udipi closed, Ruchi became my favorite for vegetarian Indian too, with dishes like Potato Sabji I haven't found anywhere else. The option of ordering your entrée thali or a la carte confused me at first, but once I'd tried the slightly more expensive thali, I decided the additional soups and chutneys didn't significantly enhance my dining experience.
A few years ago, Ruchi opened a second location in Lawrence. But despite their affiliation, the service and quality were miles apart. The Lawrence location is long gone, and so is the chance that its bad mojo will rub off on the original.
This is one of the top 3 Indian restaurants in this area. They have the standard $7.50 lunch buffet that can be really good and diverse but on occasion, bland. The manager told me their dishes were "simpler" during the day to accommodate the American palette and to come back for dinner. I did and it was quite good.
A friend has worked with their managers and cooks and coordinated with our friend's favorite restaurant in VA to develop a completely vegan menu. It is a completely different menu and you must ask specifically for it (and perhaps insist that they have one). There are perhaps 50 offerings on the menu and they are all vegan.
Note on less positive reviews: If you travel, or are from a larger city, you know that larger cities mean larger ethnic populations that can support more diverse tastes. Temper the couple of less positive reviews with their background. If you are from a big city with wonderful Indian food - this may be different. If you are from KC, this is some of the best available.
At war with Korma Sutra for South KC supremacy.
Ruchi is one of those restaurants you have to have on your regular restaurant schedule. As I have mentioned in other reviews, I work with dozens upon dozens of Indian folks. This is by far, Indian people's favorite restaurant.
Naan is decent, Mango Lassi is not watered down and flavorful and the buffet has a huge variety of authentic items. This definitely a recommended place, however I will sometimes pick Korma Sutra depending on how pressed for time I am at lunch.
Wow after reading most of the other reviews I'm wondering if we are indeed speaking of the same Ruchi...
Chicken Tikka Masala- Awesome!! If you like it spicy... let em know.
If you want real spice... opt for the Chicken 65
Naan... Go garlic! Enough said.
I agree the ambience leaves much to be desired but hey... I've eaten in a dirt floor Indian Restaurant in Goa and I've been to the settlements in Vancouver so, what are we really here for? The food...
My first buffet experience was a failure but, they recently redeemed themselves this past Sunday afternoon. So if you're new to the cuisine. Do the buffet and "try" it all! It may look strange but, as Emeril would say BAM! Man the flavor.
ENJOY!
We had high hopes for this Indian restaurant - when we stopped by for the lunch buffet it was crowded so we decided to leave and return for dinner. My boyfriend is temporarily moving out to Overland Park for work and we had hoped to find a restaurant that would substitute for our favorites on Devon in Chicago.
We ordered the samosas as appetizers and for entrees the paneer jal freezi thali and the paneer burji thali. While the samosa filling was actually quite good the pastry shell was unappetizing and they were served with a hot tomato and a mild coconut sauce. I was surprised there was not a tamarind/date sauce as I've never had samosas without it.
The actual entrees were average. The paneer jal freezi was the type with gravy. I had asked for it to be medium spicy but it had no heat whatsoever. My boyfriend asked for his food to be very spicy and we found it to be extremely mild. The sambar and ratham were overly mild as well. The khmeer (rice pudding) was served with the rest of the food so it was quite warm by the time we got to it. The naan however was delicious! yummy!
The service was mediocre at best. First the waiter brought out our entrees and after we began to eat he came back and said one was wrong and switched it. Then a few minutes later he came back and said it was the correct entree and switched them again. We asked for onions and lime to accompany our meal but they never came. Nor did the refill of water until the very end. And it took a couple of requests to actually get the boxes for the food and a few more to get the check.
Our entire meal was about $40.00 - not bad if we had left pleased with the experience but a bit more than we had anticipated. We definitely won't be back - the food was much too Westernized for our tastes.
Buffet is worth the money. Service is not the best. They tend to overprice most of the dishes. With the limited options for Indian food in the KC Metro area, Ruchi is probably the best in town for food.
okay just a second note- evidentally the paneer naan was giving my butter chicken its flavor i reheated the next day for lunch and went.. well THIS isnt how i remember this dish. so yea. i'll take back what i said. the naan was good. order the naan. other than that.. i'm going elsewhere. cough! Paradise india!
A-ok. after Steve T;s review and since this is just around the corner i decided to not go to my normal Paradise India weekend dinner and give Ruchi a try. i'll say what i liked about it first, i liked the location since it was so close although smelling the Burger king fumes made me relive the food poisoning i got from them and throwing up that charcoal flavor for days- its got great parking- its a clean pretty restaurant. the staff was polite. i liked the actual entree of butter chicken it was VERY good and it was mild so that made me happy. i didnt get the extra full meal with the soups and etc since i wasnt sure about the place i didnt want to get into too much money especially when i'm just learning about the food, i ordered naan appetizer potato pakoras since i knew nothing next to the paradise india chicken samosas would do- and entree with a mango lassi - i also got handed the check without being asked if i wanted dessert so i didnt try it there. big mistake cause i would have ordered it. the potato pakoras were tasty. although the red sauce served with them really was HOT it melted the inside of my mouth for a few minutes and my sinuses are completely clear- the white sauce mixed with the tamarind was good dipping. the paneer nan wasnt what i expected it to be- it wasnt cheese it had a paste and herbs in it but it was good and all hot and fresh. what i didnt like- no onion chutney for the appetizers- the mango lassi was warm and even after i put ice in it= just not as good as the other two places i've had them, maybe it was just mine because the girl sitting next to me raved about hers - but honestly my problem was- the rice. i've never enountered rice with corn lima beans peas and carrots in it. three of my least liked vegetables ever! i dont even order chinese fried rice often because of the peas and carrots. i prefer steamed rice and the indian food places normally i thought it was a basmati rice sometimes with saffron to not take away from the entree. i tried some and i could taste the lima beans. yik. so i ate my tasty butter chicken and dipped the spiced naan in it with no rice. that was very good. i also took home leftovers and will be making plain rice tomorrow to go with it. all that was 26 bucks. and from the other reviews, i'm feeling just fine tummy wise.
if you like those veggies in your rice go for it.. for me well- all in all i really preferred Paradise India every course was excellent and a all round tastier meal with mango lassi and the onion chutney i like-not to mention thier chicken samosas were amazing and two incredible desserts for just a few dollars more. so i think unless i REALLY dont feel like driving and i have to make my own rice. i'll go out of my way and pass on Ruchi.
Fantastic family-recipe butter chicken, great dhosa - masala or plain. Ruchi means taste in Hindi, and taste is what you'll get at this family-owned establishment. Spicy, savory, hot and sweet, Ruchi will accomodate special orders and off-menu items and cater to the kids as well. Try the Mango Lhassi for a treat or the famous Butter Chicken. It is exceptional.
Great for a Kansas City Indian taste.
If you want it hot - INSIST on it - the one thing they do 'wrong' is to think that Americans want it mild - if you just say 'hot' it will be mild. So make sure you say hot if you want it hot.
Now that said, this is great indian food at a reasonable price. I haven't been to India, but I've been to England which has many good Indian restaurants and this is pretty good indian food;.
Just make sure you are clear with the waiters what you want and you will have a great meal.
