i've the sign for this place numerous times but never ventured in until Ace D. organized a preparty here.
i was late...i didn't stay for long...but i do know that i will be back.
the space was HUGE! the bar had a good selection, the drinks looked big (not gaslamp size drinks)...the crowd was all Yelp that night, so not sure what the normal crowd is...

The Ruby Room kinda sucks yo. It has a few redeemable qualities though:
1) It has PBR in a bottle (which I didn't know any place sold) with a shot of whiskey for $5.
2) Free Ms. Pacman near the men's room. (Classy.)
3) The acoustics in there are better than some dive bars.
Here's what makes it sucky:
1) The restrooms.
2) The narrow parking lot that no one can escape from. -

This spot looks much better and less cluttered.
It's got a much more kitschy saloon feel and I like that. Perhaps they'll throw an urban cowboy night. Anyways, the drinks are cheap, the bartenders cool and kind and I look forward to coming back for one of the many different types of events they hold here. -

Okay I for one hate how one douchey overly self entailed ass hats whom get kicked out of the bar for some gay shit (Not fun "everybody's free to feel good" kinda gay ps, "I'm bring booze into a bar that is dirt cheap in the first fucking place" kinda gay) can come on line and bash a bar for kicking them.
In case you where wondering why they have bad reviews, that would be the reason. Maybe you don't know this but the Ruby Room could loose there liquor license if vice catches people BYOBing it. Ass hat.
Anyways Ruby just got a new sound system and it looks and sounds brilliant! The Bartenders still have heavy hands and there is as always an never ending ever changing cast of lovable crazies to keep you in good company, as well as good music and shows.
Ps if you haven't tried out Ryan Root's cocktail club on saturday days bring your own glass (not booze!!!) and come watch John Water films with us! So much fun!
Oh and word on the street is that Lilly Holiday drinks here sometimes. ; )1 Previous Review: Show all »

I don't know if it was a one time thing or what, but there were $3 shots of tequila and $15 bottles of champagne for MayStar's night... I really hope they do that every time from now on. (They usually run out of champagne, but this time they finally didn't.) Everything just seemed extra happy and fun because of the champagne and maybe the tequila too.
The only sucky thing is that there are a couple black lights there now. A couple people were complaining about them, so I know it's not just me. They aren't nearly as bad as other bars, but black lights are so outdated and they make everyone's teeth and eyes look yellow.
Ruby Room, if you're out there, if you're listening - do yourself a favor and rid yourself of those black lights. The place was fine without them.
Maybe a nice blue bulb would work in their place?
Also, the new stage lights looked kinda cool. And the sound is better. And the DJs are better.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I would venture to say that this is the "straight club" in Hillcrest - though they are gay-friendly. It's different than the other bars in the area. I went once for a New Year's party and ended up dead in the alleyway. When I came back to life, I realized I lost my entire wallet. Anyway, I called RR and they found it and happily returned it. I love them for that.
If you like special events, live music and fairly priced drinks (sometimes free!), then you should really look up http://maystarparties.com. She's always sending out free passes and info on themed nights and hosted bar hours. Yay! -

This a good family owned neighborhood bar. I've always had a good time there!
It's your average pass no judgment place with a good staff. They usually have a good variety of entertainment through out the calendar.
I'm guessing that Airica M. has never gone to a bar before. Everyone knows it's illegal to have any type of open beverage outside of a bar. I'm also sure that she was asked nicely to go back inside with it and she lost her shi, then got kicked out.
And great choice of words Sean S. you are an idiot. Just another case of an ignorant person jumping on and hiding behind yelp! -

I guess this place used to be a sports bar but I could swear that it was designed as a strip club back before all the strange rules that makes strip clubs not much fun anymore.
FOOD/DRINK: Well the "Ruby Kitchen" is no more so there is no food to review here...but like any good dive bar they don't really get all up in a huff if you bring food in from somewhere else as long as you clean up after yourself (and bring enough for everyone if it is fried chicken). The drinks are simple and cheap. Lots of Green Flash products on tap and $3 P.B.R as a ongoing 'special' the well brands are kind of scary and usually come out of a plastic liter but what else do you want for with your free entertainment and sticky bar room floors.
SERVICE: I haven't been here enough to really get a bead on the bartenders, I know one of them moonlights at the Cosmopolitan in old town (or vice versa) and knows a lot about mixed drinks. No one here has ever been rude to me, but I am sure they have tossed some people to the curb when the situation called for it.
LOCATION/DÉCOR: With an entrance 40 feet off the sidewalk behind the no longer associated restaurant it lends to my theory of this place starting out as a "gentleman's club" but I still have nothing to confirm or deny that. Inside it is dark and hot most of the time, there are free old school arcade games, two pool tables, and a photo booth (that seemed a little out of place to me). I could probably use up my 5,000 characters allotted by Yelp just in describing the inside of the Ruby Room but its best to just go and check it out. I will say that they have the largest collection of Dr. Pepper knock of brands I have ever seen along one of the walls and leave it up to you to go find it.
They don't have a fenced off patio where you can smoke and drink at the same time so this won't make it on 'that list' but they do set up couches out front so you can comfortably indulge in some tobacco related activities and go back inside when you are done.
By definition the Ruby Room is a dive bar; is it in my top 10 dive bars in Diego? That has yet to be determined but I will be back and I suggest you go and check it out sometime, it is worth the trip.. -

I came here to see my friend's band play. They were having a few bands play that night, as well as having a night of political art being displayed/sold. It's a really low key place. There were not very many people there despite having an event on and I would say 40% of the people there were friend's of the band that was playing.
The decor inside was plush red velvet walls. I guess that's how they got their name. I felt like I was back in the 70s or something.
I don't know if I would ever come back here again. It was nothing special and there were no people there, but then again maybe I just caught them on a bad night. -

All i know is that after going to Eden, Richs, Flicks we ended it up here.
Was packed i had fun. They have a photo booth cause i remember yelling kiss kiss kiss to my friends.

You know what, I haven't been during prime time, so maybe I'm missing something horrible. Boozers that we are, the man and I generally check in this joint on Saturday afternoons pre-food shopping...and it's always a win.
Regardless, weekend afternoons are totally chill. Ryan, the baddest bartender in town, is the ultimate in class and kindness--he remembers what you like, what you talked about last, and asks how you're doing. He pours a stiff drink and will even concoct something special if you ask nicely. His weekend "special" is always fantastic--last Saturday it involved blood oranges and pomegranate vodka and nearly knocked me on my ass with awesomeness. And you do all of this to (usually) John Waters on the TV. People (including myself) brag about places dishing out $15 cocktails, but when I say "just make me something" and the bartender makes me something that tastes just like an Arnold Palmer but is 80% alcohol...yeah, good things are brewing here in the best way possible.
The vibe is relaxed, if artsy, the atmosphere eclectic, and the drinks strong and cheap.
What are you idiots complaining about, again?
Oh, wait. Maybe I just haven't been on a Friday night or something...Listed in: Hillcrest Hits

Decently priced for a live venue, they don't take themselves too seriously, which is good, because they're pretty much a dive bar.
Plethora of interesting characters on any given night. Just don't expect to have an intimate night of conversation here as it does get pretty loud. -
Review from Denise K.
Divey, dive dive.
I don't like paying $5 cover charge for what was a seemingly crappy band last night. How does a band just sound like loud noise? blah! Oh well, I was there to have a good time with friends.
Drink specials every day of the week (+). Only 1 bathroom (-). Smallest parking lot ever (double -). Not sure I'll be back... -

This place is ok for a music venue however, unless a band has it's own sound guy, they're probably not going to get a good mix. Almost every show I've seen here has been mixed bad, usually too much vocals, not enough guitar and sometimes not so much bass. Maybe the usual sound guy just doesn't care or, he can't hear too well, at any rate, I think this could be a better live music venue with the right set of ears at front of house.
As far as drinks go though, they pour them strong which is a bonus cause when you've got a good buzz going on, you tend to overlook the bad sound mix ha ha ! -

I love this bar and you will too!
It's a great music venue. I've seen everyone in this place, from punk rockers to metal heads, from leather jacket 1%ers to candy cane ravers. The sound is great, the variety of music is mixed. The crowd is always there to have fun. I've seen and been in mosh pits, love fests, dance circles and conga lines. Ruby Room is the best club sized venue for live music in the city, along with Casbah. While they aren't catching all the bigger acts like Casbah, they are getting their fair share of amazing shows, and they are also constantly improving their space. Which means in the future they will be catching more of those shows. A bar that constantly improves their space seems to be a rare thing these days, and it makes me happy when I see Ruby Room doing it. And if they are charging a cover to get into the bar it's actually covering the price of a band, which, unfortunately can't be said about so many "bars/venues" in San Diego these days.
It's a great bar. And they have a full bar, and an amazing selection of beer. While it doesn't outdo Hamilton's or Small Bar in variety, every beer is priced the same! That means draft Scrimshaw pilsner is the same price as the Stone Arrogant Bastard. The owners are also beer fans, meaning that you can talk to them about beers and ask them to put things on tap that you might like. Hell, last week they asked their Facebook fans which beer they should next put on draft. Also, let's just say you aren't digging a band, or you met this cool person at a show and you want to talk to them more. The bar is far enough away from the music that you can be in the bar area without the sound from the show being louder than your speech.
The bartenders are also great. Amy is my favorite bartender of all time. You tell Amy you want something delicious and random, and she'll be glad to make that for you. Amy is one of the most skilled bartenders I've ever encountered. Ryan is also great at coming up with the most random, well thought-out and delicious drinks (be sure to check his cocktail hours!). This is not to take away from the rest of the bartenders who can make you anything you desire, but these two have become my gold standard of mixology. There aren't many other bars you can go into in San Diego and say "I like rum, can you make that into something that taste good?" and come out with something other than a Cuba Libre. Before I forget, all the bartenders I've been served by are heavy handed and pour strong!
The decor is great. Ruby Room encourages local artists. While not everything I've seen on the wall has been my cup of tea, I have fallen in love with and bought local art pieces from the Ruby Room walls. Ruby Room also hosts nights like Fashion Whore that aren't just about static art, and are amazing in their own right. And when Alex Julian is working, be sure to get a portrait of yourself done.
Finally, they support the community they are in. I've seen Ruby host multiple fund raisers for great community causes. As well as promotion for community events that may or may not be happening at the bar. This is a bar that cares about where it is, and the people that go to it.
What's bad about the place? It's not the easiest place to find the first time you go (it's sort of down an alley). They have a small parking lot, that I never use, but parking isn't hard to find within a block. The men's bathroom is awful. I'm not going to lie, it's just terrible. They don't always have the best bands, sometimes you wonder why a certain band isn't playing a smaller venue like Eleven, Soda bar, or Tower bar (but I've thought the opposite thing about more than a few bands at Soda bar and Eleven, why weren't playing a larger venue?). And they don't have football on the TV.
*edit/addition* I've seen more than a few reviews specifically about the bouncing staff. I've personally seen these staff members be more than patient with super drunks that I'd have personally 86'd. It seems that most of the negative reviews stem from people being kicked out. The bouncers have to have your best interest and the bars best interest in their minds. If you make a super drunk choice/mistake, it is in everyone's best interest for them not to let you back in. -
Review from Kristen F.
San Diego, CA
I really like the Ruby Room. The parking sucks but once you get there you are rewarded with witty bartenders that are heavy handed with the pours. They have a rotating selection of micro brews and always have something special on tap. For those who are gluten free: they have cider and wine! It is a roomy bar with 3 sections.
They have an eclectic mix of live musical acts ranging from the pretty and poppy, to the dark and evil, to mc battles and electronic music. They draw some big names you loved to see in the past, and new acts you will kick yourself for not seeing now. There is rarely a cover and when there is the price of the drinks MORE than make up for the fact you had to pay to get in.
There are 2 pool tables and numerous little sitting areas. The regulars are a bunch of characters that, tho they do cause a bunch of shenanigans, always are a fun and welcome bunch.
The couple that own the bar are super friendly and will always shoot you a smile. It is a little dark inside and if you were coming to have a nice chat with friends, you will find you picked the wrong place.
The vibe is fun, the staff is friendly, the booze is CHEAP! There are some reviews about people getting kicked out for "no good reason" however the door staff are on top of their game and are always monitoring if you a) bring in your own booze (its so cheap it is cheaper to drink there! And duh why bring booze to a bar?), b) bring your glass of water outside (they know it's water, you know it's water, but the cops and vice that patrol see an open container and can sit the bar because you dont understand the law), c) give someone (man or woman) unwanted attention and do not understand what "no" means.
It is not your typical hillcrest bar. It is akin to the dark and divy and devilishly fun bars of north park and south park. It is a jewel amongst the glitz and gleam of the other establishments surrounding it. I
If you want a night full of characters, amazing entertainment, cheap drinks, fun staff, and whatever show they have let lose on their stage, go to Ruby!
*A quick note about the restrooms: There is a multi stall mens room. There are 2 singular women's rooms. The one closet to the stage will be used as a dressing room for the entertainment leaving one left near the entrance to the stage room. If you can't see the signage on the door, you are a)drunker than you thought, b) not looking. I am tired about hearing how there is only one bathroom.

Alright, they've earned another star. It can't be bad if I keep going back, right? The problem is that I can't really put my finger on why. Relatively inexpensive drinks?

Review from Brett K.
San Diego, CA
This is on my top 10 dive bars within crawling distance of my home. It has cheap drinks, is ridiculous in 13 different ways, and doesn't have 97 flat screens showing 10 different sporting events.
Sundays are the best, assuming you want to watch an awesomely bad, slightly pornographic flick (on their only TV...a projector in the corner) from the 80s while you compliment the bartender on his maestro mustache and drink implausibly cheap drinks in an uncrowded bar. If this doesn't appeal to you, then you are boring or dead.
I came here with some lesbians I met in the street a few weeks ago. Did you know it's okay for guys to put their arms around butches? She gave me permission when I asked. Anyway, we thought we would have better odds since we were all looking for the same thing (sort of). Somehow, none of the girls at the bar seemed interested in either party when I asked them if they were lesbians and/or wanted to engage in lesbian sexual relations with my new friends. Girls can be so picky. Defeated, we played the punching machine, which ends up being pretty expensive when you play it for an hour.
I also went there on a date with a girl, probably because I am a stupid human being. It took two dates AFTER THAT for her to realize she wasn't into me! Crazy! We have date souvenires from the photo booth. -

This bar is OK. They have a cool setup with booths near the bar, pool tables in the next room, and then a room for bands in the third room. The staff is friendly.
My complaints are that they charge $.50 if you use a credit card, even if it's over $10.00 and the beers on tap kinda suck. Shock top, Shiner Bock, a bunch of wheat beers. They do have three Stone brewery beers on tap and Green Flash IPA, but a pretty weak selection especially since when they changed names to Ruby Room they said they were going to focus on having good beer. Also, they rarely get good bands to play. -
Review from Danny W.
I've been to Ruby Room a few times now, but my last experience has been the best. Previously they had really loud crappy music and an overly crowded bar area making it hard to wet my whistle. It' probably because I went during their dollar happy hour, but I have no problem paying a little more for a little less competition to order a drink so I popped in a little later this time around.
The low prices and live music usually draw a bit of a crowd, but the other day it wasn't slam packed so I was able to get a beer quickly and play the free video games at the end of the bar. They have both N 64 and regular Nintendo so it's an awesome way to relive some of my childhood favorites while sucking back a few alcoholic bevs. The band wasn't that bad this go-around either and was also kept at a decent volume to the point where I could enjoy it, but still hold a conversation.
I definitely think how you rank Ruby Room depends on the night you go, but if you find the right night for your mood I think they've got a lot going for them.Listed in: Hill to the Crest, I'm here for the beer!, Best Happy Hour

Review from Jessie S.
This gem is neatly tucked away behind some restaurant. It felt wrong walking towards a dark parking lot with crowds of people standing outside and conversing while sitting on red couches next to cars. I felt as if I was in a David Lynch movie... twisted, dark and magnificent.
It's a dingy dive with red lighting and red velvet on the walls (reminded me of Blue Velvet). They had a kickass selection of beer on tap (Stone Smoked Porter, Arrogant Bastard), not to mention friendly bartenders. The stage for the band was intimate, the restrooms were spotless and the crowd was welcoming. Definitely ready for another Ruby Room kind of night! -

Eww I hate you Ruby Room. I just felt like picking up a car and throwing it after my experience here, HULK SMAAAAAAASH!!!!!
It has been said through the many years of my customer service experience that indifference is the worst kind of way to treat a consumer. If someone is mean or perhaps overly terse with you in a store, you remember. However when someone acts like you're not even alive, or your concerns do not matter to their business, that is when you vow to never forget.
I have waited for months to see if my mind would change about this experience. It has not. The wrath will now unleash.
It was my Ruby Room experience that irked me to no end. I meet up with some friends on a weekly happy hour. We like to farm it out all over town to get different experiences and meet new people. We usually pick a place where you can sit, have a drink, and also grab some food, (it's nice if it's quiet enough to talk) if there is a jukebox, that is a super bonus for Shell-ster.
Months ago one of my HH associates wanted to meet down in her hood of Hillcrest. It was decided we would check out the Ruby Room, they had great $1 beer specials and well drinks for $3.
When I pulled up, I was elated to find parking right in their private lot instead of searching all over Hillcrest, which can tax my BRAINMEATS.
Anyhow I met up inside with Kim and soon after Miah joined us, then Mike, the bartender was great he had this amazing fancy moustache that I truly admired. He was fun and kind, and quick with his work.
So we sat near the bar until everyone arrived and moved up behind the bar where the seats are around small tables to talk. It became really loud, this is the previously known "San Diego Sports Club" if you've ever been. It has always been a band place, we could hardly talk but we knew it would get like this, historically it has been an extremely loud venue. After a drink and food we decided it was just too loud and walked out of the parking lot past my truck to a coffee shop right next door.
After imbibing on a quick lychee iced tea, both Kim and I went back to drive home from the lot next door. By this time the bands had all arrived for the evening, with trucks, and cars and trailers in tow, they were blocking every single car from getting out of the lot.
At first I thought, "ok wait a few minutes, these yahoos are moving out any second here." But shortly I realized they were camping out for the night and had no plans to move. Drunk people seem to annoy me, when I'm ready to go home, this was no excpetion. I thought at first they were just bringing out all their instruments and setting up drum kits. But after all the doors were shut and locked there was no movement whatsoever. Then I asked Kim to talk to someone knowing I was not fit to be diplomatic at this precise point in time, Miah came out as she was still inside sometime around then and also helped.
So many things went wrong at this point.
The door man asked me if I had "even been inside?" He had checked my ID maybe at the most only 2 hours before that. Ok I get you're not going to remember people but then he said "I can't leave the door" (meaning I'm not doing nothing for you or anyone).
Then Kim and Miah had to run around for at least 15 minutes trying to figure out who had which car, there were 3 truck/cars/trailers blocking our exit.
1. First of all thanks for blocking your own customers in fucktards.
2. Secondly--is this fire safe? No I'm pretty sure it's not and against the law. If there had been a fire, what the hell would have happened to all the people in their cars?
3. If there is a situation on site, get a manager, if you can't leave the door, have a signal of what to do or a headset. Get it together Ruby Room, if you wanna play with the big boys act like one.
4. A manager AT ALL TIMES should know what is going on in his/her establishment. He or she should be circling the premises keeping the big picture in mind. We never saw a manager, my friends had to rope in each member of each band to move all the vehicles since they were blocking everyone from getting out of the entire parking lot. Then when they finally all got their asses in gear, they started yelling at me as I backed out "Alright we moved lady now Go! GO! GO!"
I yelled back, "Don't pull back in, he has to move his car too!" (this was to Kim as he got in his car which was ALSO BLOCKED IN because every single car was blocked in.)
Stupid assholes. We *were* your customers, and I can guarantee you I won't be one again. -

I enjoy the Ruby Room and I HATE bars. I mean DESPISE. I usually go to support my friends who play there quite often. They also do cool art gatherings there as well. Bartender there is super cool and always visually awesome. If you saw him you would know what I meant. Respect him, he will respect you. I know no other person who will try the drink he is pouring to you just to make sure it tastes right...Always a campy cool movie playing, clean and a nice sized stage for bands and dancing. Parking is well..as I often say..A BITCH... not there fault though. I will keep coming back

The staff is really nice. We have never waited a long time to get a drink. and decent prices.
My husband and I visit here quite often for different music shows and the sound is always perfect.
The owners are really nice and always ready to help if you have a question or a comments.
I recently went and there was a lot of art work all over and I loved that. There was even a resident artist there and for a tip he would draw a caricature of you. The picture was so rad.

Pretty cool bar in a dope area- one piss yellowish star. Decent priced drinks, that well, get you drunk- two piss yellowish stars.
Joint strongly smelled of ass upon entering- first opaque non existent star. Bartenders continually doing the pass over non-eye-contact to my asian face- second non existent star. Wearing pajamas to work and rockin a lady gut on a weekend night- damn girl. You can have that last one.
Alright enough place but I have loot just like anyone else. I don't enjoy being ignored when the bar front isn't packed with people clamoring for drinks, I have an open tab, you've served my friends & I several times, and I'm pretty sure I'm not invisible- I'm just of a certain descent. I really do like the Ruby Room, I wish they would get some better bands up in there from time to time, but the fact that local artists can come here and shred is really great. It's a cool place with a low key vibe, a few pool tables, and cool decor.
They are always playing some random films on the tv monitors and have pretty good happy hour, but it doesn't last very long. I've only been here a handful of times, but so far so good. -

happy b-day Nick T!
shout outs to me and the crew who showed up. the bouncer was not charging the "bday party" as much, as we did not know there was a live band playing and there was a cover charge. Roger got his pool tables, me and sophia got in for free, and lauren introduced us to the owner, Shawn Cute (yes that is the last name) who gave me a card and was very friendly. bartenders were attentive (not to mention quite attractive). space was spacious. there are ins and outs after you get stamped and fat cats next door if you get beer munchies. -

CLEAN THE BATHROOM gentlemen. or better yet destroy it.
two stars just for that.
the rest of the place is good. nice layout, you don't have to listen to that shitty band if you don't want. good deals and great bartenders. -

So I love the Ruby Room. I big puffy heart love this place. The service here is always wonderful. The bartenders are rad and friendly, the art work regularly changes, and the drinks are always delightful.
And amazingly enough, my Asian face has never seemed to have a problem getting a drink. -

The Ruby Room can easily be broken down to the following:
$1 draft beers on Tuesdays AND Thursdays!!!
Honestly, at $1...my inner bargainista perks up and believes it's a wonderful idea to order 5 or so beers because at $1...what a great deal, right!?
Then after 3, my body realized that I can't handle my alcohol very well.
hmmm...dilemma
So I resolve that the next time, I will order one at a time, pacing myself. But as I see the draft list and see all the dolla dolla bills in my hand, I order 4.
Gah! Damn you, Ruby Room! It's okay, I still like you ;D
So down to the venue:
Dark, divey location in Hillcrest with live bands and local work by artists on display for sale. Bartenders are friendly and so is the crowd. The patrons tend to be very eclectic (grungy, rockers, hispters, indie, preppy...you name it) so all are welcome.
Oh and there's free wi-fi!!!
Being able to use internet at the bar + $1 beers = drunk facebooking and yelping. yikes! O_O
