What's up with NYC rent swallowing up gay establishments? That's like building a Wal-Mart on top of a trailer park. Florent, and now the lesbian owned and operated Ruby Fruit.
Loved it here. I had the Mojo Chicken: A Salsa-like sause over chicken with plaintains and veggies. The staff was super friendly, and, quite honestly, I felt strangely safe surrounded by lesbians.
Rest in peace :-(
I think the food was okay, but I honestly can't remember.
And why, you ask? Well, it probably had something to do with the fact that the soundtrack for the evening I was here consisted of a CD of 'Begin the Beguine' that kept skipping and hiccuping...that no matter how many times we asked, they would NOT SHUT OFF. You know, I used to love that song....
Please go away....
Came here last night because we heard a great DJ spins here on Saturday night's. Um, take my advice and just stay far away from here. I have absolutely no DJ skills and couldn't have done a worse job then the DJ last night if you even want to call her that! The "DJ", abruptly STOPPED the song and played a new one in the middle of the other song playing! WTF?! This happened several times as my friends and I were sitting there!
HOW DARE they charge a COVER to come into this tiny BAR that barely had a room for standing let alone dancing?! It had absolutely NO ventilation and was steaming HOT in there as if we walked into a sauna! Everything about this place is just wrong....
I really don't even know where to start...
My out-of-town friends were in for the weekend to celebrate my birthday/coming-out. Their goal was to hit every landmark lesbian spot in the city and this place was on the list. I went already a little tipsie and was bombarded by women who were about 25+ years older than me and my poor straight friends. I did have a few laughs with some older women who got a kick out of me and had a few drinks and moved on to my next bar/club of the night.
I still go back every now and then when I am in the mood for some cheap drinks and some greasy food to accompany. It's not the place I chose to pick up a date or get drunk enough to accept an offer.
No matter how many times I get invited here, it never seems to change. For some reason, this West Village bar seems to attract the bridge and tunnel component of the lesbian scene. Lots of makeup, tight clothes and big hair (mullets included). Walking through the door, you feel like you're back in the late 80s, but not in a good way.
And avoid avoid avoid the "grill" component of "bar and grill". The downstairs restaurant is a disappointing as it seems.
That being said, Ruby Fruit is kind of a historical institution and definitely has a "regulars" kind of feel, which can be nice when the Manhattan bar scene tends towards the impersonal. And if you're a cute enough girl, you'll definitely be welcomed. The question then becomes, is this somewhere you really want to be? Hey, whatever, we're all into different things.
Two words:
Gym. Teacher.
Oh, and the only reason it rates that extra star is because back in college me and the girl I had a crush on / fling with (what WAS that, anyway?) got kicked out of here for dancing. It will always be one of my favorite "young dyke in the city" memories.
The owner and bartender's are fantastic! Seriously, sweet as pie. I went to "Dykes on Mics" there, came WAY early for the show, went in to get out of the cold and they totally took care of me.
It's layout is great, the food ain't so bad and again, the people who work there are awesome.
If Aileen Wournos was still alive you would find her here with a Bud in her hand and a 44 caliber in her pocket.
Don't remember the stripper pole..
Ate there once, but it was unremarkable..
Used to go there all the time for drinks.. but never met any cool people. the bar tenders were nice.. it was an older crowd when I was going there.
I've only been here once....I intialy tried to go to Cubbyhole, but it was mega packed, and I did'nt want ot deal with that....I went her with a friend of mine, in summer time...We had a frozen mojitio or margarita, it was $12, but good...People were nice, which always impresses me...I will go back here....They played 80's music...One fo the bartendars was a lil bitchy, but the other one was super sweet...
The one and only time I went there, I was going in with a group of friends (we're all in our 20s), and as we were going in, another group of dykes were exiting. Now, they were all about 20-25 years older than us, and as we walked by, one of them whispered to another, "Look at the babies!" We go in, and everyone else is substantially older than us, and coupled up, butch-femme style. Not our scene, not our scene at all.
Finally!!!!...a first...Well what am I doing I an gay bar??...lol...I had an audition there. They have a live dj and a stipper pole on top of the bar. I didn't eat but the menu looked ok. It's intimate
i like this place ... with an exception...
ive been here a couple of times .. i like hanging out with people a lil older than me .. but NOT THAT OLDER!!
its agreat place to chill and hang out .. but dont get too drunk u might end up making amistake with sum 1 who can be ur mother..
A strange place... the music and atmosphere did not mesh well. Cute, cozy bar w/ leopard upholstery and an eclectic crowd... the only problem was I couldn't hear a single word from people I was standing inches away from. The sound system was a bit overwhelming, considering the size of the space. I would consider going again if the volume was appropriate. Would be a cute place to chill.
