Another birthday review! @Rubio_BeachMex style
I got another birthday coupon this year from Rubio's. The entree I chose this year was one I liked a lot. I got the Baja Grilled burrito with steak. It came with fresh guacamole, cheese and salsa fresca.
I really liked the burrito. The steak this year was not hard. It was pretty tender. I think the best part of the burrito was that it was just filled with steak, guacamole, cheese and salsa. There was no rice and no beans. I am not a fan of places that pack their burritos with rice and beans and little meat and so I was pleasantly surprised that here at Rubio's they fill their burritos with the real good stuff- the meat! Yay! For that I give Rubio's another star :)
A couple days later I came back with a friend who also had her birthday coupon. I tried their Rubio's Street Tacos. This is a wonderful little sampler plate with 3 mini tacos, on a corn tortilla topped with fresh guacamole and a cilantro/onion mix. You have your choice of what to put in the mini tacos: carnitas, chicken or steak and I chose to get one of each. All three meat toppings were yummy and all had a distinct marinade. The folks here were able to pile on a healthy amount of meat in the mini tacos and the guacamole they put on top was a nice touch!
All entrees come with chips and I have to say Rubios' chips are some of the crispiest and tastiest I have ever tried. I actually didn't get to eat all my chips and had some left over. I ate the chips a couple days later and they were still crispy!
From the hearty steak burrito to the cute and delicious street tacos to their uber crispy chips, I am now a fan Rubios :)Listed in: It's my birthday...and I'll…

I love Rubios. I have been to probably about a dozen Rubios locations across California, Arizona, and Nevada. Go look at my profile - fish tacos from this place would seriously be my last meal if I were on death row. I had heard that they changed their recipe in an effort to cut down costs - I heard rumors that the new fish tacos were like fish sticks in tortillas. So I had to investigate.
I'm happy to say that at this particular Rubios at least, the fish tacos remain the same. And that's a good thing. They are amazing. They are like Audrina Patridge in your mouth. Eating one is like giving the Pope a high five. It's like humping a cold wet lawn at 1 in the morning. They are delicious and satisfying, like murdering a hooker.
I've almost exclusively gotten just fish tacos every single time I've been going to Rubios for the last few years and I'm happy with just that. But I have forayed into their other menu items - the street tacos and the gourmet tacos. Street tacos were little bite-sized orgasms. The gourmet tacos literally made me orgasm in the restaurant.
As far as this particular location, the employees have ALWAYS been nice. A couple have been around for awhile, some are new... but I've never had any problems with the cashiers. When it's not too busy they bring your tray of food to you. The salsa bar is never messy and they have vanilla Coke - that's awesome. Parking may be troublesome at peak hours because there are lots of gaylords who would rather spend their money at the shitty gross Subway next door. It's never been *too* much of a problem to warrant any change in score.
Rubios deserves nothing less than five stars from me. -

I love this Rubio's! Maybe it's the location, maybe because unlike it's Manhattan Beach counterpart has a patio or maybe because I love me some Taco Tuesday Fish Tacos!
I always order the same, original fish tacos on corn tortillas of course!
The drink selection is great and the food is always fresh. The only 2 things are getting in the way of 5 stars is:
1) Waiting for the service is painstaking
2) The prices went up from $1 to $1.25 to $1.50/fish tacos on TT. Sadly, if it goes up one more quarter I may have to reevaluate exactly why TT is so special for us. -

I came here for the first time with my GF because this was her college staple and loooves the fish tacos. So one day, it was Tuesday, and of course we had to make an appearance for their Taco Tuesday special.
They were pretty awesome. Of course served with Beans, chips, and a variety of salsa, it made a really good, and filling meal.
We came here a 2nd time, and though she made sure to get those fish tacos, i had to try their Steak and Bacon gourmet tacos. I mean, come on...... theres Bacon? i had to have it. And it was pretty damn tasty... if i must say so me-self..! LOL -

I have never had a bad meal at Rubios. I make a regular effort to come here on Tuesdays for their $1.25 fish tacos. Trust me people, it's worth the extra $.25 on Taco Tuesday.
I always order the two fish taco combo and I ask for Flour tortillas instead of corn. Deliciouso! My BF had their gourmet steak tacos - with BACON - yesterday and his mind was boggled that there was BACON in his tacos, lol. Maybe bacon does make everything better. -

Great fish tacos and their chicken tortilla soup is awesome for a fast food chain. The only thing that bothers me at this particular location is the fact that the glass for the salsa bar is so low it is impossible to get to any of the items in the rear unless you do a half squat which is pretty odd looking during lunch time. I wish they would just raise the glass a little bit so it would be easier to get your condiments. Other then that, awesome place to eat.

I like Rubio's. They wished me a happy birthday with a COUPON GOOD FOR ANY BURRITO, TACO PLATE OR SALAD UP TO $7.00.
Their FISH TACOS are solid. Their CARNITAS are good. Their CARNE ASADA, while not the best I've ever had, are certainly decent. Their BEANS are ossom (both BLACK and PINTO) -- so creamy! And I love the CHIPS -- so crispy! So fresh!
But my favorite menu item at Rubio's is seasonal: the tasty-beyond-tasty LANGOSTINO BURRITO. Lobster never tasted better.
My only big beef with Rubio's is that they're so expensive. I could get pretty much the same food for about 25% less at Baja Fresh.
But if you've got coupons, then I highly recommend Rubio's for a quick bite. -

new management?
Where did the palapas go? They gave the restaurant a cool beach feeling. background bossa nova music... where did it go?
food at this place is very fresh and basic for baja mexico food. I love their fish tacos. -

I used to like their Fish burritos they offer. I also enjoyed the fish taco especial. My taste for this establishment has changed. The type of fish they use is Pollock. The taste isn't as fresh. Don't like their chips and beans. Always get flour tortillas here because their corn tortillas aren't very good either. They even offer whole wheat flour, by request and that's cool because most places don't.
I recommend the Fish burrito and fish taco meal. I recommend you upgrade the taco to fish taco especial. This is a much better alternative, than going to Poquito Mas, which is in the same plaza. Annually they'll have the langostino lobster burrito, which is pretty tasty but also pricey. The salsa bar isn't too bad either but the chips suck. -

This place just doesn't do it for me.
Fish taco's are average at best.... and I love fish taco's (When done right) . Sides in little plastic cups are lame and unflavorful. Chips are adequate.
About the best thing is the salsa's... And you can't hold a restaurants hat to that alone.
I did have a good lobster burrito once - but they don't have them all the time.
Way too many other places that do it better... for the same cost.. or cheaper. -

Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA
We were somewhat disappointed on our visit last week to this location. Let me start by saying that the employees were great .. very friendly and welcoming. The food was very tasty, for the bite size you receive. But, the ambiance of this once very 'island-feeling' Rubio's was gone. It used to have a few booths besides tables, a beautiful fish tank, a straw/thatched roof hut motif, etc. When we walked in, it was stripped down to just chairs and tables. I noticed that there were a few swag lamps that said "Rubio's" on them in non-island colors .. brown and white. You virtually walk into a very plain, open room of chairs and tables. Mind you, this has nothing to do with the food, but it's just not inviting. The openness (VERY open) makes the sound level noisy, especially when people are sliding their chairs in and out from the table. I have to have some sort of ambiance, even in a fast food restaurant. My other complaint is .. I had forgotten how overpriced Rubio's has gotten for the portion you receive. A shrimp burrito was approximately $6.99. A fish taco was about half the price, but was just a small piece of fish on a small, soft taco .. nothing else. I know the price structure is a corporate decision, not an individual store option, but it's another reason I won't return too soon. Either way, I hope the employees stay as welcoming as they have/had been. It's a plus and one reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1.

I have been coming to this Rubios since '99. It is always clean, the service is good, and it's not a zoo inside like the one in PV. Yes it's a little pricey but Rubios is considered a "fast casual" restaurant, not fast food. If you want cheap tacos, there is a Jack in the Box right across the street. I do miss the nice saltwater fish in their aquarium, though.

If I'm going to cheat on my diet on a random Tuesday this is where you will find me, and since most locations have a fish taco Tuesday deal after 2:00 I'm also saving a little money. It's a guilty pleasure I can't resist! I love fish tacos and these are very tasty. I am also a fan of their big fish burrito and sometimes they have lobster specials-YUM!

I like Rubio's because this company was probably the first to bring authentic fish tacos to the masses, at a reasonable price. The guy who started Rubio's attended San Diego State (go Aztecs!) and he had visited San Felipe, Baja California, as well as Ensenada, to develop his fish taco recipe.
In my quest to find fish tacos in the south bay along PCH, I went to Rubio's and had the fish taco combo for $5.50, which is two battered fish tacos, chips and a small portion of beans.
I have to say, being a veteran of Baja road trips, that these tacos are excellent reproductions of the baja Mexican classic! They use cabbage instead of lettuce, just like the street vendors in San Felipe, and the creamy dressing is tasty and relatively authentic.
As for price, the tacos come in at under $2.00 apiece, which is below the average south bay fish taco price of $3.00.
Rubio's fish tacos are the most authentic reproduction and the best value I have found thus far!
I have also tried the lobster burrito, which may be seasonal on the menu, and it is delicious!
Rubio's also does the birthday club thing, which builds customer loyalty, and, they also offer on-line coupons when you register on their site. -

Rubio's has very good menu items. The beer batter fish buritto is excellent and filling. The chicken or shrimp salads are large if you go that route. Rubio's is no more expensive than similar resturants. The staff is friendly and provide good service. The place is always clean.

I just love their lobster burritos (only offered at limited times) and fish tacos. Their chips and food taste fresh and is a somewhat healthier alternative as far as Mexican food goes. I just visited their La Habra location and it just reminded me of how much I love Rubio's. This time with my 2 year old, I ordered the kid's menu which included a nice sized cheese quesadilla, chips, drink and a churro. I ordered just one fish taco with an extra side of guacamole and DH ordered a 2 taco combo. There was more than enough food as I was able to mooch some chips from both DH and my son. Next time, I'll even order a kid's meal, the churro was pretty good!

We used to love this place but it seems their food quality has gotten worse over the years and their prices have gone up. There's definitely better out there.

I have been a regular customer of this "Chain" but this visit hit the bottom of the scale. Yea, I know they are over priced but you usually get what you pay for. Not March 27, 2010. My wife ordered the regular fish tacos and they came out good. I thought I would be adventurous and order the Salmon fish tacos. They had signs with pictures all over the place and they looked good. What I got was a sliver of salmon and only a little filling. What a poor perception of value. I started to ask the staff about it but they don't speak English well enough to help me. And to top it off my chips were like the bottom of the bag...just a bunch of bits and pieces. I was very disappointed. It will be some time before I return. I am going to try out some of the competition. too bad.
