All I can say is; Just GO!  Fun to wander around and eyeball the selections of this passionate foodie known by a good friend of mine.  My visit was brief AND years in the waiting.  I bought a few items which I enjoyed at a later date.  All non perishable due to my travel schedule but I'd have spent my last dimes on some cheese or meats as the selection was drool inducing.

Pricey and this level of selection and quality tends to be.

I have stopped in here occasionally over the years and every single time I notice that the salesperson does not use food handling gloves to cut the cheese and specialty meats they sell.  Each time I see this, I kick myself for not having the nerve to say, "Do you mind wearing food handling gloves when you handle my food?"  One of the reasons I don't ask is that there IS a HUGE amount of attitude emanating from the place, as others have noted in their reviews.  Rather than get into it with the kid behind the counter, or the snotty owner (Mr. Rubiner)  I simply shop elsewhere.  But last week I needed a fairly big order for a luncheon and they really do have the best quality cheese and meats so  I promised myself that I would have the courage to ask the counterperson to use gloves.  When Arielle or Ariadne or Ariana or whatever her name was starting handling my porchetta with her bare hands (having just completed a money handling transaction with another customer), I asked her as politely as possible, "would you mind wearing food handling gloves when you slice the meat?"  She replied, "Yes, I could but we usually don't."  I asked her if NOT wearing gloves were a store policy.  She said it was not, but that it was hard to use the slicer with gloves on and furthermore, they wash their hands all the time.  Then -- hand to God -- she put her hand up to her nose to give it a little scratch.  So.  I paid for my porchetta, passed on the cheese, and decided that that would be my very last visit to Rubiner's.

This is one of my favorite stores in GB.   I tasted cheese but not that superior compared to VT.   Olives were GREAT and love them.   This store sells breads from local bakery and they are over priced.   Services were poor and got ice cream by the scoop was wasted of $.

We found this local cheese shop by accident and were delighted with the discovery. The cheesemonger seems to be a nice guy, and we were treated most courteously. Regrettably, when we stopped by the selection of local cheeses was very small. We settled on a very tasty goat cheese from Vermont and would have purchased more if it had been available. Given that our rating is based on only one visit, it's perhaps not entirely fair to the shop; we're guessing that at other times the local choices are much greater. Still, we wanted more and couldn't find it. We wish you better luck; we really like the place and wish it good profits.

As a cheese connoisseur, I have to give this shop five stars for the quality of the cheese. The marinated feta is divine (as it should be at $27/pound). This is not you ordinary cheese shop and I always find myself wandering in during the summer for a baguette and cheese to go with tomatoes and pesto from the garden.

However, the owner, Matt Rubiner only tends to customers who appear wealthy enough. If you are younger and not rich looking, he looks at you as though you were dog poop he found on the bottom of his shoe.

But, I can't resist the cheese and return to this shop, even though I feel uncomfortable every time I walk in...

Rubiner's Cheesemongers and Grocers, while only been on Main Street since 2002 or so, is now an institution in Great Barrington.  The owner, Matthew Rubiner, is a master gourmand, with an impeccable sense of taste and an excellent understanding of his customer.  The store is magnificent, filled with exotic cheeses under glass bells, stacks of cheeses stacked high upon marble counter tops.  He has locally-made foie gras pate in the cooler, next to bolude smoked salmon, niman ranch items, glace de viande, local organic eggs, and other items to tickle your fancy.

Astonishing store that rivals those in metropolitan cities.  A true treasure of The Berkshires.

Store Hours: Monday through Saturday 10 am to 6 pm; Sunday 10 am to 4 pm.

This store is absolutely amazing.  I loved the selections of just about everything they had.  Their salami, prosciutto, pasta, coffee, bread is astounding.  You'll need an entire afternoon just on their cheese selections and I'm glad I don't live in the Berkshires otherwise I'd be broke in a week buying everything they have!  Also, if you have an opportunity, go around the back down the alley to Rubi's.  I can say that it is the best Cafe latte I have ever had, and I'm a coffee addict.
