Neighborhoods: Northwest, LodoI love the RTD of Denver and since I've been on various transit systems in the world I'm glad our city's system DOESN'T SHUT DOWN after evening rush hour (i.e. 7pm like many cities).
Also the light rails are fast, clean, and void of any gang-related issues faced in other cities.
Last, I can't wait for the entire buildout of the rail system. Although it's entangled in ever-increasing costs I can't wait to ride the rail all the way up near Boulder or DIA !

I love my ecopass! I can ride anything RTD - which is great b/c I hate driving during commute hours. Not to mention the hassle of parking. The 15L gets me from my stop to work in less than 20 minutes. The bus ride home is slower and a lot stinkier, but hey, I am building my karma points.

I'm among the lucky households located in an RTD ecopass neighborhood. It is not free, and costs ~$200 yearly per household, with the amount going up by leaps and bounds every year. That includes up to 6 people, either related or unrelated, in the household. Even for l person alone, it's still a good deal because it is for Local and Regional, INCLUDING RTD to the Lake Eldora Ski Area or to the Airport.
I don't take buses all the time, but do sometimes. Whenever I'm going out of town I leave the car at home and take SkyRide to DIA and home. That is a real blessing, and is always reliable. I like the Boulder Skip bus, that runs so often it seems there is usually another one minutes later if you miss one. My son likes the Hop bus and rides it often.
The B bus to and from Denver is ok, Express is better than the one that stops in every suburb and city between Denver and Boulder.
I haven't really had negative experiences on the bus. (Harmony stops to "knock on wood").
The Light Rail is so fast...that's what I like about it most...I live in Boulder so I've only ridden on the Light Rail 5 times in my whole life...what do I know?
I know that when the Light Rail first began, a poet I knew named Alfred inadvertently walked on the tracks, and was hit and killed. I hadn't seen Alfred for a long while, but it was still very sad for me.
The End

FINALLY Denver follows every other major city by introducing the light rail. The light rail is, in my humble opinion, fairly new to Denver.
I love the convenience although I'm pretty positive I'm the only one buying a fucking ticket. Next time, I'm riding free and that is a promise! Either way "the rail" got me from point A to point B pain free. I thought I was on the LIRR for a quick minute till I realized there weren't any glistening, gelled up petty LI guys around.
Am a fan of the light rail!

I love the guy on my route that talks into his cell phone REALLY LOUD like the rest of are deaf.
I love the gay that sneers at me on the crowded bus when I ask if I can sit with him.
I love getting fashion inspiration from the chola gangbangers in front of North High.
I like talking to the drunk vets while waiting for my bus.
RTD beats paying for parking downtown anyday; It also beats waiting in traffic on I-25, cause at least I'm movin'.
Even though they just raised thair fare, it's still a great deal.
THUMBS UP!
I haven't owned a car since 1992 but I have only been in Denver for 9 years. Growing up in NYC, I am used to public transportation and all that goes along with it.
RTD is a quality transportation service. I actually served on a Light rail panel a few years ago, in which they would take comments and suggestions from us as well as keeping us informed of the pending Light Rail expansion. They try real hard to meet the needs of the people using their service, and they really do care. RTD is always doing something to add ridership and make their system much more than it is.
Their website is easy to decipher, the routes are fairly reliable to the time tables and many of the drivers are happy to do their job. Keep in mind that many drivers work for a contracted company, such as Laidlaw, as opposed to just working for RTD. You ever have any questions for the bus drivers, just ask them...I find they usually can answer it. They'll also make stops where you want at night, if you dont feel safe as long as it is on the route.
If you are a CU student, or have an Ecopass, then you are money. You can ride ANY service RTD has to offer, including the buses to the airport.
I think if more people rode the bus, or light rail, more than just once they might see how valuable a service it is to have.
Shout out to all my 0 bus drivers...woot!

A poem while sitting on the bus:
The bus is empty and I find a lonely seat
The wheezing man sits right next to me
Bus driver is picking his nose and three 14-year olds just got on the bus... Loudly
I thought the bus was empty but a homeless man popped up from the back and starts falling forward as the bus comes to a quick stop.
Wheezer turns his head the other way as to not look at the homeless man.
My bus stop is near and Wheezer waves me goodbye.
My next bus to Boulder is crowded and comfortable. Regional bus has soft cushy seats.
Each busser sits in the end seat, to avoid my body next to them
I end up sitting next to the talker...
* Star one is for public transportation
** Weirdo star two is for the characters that ride and make the bus the place to be
*** Starring star three is for the bussers who love to stare at you even though you have rolled your eyes 22 times
**** Speed it up star four is for the fast express busses that zip you to Boulder and back with no stops in-between
***** Smell it up star five is for stinky people who ride the bus, that is the best way to get your own seat fast

I rode the RTD, light rail while visiting here and I greatly applaud the mostly suburban Denver area for putting in a good system. Public transit could be a lot worse.
This was a four or five star bus system for everyone until the government talking heads got involved and decided to force RTD to lease buses on less populous routes to private transportation companies. Now those of us who want to head west on the 17 are often left high and dry as buses operated by a French company whiz by without stopping at their assigned stops, and RTD moans, "No can do," when you call and ask them to figure out why on Earth these drivers think it's kosher just to skip a stop where people are waiting.
Denver's buses- the ones people ride more often- are still well run and as clean as can be expected considering the amount of use that they get. Drivers are usually on time and fairly friendly downtown. Plus, if you ride the 16 late at night, you can sometimes find the crazy guy who is convinced he can grant wishes, and it's worth a try, right?
Just don't try getting to Golden on RTD if you're on a tight schedule.

The Denver bus system is fairly good. Buses tend to be on time, um mostly. I take the 48 to work everyday.
There really could be more buses and routes however.
If the bus system isn't necessarily the best way to get around it is certainly the cheapest entertainment you will find in the city. The crowd that rides my bus can be particularly hilarious. You see, I live by a lot of shelters and halfway houses and these guys come off their rocker sometimes. Don't worry though, if they get too rowdy the driver kicks them off.

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) is a fancy name for the Denver-area bus and light-rail system. I'm going to ahead and give it a 5, even though 4-4.5 might be more accurate. Why? Because I think it is under-appreciated.
Coming from Colorado Springs, a public transit hell, the bus system of Boulder and Denver is a fantastic change. You mean I don't have to drive everywhere? Yessssss.
The regional buses (whether it be from Boulder-Denver, Nederland-Boulder, Denver-Loiusville, Boulder/Denver-Airport, etc) are comfortable as all hell and pretty affordable as well.
The system itself is quite extensive, so you can definitely find a bus that will fit your needs, and get you where you need to go.
The drivers do their job (which is all I expect), and sometimes are even cheerful.
Another great thing about RTD is that when I was a CU student, I got a free RTD pass for the entirety of my stay with CU. (Ok not free...my student loans paid for it...but since everyone pays for RTD, this amount of money allows good service).
Voted the best public transit system in the US in 2003, they like to flaunt this fact.
Nonetheless, like all bus systems I've been around, they can run late, so plan on getting to your destination early.

Denver RTD gets to point A from point B with no fuss at all. If you are trying, say, to get to Denver from Boulder, you will experience a most pleasant departure, including a warm greeting from an even hotter bus driver followed by an excessively comfortable ride, complete with a breathtaking view of Downtown Denver in addition to some classic Coly landscape. Finally you will emerge safely and happily in Denver itself, where you can easily roam to city based on multiple RTD paths to and fro the central RTD station. For instance, after taking the free mall ride along 16th street you can perhaps take a connecting bus along Colfax or, for example instead take an equally glorious bus further down Broadway to explore boundless tasteful and campy charm. When you return to Boulder, however. Take care not to catch the 2:30 bus on a weekday.--very crowded.
