This is our favorite Thai restaurant in Auburn.  The red curry is amazing and so is the pad thai.  We have a hard time ordering anything else.  Last time we went we thought we would be a bit more adventurous and tried the turnip cakes.  We weren't quite sure what to expect, but they were delicious.  We are never disappointed.

We have eaten inside with and without soothing live music, outside on the patio when walking our dogs, and picked up to-go for nights we want to eat at home.  They are always friendly and accommodating and the portions are huge.

We find this the best Thai restaurant in Auburn.  The food & service is consistently excellent. Prices are reasonable especially since portions are very generous. Presentation is lovely.  My husband loves the Tamarind shrimp, but rather too sweet for me. I am allergic to soy & much of the menu is soy free, which I appreciate. Give it a try, you will be very happy!

I am a HUGE fan of the "other" Auburn Thai restaurant, but was urged to give Royal Thai a shot.

We arrived very close to closing time and the server was extremely gracious. In fact, we ended up keeping them there almost 1 1/2 hours past closing they continued to be gracious - very nice. There were 4 of us. We got an order of fresh rolls to share. The peanut sauce that came with the fresh rolls was not very good. Peanut sauce is one of those things, along with fresh rolls, that I use as a yard stick to measure a Thai restaurant by. The fresh rolls themselves, however, were quite good. Not the best, but a lot better than most. For an entree I got the Pra Rahm with tofu. I also had the chance to try Pad Thai with tofu. Both were pretty good, but see my previous comment on their peanut sauce. I found the Pad Thai to be kind of bland. The portions were pretty good sized and the prices were reasonable and, as previously stated, the service was really good.

Bottomline: if I am in Auburn and Auburn Thai Garden is closed, then I would come here for a good Thai meal.

Great Thai--the Ka Gai soup was a bit sweet, but full of yummy mushrooms and chicken. You get to add as much chili as you like, instead of using a sliding scale 0-5, which doesn't allow you to ramp up to your threshold. The fresh rolls are wonderful, the curry delicious, and the owners/wait staff gracious and attentive. This is THE place to go for Thai in Auburn.

I do NOT give 5 stars often, but this place deserved it! My husband and I decided to take a drive up north (we live in Sacramento) to Auburn with my mom to get out of town, get a bite to eat and cruise around some of the local shops. It was chilly but a beautiful, sunny day in Auburn. We hadn't been to old town Auburn or really hung out there at all, so we used our iphones to help us narrow down a list of restaurants we should check out. At first we wanted to eat at Pelican's Roost Fish and Chips but just up the street was a Thai place that struck our fancy... and that's how we came to The Royal Thai.

This is a quaint restaurant with eclectic decor, great customer service, extremely clean and neatly kept. I loved that about the place. I loved the decorations, I loved our server, I LOVED that the bathroom was spotless and everything was neat. But most of all, I LOVED the food! Hands down some of the yummiest Thai food I've had in a long while. Everything was fresh -- and I mean FRESH! Our server, after taking our orders and after we got our food, was sitting a few tables back making origami style garnishes out of fresh carrots and radishes. It was beautiful! My mom loved the way she carved them that she ended up giving my mom a to-go box full of carved carrot flowers, just because they were pretty (and she told my Mom they would be perfect in her salads) :)

I had the Panang seafood curry, my husband had the chicken green curry and my mom had the Veggie Medley with seafood. The seafood mix was delish -- had all kinds of yummy seafood in it, including squid, tilapia, mussels, crab, scallops, etc. All of our meals were delish but they all kept wanting to try mine, it was the best!

I forgot to mention that we also had the shrimp spring rolls as an appetizer and I had a Thai iced tea - both of which were delish!

Everything was affordable and the servings were plentiful. We had to take our food to go bc the servings were large. The Panang curry with seafood mix was $15, the Medley veggies with seafood mix was $15 and my husband's chicken green curry was $9.95. Bascially most of the dishes, if ordered with the seafood mix, would be $15. Any of the dishes with chicken or beef would be $9.95 and just shrimp would be $12 (I think). The spring rolls were $7. Like I said, all very affordable, especially for the portion sizes.

This place was great! And we will definitely be taking another drive up from Sacramento JUST to eat here.

I know I may be spoiled with all the cheap delicious ethnic food in the Bay Area but this place was really just over priced for what it is.

On Sundays, you only get the dinner menu.  Everything on that is at least $8.95.  My group ordered pad thai and pad see-ew, both mediocre.  Someone else ordered the drunken noodles which was actually very delicious, but still not $8.95 worth.  I was daringly enough to try the Thai sesame salad- which I would not order again.  The peanut sauce dressing was basically a glob of peanut butter with sesame oil drizzled over.  It was super thick, it's a paste, not sauce.  It said mixed greens but I had like 8 mixed green leaves and the rest was all iceberg lettuce. The thai ice tea was $3, no thanks.

The one good thing, they are generous with their meats and portions- as it should contain given the $9 price tag.

I love them, love them, love them! Every time i've been here, I am SO pleased. The decor is simple- classy, clean, but with a very cultural feel. You can even buy little Thai ornaments if you so desire.

Service is okay. The waitresses aren't particularly friendly, but they're certainly not cold. I think it might be a cultural barrier. They're fairly prompt, though I always feel I waited a liiiitle bit longer than I should've.

Food! It's... AMAZING! I get a vegetable tofu stir-fry. Ahhh... the cashews, the veggies, the tofu, the sauce- THE SAUCE! That's what really does it. I'm normally a 'quick' eater- not here. I literally try to eat one thing at a time, each little piece, so I can savor its individual flavor. Each bite tastes completely different than the previous ones. I just can't say how much I love their food, because it's indescribable. I've had a good amount of thai food; theirs takes the cake.

New Thai restaurant in Auburn.........giving David's Thai and BoBo Cafe some serious competition, for the time being.

Unfortunately, the prices are a bit steep for the area.......Lunch plates are $8.95 to $10.95 and most of the dinner entrees are $9.95 to $12.95.

For the price of one skimpy lunch plate here --- I can dine at my favorite Japanese Seafood Buffet in Roseville, and not leave hungry!

Very good Thai food here, as good as anything I've had in the greater Sacramento area. My favorites are the Pad Thai (which is a dish I'm very picky about) and the Drunken Noodles.

For something different, order the turnip cakes to share with everyone.

My portions there have always been more than enough.

Must agree with Matt on the price, steep for skimpy portions and average thai food. The service was on the slow side, on my one hour lunch break, it took them more than 1/2 hour to get our meals. How hard is it to get two lunch plates? I want to have time to enjoy my meals even when it's a lunch time.

We ordered pad thai and green curry; pad thai is way too salty and almost no acidity to counter the salt at all. The curry was ordered at med-hot and it came out with very little hint of spice and salty.  Bland and salty in the same dish, ummm! that's not a good sign.

As far as the decor, what decor?, it seems like they put up couple Thai stuff on the wall and that's about it.

The place is some what crowded because they pack too many seats in a tiny place and it's hard to maneuver around. One bathroom for over 50+  seats, come on, is a disaster waiting to happen.

Overall, 2 pricey 4 average Thai food at best and slow service.  AP

Went there for dinner with some friends last night around 6:30pm.

Normally service is very prompt here, but we arrived right after a large party (10+ people). We were seated immediately, but service was slower from there on. The staff is very friendly which made up for it a bit.

The food was excellent. We started with the Tom Kha soup and it only got better from there. Their Pad Thai is solid. The pumpkin curry special was amazing, but is a little spicy for those with a mild tongue.

We've never been disappointed with the food here, and the atmosphere is very pleasant. As it starts to get a little cooler at night I would recommend getting one of their street-side tables and enjoying mid-town Auburn.

I came here twice before reviewing. First time we ordered beef Thai salad and red curry with chicken. We asked about the spice level and we were told it was either medium ( not mild) , hot or Thai hot. We ordered the "medium". Both dishes were good, but WAY too spicy. I was sweating like a pig.

We returned again a month later and ordered 2 completely different dishes. Tamarind prawns( which were great) and the chicken drunken noodles. This time the food was so mild we considered asking for hot sauce to spice it up.

Overall, the restaurant is quick, efficient, and clean. Fast service, great origami designs out of the veggies that come with your meal, and LARGE servings for the money. Price is a bit steep, but you get portions that are twice as big as I've gotten elsewhere for a buck or 2 less and then had to order an extra dish. It's hard to pick between Royal Thai and Thai Garden in Auburn as they are the 2 best Thai houses in Auburn. Both come out to about 4 stars for various reasons. Just ask for the spice level of what you are ordering as it can range anywhere from bland to burn your socks off hot.

What!?!? Good Thai food East of Sac?!

I was working in the Auburn area today and couldn't stand to do another sandwich lunch...all I wanted was a nice plate of pad thai!

So I drove around downtown and stumbled upon this fancy little place.

The initial walk-in authenticity decor and menu scan? Check.
    Great service? Check.
Speaking Thai in the kitchen? Check.
4 different types of chili on request? CHECK!

I ordered the lunch chicken pad thai "very spicy." I think they are a bit conservative on spicing up their dishes because I could taste next to no spiciness...so...I asked or a side of chili and WOAH MAMA! I was back in Bangkok with a nice serving tray of 4 chilis: chili padi in fish sauce, jalapenos, chili powder, and chili sauce. They get 5 stars just for that...seriously. The chicken seemed so-so though..just a tad dry for my taste.

But anywho, to complement my fine noodle array (and although it was 8.95, it was a heaping plate and they gave you tom yum soup with it), I had a Thai iced tea which was super sweet and very delish.

Royal Thai, I am impressed. AND thanks for the buy-10-meals-get-one-free card!

I've always loved Thai food and when I heard that Royal Thai opened up, I was excited to try it.

My girlfriend and I took a couple of our kids and had a wonderful time. Staff was really friendly and the atmosphere was cozy.

The food was wonderful and the price was reasonable.

We were noticing the beautiful garnishes on each plate and wondered how they carved carrots and other vegetables into flowers and other shapes, so we asked. The waitress came to the table with her "kit" and began to show us how she did it. It was so cool (and very nice) and soon the entire dining room was watching. She ended up going around and doing a quick demo at each table.

A great experience all around and I highly recommend it for a nice meal.

Really solid Thai food.  When you're leaving Tahoe and you're sick of all the resort/pub food, Royal Thai really hits the spot.

Last time I went we got the pad se ew, medley veggies and spring rolls.  The one complaint was that there wasn't much spice to them.  This was easily remedied by asking for hot sauce.  What they actually brought us was four little jars filled with various spicy goodness.  One was pickled red peppers that had a great flavor and would really set your mouth on fire, another was a relish which I loved so much I put it on everything, there was also a powdered spice which I didn't try and I seem to have forgotten what was in the fourth jar.

Royal Thai is our favorite Thai restaurant in Auburn. The ingredients they use are fresh and the food is great. They have the BEST drunken noodles. I order my drunken noodles at other thai restaurants and it's just not the same. They have really good won ton soup too. It's displayed very nicely. We haven't had a bad meal here and the service is always good.

My 4 stars say that I'm a fan.  Came here on Christmas eve with my wife and daughter after we discovered our first choice in Thai restaurants in town closed early.   This was my first time at Royal Thai so I was a little apprehensive.  The decor and atmosphere were warm and cozy.  We were the only guests in the place at first but it soon started to get busy as the evening wore on.

The service was very friendly and efficient.  We ordered Pad Thai, Pineapple Fried Rice and the Yellow Curry with light spice.  The dishes were flavorful with just the right amount of seasoning for my taste.  When it comes to Thai food I know a lot of folks like it very spicy but I prefer more subtle seasoning and it was perfect.  We all enjoyed a wonderful dinner and will certainly return to sample other dishes.

I eat lunch 1-2 times a week here! It's very delish! I love the rad-nar with chicken and wide noodles! very good and fast service very friendly service too!

i also like the drunken noodle, panang curry, and chicken satay, not so fond of the sweet n sour chicken or the pad thai.

I really appreciate that people are keeping track of my reviews! Now I don't even have to check, maybe i should just devote time everyday in my mundain life to do reviews and then my reviews wouldn't be questioned. whatever.

On a wednesday afternoon I took my bride of 27 years to lunch.  The restaurant was moderately busy.  I forgot my glasses, so I had to rely on the waiter for help with ordering.  I orderd the prauns and stir fry with rice.  It was hot, hot.  The waiter said that he ordered it medium, but that their food was on the spicy side.  I absolutely loved it.  In fact, I would have given them five stars, but they were a little slow and the hot and sour soup was awful.  The stir fry and prawns with rice was so good that it brought my estimation of the restaurant to a 4 star level.  Prices are not too high for the quality of the food and full service.

Bottom Line:  It is a decent place.  The fool is acceptable and the decor is definitely pleasant.  You are not going to embarrass yourself or your date by coming here.  By the same token, don't expect fantastic Thai food either.  It is OK.

Longer version if you have time to read:  The ambiance is very pleasant.   It is a head above most Thai places.  No cheesy statutes or tacky plastic decorations.  It is tastefully decorated with dark, warm colored walls, white crisp table linens and comfortable furniture.
Now food.  I ordered a papaya salad and green curry chicken - both hallmarks of Thai food.  The papaya salad was very good.  Not too sweet, not too spicy.  The green curry chicken, however was less than mediocre.  The chicken was bland and the source was sapid.
Portions are average, on the smaller side but not too stingy either.
The service was decent.  It didn't stand out either way as good or bad - and that is average in my books.

Recommendation:  Yes.  Especially if you're there on a date.  This place is not too formal or too casual.  You can talk in a pleasant environment with OK food and OK service.   You can focus on your dinner date and your conversation.

I am very happy to not have to drive to Roseville to get good Thai food. The prices are steep, but that is in line with Roseville-Sacramento prices. (they are not the only ones in Auburn raising their prices to Sacramento's level) Food there is consistently good. The chicken is dry but once I went with the Calamari or Shrimp... I was done for.  the service is not always the best and the acoustics SUCK add something to the walls (tapestries??) to help with the sound in there. When you get a few groups of 4 in there and you cant hear yourself.
