Clean, quirky, colorful, festive, slightly overpriced Inn. Not hotel, this strange bi-level (think loft) room looks like we were in a caricature mocking of Amsterdam... or that we got lost in Disneyland and woke up in the "It's a small world" straight with the color scheme. Oh well all that aside... This place can pass for clean, and they DO allow dogs which is a big plus... BUT here are a few neg's:
-weird loft like presentation.
-weird color scheme: think lots of pukey pastels. (there's even a picket fence sort of railing for the stairs in bright light blue)
-bed upstairs (with a really hard mattress)
-upstairs TV teeny tiny.
-****** Bathroom is downstairs!!!!!!****** Too bad if you wake up in the middle of the night and need to pee... don't trip in the dark!
-old saggy sofa.
-overpriced. I believe we paid close to two bills to stay at this rinky dink.
We thought we got hooked up with a "two story suite" HA. But then we get to look into the adorable eyes of my beloved yorkie and see her happy as all hell to be with us and eat our leftover steak... and... *sigh... it's worth it.

We stayed here because my sis-in-law wanted to get the family together and she did not have enough room in her timeshare (nice place) so she booked us this place on line as it was close. Props to the sis-in-law for trying... Never- ever again, will I allow someone else to book a hotel for me and my family. What a dump. The carpet was dirty (not taking my shoes off here), the couch was saggy, and the whole place smelled very strange. At the very least you would think the cost would reflect such a place but no way they charged top dollar because it is on the main street. The only redeeming quality about the place is you get free danish and coffee which we passed on as we wanted to leave asap.

Affordable, clean and quiet. Lacks some amenities, but makes up for it with courteous service and a delicious, complimentary breakfast at Mortensen's Danishes across the street. It's prime location in Solvang makes this inn a convenient, affordable and comfortable accommodation.

I've stayed in half a dozen different hotels, inns and lodges in the Solvang/Buellton area in the past five years. In a town that's clearly driven by tourism all year long, you'll be challenged to find true "bargain" accommodations within Solvang's city borders, but I think Royal Copenhagen would qualify as one of the more affordable venues that delivers quality for the buck, despite a few misses.
The pool is a bit of a small, dirty drag. The rooms are decently sized, but cheap building construction makes them not-so-soundproof between floors. The comforts are reasonably clean, and the staff service is generally friendly and courteous, even if I've both witnessed and experienced less-than-cordial guest treatment from management. One instance was related to lack of sufficient hot water in the evening, which was handled ungraciously by the manager both that evening and the following morning (this happened a year prior to this review, so I'll spare the details to prevent rant-like outcome).
The other involved my reservation for my most recent stay, which I was asked to confirm TWICE in the weeks preceding my arrival date by a manager who was clearly intent to sell my room at a higher rate. More annoying was the fact that the second request came with some insistence that I had not confirmed my reservation... what a pest.
On a positive concluding note: they issue vouchers for free daily continental breakfast (that would be coffee and a Danish... in Danish Capital of California) from Mortensen's Bakery. Why, thank you.

Our family use to live in Solvang--since the 1930's. Now that we come through for occasional visits, we stay here. Cute, old buildings, nothing special, but it's right downtown and we've always been happy. You get a free ticket for a danish and drink for each person staying in your room--you get that across the street. Good bargain, central to Solvang's downtown--a walk to everything including Paula's Pancake House. Great bargain.
Bring your dogs!
It's not easy to find accommodations for two adults and two large retrievers so whenever we find someplace we're in seventh heaven!
The Royal Copenhagen may not be fancy, but our room was large and clean. That's what we care about. It had two queen beds, a table and chairs and even had a refrigerator in the bathroom.
They also have an enclosed garden they call the Secret Garden where you can let your dogs run. What a great idea!!
We had never been to Solvang before, so I had called all of the in-town wine tasting rooms to determine whether or not we could bring the dogs in with us while we tasted. Only one tasting room, Royal Oak, stated we were not allowed to bring the dogs in due to health code reasons. I will not get started on that comment. There are no such rules.
Anyway...
Solvang was interesting for a couple of days. It was very touristy if you like that kind of thing. We will not return any time soon, but when we do we will definitely stay at the Royal Copenhagen.
I was a bit worried about the possible noise when I saw that there were no vacancies Saturday night, however we were never disturbed throughout our two night stay. Believe me, if we had been the dogs would have been barking.
Also, we're not big pool fans just because our "boys" are usually not allowed in that area, however the pool was clean and several people were using it.
One complaint I did have was that the wireless service did not reach our room area. I would have had to sit in the pool garden area to log into the Internet. They could boost that service.
All-in-all we were pleased with our room and the services offered by the Inn. We received vouchers for bakery across the street for two mornings and a voucher to cover tasting fees at the Presidio Wine tasting room which came in handy.
We visited the following wine tasting rooms:
Presidio
Lions Peak
Vigna Ladonna
We stopped at the following wine bar:
5 Wine Bar
We ate at the following establishments or arranged carry out:
Mortensen's Bakery
Cafe Angelica
Greenhouse Cafe
I'll review all of the above separately.
