Say it ain't so! I went to see Switches and The Bravery last night at The Roxy after hitting up the Attractive Eighties Women in-store at Criminal Records. Five minutes after I walked in the door, I hear the news. LiveNation (aka Clear Channel) is shutting down The Roxy.

The Roxy can be found at 3110 Roswell road in the middle of Buckhead, right at the Peachtree Rd / Roswell Rd split. The old theater turned concert hall holds 1000 people between the downstairs standing room area and the upstairs seated balcony. With the closing of the Cotton Club, The Roxy has been offering 1/2 show set ups for smaller bands wishing to play in front of 600-700 people.

But why?
LiveNation has been progressively closing their small to mid-sized venues over the past five years or so. (Remember the Cotton Club? Now serving as The Tabernacle's smoking section and a rental location.) For huge companies like LiveNation, it just isn't as profitable for them to host smaller shows as it is for the larger shows. The more people they can fit in a room, the more opportunity for incremental profit.

How will this affect the Atlanta music scene?
For local artists, the only impact you will feel will be the increased demand by larger touring acts at your staple smaller venues. This could mean less opportunity for shows depending on the booking agent or inversely, it could offer you more opportunities for greater exposure by opening for these larger acts.

For touring artists, the market is going to be smaller and more competitive. Atlanta will likely see an even further decrease in touring artists coming through the city. Markets like Nashville and Charlotte could take the larger acts touring through the South on limited dates tours. The next size-comparable venues are The Loft and Variety Playhouse (and potentially Vinyl). They will feel the impact of this the most.

Big business trying to adapt and float. I would be curious to see what Clear Channel and LiveNation are doing to attempt to maintain relevant and dominant during the recent shifts in the music industry. Touring isn't down nor are concert sales. I hate to see The Roxy closing. It was never my favorite venue in Atlanta but it is definitely one I was always remember when thinking of Atlanta. I have attended some absolutely fantastic shows there. Peter Conlon has been using the upstairs of The Roxy as an office for some time. I expect they will either try to sell the building or use it for rentals as well. This is pretty disappointing.

The Roxy has tons of gorgeous memorabilia and has absolutely claimed itself as an Atlanta institution.  They used to book a better gander of artists than they have been over the past few years but still a very relevant venue in the Atlanta music scene.

Downs: Expensive drinks, often long bathroom lines, and the slanted floor - while great for visibility, kills my back.  Haha. Perhaps I'm just an old woman ;)

I remember really enjoying playing the Roxy.
We had perfect parking all day and a lot of time to roam around... I think I recollect a Wendy's one way and a Border's the other so between the two, I was set!
Oh and a liquor store in back which served a whole other purpose all together. Drifting violently off to sleep for starters.
I think someone made the mistake of buying Hypnotiq and after try the sugary hangover mess I pretty much boasted that I could drink an entire bottle even though I was certain it was weird enough to make me sick even if I didn't get drunk.

What else do I remember?
We were all sick so we played an acoustic set to a totally rock crowd. The bro-dude frat boys called us "fags" a bunch.
Our t.m. had a bottle of wine that I opened and sliced my finger on the cork screw in the process.
Oh and we stayed in someone's killer loft that night.

In conclusion: Hypnotiq is gross.

The Roxy is Atlanta's best small concert venue. No matter where you are in the house, you're close to the band. The last time I went however, was for Ben Folds Five when they were together(a few years ago). Last night I went for the Michael Ian Black show, totally different vibe.

Before the Roxy was dirty, grimey and smelly. Last night it was....CLEAN!? I don't know if they clean up for comedy shows/seated events, but jeez, it wasn't even like the same place.

Some good artists always come through here, I'm still pissed I missed Yngwie Malmsteen and Children of Bodom about a year ago!

I reeeealllllly hope the rumors that this place will be torn down aren't true. I go here to see people like Rooney, Ben Lee, Jack's Mannequin, Cute Is What We Aim For, Mat Kearney, Roco De Luca...etc. etc. Those bands that prefer more intimate settings or just couldn't sell out Hi-Fi Buys (THANK GOD, I hate that place).

I've seen lots and lots and lots of shows here. Oh how I love the royal purple quilted walls and the old movie theater marquis. I just love this place for reasons I can't explain. I've seen some of the most amazingly intimate performances here. If you can snag a seat in the front row of the balcony, you'll have a treat...even though you aren't down on the floor, the balcony comes out so far it almost feels like you've got a better view there. But the floor is good too!

*Crossing my fingers this isn't on the Buckhead demolition list*

This is a pretty good venue. It's probably one of the best venue's in the Buckhead area.

Whoever books shows here seems to stick with a very midrange alt. genre which is just about as "edgy" as that place needs to get.

The drinks are expensive.

The bathrooms are facing each other and its sorta creepy how the cleaning crew will leave both bathroom doors open; you can see both genders enter and exit the stalls and that's not really a good thing.

Restrooms are supposed to be like base for girls.

Fellas generally just don't give a duck. We're there for release, wash and find our gal and our friends.

I seen Sonic Youth there back in the 90's...stating that sorta debunks by intial statement about the kind of bands that play there, but then again, I imagine whoever was booking back then may not be booking now.

Soundwise, it's an old theather so it has decent to good accoustics.

Did I mention that the drinks are way too expensive?

Don't ask me how I know; ask me how I remember.
Unfortunately I remember way too much about way too much.

People, I am so ready to ditch the whole brokenheart thing and go back to the routine of a relationship.

Only this time, I gotta be much more picky.

And make sure she likes MJQ more than the Roxy.

I'm always pretty happy when a band I want to see comes to the Roxy. This place has been around forever and is of a higher quality breed than most other venues present and past in Atlanta. Right in the heart of Buckhead, it has easier parking and a great decor: huge and dark and open, with a kind of old school theater feel.

The sound here is better than several other places. It's pretty clear, if still not quite perfect. I don't know why most shows seem to be plagued with mediocre sound.

As Edward said, they seem to stick to booking midrange "alt" acts, which means that rarely there are things I want to see here. The last couple times I've been in were several years ago, once to see Interpol and another to see Danzig (heehaw). The best show I ever saw here was They Might Be Giants back in '98, during which they made the entire room turn into one long conga line.

Though it may be rare something you like comes here, you should be pleased when it does.

Not a bad little venue to see a show, but you have to deal with the Buckhead parking and traffic which always diminishes the experience for me.

I love the old movie theater marquee above the entrance, it gives the place an old, classic look as you walk in. If you need a seat for a show, good luck. It's a standing venue and even if there were seats I'm sure people would be out of them for a better view anyway.

Although I don't like the parking or traffic, there are at least a few decent places within walking distance to grab some food or a drink before heading inside for a show.

What is the deal with the Roxy?  Why is no one playing there anymore?  Or, at least, anyone I like?  This was once a great venue- attracting my favorite UK bands for many years!  I've seen The Cure, Super Furry Animals, The Verve, Portishead, Blur, The Charlatans (UK), etc.  there over the years and the old theater ambiance always seemed to enhance the experience of the show you were seeing.

I hope the previous reviewer isn't right about The Roxy being slated for demo- they can blow up the rest of old Buckhead for all I care, but this would be a great shame to lose.  It's one of the only places left that is smaller than the Tabernacle that still has that theater feel to it.

And oddly, when the stage is much higher than the crowd, you almost get this feeling of your favorite band really being gods, being so much closer to the sky than you.

While I also enjoy low stages, sometimes it makes me feel like I'm just watching some local band play when you're really watching a music icon do what they do best.  Sometimes there is nothing better than looking up the noses of your favorite singer than actually being almost eye-level to them.

This place is pretty good.  I've stood in the front.  I've stood in the back.  I can see from either position.  Did I mention I have terrible vision?  The whole seeing from the back thing definitely surprised me.  Sound is better than most places.  Some of the bands that come through are sorta crappy, but they do get some pretty amazing mildly popular indie acts whose crowds wouldn't fit into the smaller venues.  It's a bit hard to find free parking, but if you don't mind walking a bit, there's always parking on E. Andrews.  Other than that the parking people try to charge $15 on weekdays and $20 on weeknights.  I can usually get my tickets for free and even if I have to pay, that's the same cost as the show!  Ridiculous.

Nikki says it right - a great place to see bands.  From the likes of Portishead, Massive Attack, Interpol to even John Spencer Blues Xplosion, it'll host a good number of acts.  The bar situation ( tight space) somewhat sucks for a heavy drinker but nonetheless, an Atlanta institution that one must check out.

Rumor has it this venue is slated for the demolition ball in the coming year or two.  The former movie house is a great place to see touring national bands.  Shows are usually standing room only, as all the permanent seats have been removed.  The venue is non-smoking with a smoker's area positioned outside.  The beer lines can be oppressive on sell out nights, but all in all a great small venue.
