So good, it made me throw up.

The chicky is originally from the Yay and would not stay outta my ear about this place, how she used to go as a kid, how the sandys are hella good, etc, etc. So we passed through one time and grabbed some sandys to eat for lunch. I think she went the cold cut route and i thought the meatball on dutch crunch sounded like a good idea. And it was. Juicy meatballs, lotsa cheese, doused in red sauce, man, it was great. And that bread - someone needs to tell me where to find that stuff down here in So Cal, i need that in my life. Overall, the best sandy I've had in SF coming from a liquor store.

The part that made me barf:

After getting our sandys, we parked and ate in the car (mad Asian-style). My eyes were bigger than my stomach that day and i ended up saving what i couldn't scarf down for lunch the next day. Waking up early the next morning to catch my flight back to OC, i was hungry as hell and didn't have the right mind to grab something decent to put in my rumbling tummy. Except my left over sandy. So down the hatch it goes and I'm running on meatballs and bread till lunch time. Lunch rolls around and we end up at Red Robin of all places. For some reason, the chicken parm looked appetizing and i rolled with it. I demolished most of it and headed back to the plantation. Some hours pass and my stomach is a rumbling. I ask to go home citing irreconcilable differences with what i ate and I'm off to try to figure out what the hell is wrong with me. A few minutes after pulling into the garage I find myself hunched over my toilet, spewing chunks of meat and about two gallons of red sauce down the drain. Then it dawned on me - no human can possibly think to contain 3 straight meals of meat and acidic tomato-based sauce without finding themselves in some sort of weird predicament such as my own. Lesson learned.

See? So good it made me throw up!!!

I finally got to visit this place the other night to see what all the hype was about.  I must say it wasn't what I was expecting at first. I've read some of the previous reviews and agree their toasted dutch crunch bread is great. I ordered hot pastrami with all the fixings and was not disappointed. I'll be back for sure to try their other sandwiches!

P.S. Special shout out to Ms. AAA for bringing me to this place! :)

THE BEST SANDWICHES IN THE WORLD!!!!

That's pretty much the gist of it!  What else can I say?!

I always order my sandwiches with dutch crunch bread, and no one ( I mean NO ONE) toasts their bread the way Roxie does!!  I'm in heaven each and every single time I even think about it.

Don't under-estimate the power of a sandwich shop!

They have a decent veggie option. Lots of cheese, avocado and string beans, a single garbanzo and some canned mushrooms. Bizarre but tasty all the same. Had a junior with everything on dutch toasted. Will get it with no bean salad, toasted bread but unmelted cheese and extra jalepenos next time. Took on an unpleasant sweet taste after sitting around for an hour but you know, hooray for veggie options!

I will say that when I used to eat meat I had an amazing turkey and salami  on dutch toasted with everything once. Roxies is way better than SF Meat.

Let's put it this way - I drove round trip 30ish minutes in the pouring rain to get a heated turkey, swiss, on dutch crunch sandwich. We used to come here a lot during the summer months of teen sports camp. Roxie's is right across the street from Balboa Public Pool and Park. When the weather is nice, you can picnic in the park with your sandwich.

I parked around the corner, and smelled the deliciousness of sandwiches as soon as I got out of my car. I walked in a little after 1:00 and luckily for me (as it was raining) I didn't have to wait in line. I picked out some RC Cola, which is extremely hard to find in the bay area, and headed to the sandwich counter.

I ordered a junior turkey with swiss, mayo, and pickles on a dutch crunch - heated: $5.99
My 2 RC Colas - one for now, one for later: $2
I never carry cash charge (fine by me): $0.50
Waiting for my sandwich: AWESOME

I always have the most interesting and entertaining conversations in line. Everyone from the guy making my sandwich to the guy taking money to the two guys waiting in front of me in line was super friendly.

In addition to the money sandwiches, Roxie's has a great soda collection - next time, I'm getting the Welch's sparkling grape soda!

Roxie's doesn't disappoint - as always, I'll be back!

PS. Either the guy who made my sandwich thought I was a hottie, or their junior subs are ridiculously large. Though I prefer it was the first option, I'm pretty sure it was the second...

After a day of walking, we stopped by to pick up the two main specials: Roxie special (mixture of meats --ham, pastrami, smth else, and two kinds of cheeses, hot) and Simon special (turkey and pastrami with cheddar, hot) both on Dutch Crunch.  These hit the spot very nicely.  Personally, the regular sized sandwiches here are quite large, so I'll probably get the mini next time.  The olive oil and vinegar is a must, but the other sandwich items are optional since some make the bread quite soggy looking.

Around the store, there are the other convenient store basics like chips, gum, and sodas --they even sell home cleaners and the like.  Pretty good if you really need smth!

Minus one star from 5 because of the price -- two regular sandwiches alone were $18.  Since it's not everyday that I eat here, it's definitely o.k. and I am a fan of the fast service and basic, but very tasty menu.

I freaking LOVE this place.   The Simon Special is awesome and so is every other sandwich i have gotten here.

this place gets crazy busy so we always call in the order and pick it up.

I lived back east for several years and therefore am totally spoiled when it comes to hoagies and this place is yum yum yum.

The people who work here are funny and seem to be having a good time.  This is a true neighborhood gem.

Did I mention the sandwiches are really good?  because they are.

I HEART ROXIE'S SANDWICHES!!!!!

Depending on the meat you like, get that with additionals! My personal favorite, Salami with everything on it and add avocados on soft roll. Sometimes i'll switch it up a bit and get it on dutch crunch roll.

MMMmMmmm is all I can say when i hear about the sandwiches here. ;)

I've had better sandwiches (i.e. freddies and little lucas)

Roxie's sandwiches are pact full of meat, great sauce and jam packed with loads of condiments. I love how their sandwiches are so huge, but taste-wise, i've definitely had better. Maybe it's the combination of the goodies between the dutch crunch bread, but it just didn't float my boat... i think a second visit maybe in order to settle this 3 star debate.

anyways, the store looks crappy, the guys are friendly and the sandwiches are a bit pricey IMO. it's definitely worth a try if you are trying to find your sandwich niche...

i'll keep you guys posted about the very soon second visit! this is also going on my default eats list! check it out! :D

Hot dutch crunch roxie special (with everything, except mayo) - possibly the best sandwich I've ever had... I'd come to this place a lot more often if the prices were lower though. $7.99 for a regular sized sandwich is pretty high in price (yes, I'm cheap), but regardless, the taste/quality of the sandwiches here are well worth the price!

So this is the first time I've given a 5 star review.  I love Roxie's sandwiches.  I used to play volleyball at CCSF and had these sandwiches every week.  The vegetarian sandwich is delicious.  I get the junior and it's not junior at all.  I'm completely stuffed after eating one.  Get the dutch crunch, toasted.  It's absolutely amazing!  The guys there are also very nice.  Be prepared to wait during lunch or dinner time.  It's always busy.

I wanted to like this place, I really did - good ratings, word of mouth raves, etc. However, the fact that a) this place is very out of the way and b) the line is slow even when it's not long kind of killed it for me. They make decent sandwiches, that's for sure, but nothing that I would want to drive all the way back here for.

I ordered the Simon's Special on dutch crunch - a good sandwich with thinly sliced pastrami, turkey, and it's warm with gooey cheese. Definitely hits the spot when you're craving a well crafted sandwich that isn't from a oversized supermarket chain deli. While the sandwich is definitely the best place about here, it wasn't good enough for me to put up with the slow sandwich making and the very long drive. And you can't exactly eat your sandwich there (it's literally a corner store) - I saw people standing in the streets or sitting in their cars eating their sandwiches.

If I were in the neighborhood or hanging out with friends who wanted to eat here, I wouldn't hesitate to go, but on my own, I'd think twice.

Me and my friend split a turkey club and a simon's special. The turkey club was good... but not 10$'s good. I only have to say 2 words - LITTLE LUCCAS.

At little luccas you can get a sandwich twice as delicious, for around 7 bucks. IMO it's the spread that they put on the sandwiches at luccas that sets the sandwiches apart. Hot pepper and garlic sauce provides the bit of moisture that the dutch crunch needs.

If you're in the neighborhood and don't have time stop by here, otherwise little luccas all the way.

Hm dutch crunch warmed up with any meat and you can't go wrong.  I got the roast beef and it was good.  The cheese was melty and the bread had a little crunch, it was quite a good sammy.

Pros: won't disappoint, must haves: dutch crunch, warmed.

Cons: none that I can think of but I did see the guy making the sandwich from outside and he wasn't using gloves (for germaphobes out there).

About a 4.5.

It didn't amaze me, but it was still a very good sandwich, and I love that in the era (and area) of small portions, you can get a ridiculously-sized Super sandwich.

My favorite part about this place is the general unpretentious feel. Despite the fact that it's regularly rated on Yelp as the top restaurant in SF or 2nd best (behind Gary Danko), there are no "People Love Us on Yelp" stickers, Zagat, CitySearch awards, or anything.

But the walls are far from empty. Instead, the walls are lined with recognitions from local organizations for their numerous charitable efforts.

Roxie is totally out of place in San Francisco, and I love it.

Not really, but they are the best sandwiches on planet earth.

I usually get the turkey on italian (or dutch crunch if I'm feeling crazy) with everything on it, HEATED.

The guys that work there look like they're having fun and they will hit on you and make you feel special.  It's the best.

First off, let me start by saying that I am a health freak. To the point where it may not be "healthy!"

That being said, I will gladly get fat off of Roxie's! I Just had the Simon's special, and it was the best sandwich I have ever had. I'm glad my roommates and I took our pilgrimage here instead of Ike's (which I have never been too, and may never get to after having the Simon's special)!

How do they project that delicious smell of sandwiches outside of the market?  My nose drew me in on a Sunday afternoon, an odd hour (between lunch and dinner) and yet, there was a small crowd waiting for sandwiches.  Most of them ordered the meatball sandwich, so I decided to try it as well.  I learned a little more about the rolls there.  Spanish is their softest roll and it's sour.  I went with the Italian roll which is soft and toasts up very nicely.

Mmm, what a meatball sandwich (Jr: $5.99, Regular: $7.99).  They are so good at toasting their sandwiches.  The outside was very hot and toasty.  The bread was lovely and crispy on the outside while still soft inside.  The bread to fillings ratio was spot on.  The delicious meatballs flecked with generous amounts of parsley weren't too firm or too soft.  They came doused in a lovely zesty tomato sauce.  The sandwich came with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, pickles, cheese (your choice, I chose mozzarella) and jalapenos.  The veggies were fresh and unlike many places, they didn't go crazy with condiments.  While the sandwich was messy, the bread didn't get soggy.  They know how to construct a flavorful, balanced sandwich.  Everything melds together into a gooey (but not soggy), scrumptious mess.

This is one fine sandwich, one of the very best in SF.  Get one in honor of National Sandwich Month (August).

Wasn't really too impressed.  Got a medium sized "special" on dutch crunch - pastrami and chicken with cheddar with everything, hot.

The sandwich was good, nothing stellar.  Kinda disorganized behind the counter.  My bill with chips and a drink came to 11.99.  I asked if I could use a credit card.  He said "sure" then charged me 12.49.  I asked if it was more expensive to use a credit card and he said that they charge an extra .50 but he gave it back to me in cash since he "didn't want to argue about it."  I wasn't really arguing, but am against this practice in principle.  If he told me that I had to pay a fee, I'd have given him cash.

I looked it up when I got home, and THE NET says (grain of salt added, of course) that it's not legal to charge a customer a fee on CREDIT cards, only legal to charge when a customer uses a DEBIT card.  For whatever that's worth.

Anyhoo, 2 stars for my whole experience in general.  I'll stick with Ike's.

I noticed Roxie's one day while driving home (up around the block) and looked it up on yelp via iPhone and was flabbergasted -- 300+ reviews and 4.5 stars?!

Seriously? It's a convenience store turned sammich shop -- which I think is part of the amazement/attraction.

I knew I had to go the next time I was around home for lunch; 300+ yelpers can't be wrong. I came. I ate. And I am fully satisfied with the experience and the Dutch Crunch (type of bread) everyone has had a big O over (including me).

I will be a regular.

The sandwich was good, NOT great. If you want a great sandwich go to Ike's. At least there the quality justifies the higher price.
Asked the guy if they accepted credit cards, and he said 'yes', but failed to disclose the charge for using it.

Charging extra for using a credit card is just wrong!! Especially when your sandwiches are 10 bucks.

If it wasn't for my fellow yelpers, I would have had no idea this unassuming corner market would contain one of the best sandwiches in the city. Thank you yelpers!

I realized right away the secret is definitely out. This was like the Ruby Skye of sandwich joints - popular "artists", lots of people, not a lot of room. I quickly figured out the line protocol and awaited my turn.

The selection is incredible - bread, meats, toppings, you name it. Almost every combination imaginable is yours for the choosing. I went with turkey on a wheat roll, complemented by lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard, salt, pepper. It was delivered, toasted, just as ordered. And it was delicious.

Sealing the fifth star: 1) My "junior" for $5.99 was massive. I can't imagine the size of the regular ($7.99) or super ($11.99). And 2) the service. Confident and friendly. These guys know what they are doing. And they are funny. When I asked what kind of bread the brick oven was, the guy held it up, smiled, said it was a roll so hard it could kill a man. Noted.

Alright ya'll.  I've been going to Roxie's for about 10 years now.  I'm originally from southern California, and I can tell you, WE HAVE NOTHING LIKE THIS DOWN THERE.  In fact, we don't even know what dutch crunch is.  But ya, I would visit San Franciso and would ALWAYS get Roxie's before I went home.

Now I live up here, and I'm so stoked that I can ride my bike to Roxie's every day if I wanted.

When you first walk in, I guarantee you'll say to yourself, "wtf, this place is getting 5 stars on yelp!?" but trust me, you'll believe it once you bite into the sandwich.

Wait in line, and they'll ask who's next, then just order your sandwich.  It's not like Subway or whatever where the wait for you pick what you want, just tell them the size of the sandwich, what type (i.e. pastrami, tuna, turkey, etc.), what type of bread (i.e. dutch crunch, sourdough, etc.), what type of cheese, and what other things (i.e. jalapenos, pepperoncini's, onion's tomato, etc.), if you want it heated (which I highly reccomend), and then wait in line to pay, and wah-la.

The people that work there are super nice too, granted they look like they can be pissed off.

I either get a regular Simon Special (pastrami AND turkey) on dutch, or a regular tuna on dutch with provolone and everything on it.

Oh ya, the "junior" size is still a nice sized sandwich, but if you're extra hungry, go for the "regular" size.  And if you want enough sandwich for about 3 servings, go with the "large" size, trust me, that size is large.

For the record, I want to give this place a 4.5 stars but can't have everything we want, can we? =P

Anyways....

Checked out this place today in response to a review I did for Ike's Place. (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) First off, I like how Roxie is in a fairly secluded place. You wouldn't expect to find a great sandwich place in a grocery store. This made the whole experience that more intriguing, making me wonder more how great of a sandwich it could be. I must say that they did not disappoint. I ordered a hot Roxie Special on Dutch Crunch and I was pleased with the results. The flavors of the meats and condiments really worked well together with the bread. The guy who rang me up was very friendly and chatted it up with some of his regular customers. Though it took a little while for the sandwich to be made, it was definitely worth it.

This place is no Ike's, which I still stand by is one of the best places in the city but Roxie is a place everyone should check out.

The real San Francisco Treat is a Roxie's Sandwich.  I grew up eating these sandwiches and now my kids are growing up eating them as well.  I absolutely love the dutch crunch bread and depending on my mood I would get either a meatball on provolone, turkey on swiss or a pastrami with jack.  it's a small place so call in your order and pick it up.

I have never had a sandwich that has lived up to one by Roxie's. And you will not know what a real sandwich is until you have been here.

I've been coming here since I was in grade school. It started one summer, when my cousins and I began taking lessons at the swimming pool across the street. We'd stop by Roxie's to get two sandwiches to share between the four of us. I have very good childhood memories of Roxie's, the big man who'd always be slicing lettuce on the big machine near the register, the police who'd stop by the chit chat, the old ladies who came by to pick up small groceries, and the regulars who craved a sandwich by Roxie's.

It's so rare to find a place that offers Dutch Crunch bread, I discovered  as I was trying out other sandwich places. No other warm, toasty bread with melted cheese and a heaping of meat could satisfy me like this little store on San Jose Ave.

Yum Yum!  I didn't think I was that hungry when my friend brought me here but he convinced me to get the Regular Size Hot Patrami on Dutch Crunch.  Guess he was right cause I ended up scarfing it down quicker than him.  I've been here in the past but didn't make my way back again until recently.  Deli Sandwiches are definitely on my crave lists off and on and I will certainly try to put Roxie's into the rotation a little more often.

Sandwich was $7.99.  They also have a mini size for a little less and a large size for a little more.  And the staff there were all very friendly...

Thanks for that GREAT Sandwich Guys!
