1st time here and I be coming back
    (with my own coffee)

My boyfriend got the classic Breakfast with turkey sausage and regular bacon and home fries
-------everything was delicious especial the bacon (it was soo good I couldn't just have one bite)

I got buttermilk pancakes with sausage, the pancakes are made from scratch and the best I have had in years.,...the sausage was a little fatty for me but still made very well.

The only thing I would say is the coffee sucks point blank.... Next time I'm bringing my own so I can enjoy my coffee with my breakfast.

The food came out extremely HOT!!

As a recently arrived resident of West Roxbury (I think I'm technically considered gentrifying scum), I was happy to see that Rox Diner is a nice place to go.

The little lady, the babynugget and I somehow managed to perfectly time our Sunday morning visit to this place during mass (we're also *godless* gentrifying scum), so we had no trouble getting a table while everybody else in town was feelin' guilty in a pew -- a distinct benefit of living in an Irish Catholic neighborhood.

The wait staff were incredibly sweet and, further to their credit, cooed at the Nugget to the exclusion of the uglier children in the room.

My breakfast sandwich (with tomato!) was greasy, gooey, crumbly and therefore satisfying, and even the healthy omelet was tasty.  Coffee was not-so-great, and the layout of the dining area is cramped, but I like the place overall.

I'm always on the lookout for a good breakfast place, and have a special place in my heart for diners, so the Rox Diner was a must try.

It really isn't a diner, in the classic sense.  No old rail road car or stainless steel exterior.  It is a very small store front that serves a decent breakfast.   And it really is small.  Be prepared to get to know your fellow diners because there may be only 18 inches separating you.

They offer a decent amount of choices, from the usual omelette's and pancakes, to Irish Breakfast.  I love a good hash and they had a turkey hash on the menu, something you don't see at a lot of places, but when done well can be great.  Their version was very light, almost ground to a smooth consistency.  It was seasoned well, but not something I would order again.  Hash should have some chunks in it.

Their omelette's were solid, definitely hitting the spot.  Service and prices were very strong.   Overall a three star stop.

Using Yelps directions that dropped us into the middle of a residential area five minutes from the diners actual location has nothing to do with the loss of a star.
The food was very good with lots of interesting options that not every place offers. Nutella & Banana French Toast was very good. Had a egg, smoked Gouda Cheese, bacon and sliced red onion sandwich with grilled brioche bread. I liked my sandwich and everything we ordered. Traveled over an hour to get there and we were starving. A "are you guys new and if so how did you hear about us" would have been nice. Thank you come back again? An effort to make new customers regulars would have been a nice touch. I felt it was a Ruby Tuesdays kind of experience. I traveled over an hour for breakfast on my one day off a week to support and eat in an independent owner operated business. That's all that was lacking other than that the food is great.

    Again why isn't there a 3.5 star?

We hit up this place while driving around West Roxbury looking for a place to snack. I never went there as it used to be called Auntie B's so we decided to try it.

The average age when we walked in was probably in the 50s so we felt very young. Not a bad thing but hearing elderly people greet each other every 2 minutes because they all know each other can be a little straining to the atmosphere.

I ordered the California Club with onion rings and my girlfriend had the Avocado, Pecan, Pear, Goat Cheese salad with a side of home fries. The food came pretty quick and the serving size was pretty good.

My club was a little short of amazing. The crispy bacon definitely brings out the turkey and the avocado. The extra piece of toasted rye bread was a good addition too. The only down point was I asked for red onions on it, but they forgot.

The salad according to my girlfriend was delicious. I'm not a big fan of salads...

This is a nice cozy place but it gets crowded very fast. The service is friendly but gets slow at times due to the crowding. A cheap eat and definitely worth coming.

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars for Rox. On the one hand, everything I've tried there has been tasty. But on the other hand, when ordering with other people the food has a tendency to arrive at different times (i.e. I get my food, 2 minutes later someone else gets there's, 5 minutes later the third person gets their meal).

The atmosphere is cozy, but cozy becomes cramped and crowded when this place is busy. The service is friendly and the menu offerings are ample. The prices are higher than your average breakfast/brunch/lunch joint but you get what you pay for. I'd rather pay more and come to Rox than go to the Westbury.

If you're by yourself and looking for breakfast/brunch/lunch in West Roxbury you won't find much (if any) better than Rox. If you're with other people or claustrophobic you many want to look elsewhere.

Great place for breakfast. The avocado, goat cheese and pear omelet was delicious. The french toast was nice and fluffy. Orange juice was fresh squeezed! Lots of great options and best of all, they source locally. Come hungry!

The only downfall is the place is very small and there is normally a wait on weekend mornings.

The service is great. Our server was super nice. I will be back!

In an unprecedented turn of events, Yelp has steered me wrong. I was very excited to make the drive out to Roxbury to try out this diner and walk around the Arboretum (which never disappoints). The food was quite average... not bad, but when the potatoes are by far the best tasting thing on the plate, it's not good.

The worst part of our breakfast here was the service. It's not a big place, and it seemed that the number of servers was ample. We may have just gotten a bad draw, but she was slloooowwwww, unfriendly, and possibly mute. After no coffee refills and a drive-by check drop off, I finally asked another server to please take our money. My wife and child had long since went outside out of the bordedom of waiting. The worst part is that there were people waiting for a table.

We will not return here, and the owner seriously needs to train the staff.

I feel bad about coming here for the last several years and just getting around to writing a review now. Shame on me.
This is a neighborhood gem. Service is fast, food is fresh, and everything is cheap! I recommend one of the sandwich creations, the closer is my favorite. These offer are a little less food, which I recommend as the portions here are massive. They have fresh squeezed OJ and actually good ice coffee. It's impossible to find a place with good breakfast and good coffee. West Rox is definitely the exception. I hope to some day try dinner. This has been my go to for breakfast.

    Absolutely delicious!!!

I ordered one of the specials for today. It was Maine Lobster Benny. A little pricey ($16) but once I read the description I couldnt help myself. English Muffin topped with baby spinach, mounds of lobster meat, two poached eggs and an amazing Hollandaise sauce. It was as great as it sounds. And i was served with perfectly cooked home fries.

My fella had my second choice. Tahitian French Toast. Coconut crusted brioche french toast stuffed with mango. I had to steal some. The coconut was toasted and tasty and went amzing well with the creamy french toast. And the mango was sweet, tangy and juicy. Absolutely brilliant.

The only complaint we have is that the coffee was weak. But Ive come to expect that at diners and restaurant. Why not serve a bold blend??

Also in the end the price tag was a bit much for breakfast. With tip the total came to $42 for the two of us. But the, I had the lobster.

When we arrived there was a line but it moved fairly quickly. We arrived at 1030 on Fathers Day. Im surprised it wasnt a longer wait. But considering how quickly our food came out Im not surprised how quickly the line moved.

Cant wait to go back! Definitely a new favorite for us

The burgers are certified humane, hormone free, superior aged Meyer Angus beef. It really is raised at the same ranch and is super tasty. They've got weekly specials or you create your own,
Beer battered rings are created fresh to order. Try them with the truffled ketchup or the paprika mayonnaise. The condiments are amazing! I don't feel I've raved about ketchup before.

    Pros:
    - super yummy lobster benny...fabulous Hollandaise sauce and absolutely worth the price
    - cute diner with cute decor in a cute area (yep, all around cute)

    Cons:
    - my husband's meal was delivered 5 minutes after mine (no indication as to when his would arrive when mine was delivered)
    - only half of my husband's meal arrived upon first delivery (was missing eggs and toast) with no explanation as to when the rest of his meal would arrive.  the eggs/toast delivery was approx 3-5 minutes later.  weird.
    - the place is small, so there is always a line spilling out onto the sidewalk.  on a hot summer day without shade, the wait for a table is sweaty!
    - again, the place is small, so as you eat your meal, you have hungry diners waiting less than 2-3 ft away from you begging you (with their eyes) to finish up your meal so they can steal your seat.

The food was fab (once it was actually delivered) but not sure we can deal with the poor service or wait outdoors in the heat again!

So I love the Rox Diner.

We've been several times for brunch and I love the nutella and banana french toast.  I also have gotten the "one heck of a breakfast sandwich", which is yummy.  Like most breakfast places, there seems to be an infinite number of ways to combine eggs, meat, and pancakes but they are very helpful in finding the easiest and cheapest option.

We went once for dinner and I had a great burger (farmer something) and my gentleman friend had fish tacos.

Good food, good prices, clean, friendly.  The Rox Diner is great.

While living in Boston, I searched and searched for the perfect breakfast place to enjoy great food and cheap prices.  I found that at the Rox Diner.  It is the tiniest place you'll go to for breakfast in West Roxbury but the food is AMAZING!  I haven't had something off that menu that I didn't like and I keep coming back!  They make their pancakes from scratch and you get the fluffiest, largest that you can think of.  You have to come during the week because it just gets too crowded during the weekend and you get better service because there won't be as many people (work, school, etc.) and the waiters can actually move around without crashing into someone.  I was so glad I found the place because I couldn't stand going to IHOP all the time when I wanted to eat out for breakfast!  Thanks Rox Diner for saving me!!!

Just moved to the area, and the boy and I were in the mood for breakfast in bed.  However, I have no pots or pans, and definitely no eggs, bacon etc.  Yelp solves all problems!
Found Rox online, called in an order and drove over to pick it up.  The menu options at this place is key!  We wanted to try everything!  Instead ended up with:
Banana and Nutella French Toast -  more like a dessert than breakfast, but unreal anyways!
Eggs Bolly - It is eggs benedict with corned beef hash instead of ham.  Very good (even for takeout!) Hollandaise rocked, and corned beef hash had great flavor
Eggs and Sausage - Its the boy's "go-to" order for judging a new restaurant.  He loved it, and that says a lot.  Oh! and the hash browns that come with it were AMAZING!
Fresh squeezed OJ - So much better than stuff from the carton!

we will be back for sure...now if only we would convince them to deliver my Sunday mornings would be perfect!

Hands down, the BEST breakfast I've ever had!
I'm asian, so our breakfast is pretty much like our dinner, a bowl of rice and a dish to go with it (at least thats how i eat my asian breakfast). When i found this hidden jewel right next to my cousin's nail salon(surprise!) i was excited yet skeptical because I've never had a "real" american breakfast. My first order at Rox was an Al's Forklift, which consists of 3 eggs, 4 pieces of Bacon, 3 sausages and ham and i enjoyed every bite of that forklift. my second order, which i just finished about 10 minutes prior to writing this review, was a breakfast combo called The Rox (2 eggs, 2 sausages, 2 pieces of bacon and a short brioche french toast), it kind of tasted like Al's forklift but i like it better than the Al's forklift since it has the brioche french toast. Overall, SUPPER DUPPER great place for breakfast!

Awesome local spot. I go here regularly more than any other place in the city. The pancakes and french toast are good. The avocado, pear and goat cheese omelette is a must have. The potatoes are good. The Fornax peasant bread is good. The service is always friendly. Glad they serve dinner now. The burgers are good. All in all just a solid little spot. I've been enjoying it since it was Auntie B's. Great t shirts - Bread Zeppelin and Scramblin Man. Place has always been funky and fun. They've got framed comic books on the walls.  All natural meat and eggs shows that this place is not your average diner.

Don't be misled by the name, your past experiences or other expectations for "diner food," as some other reviewers seem to have been.

This isn't your typical neon and chrome clad diner with greasy menus and greasier food.  THE best brunch I've had since moving to Boston from Philly 2.5 years ago.  Easily bests places both nearby (Centre Street Cafe - seriously why the line???, Sorrella's), and far more expensive (Aquitaine).   They just got it right.  Well worth the short drive to W.Roxbury.

Cute, comfortable, friendly staff and delicious food and great presentation.  Brunch staples done with care and creative specials.

We had the Maryland Crab Cakes Eggs Benedict and the Banana and Nutella Stuffed Brioche French Toast.  Both were perfectly prepared and delicious!

Will be going back for brunch and their Thursday burger night!

It's always so nice when a local joint knows that in addition to great food they need great service to keep people coming back.

There are lots of choices for breakfast and lunch in the Roslindale/West Roxbury area.  What really sets Rox Diner apart is the waitstaff.

Best. Breakfast. Ever. I'm drooling just thinking about it.

I've never had anything at Rox Diner that I didn't love. It's everything I look for in a diner: cheap, delicious, excellent service and kid-friendly (complete with mickey mouse pancakes or, in the winter, snowmen).

The only thing that bums me out is the wait on some weekend mornings but that can't really be helped with food that good and a space so small.

I haven't had dinner there yet but their lunch is great as well. (Tip: I'm not a chicken salad person but my friend, who is a HUGE chicken salad fan, said that theirs is the best he's had.)

In short: this place makes my tummy happy. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

What a gem. Yes, this place is tiny, but, fortunately for me, I usually go for late breakfast on a weekday. The food is great and so is the service. There is usually several regulars who seem to eat here every day - always a good sign. The menu is huge and its all good. I'm a big fan of the Italian Job (poached eggs on top of buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes, toast and fresh basil). Have not tried the lunch items but my girlfriend loves their sandwiches. The fries could be cooked a little longer - but if you ask for them extra crispy they are yummy enough. All in all a neighborhood gem. If you love diners, try this one.

Hands down the best breakfast in the Westie/Rozzie/JP area. Everything they make is great. I have a tough time choosing between the turkey hash and the tahitian french toast. However, the service continues to let me down. The place is way too small to be ignored as often as I've been while waiting to be seated. On two occasions I've had to go elsewhere. This place is ideal on the weekdays. The weekend crowd must overwhelm the staff.

If you're looking to beef up the t-shirt collection they even have some original work that staff have designed.

Five stars are in the picture, but I've only been there twice, but both times have been solid experiences.   Food is cooked to order and is quite tasty, the menu's got some creative options(say YES to the nutella french toast!!) and prices are quite reasonable.  They even serve freshly squeezed orange juice from the space-aged contraption in the kitchen.

The place isn't terribly big and they get pretty busy on weekends so set expectations accordingly.  It's still worth the wait though and if you got a sweet tooth to satisfy, Sugar bakery is right across the street!(Review forthcoming)

Having recently moved to the neighborhood Rox Diner's definitely made the transition in much smoother!

My partner and I spotted Auntie B's Place and thought we would give it a whirl and liked it.  I had the Isabela which is,1 silver dollar pancake, 1 egg any style, 2 strips of bacon w/ FANTASTIC peasant toast and a switch of fruit for home-fries.  My partner had the West Roxbury - brioche french toast, 2 eggs any style, 2 bacon strips, 2 sausage links and the same fantastic toast and switch of fruit instead of home-fries.  The coffee wasn't too bad, the service was great for how busy they were and we loved the real maple syrup offered!!

We would go back again, but we aren't in a rush to return.

So, this place isn't bad, but neither is it good. It seems to be the product of opposing forces. Here's what I mean: diners are cool because they aren't. They are moderately dingy, cheap, big, carelessly waitressed, and smell like fry oil. They are so hard to love they end up being like those dogs that are so ugly they are adorable.

Flash to the present: it started with small-producer beer: take something kind of lowbrow, and infuse it with enough quality to make it awesome (thanks, Anchor Steam!). It's happened to bistros, sandwiches, charcuterie, take-out Chinese food, you name it, and here is the diner version. Self-consciously a little hipper, more stylish, having better ingredients etc., but this particular iteration still has mediocre service, ok-but-not-amazing food, and just some detail work (the chairs are already scratching the hell out of the newly painted walls: the runner is just not in the right spot for the furniture) that is lacking. It's like a more expensive, sorta-better diner, which puts it directly in competition with lower-mid priced family dining aka TGI Fridays, who simply have more capital to expend on random details to please people in that price point.

Again, not bad, and who knows, with a little practice, it may even become what it's trying to be. Here's hoping it does.

This sweet spot strikes a balance between old-school classic and slightly gussied-up charmer.

First, they take a no frills perfect diner.  Then they add great locally baked bread, hormone free breakfast meats, and excellent french toast and omlette specials.  They use old comic books to make the menus, have funny artwork and a series of well named specials (Scramblin' Man etc.)  The portions are generous, the menu extensive and the prices seem great (about half that of Centre St. Cafe in JP).

Sure, there are a few things they lack--weak coffee, no fresh squeeze oj, great pancakes but no waffles, and you pay extra for real maple syrup. The physical space is kinda cramped.  I respect these things because they show that this isn't some fancy joint.

Beyond all the specifics, they love what they do and I can prove it:  the first time I went in was a mid-day weekend with friends.  One friend elected to order a lunch item-- humbly entitled the world's best grilled cheese sandwich.  Seeing that other items including avocado and grilled mushrooms and onions, he asked if he'd be pushing his luck to include these things.  They said "heck no" (and seem like a place that would always substitute if they could).  He happened to walk through the kitchen (heading to the restroom) as the waitress read his order to the chef/owners.   When she described what he wanted, the owners said "niiiice" with approving gusto.  It's good to see folks who appreciate and respect the kind of food they make.

They can get quite busy on weekend brunch times but they open super early and are usually mellow during the week.   If you see someone sitting in a booth, foolishly grinning either from food coma or a full-blown diner reverie,  say hi, it's probably me.

Ok, you've won me back.  Starting with the sincere letter from the owner apologizing for the bad service after my bad review and ending with the excellent breakfast we had there this weekend.  We're back!

I heard such great things about the Rox Diner that I had been really wanting to try it. Boy, was I happy that I did!!  The food was so delicious!  Everyone in my part was quite satisfied.  Their menu is quite eclectic and they many options to choose from.  I enjoyed the Pear, Avocado, and goat cheese omelet, it was denoted "fan favorite".  The service was also very good.  I will definitely be going back!

I heard on NPR recently that small business is one of the only segments of our economy that continues to grow in the current (crummy) climate. One breakfast at Auntie B's Place, and you'll understand why.

    1. Great food. The menu is expansive, with lots of new takes on old favorites (witty titles like Scrambling Man and Gentleman Jim will make you smile). Our waitress suggested Tahitian French Toast, a special that didn't make it on menu. Brioche french toast stuffed with fresh sliced mango encased in a coating of shredded coconut? Yes, please!  As soon as I heard the words mango and coconut, I was sold. So was my husband. We both ordered it. Woah. Yum. It was soft and crunchy with the perfect hint of sweetness tempered by the tartness of the mango. Does it get any better? Our meal went like this: Nom nom nom nom, oh wait must eat home fry, nom nom mango, ooooh brioche coconut. BACON! Nom nom. Damn, I'm full. "Mango is a seriously underutilized fruit," my husband commented between bites. This take on french toast certainly makes the most of it.

    2. Great prices. Breakfast for two, including coffee, juice and a side will run you less than $20, depending on what you get. Portions were very generous; enough so that we were able to take 3 full stuffed slices of french toast with us to the beach. They also serve lunch at similarly friendly prices.

    3. Great atmosphere. Auntie B's Place is not slick. It is not new. It is a neighborhood joint with vinyl booths, a breakfast bar, framed pictures of Red Sox heroes, and a chalkboard menu on the wall behind the counter. It also has a friendly staff, who "God bless you" if you sneeze, lots of local families enjoying good food and each other, and, if you're lucky, "Copacabana" playing on the radio.

In the interest of full disclosure: I know one of the co-owners. Also in the interest of full disclosure: if I didn't like the food as much as I did, I wouldn't have bothered Yelping about it.

One thing I have learned living in West Roxbury area...there is no shortage of breakfast places.  And I couldn't be happier!  Rox Diner is amazing, but get there early.  Or you will be waiting outside.  Its tiny, but quick and efficient.  The staff is awesome and friendly even when its crazy hectic in there.  The banana nutella stuffed french toast was incredible.  Every time I have been here I have had something more amazing than the last time.  And now they are open for dinner too.  Hooray!

The usual rule is "no three-star reviews."  If I don't have strong feelings about a spot, one way or another, why write about it at all?

Well, in the case of Auntie B's, there are strong arguments for both a positive and negative review.

Auntie B has a lot of soft variables going for it.  It's a thimble-sized joint right on the main drag.  It's like one of those New York apartments where you can flip your omelet while sitting on the toilet.  One very adroit and spunky woman (Auntie B, is that you?) runs around like the Tasmanian Devil while refreshing your coffee and getting your eggs.  There is cuteness and pluck to spare!  The coffee's pretty good too.

Alas, the food's nothing to write home about.  What can you do?  Let's face it, going out for breakfast isn't always the best idea.  Most breakfast foods are super-simple to make at home.  You can save time and money at home and spend both of those when you go out to FancyDinner.  (Making dinner is exhausting and there's more chance you'll screw it up.)

You won't go very wrong with Auntie B's but, I'm going to be honest, this is hardly on par with Columbus discovering America.

Now under new management!  Get in there and show Johnny some support...order 1 of everything!  This place is everything a neighborhood diner should be and that is evidenced by the fact that its frequented by cops, firefighters and local politicians.  Some members of red-sox nation (who shall remain nameless) have also been spotted here as of late.

Try it this weekend for a lovely brunch!

I've lived in West Roxbury for two years and never tried Auntie B's because I assumed it would be just another greasy diner with mediocre food. After a pastry chef friend told me the food is really good I decided to give it a try. Wow! The menu is very expansive and creative. I had a tomato, garlic and smoked Gouda omelet (delicious) and blackberry with walnut pancakes. I don't even really like pancakes but these were amazing. There is a wide variety of pancake/french toast offerings and they all look sublime.

I'm very excited to have such a great breakfast place so close by.
