One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Ok, so I love Indian food and I love little hole in the wall places to find them because those always seem to be the hidden gems. But this place is far from being a hole in the wall or a hidden gem, but a well known diamond. Decor was contemporary and stylish, dim lighting but, comfortable atmosphere. It was pretty empty walking in but, about 20 minutes later the place was packed. Tandori and Goat Rice Dish was to die for and the Naan couldnt be any fresher. When you get your dishes you tend to think, what small portions but, it is very filling. The flavors from the dishes in front of you and the aroma from the dishes next to you makes you want to order one of everything thing on the menu.
The only thing i wished was that they had given me a big basket of Naan!
yummy!
roti was delicious - wonderful chewy texture. we tried plain and goat's cheese - both great. we shared a vergetarian thali and that was enough for both of us (we weren't super hungry).
the chai was lovely too. and the rice pudding dessert was divine.
service was excellent, price reasonable - very happy customers.
Yes, there is one within walking distance of my condo. But there is something about dining at this location that actually makes it feel you are "dining out".
I am not a superknowallaboutIndianfoodexpert kinda guy. But I do know what I like, and Roti is what I like. Is it authentic? Probably not. But the food seems fresh and nicely prepared. The menu is extensive and I highly recommend that you go with someone who knows the cuisine, as usually I do not choose wisely.
A couple of reviewers mentioned that the tandoori duck was somewhat of a miss. I have to say, I wasn't that thrilled with it but I must preface and tell you in advance that I am not usually a fan of duck. Daffy Duck yes, Tandoori Duck no.
Don't expect a super high end dining experience, but this a nice spot to please a crowd looking for something different.
This is a tough one. I have been consistently disappointed with Roti, but went back on multiple occasions to give it another shot. The food is phenomenal, but the service is horrible. It's because of the food that I gave them 2 yelps instead of one.
I don't really blame the waiters, who are all young and bubbly. Those oldest one couldn't have been older than 20. The thing is they are seriously understaffed in the kitchen. It wasn't a busy night last night, and there was one cook in the kitchen. 20 minutes after placing our order, I saw the entire wait staff waiting around for food to come from the kitchen. They have an open kitchen so you can see what's going on. These guys were ready and willing to work (they were literally jumping around), but there wasn't food to put out.
Last night, my girlfriend and I went here for the fourth, and likely the final time. We were seated right away, and ordered, but waited 30 minutes for our food. At the end of the meal, I had to ask myself if the food was worth the wait. The meat is super high quality and the portions are good sized, and the wait staff is super friendly, but at the end of the day, it just wasn't enough. .
Everyone knows you can get good quality Indian food in San Francisco fairly cheap. Roti is a higher end Indian restaurant. Clean, well lit, and in a great neighborhood. Unfortunately this is a good place to go BEFORE you're hungry, because by the time the food arrives, you'll be starving.
I had been wanting to try Roti after seeing the restaurant featured on KQED. So the perfect night arrived - a mellow Friday evening with no plans and no food in the house. So, my husband and I decided to try Roti. And what's more, we could ride the Muni there (it's a block from the West Portal station).
Here's the breakdown: The food is good if you want western-style Indian food. I personally like western-style Indian food because the meat is typically of higher quality than traditional Indian restaurants. We ordered tandoori lamb, chicken korma, okra, rice and goat cheese naan.
So I liked the food, but the prices are so incredibly high. I do not mind paying for high quality, but in this instance I would have rather paid much much less for traditional Indian food. Our bill was just under $100 (for two people with one glass of wine each).
A few other things:
- we had to wait about 45 minutes for our food to arrive
- one of the waiters spilled our mango chutney all over my shoe upon serving it
- the atmosphere is lacking a "homey" feel and it was too loud to talk to my date, so we just sat and smiled at each other
- the chicken korma for $22 had about five pieces of one inch square cubes of meat and tons of sauce
I would not go back. When I want Indian, I am sticking to the "real" Indian spots at cheap prices. But to finish off on a positive note, the food was definitely good (although my hubby and I have slightly different tastes for some cuisines, and he did not like the food here). I have to go with 2 stars due to the prices alone.
Went there about a month ago, didn't have a reservation, and without going into details, after waiting for more than one hour, the head waiter told us there was still one person ahead of us; ten minutes later, he says, "sorry, we made a mistake, there are two groups ahead of you", so we decided to leave, went to a pizza place next door, were immediately seated, and as soon as we sat down, the guy from Roti called to say they had a table for us. of course we didn't go back that night.
Last night we decided to give them another chance, and made a reservation this time. The food was great, we paid, went to see a movie next door, and when we were coming out of the theater a couple of hours later and getting into our car, someone from the restaurant called to say they accidentally voided the charge on our card and asked for my credit card info OVER THE PHONE. If I had been home I would have said "screw you", but luckily for that guy we were right outside. We went in and paid, but are probably not going back again.
This morning I went to their website to see if I could find an email address to write to and suggest they get a real restaurant manager instead of having the place run by teenagers. The only email they have listed is "rotinews@yahoo.com", which is like their newsletter or something. I sent them a rather long message (the two experience above, with more details), and a while later, I got a notification that my email bounced:
"Sorry your message to rotinews@yahoo.com cannot be delivered. This account has been disabled or discontinued ."
Great.
Don't go there if customer service is important to you at all.
It's good, but I hate to admit that the Burlingame location is a tad bit better. The chicken tikka masala was a little more watery than the B-game location and it had a more tandoor/smoked taste to the tikka masala sauce. The spinach with lentils was also good, but somehow the B-game location has more "omphf" to it.
I do like how they give generous pours of wine.
Service was good.
But I might just drive another 15 min and go to the B-game location...
Roti was the most expensive southern indian restaurant I went to by far. For three people, we spend over $70 in food. However, I found some food and service was not up to par.
I would give a two star because:
1) The Chicken Tikki Masala is like the "basics" for indian cuisine but it was not as tasty as some other reviews were talking about! The meat was not cooked like other places and it taste like the dry salad chicken meat... For the price tag, I was expecting much more from the sauce and unfortunately it was not as tasty as I would like it to be. The food was served in white plate that cools down quite fast.
2) Service was bad. Maybe they don't welcome "non-white" people going for their business? I requested to have my table wiped because there were a lot of crumbs from the samosas... The waitress who picked up the plate pointed that to another person, went back to the cashier area and talked to another person pointing at our table. This simple task was not done and it was very unpleasant for me to continue my meal at that point on.
I did not receive enough attention and the staff felt lazy and unhappy. My concern from a business stand point was: There were many staff in this restaurant and some of them didn't look like they were busy compare to the number of tables. If the manager in this business was nice enough not to cut jobs at this low economy, shouldn't the staff play out their effort in rewarding the manager's kindness?
However, I decided to give a third star because:
1) The Roti mixed Tandoori was very good. The portion for salmon probably worth half of the price for this dish. It was cooked perfectly and not over cooked at all. There was also a small piece of chicken that tasted much better than the one in Tikki Masala. The beef was also small piece and it was cooked 80% which I liked it that way. The lamb was made into a sausage and had a very strong smell with it. If you don't like your lamb to be smelly, this dish might not be an option for you.
2) The samosas was also excellent. The crust was so crispy and it was one of the better samosas I tried. I would rather it has three smaller piece than two big ones because I enjoyed the outside more than the fillings. I also wish that there can be other options for samosas but I only see one from the menu.
The food wasn't awful, but not great either. The paneer in my boyfriend's dish was not fried first which made it very bland although the sauce was nice.
My tandoori duck was okay, but really not worth the price. It was so over-cooked and over-seasoned, that it could have been just about any kind of meat in there.
We both ordered salted Lassi which was also very bland, thin and didn't taste like it was salted (just like drinking watered down yogurt). The bread was good and the ambiance is really nice.
My boyfriend is Indian and has cooked a lot for me and taken me to some really authentic Indian restaurants near Washington, DC. This one just didn't cut it for us.
This place is pretty yummy. I feel like this was the restaurant that taught me what Indian Food is supposed to taste like. The food was very flavorful and spicy. Loved their Mango Lassi!
It's a little on the pricey side, but if you'd like some really good indian food, this is the spot.
Enjoyed everything about Roti.
Love its West Portal location - low-key and easy to park. The ambiance is warm, dishes deliciously flavorful, pricing reasonable for both food and wine. Service is good, unobtrusive.
Definitely an easy spot to return to ;)
This is a hip place and I've received good service every time I've been here. This last time I was super late to dinner with my friends because I was maneuvering another friend through the wonderful Kaiser complexes on Geary. MY friends had a table at the window and because they sat around for 45 minutes waiting for me, we were asked to move to accommodate a large party. They were cordial, and ended up giving us a free dessert for our inconvenience. That was cool since I'm the one who messed up their schedule.
The food is good! However, they ordered 5 dishes. and they all tasted pretty much the same to me. I can't even tell you what was ordered. I know one was a chicken tika marsala (sic).
My tastebuds are probably dead because even places I loved before aren't spicy enough any more. I smoke nothing so that's not the culprit.
Great Indian food!
Many of my Indian friends say it's the best in the city!
Very Americanized Indian food. Definitely not authentic but I would recommend it as a beginner's Indian food restaurant. Service is par. Chai tastes like it comes from Starbucks. Ambiance is awesome. And the music choice is terrible. No bistro or Indian restaurant would play
Techno. For more authentic, maybe try Masala on 9th and Lincoln. It's my fav still. San Francisco best is still likely Shalomar. Bon appetite.
Real rating: 2.5 stars.
I am not a big Indian food fan as some of the spices just don't seem to agree with me, but a few colleagues wanted Indian so off we go. 6 of us went for lunch on a weekday at 12 noon. Roti was not crowded for lunch. Place is very nicely decorated and seemed very clean and well mannered. We ordered the mixed tandoori plate, a lamb curry, an eggplant curry, mixed bread plate (with Roti and Naan), saffron rice, mango chutney, and a cucumber yogurt. We also grabbed some Indian lemonade.
The Tandoori plate was cooked well, good but not great flavor. The lamb curry was very spicy but had nice flavor. The eggplant curry was everyone's favorite- tender but not mushy. Nice mouth feel and spice. My favorites were the basics; I thought the rice was very good and the Naan was excellent. I also really loved the Indian lemonade- think lemonade with some mint and herbs.
However I need to deduct a half star for each point below:
1) curries were too spicy for some of our party. Server never asked or consulted us on our spicy comfort level. Place was not crowded so I think there should have been better dialogue.
2) Prices are high, portions are small. Considering your basic entree is between $14-$20 and you have to order rice and accompaniments
extra, the bill adds up.
3) Tagging onto the above, we noticed that another customer ordered a plate that seemed to have an entree, rice and naan on it. We asked what it was and was told by the waiter that it was a combo special from their lunch specials menu, which he said he didn't give us since he figured we would order entrees together 'family style'. This really didn't sit well with me - I thought it was totally unprofessional - next time let the customer decide, not you!
So Roti on food alone would have earned 4 stars, but instead only 2.5 stars for overall performance.
Love this place. Good food and good ambience, unfortunately they are not children family so most of the time I order for takeout.
Ok. I went back again. It was much much better. I'm pretty much back to my normal adoration of this restaurant.
The food: Fantastic as ever. (see my first review for extensive gushing)
The decor: Always lovely - as long as you don't sit behind the host stand.
The service: Pretty good! Not five star - but MUCH better than last time.
It takes a while to win be back over after a bad experience. But I've been back twice since... And trips were either very good or exceptional. So they're back in my good graces, and a smile is creeping back onto my face. Let's keep it that way!

Boo hoo! What happened?
The food is still just as fantastic, but what happened to the service? I am… Read more »
Ok they really deserve 3.5 stars, but hey, what can I say?...I'm generous.
Food was good, but kind of cold. I like hot food, well, Hot. I think if they serve in hot plates, that may actually solve most of the problems. I love the naan.
Ambiance was very pleasing to the eyes. I felt relaxed and comfortable.
Service was decent.
Parking is hit or miss depending on the day and what the nearby theater is playing that day.
By far, my favorite India restaurant is Tikka Masala on Judah--no fuss, cheap, nearby--great takeout.
But when I'm looking for something a little fancier for a dinner out, I head to Roti. The interior is chic with an exotic flair and the service is better than, say, Naan 'n Curry (that's right!).
I'm not really an Indian curry aficionado, but if the naan is warm and soft upon serving and the curry has that tumeric/masala spiciness, I'm a fan. Can't really complain about Roti's food!
I am indian food. After all, you are what you eat. So therefore, I'm indian food. I've been eating indian food since I was in diapers.I LOVE my food. I have scoured the bay area for good indian food. Some are casual and steady good, but leave you feeling a little sluggish after. When my family comes to town, I take them to ONE place, and one place only. And that place is Roti my friends. It's a great setting for eating very well done traditional food in a modern environment. The flavors are all on point, and best of all, the consistency is there.
Seriously, if an indian place gets 5 stars from an indian bloke, you know it's gotta be good. I've been a patron of Roti since 2006, and have never wavered. Now, I am Roti! And you should be too!
Chicken tikka Masala, seasoned and cooked to perfection.
Great personable service, good experience.
4 stars, yay for Indian food.
The food was pretty awful, definitely not as good as everyone said. The chicken in the tikka masala in my girlfriend dish was not cooked all the way, although the sauce was nice.
My girlfriend is Indian and has cooked a lot for me and taken me to some really authentic Indian restaurants near New York, NY. This one just didn't cut it for us. Although I know it probably was not the cooks fault, there was a hair in my mango lassi. In addition, the service was not quite up to par.
Let me preface this review with the fact I'm a wuss when it comes to spicy food. The slightest hint of jalapeno triggers five-alarm signals to my poor taste buds. Don't judge. Having said that, Roti disappoints in fusing flavor and spiciness that Indian food is known for. Me and my guest ordered the Chicken Jalfrezi and Aloo Gobi (cauliflower plate). Both were curries carnivorous and vegetarian friendly, respectively. While both plates were decently spiced, they seriously lacked palatably, and I wasn't eager to dive in for a second taste. It was like eating a PB&J sandwich without the jelly, but then again I don't like jelly, bad analogy. The only reason i kept eating was to have something to dip my naan in, which you really can't go wrong with, even if it's just plain naan.
All in all, the experience was pleasant: servers were attentive and polite, dim ambiance. May I add, it was a little noisy but maybe it was just that particular night due to 3 separate big parties taking place, one being a group of drunk 40-something cougars. However, the food fell a little short of prompting future visits.
My favorite place for Indian food in San Francisco. This place is so delicious. It's almost like upscale Indian food. I'd recommend a reservation. They can get crowded, especially if you don't go right when they open. Their goat cheese naan is mind blowing good. I hate to be whitey-mc whiterson boring, but their chicken tikka masala is amazing. I love how spicy the Roti mixed vegetables can get too. You truly can't go wrong with anything on their menu. I recommend venturing out and taking their recommendations. Great place to go for a date or if you just love Indian food. Great intimate setting and in cute West Portal, so you can go see a movie at the Empire afterward.
most restaurants on West Portal seem to be excellent. This one is no different.
I love how this restaurant is decorated. Unlike other indian restaurants. the style leans more towards sheik and sophisticated. The service is great and the food usually comes out in a timely fashion.
I would recommend getting the vegetable Samosas as an appetizer. They are great and something i don't seem to find at every indian restaurant. I also love the chicken tikka masala... but i always love that.
Go here for a good meal. Good ambiance. And enjoy a different part of the city than the norm.
What happened to my beloved Roti ?
Your once flawless flavors and spice combos have given way to sauces that taste like they were poured from a can or bottle.
Your meat portions in dishes were never great but they've shrunk faster than the economy . . . .3 or 4 pieces of meat per entree? And tough or chewy or stringy? NO NO NO ! What has happened?
Our last meal there was virtually unedible. And pricey. I'm terrified to try you again.
Being a fan of Naan And Curry you're going to tell me that I don't know good Indian. That may be true. I won't deny it how do I know what is authentic or good? I do however know what my tummy likes, and it loves this place.
It's like eating Naan and Curry in a very nice grown up atmosphere, without the # on the table, and waiting in line to order and pay. It's the same type of dishes, but made with probably real authentic seasonings from India, versus Naan and Curry's bulk purchased ones. (which I do love). Also the food is modernized and Americanized enough so that if you are a scaredy cat of new things, one could bring you here to try and ease you into Indian dining. The food is alot nicer and more elegant and authentic than say Naan and Curry, but that does not mean that either one of them doesn't make me happy just the same.
Oh and for lunch, they have a $10 or $11 special that is a steal!
YUMMMMMY.

-1 star for "organic" claims without the goods to back it up (ie: conventional factory farmed meats/cheese and overly fishy farm raised fish).
-1 star for burnt dry tortilla like naan.
-1 star for general inconsistency of food taste and quality.
-1 star for horrible acoustics and overcrowded atmosphere.
-1 star for exorbitantly high prices not justified by portion size/quality standards of the food.
-1 star for horribly rude owners with no concept of customer service.
alas... 1 star is the lowest score i can post. oh well. 1 star.
What a disappointment. I chose this based in part on the recommendation of a friend who I usually trust, but...
Two of us had two entrees (chicken tikka masala, mixed tandoori) the basic rice, garlic (and basil??) naan, and kingfishers beers. $80 with tax and tip
pleasant atmosphere, but very loud for an "expensive" restaurant. adequate service.
food -- meh. flavorless tikka masala ($16), usually one of my favorites, definition of bland here. at least i built up my empty calorie count..sigh. mixed tandoori ($22!) was 1 prawn, 1 small piece steak, 1 small piece chicken breast, 2 ground lamb, and 3 chunks of salmon. the lamb was yummy, very very flavorful. everything else...see, above, description of chicken tikka masala. the salmon was pretty well cooked, but if i didn't know i was in an indian restaurant, i would have had no idea based upon the flavor...nothing but a (too fishy) salmon flavor.
would have been 3 stars, but -1 for the price. esp in West Portal, for $40/per person, expect outstanding food and/or service, and nothing here was more than....meh
Fortunately, my company made up for the restaurant's shortcomings! :-)
Expensive, modern Indian cuisine.
Good for impressing a date.
Not good for eating out daily.
Their chicken saag is delightful. Naan is pricey but that's more or less expected of any Indian establishment.
Will eat from again, but I prefer to take-out.
I've been to Roti on multiple occasions and I've always had a great experience. Sure, Naan and Curry is cheaper and the quality of food is about the same (although still not quite as good), but you go to a restaurant like Roti when you want the atmosphere of a nice restaurant and you're not in the mood to serve yourself.
My boyfriend and I came in after a movie, and less than half the tables were filled, so we were able to sit down right away. Yippie. Our food came out no more than 5 minutes after we ordered, and it was just as good as always. I love their menu. Tons of choices, and I have yet to be disappointed.
What was with the service? First off, when we walk in, the hostess barely looks at us and asks (in an I don't give a damn kind of way): "Alright so where do you wanna sit?" No big deal. Then later on when someone else came in and asked if they were still open, she goes, "Um... Yeah." I seriously had to hold back my laughter. Not like it was an HOUR before closing time or anything. I think our server hated his life. No smile, didn't look up from his writing pad, didn't ask if we wanted anything to drink besides water, didn't ask if we wanted dessert before dropping off the check. No wait. I think he did smile. It was when a friend of his opened the front door and yelled his name across the entire restaurant. Now that's what I call professional. Roti, you're letting yourself be represented that way? I know you can do better... I've seen it.
Honestly, it takes a lot to actually bother me when it comes to service. I've done the whole serving thing, so I totally understand when mistakes are made or food takes forever blah blah blah. I didn't leave Roti feeling bothered or offended or anything, but I did feel really surprised to see such a blatantly unprofessional staff in such a good restaurant. It's little restaurants like Roti where you find servers who suggest you try new things, who can recommend a glass of wine that pairs perfectly with the lamb vindaloo, and who get excited when you ask what their favorite dish is. But hell... the guy didn't even want us to order a stupid dessert.
I'll go back. I'm close, and good food = good food. However, as far as providing the ultimate dining experience goes, Roti is slipping.
Hmmmm this place is sooo good. -1 star because prices aren't fantastic.
Ok, you must try the goat cheese naan. Try it because it's super tasty and also because I have yet to find another indian place that has it.
The service is very friendly and attentive. I ordered a mango lassi the last time I was here and it was very refreshing.
This is a review by a vegetarian Indian!
I dont know how the other food is, but all the vegetarian food we ordered was tasteless and oily. All we could taste was the raw chopped green chillies added last minute, since we asked for spicy food.
The only good thing was the goat cheese naan as an appetizer.
The paneer jalfrezi, part from being oily and the worst ever, actually had lettuce in it. Since when did people start "cooking" lettuce, and especially in Indian cuisine?! This is the first time Ive ever had lettuce in a vegetable gravy dish. I could make better paneer at home. The naans/rotis/parathas were huuuge and super oily.
I think the chefs may have changed recently, Ive eaten here ebfore, and at their Burlingame restaurant as well, and it was much better. The food was so bad, that we didn't even want to box it up!
Apart from this, great service and staff.
Roti is the type of place where you love the food, get friendly staff, and ogle the cute servers. And yet, I've never had a "this was a kickass place" reaction. And I've eaten here on more than one occasion. I will say, I love the wine selection! Big fan of the specials. Every time I go in, there's a special that peaks my interest and someone at our table chooses one. It's always delicious to the nth degree!
I came here for the first time on Valentine's Day this year. No, not with a date sadly. HA! I came with two of my friends and with my brother. We were all dateless so we figured "why not?"
The place was packed, as you can imagine. The food was delicious. I was with good company. What more could you want?! Oh wait, a date right? It WAS Valentine's day *barf*
I haven't been here in about 9 months and I just confirmed I won't be back for another 9 months if ever. Here lies the problem of ordering take out from this place. About 9 months ago I order some take out, very simple an order of the fish and a veggie dish, when they tell you 1 hour, it's actually 1 1/2 hours. As for today, I order food around 5:10 and got there about 5:45, they told me 30 minutes. I left after 6:30 with my order.
There were a few more people who waited unhappily for their take out.
I was offered a free dish for the wait. I thought about for all of half a second, I didn't want to be stuck there waiting for another 30 minutes for a free dish. Hell No. I opt to take my food and leave.
The naan I brought home wasn't fully cook and had a doughy taste. as was the aloo gobi (the cauliflower is completely crisp as if only just dumped into the curry and pulled out). I will never order the assorted appetizers ever again, that was horrible. The vegetable pakoras were a bit on the burnt side and wasn't even close to being authentic in any way . I'm seriously disappointed today with the food tonight. The tandoori murgh was very spicy (which I like but my daughter couldn't eat) was the only dish that was decent.
I've never had problems with the food when I eat there, but take out is a nightmare.

One of my favorite lunch spots.
11$ for Chicken Tikki Masala for Lunch (a lot more expensive for dinner).
Compared to Naan 'N Curry:
a. $3 more expensive
b. You get a pretty tasty salad
c. You probably get twice as many chunks of chicken in your curry.
d. The Chai Tea doesn't taste like crap.
Also make sure you try the Papadum for $2. Definitely worth the money to taste the different dips.
If you are looking for upscale Indian food here is your spot. The location is very good lots of parking and the neighborhood is great for walking. We did not have reservations and took about 20 minutes to get a table, then it took another 10 minutes to get recognized by our server. The menu is very big and not very cheap. Warning do not go there hungry as it took almost a half an hour to get our order the excuse the server gave us was"everything is made to order" what he meant to say was we have a really tiny kitchen and can only cook one order at a time. Overall the food is very good, the serve so so and the decor is nice. If I'm in the area I would stop back in but I would not make a special trip there again.
I love you goat cheese Naan. With your warm, gooey goat cheese middle, and your cold fresh goat cheese to spread on the outside. You make me happy. Almost as happy as the Lamb Korma, but when I combined the two of you, it was a match made for my tummy...and my tummy was happy.
Oh yes, the veggie samosas for the appetizer certainly hit the spot, along with the glass of riesling from their limited though Indian cuisine friendly wine list.
Indeed, the only reason all this happy food did not give the place five stars was the noise level. If I had to hear the lady across the room cackle one more time, I swear my goat cheese naan was gonna get up and do mean and unusual things to her purse. So a bit too loud to relax fully to enjoy this happy happy food...perchance next time I will order take out, and me and my beloved goat cheese naan can be reunited again and all will be happy again.
do you know what. I m not a big fan of indian food, sometimes they are little too spice for me, but this Mom and Papa Indian Bistro did it for me. I love the ambiance, the service and the best of all the food. The basil and garlic bread was marvelous, and the rice with chicken and spices made me a fan of this little local restaurant. Before I used to walk by and always was wondering why, why this place it is always packed, Thankfully my friend took me there and now I have my fever indian restaurant in the neighborhood. I ll be back and I strongly reccomend this place to anyone.
