I met the owner last year and just never made it to Rothmann's. I CANT BELIEVE I WAITED SO LONG!! The lobster melted in my mouth, the filet was so tender and the desserts were well worth the calories. The service made the experience even that much better! I have to say although I love Pat the owner I still wish he would one day advertise with us:):) OUT OF TOWNERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS RESTAUARANT!!!
The Best Steakhouse in the city. For years I have gone to the other usual suspects on the island, but this is the best. One of the best Bone-In Ribeyes I have ever eaten. So tender, so flavorful, just fantastic. Their Bernaise Sauce is just right, and they even have some outdoor smoking for us smokers. This is one of the best in New York. They definitely do not get enough credit.

Rothmann's is a mixed bag , though generally on the favorable side .
The Porterhouse is as good as there is , the filet gorgonzola is very tasty , and the sirloin is top notch . The steak's are great when they're cooked right , but the success ratio is only fair . It seems as if they can't figure out the difference between medium-rare and medium-well . If I wanted medium all the time , I'd be fine ----- but if you want medium-rare, they miss , and if you want medium-well , they miss ( certainly not a problem at Peter Luger's ) .
The room is very comfortable and relaxing , the setting is more gentleman's club than overly loud frat house , and the decor is quite nice .
The wine list is pretty extensive , with some great bargains to be found . Refreshingly , they highlight some vineyards that are mostly overlooked at other restaurants .
The service , sadly , is below par . The staff seems to be understaffed and/or undertrained , and the night can be frustrating if you have the wrong waiter .
After a moderate experience at Peter Luger's, I was on the search for the best steakhouse in Manhattan. I tried Rothmann's with my family and have absolutely no regrets. We ordered the porterhouse for 3, and though this was not as tasty as Peter Luger's, let's not forget that Lugers serve their steaks on hot plates with excessive amounts of oil to dip the steak in, and they ONLY serve porterhouse, which is quite outrageous for an establishment that labels itself a "steakhouse." I'm a big fan of other cuts and the bone-in rib eye at Rothmann's was truly one of the best I've ever had. Service here is actually pretty good too.
Overall, I think Rothmann's is very similar to Morton's in terms of quality, service, and pricing. It probably isn't the "best" in Manhattan but is definitely up there with the rest.

Bomb ass steakhouse. Kind of pricey but the portions are huge. We had rib-eye and lobster w/stuffed crab. Also ordered the mashed potatoes with garlic and butter. It was off the HOOOOK. The potatoes were delicious with lots of flavor and a nice texture. The steak was huge and done very nicely. Lobster was good as well. We ordered one of their deserts (forgot the name but it's the first choice on the menu). The desert was in-fuckin-credibly yummy. Three scoops of vanilla and chocolate ice cream, in between some kind of French biscuit, drizzled with warm chocolate syrup and powdered sugar. I'm going bust one just thinking about it. Live music too. Great place to eat if you want to spend a little extra.

lovely place to sit around outdoors and drink vino while inhaling some lovely steak and watching the east 54th street well heeled traffic go by. across the street is san pietro which has a snazzier power broker scene but this place is probably a bit lower key, though still has that east 50s wall street vibe.
when i was an intern at a certain fashion house (i've since moved to finance, which i like much better) i used to sneak out and have long lunches here while feigning doctors appointments. unfortunately the world of finance can only permit so many doctors appointments. nowadays i'll stop by here for some drinks with friends at the bar, typically get hit on by a 60 year old financier, and sneak off to a table with some of my girlfriends.
risk: getting picked up by a financier
reward: getting picked up by a financier

I think this is one of New York's hidden stars... Incredibly good ribeye, wonderful steak tomatoes, creamed spinach, calamari... I've been to Rothmann's about 10 times, and I've sampled a wide variety of their appetizers and entrees, and I've never once been disappointed.
I'd rank Rothmann's over Luger's, for steak, but especially for service. You can walk in to Rothmann's dressed up for a date or dressed down after a long day at work, and expect the same friendly professional service. Really an incredible spot.

Porterhouse for 2 (medium rare) is so, very, deliciously juicy. The slightly charred crust and the moist, tender inside just melts in our mouth. A generous "for two" plate. They make great martinis here (I love mine with Grey Goose and 3 olives). My favorite place for at-that-bar appetizers of steak on toast and JUMBO shrimp cocktail. Yes, a bit pricey, so it's a treat when I come here. If I am not trekking to Brooklyn for Peter Luger's (most of the time, I have to make an effort to get there, as well as remember to call way ahead for reservations), then this is just as drooling-ly good.
I had dinner here with my Dad when he was in town on business. It is convenient to my office and the University Club so it was the perfect spot for a bi-coastal rendezvous. Our round of well marked-up drinks were followed closely by our food. The last sip was rushed, but I wasn't complaining, maybe I should have drank faster! I ordered the pepper crusted filet which was perfectly cooked and surprisingly came with a few extra sides (spinach and a veggie casarole of sorts). Dad got the petit filet that appeared juicy and perfectly done as well. There is something mouth watering about the simple plating of a lonely, perfectly prepared steak staring at you from an otherwise empty plate. We also got a gigantic pile of onion rings (devilish) and steamed asparagus (crispy - just how I like them). An efficient meal, but excellent nonetheless.
've never eaten such a good steak (Porterhouse for 2, medium-rare), let alone seen such a comprehensive wine-list or experienced such good service. The prices are pretty high (came to $250 for 2 and we didn't have starters and shared a dessert, although we did have a bottle of Champagne to) but I didn't feel ripped-off in the slightest. I wanted a great meal and was prepared to pay for it, I wasn't disappointed. I'd highly recommend it to anyone visiting NYC and wanting to try a steakhouse.
