My parents used to bring me to Playland as a kid and I will forever cherish those memories. Now it was my turn to bring our daughter and my little nephew here.  I saw their smiles and at that moment life was perfect. Located in Roeding Park right next to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, this tropical oasis is a treasure for young and old alike.  Playland is a small amusement park that has 13 rides. There is something to keep everyone entertained especially the little ones and you can't beat the prices. From the small train ride around the park to the historic carousal and the paddle boats for a workout or a corn dog at the concession stand it's the perfect spot for a quick getaway.

Next to Playland is Storyland which is a walk-thru park with themes of Mother Goose Stories and Nursery Rhymes. This area has a separate fee but it's definitely entertaining for the little ones.

Yes both could use a remodel and they are not huge but this is Fresno's answer to Disneyland and I gotta say I love it and so do the kids. Let's hope this stays around forever.

* 50¢ a ticket for the rides

I LOVE this place.  I like the fact that it looks a bit run down, it creates a nice effect.  Any kid would adore this place, and when I say kid I mean bout 8 and under.  The older ones might be a little bored with the 3 little pigs, and little red riding hood stories.

Be sure and buy a key~it's worth it!

When I was a wee youngster, one of my fondest memories of spending time with Oma and Opa (Grandparents) were the frequent trips to Storyland. To a 5 year old, the structures of old-school nursery rhymes and fairy tales brought to life loomed massive before my eyes. I treasured the Magic Key that unlocked an unseen voice reading particular excerpts from the myths of my youth. It gave me power. I had my 6th birthday in King Arthur's castle here and everything, from the heavy, oversized throne, to the Round Table where my fellow Kindergarten revelers giddily ate birthday cupcakes, to the dungeon-esque (both in style and smell) bathrooms, everything screamed fantasy. I even got to wear a "birthday crown" that, until we realized how nasty it is to use the same hat for everyone year-in and year-out, my family used for birthdays up until a few years ago. We still have it though.

Storyland also boasted a fantastic live theater for children, mostly staffed by occasionally wasted High School and College Drama Kings/Queens/Squires, but dammit if it wasn't a lot of fun to watch. When I was 5.

Storyland is, in reality, incredibly small in actual acreage. The last time I went back there, I easily made my way through the park in 15 minutes. But if you have children or are stuck babysitting your niece for the weekend, a trip to Storyland and it's magic, albeit retro, imagining of classics like the "Three Little Pigs" and "Little Boy Blue", might just earn you a sweet spot in that child's heart. forever.
