10 reviews for Ross Cutlery & Sharpening Service
What a freaking cool and fantastic store! Ross is a throwback to the old days when stores specialized. So instead of going to Macys or Bed Bath etc. where they have a little bit of everything, and minimum wage sales clerks who know a whole lot of nothing, back in the day, you went to a knife store for knives. If it cuts, slices, dices, stabs, guts, shaves etc., they'll have it at Ross. They'll have it at a good price, and they'll know why it's designed they way it, precisely what it's for, and how to take care of it.
I cleaned out an entire drawer of knives and scissors, including weird-ass stuff I inherited, took them all to Ross and went through each one with a guy who's clearly been working there forever. He told me what was worth keeping and sharpening and what was junk. He never tried to sell me anything new, though once I did the math on a few items, I decided that buying something new and higher quality made more sense than sharpening some older used items. On top of all that, it's in the Bradbury building which you have to check out b/c it's so gorgeous.
Yes parking is a drag, but if you bring quarters you should be able to find a meter a block or two away. And if you drop your knives to be sharpened, pay in advance and then when you want to pick them up, you can call from your car and a staff member will meet you outside as you drive by and hand you your knives through the window so you don't have to park again.
Finally, if you're looking for a unique shaving oriented gift for a guy, I bet you could find something cool here.
Support great old stores! Go to Ross!
I'm always looking for high-performing, well-priced kitchen knives, but what drew me inside the store was the display of manicure sets made in Solingen, Germany. Then I saw the safety razors, and I couldn't not walk out with something. Which led to a 6-in Henckel's knife ... sigh. For your consideration this Thanksgiving, a beautifully refurbished vintage Henckel's carving set with stag handles ....
I can see that regular visits to the Sprint repair store (yeah, in an iPhone world, I'm stuck with a Palm) are going to turn into a costly habit as I wander over to Ross.
Ross Rocks!

This is the only place I trust to get my knives sharpened. Reasonable prices, quick turn-around, super nice staff. The location can be a pain, but besides that it's awesome. Great selection of knives if looking to purchase.
I went to culinary school, and while my $1000 knife set came with nice fancy knives, they were really to fancy for everyday use. As one of my chef said, they were too heavy and were better off on a counter for display. So I headed to Ross Cutlery, and I found myself a nice lightweight santoku knife for $30. They had a huge selection, but I found the one I was looking for. They even sharpened it for me. It was sharp enough to easily slice through the newspaper he had on the counter. The man helping me out also gave me some job leads. If I had known this was in the Bradley building, I would have checked out the lobby. Bladerunner was filmed in there.
I came here looking for some kind of "old fashioned razor" as a birthday gift for my boyfriend, the kind of razor "they don't make any more," that is "double-edged" with "replaceable razor blades," and allegedly gives you "the closest shave ever," or so I was told. Mmmmkay... So I start typing random words into the Yelp search function and up pops Ross Cutlery & Sharpening Service, located on the ground floor of the Bradbury building and doing business in the same spot for the past 90 years. Promising.
Long story short, I walked out with an original 1940's Gillette stainless steel razor with adjustable blade tension (1-10) in P-R-I-S-T-I-N-E condition, and returned the next day to pick up my kitchen knives which are now of hair-splitting quality.
This store is so cool. That or I'm developing a fetish for sharp objects. Or both.
They have wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor, anything and everything related to cutting things; from kitchen knives to pocket knives, scissors and clippers for hair, straight razors for shaving, sharpening services, and a host of other odds and ends. Not to mention the store's attached to one of the coolest buildings in LA, and as a family run business the service is impeccable. Richard spent a good twenty minutes speaking to me in detail about various items and gave me his undivided attention---in fact, he was so attentive that I never even realized there were two people waiting behind me until we were finished.
They don't make them like this anymore!
I got my first straight razor sharpened here and I've never been happier to find a place where I can go to not only drool over new straight razors and buy replacement blades for my safety razor, but I can have a great conversation with the store owner.
Sometimes I go downtown just to go to Ross's...
They didn't have Carbon or High Carbon Knives. I also found their cooking knife selection to be rather limited. Parking was difficult.
At least the service was good and they do a good job sharpening.
Perhaps it was were a hairstylist or something I would had enjoyed this store a little more. BUt i don;t know... I got my chef's knife there. Im somewhat happy with it.
I like this place. they have novelty shaving items. Maybe something your dad your boy friend might like if they are into old stuff. they have a vast selection of knives and the owner is very helpful. I went with my sister and he spent over an hour with us. i would put this place top on my list for cutlery. BTW - there easy access to red line Pershing square station
Ross' has a number of blade-related sections and items: hunting and sport knives, shaving, cooking and even some swords.
I parked a few blocks away on a side street, which on Saturdays and Sundays is free...on a weekday it would get you towed.
They do have a very extensive selection of German knives: 2 or so whole cases.
The Japanese selection was less extensive: Shun, Global (both available at Sur La Table) and a third company no one could name because it wasn't written in English on the package.
But no one in LA seems to carry a wide selection of Japanese knives.
So I picked a Shun Santoku 7" and was relieved when I got home that it was about the same price on at Amazon. It's always great when you can buy local and get Internet pricing.
Jenny was the sales girl who helped me. She mentinoed her dad and uncle work there, so perhaps one is Ross. She definitely knew her knives.
If you're looking for a cooking knife, especially a German knife, it's definitely worth a visit. The staff is knowledgable. Overall they have a wide selection (larger than Sur La Table), even if the Japanese choices are limited. And based on my knife and http://Amazon.com, the prices are very competitive.
