4 reviews for Rosey Baby
Rosey's is a great neighborhood dive bar/ restaurant. The food is always great and the service is friendly and laid back. They have live bands on the weekend and can draw a pretty decent crowd.
They always all you can eat catfish and it truly is delicious. But I have to say that there are certain things on the menu that are spectacular: The escargot in mushroom caps, fried okra, crawfish etoufee and wings. I also give honorable mentions to the crawfish bisque and red beans and rice.
The beer selection is top notch and they make a mighty hurricane.
My only gripe is that we were given a hard time by the manager once for bringing in a small bag of cheez-its for our son. I mean, really.... It's a tiny bag of crackers compared to our $75 meal.....get over it!
Eh.
We happened on this place - and thought we'd give it a try since there aren't many places for cajun food in SoFlo.
We started with hushpuppies as an appetizer. We were told they were homemade. I have to question that since they all seemed to be uniform, perfect balls. While perfect in shape, they were not perfect in taste. I think they were mainly flour and not cornmeal. They also had an odd texture...as if they had been rolled out from dough rather than dropped batter.
I had the muffaletta. While it was tasty, it was kind of sad...a couple of thin slices of meat and a thin slice of cheese...I really felt cheated...especially at $9.95 for half a sandwich. It came with a side of cajun potatoes. I think they forgot the seanoning...they tasted like fried, old-boiled potatoes.
My partner had the etouffe. It was bland, and he had to search for the crawfish. He didn't bother finishing the dish.
Eh. Pass the place by.
I drove all the way out here because it was crawfish season and I had a craving for Louisiana crawfish (boiled, not fried tails). Rosey Baby used to cater the crawfish festival that is no longer here, and they catered a crawfish music fest at Tobacco Road sometime in the last year.
It's half bar, half restaurant, with lots of seafood on the menu. It's reasonably priced but the crawfish was like $19 a pound. Uh what? Although I understand that $3.99/lb is only a Houston thing because of the proximity, $7.99 is the most I'd ever paid for crawfish. Because 1 lb of crawfish is far from a meal...you need at least a couple pounds or so, and that's if you're just snacking.
Also odd was that you had to pay extra for the Cajun seasoning, and they didn't boil potatoes or corn or anything with it. They use a mild crawfish boil alone. Must be the "locals"' low tolerance for any kind of heat whatsoever.
However, it's the only place around with fresh crawfish, and when I looked around I noticed Louisiana ex-pats were in attendance. Everyone outside of Texas and Louisiana seems to overcook them, and this place kinda did too. Some were overcooked slightly and some were perfect. But beggars (aka crawfish addicts) can't be choosers down here.
They have live music on some nights too.
Coming back home to Florida, one of the places I really wanted to visit to get my Cajun crave on was Rosey Baby's. The last time I was there for some good Craw fish Etoufee was 1997 and it was spicy, like REALLY spicy. I loved every bite. So when I came back recently for the same, I was really disappointed by how the heat was turned down. I guess someone must have complained about it. I had the fried Oysters and it was wonderful. Rosey baby may need to go back to basics but still worth a stop by
