this hotel impresses. from the valet section in front -- SOBE like
to the majestic rolling hills out back, to the crowd inside the swank bar/library lounge, this place exudes affluence. nice artistic touches abound like the lightning of the trees displaying a pattern on the hallway floor
had a dinner meeting (one of many taking place) with amazing sounding food, but meal was just ok
the atmosphere makes this place memorable, up there with hotels like Montage.

Why didn't this oasis exist when I lived in Palo Alto for four glorious years?!?
It was love at first sight when I stopped here in July with Katrina L. for drinks and a bite with some girls and was wowed by everything from the modern decor and stunning views to the swanky lounge and lobby.
Three months later, I've had the pleasure of staying at the Rosewood twice: once in August for a wedding and just this past weekend for Stanford Homecoming. This hotel has it all: spacious rooms (two queens bed to a room? don't mind if we do), extremely accomodating service, a jaw-dropping pool setup I've yet to take advantage of extensive room service menu with delivery to satisfy your midnight snack cravings I've had more than my fair share of.
I wish they all could be Rosewood hotels. Good thing my group of girls has already requested rooms for Homecoming 2010 and I've got a wedding shower there next summer!

I want to move into one of the rooms here. Beautifully decorated with great amenities, I would recommend staying here to anyone wanting to stay in the Menlo Park area in a resort-like environment. I have eaten at Madera, had drinks at the bar, lounged by the pool, spa-ed at the spa, and slept in the rooms and I have been pretty impressed with all of them.
My only complaint here is the parking and length of time that it can take to get around the facilities. It is quite large and the running around can be quite inconvenient.

i've been curious about this place for the past year during their long construction, since i always pass by it during my commutes on and off the 280.
self parking is a little confusing at night as all the areas look identical and are twisted.
i had a chance to come to a private function and i have to say the hotel is lovely and elegant but not stuffy. it was quite busy on a thursday evening, especially the bar area. we had dinner in a private room on a lower level
food sounded great and supposedly by the same chef as the restaurant upstairs but was ok - like a generic catered meal
i haven't stayed here but probably most convenient for those coming for stanford related events or VC clients on sandhill road, etc
Came here with the girls for drinks at the Madera bar and had a lovely time.
The lobby of the restaurant had an original Rex Ray. It's the first time I've seen one up close and LOVED the colors and textures of the artwork.
The bar area was packed with the folks from Sand Hill Road - VCs, I Bankers and a few cougars....
We decided to go outside in the lounge area for more breathing room and the admire the view of the mountains and pool. We ordered drinks and food - we got sliders, lamb sausages, flatbread with cherry tomatoes, salt cod brandade and arugala and tempura greenbeans. Our server Maile was gracious and very apologetic when said greenbeans got waylaid at another table. The food was actually not bad considering we were starving.
It was starting to get chilly and the servers were kind enough to ask us if we needed blankets and brought out fleece blankets and turned on the patio heater next to our table. After a while it was just too cold (this is supposed to be summer, what is up with the cold weather?!) we moved indoors to the library. Library had comfortable overstuffed couches and lots of room for bigger parties.
Overall I liked the Madera bar, ambiance was relaxing and not a total meat market like in some bars in the city. The service was attentive yet not intrusive. I would definitely come here again, hopefully on a warmer night so I could focus on the view and not freeze to death.

I went there for an event last night. From the outside the hotel is nondescript but when… Read more »
Nothing like this exists anywhere else on the Peninsula or in San Francisco for that matter. Service, food, decor, vibe, views, pool...it's all perfect. The "human signage" is my favorite.
Eat lunch on the terrace overlooking the Santa Cruz mountains with good company and you'll be beyond satisfied.
Came here for a "meet and greet" type of event with some friends the other night. Honestly, I never knew there was a swanky type of hotel in the MP area. You can't even tell it's a hotel off of Sand Hill Road. And the parking...confusing. Of course there's valet, but why valet when there are spots open? The only thing is that the parking lot is not one big lot. It's several "pods" sprawled out which makes it hard to find where you parked and where the hotel entrance is.
After parking, I entered the hotel which was very nice inside. There were lots of staff just standing around by the entrances of doorways, greeting you. I found Madera Bar which looked nice, but couldn't find the event I was headed to so I asked a hostess in the restaurant and instead of giving me directions, she actually walked me to the Portico area (downstairs and outside).
Once outside, I think you get a chance to greatly appreciate where you are. You have views of the hills and the pool below is lovely. The outside terrace was set up with couches and tables to stand at. There were 3 mobile bars stationed at different spots and the bartenders were nice (but the drinks were high: wine $11 and cocktails $16). There was another outdoor patio upstairs, which I found to be the outside of the Madera Bar.
I didn't get a chance to fully observe the decor inside, but what I did see was nice. If I were to throw a small event, I'd look into the Rosewood for it's chic interior and friendly service.

I love the bathroom. Yes, you read it correctly - the bathroom! It was all about the bathroom for me and I'm in love with it!
The lobby is very open and welcoming. The staff is very friendly. Upon check in, a staff member will take you to your cottage. Depending on where your cottage is, it can be a maze so having someone lead the way is very helpful. Once we entered the room, I was asked if the temperature of the room is acceptable. After that, a quick guide on the amenities such as the multi-function television where you can watch tv, videos, syrius radio stations, setting up wake up calls, managing the lights...the Nespresso machine for that important cup of coffee in the morning, the mini bar... Ice is delivered upon request.
The room is quite big, over 500 sq. ft. with a king sized bed, a desk with 2 chairs, a chaise lounge, a large flat screen tv. You can open up the sliding glass doors to the patio with 2 comfortable lounge seats soaking up the sun and the serenity of the place. There's a huge walk-in closet with a large heavy mirror against the wall with racks and drawers on either side for your belongings along w/ other standard amenities such as luggage rack, safe, full sized ironing board, iron, and flashlight. Now the bathroom...with pocket doors, a large deep soaking tub, a large shower with glass walls that can easily fit 2 with a rain shower head and a separate detachable shower head, the toilet is separated with frosted glass wall and door...with motion sensor lights. The bath products are Ohne bamboo and lemongrass scented, a new line by Lady Primrose, which I absolutely love (Tryst is my favorite scent).
I can't wait to make a return visit...

I was supposed to meet an old friend for drinks in the Stanford area, so I suggested the Rosewood Sand Hill.
The property is situated at the crest of Sand Hill Road and looks rather corporate from the outside. I used to work in one of the building complexes across the road, and the hotel pretty much matches that look: low-key, greyish-brown wooden buildings that blend into the background. But the interior was a different story, with an eclectic mix of swanky yet clean-lined furniture and contemporary artwork.
The reception area is spacious and welcoming, as were the rest of the public areas. We wandered down the hallway, which then opened up into the library/lounge, and out onto the terrace to enjoy the late afternoon sunshine. Along the way, we were greeted by several staff members.
The terrace overlooks the pool and the rest of the property--and, in the not-so-far distance, 280. If it weren't for the noise of the freeway, I could easily have imagined myself somewhere in the countryside. Regardless, it was a wonderful place to relax with a drink and enjoy each other's company. It was a bit breezy today, so the outdoor fireplace was a nice touch. But on a hotter day, it will be gorgeous.
D. and I chose to try the "mocktail," which was an alcohol-free concoction of pomegranate juice, citrus juices, mint, and soda--and it was delicious and refreshing. The complimentary snacks served--warmed marinated olives, mixed nuts, and popcorn and rice crackers--were nice. As the temperature dropped, we moved inside to the quietly plush library to sit in front of the two-sided fireplace that also opens onto the bar area of Madera, the hotel restaurant. Here, we tried one of the flatbreads on the menu, with smoked salmon, creme fraiche, potatoes, caviar, and a curry sauce. The flatbread was almost cracker-like, but delicious, with a generous serving of smoked salmon. The curry sauce and caviar were superfluous. It was better without either of them.
I'll definitely want to come back here once the weather warms up to try some of the other drinks and lounge menu items. Madera and the restaurant's bar area were pretty crowded. I'd like to come back to try out those as well.

MADERA BAR REVIEW ONLY - NOT FOR HOTEL
I enjoyed the bar very much. It was beautiful hardwoods throughout with a gorgeous view of the mountains and sunset. I'd imagine on warm days, which there are many rumored in Palo Alto, it would be an encredible place to visit.
That being said, the hotel itself is hard to find. I looks more like condos in hiding than a grande hotel (I think this is the point). Signage is all but nonexistent and if you are not lucky enough to see someone to ask, I could see walking and driving around aimlessly for hours at a time.
I DO NOT like the layout, the look of the exterior and the all-too-cool "California Beige" of the entire place. If I see one more earth toned building, I'm going to hurl.
The service was quite good considering the huge size of our happy hour group. It was a bit pricey for a bar only place, and the food/appies looked great. I got 2 glasses of wine with tip for $40.

THIS REVIEW IS ONLY FOR FOOD EATEN IN THE LOUNGE AREA.
I was excited to visit this place for the first time with some girlfriends after a crazy Friday at work. The place is beautiful with nice decor and when you sit inside and look out, you feel like you're away in the hills somewhere.
The lounge area (inside and outside) was pretty full. We ordered the sliders and lamb flat bread. After what seemed like a long time (maybe because we were hungry) the server comes with the vegetarian flat bread and some meat plate - both of which we did not order. The server puts in the correct order and we waited again. Another 30 minutes later we are informed that all of the flat bread is out. So we ordered fries, the chicken with swiss chard and polenta. The slider was okay - the bun was burnt. The fries portion was tiny. The chicken was okay, but the chard was salty.
My friend enjoyed her drink. I had tea since I was driving, and I think that was the best thing I ate or drank all night.
I would come again for a drink some other time, but the lounge menu was not impressive and not worth the cost. Slow service.
I've watched this huge construction project for many months, and so as soon as it opened we had to check it out. We only had a couple drinks in the bar - so I can't say anything about the hotel, spa, restaurant, or any of the other facilities - but I suspect the whole resort will be a big success with the Sand Hill Road high-rollers.
The interior of the bar/lounge/restaurant is beautiful, and very comfortable feeling. The lighting is soothing, and the lounge is set up as a sort of indoor/outdoor room which will be especially nice on summer evenings. We sat by the fireplace outside, relaxed with our drinks, and the service was top-notch (attentive without being intrusive). My only real complaint is that the wine list is not outstanding, and a place like this should really have an extraordinary wine list. Some of the wine choices are simply overpriced ($26/glass), and the ones priced in the more modest sort of range ($12/glass) just aren't particularly good choices. We have pretty high standards for wine lists around here, and theirs isn't yet up to par.
But overall, considering they've only been open for a week, we had a nice experience, we enjoyed a relaxing evening by the fire, and will look forward to returning again to try the food sometime soon.

I really enjoyed my experience here last night for drinks and appetizers. The french fries with garlic aioli, and the Salumi dishes were great! The views of the Santa Cruz mountains are to die for, and you can enjoy them while sipping a cocktail near the outdoor or indoor fireplaces and lounge areas.
The service is prime and all of the members of the staff were very welcoming and on top of things. I can't wait to go back for dinner.
Patio/Bar Review
Nice place. Some interesting cocktails though I wish they would go a little further and do more things with bitters and crazy concoctions like places in SF. Not looking for "never seen before" drinks, but quality sweet sour combos that are timeless. They did have a couple great beers on tap, so kudos for that.
Some good things on the bar menu including some flat breads that looked amazing, but instead I got oysters, which were a weee bit expensive at 3 bucks a pop.
Nice atmosphere though the trees on the grounds have yet to grow in and the hotel seems in its infancy. The atmosphere inside the lounge is quite nice, with a wall of giant slices of old redwood. When my friend saw these he cynically said, "Oh thats sustainable."
I laughed and laughed, then cried a little.
Overall, good time. I've been waiting for a nice hotel to move in so I can get drinks with friends by a pool in the middle of the day. Thank you rosewood for making my rich white boy dreams come true.
A beautiful property with an amazing outdoor experience is truly worth taking a trip to...especially when the weather is so warm. When you are there you feel like you have left the city life and entered into a whole new world!!! The people there are all very friendly and service was great. Our dining experience at Madera was very enjoyable as well!! The foie gras is definitely a must try. Their ingredients are all very fresh and wonderfully paired.
Can't wait to go and visit the property again.
what's up with *a* website?
Pretty average when price is put into play.
Staff and service from a bar/dining perspective have a very long way to go.
Our server did not know the menu.
Guanciale . . . *uhm*
Asparagus . . . yes . . . asparagus . . . no?
It's easy to make a bed for someone . . .

I have only dined at Madera, the "resort" restaurant. Very nice oak fired wood grill.

The past month has not been kind to me to say the least. I endured a bout with shingles (not fun), a car crash, a sick dog, and most disconcerting, my beloved Yankees are sucking ass. Taking all of this into account, I decided to provide myself with a little impromptu loving. The recently opened Rosewood Sand Hill Hotel and Spa has been on my radar for awhile as I have watched it being built from the ground up. Instead of heading to Carmel or Mendocino, I took the five minute trek to Rosewood on Friday.
Let me say, I am glad that I did. Before deciding to spend the night, I stopped by the property to browse a little. I was welcomed by a professional and friendly fresh faced staff. They were more than happy to tour me on the property, personally taking me to a variety of rooms and views, to the spa, and to the restaurant. After such personalized service, how could I say no? I chose a great room with a view of the fabulous pool and the Santa Cruz Mountains. The rooms are just my style, very modern, clean, functional, with all the bells and whistles. Great bed, Phillips surround sound with Sirius satellite music selections SPA073 or CHILL038 score Batpoints, 46"Plasm screen ...all lighting on dimmers for mood enhancement, great balcony with comfortable seating, and a mack daddy of a bathroom, major points for a huge shower with rain head fitting. I could stay in there all day, in fact, I believe that I removed the top three dermal layers by luxorating (is that a word?) under that downpour for so long.
Let me just say the room was so comfortable and comforting, you would never want to leave......Welcome basket with bottle of wine, dark chocolates, fresh fruit....holy sheepshit Robin!
The environment was perfect. A gorgeous warm evening with a light breeze. Sun setting over the mountains. Outdoor dining, outdoor fireplace, great music..efficient and smiling staff and a very friendly crowd (me likey).
Rosewood....you are a perfect local getaway without the carbon footprint guilt of driving to Carmel....Muchos gracias!

Came here for lunch a couple weeks ago...I have mixed feelings about this place. My friend and I got there, and didn't have reservations (it was a Wed. afternoon) and we had to wait what seemed like a long time for a hostess to appear. She then told us that they had no room in the restaurant for us to eat, and that we could eat outside in their lounge area. As I stared at the almost empty restaurant we agreed. To her credit the place did get pretty busy. The food was pretty good. I had this trout sandwich thing which was super! The service was sometimes right on, and at other times we had to wait or find someone to help us. To their credit, this place is still new, so they are maybe still working on a system, so I will re-review this place at another time. It's worth a try....

Went for drinks with a group of about 50-60 people. Pretty deck with a view, and the bar and lounge are nice (but a bit small). Decent list of wines by the glass. Even though we called ahead, the bottle of Viognier we ordered was warm (to their credit, they offered a choice of 3). They quickly put it in ice, but after 25 minutes of waiting (and waiting) for it to chill, we sent it back and ordered a red. The waitperson outside was very attentive and apologetic about the wine problem. I would say that they were overwhelmed by our group, but in fact the organizer called ahead, and they were still unprepared. Even with a large group, there were no offers of discounts or food spiffs--simple things to do for a guaranteed large party. I attribute that to bad management/arrogance/newbie fever. Hopefully, they'll work out the kinks.
Such a beautiful location but food (flat bread appetizer, etc) was TERRIBLE. Also, although our server was friendly, it seems like Rosewood just doesn't really care or get that people expect a certain level of service and that the food be excellent. I commented on the flat bread and was told that that is how it is - hard and dry and the proscuitto and cheese topping on the flat bread was gross - it was slimy and "melted" - a very unpleasant texture. I think they should have offered to give us something else.
Madera restaurant at Rosewood starts with a fabulous facility and promise, but cannot yet deliver on that. Six of us experienced incredibly slow and inept service, poorly prepared bar drinks, and truly mediocre food. The menu is very limited with some quite strange choices. At this high price point, Madera must do much better. Bentley's, Bistro Elan, and Marche, for example, blow this place away. Spend you money someplace else. This place is all show and no go. Amateurs playing in a Pro League here.
