16 reviews for Rose's Landing Restaurant
My review is based solely on the to go side of the business. I picked up a fish burrito Sunday on my way home to SF. My thought was great fish burrito, yum healthy. I will admit it hit the spot, yet not quite what I had in mind.
White fish was the fish of choice. I was envisioning long fillets, this was more fish hunks. Wrapped in a tomato tortilla. Not what I was expecting, yet still good. Blk beans, rice and cheese.
All for $4.30. This price I can support, go local business!! They also BBQ oysters out the BBQ outside. Fish and chips looked killer!!! If we came back, i would for sure get the fish and chips!!!
Stopped by on a Monday afternoon on trip back to Bay Area from Pismo Beach for the weekend, I guess they weren't expecting much of a crowd, although quite of a touristy spot. The 3 servers were overwhelmed. Getting seated isn't a problem, getting service and then getting your food was. It took quite a while, and we hardly ordered (fish tacos and bowl of soup). I felt bad for the other parties that ordered after us (one was complaining about her sticky table). I expected a lot more, great view on the pier where you can see the "rock" but food was bad.
Maybe I'm spoiled by the yummy fish tacos at Rio Adobe in Cupertino, cause the ones at Rose's were bland and tasteless, I think they used a blend of tarter sauce on my mahi mahi and threw some cabbage on there. Wifey's clam chowder soup had a slight burnt taste to it. Server was nice enough to take it off the check after he called it "quality soup", but let's just say we will try a different place next time.
Other than that, Morro Bay was great tho'!
We ordered fish and chips, a burger, and clams. My friends thought everything was alright, but nothing to rave about. I had the clams steamed in a hogwash type of sauce, about $14, which was on the oily side and didn't have enough clams. The fish and chips, about $7, were too oily and the batter was tasteless. Service wise, the waiter forgot about us and forgot our order of garlic fries. (BTW there were TVs everywhere and it was very annoying.) We got back into the car and plunged into our snacks to satisfy our tummies.
All I can say is I came in here after making a fairly large TO GO ORDER!!!!! AND THEY added in my tip to the bill. I did not notice this at first payed and went home and then wondered why our bill was $30 more than what we ordered.
The manager apologized and gave us coupons, credits, and what not but this is just ridiculous.
Great place for seafood. I went here quite some times for their all you can eat specials and again for a nice fancy dinner on my graduation weekend.
I think the best deal they have or had would be the All You Can Eat Crab Tuesdays. Just buckets and buckets of dungenous crab comin out is great. One caution though, easy on their clam chowder. While you're waiting for your crab, they tend to give it a lil extra time to get you worked and full off the bread and chowder before serving the crab whick will ultimately be the thing you'l be eating for at least an hour. But definitely, the crab is great, simply steamed and dipped in butter. Great with a nice cold beer on a summer day close to sunset.
Second best All you can eat would be the Clams and Oysters. I think this is a Monday special where they give you clams steamed in some nice broth that goes good with the bread, deep fried breaded clams, raw oysters, and baked creamy oysters which are just amazing, but by far the most filling selection. Oysters are very fresh and the clams are good too.
And third, on their specials for the week would be the All You Can eat Shrimp (Yes, i like all you can eat seafood, anywhere. You should read my all you can eat sushi buffet in Davis, CA) This place gives you coconut breaded fried shrimp, shrimp in some broth, and cocktail shrimp. I'd have to admit, this may not be the best all you can eat deal, but i guess it'd be a different story if you like shrimp. However, the shrimp they give isn't the large ones you tend to get in a Vegas or Reno Buffet, they are the medium size one which let you eat 2 for each bite.
And for my dinner, I've had the scallops wrapped in bacon. Think about hot dog wrapped in bacon. That already sounds good, but SCALLOP? omY! food heaven!. and these are not your dinky scallops, they are the giant like 2 inch diameter ones that are just rightly cooked with a sizzling bacon wrapped around it. But hey, its simple, its good, and if only i was not hungover from pregraduation night in SLO would i have enjoyed this fully. The plate came with like 7 or 8 of them and i ended up giving half of them to my family. DAMN alcohol!
And finally, i think the most under appreciated place in SLO would be Morro Bay. Sure the big stinking rock is not that great of a place to look at, but the bay side with all the shops and tiny malls are a great find and these restaurants get some of the freshest seafood around. Check my other review for Giovanni's which is like down the block from Rose's Landing.
We went looking for a great fish and chips place, but when our first choice closed early, we went looking elsewhere and ran into Rose's. We ordered some crab cakes, and two orders of their fish and chips.....
The crab cakes were very good, and at a decent price, 10, but our fish...now that was some damn good breaded fish! I normally never eat my fish breaded, but WOW!! So clean, crisp, and greasy, you have to wash it all down with a cold brewsky!! Loved this place!!!
Didn't eat here (and glad I didn't given the sight of the complimentary cheese bread that appeared to be discards from Domino's. As my boyfriend commented: I didn't know restaurants with $25 entrees served such bread) but was lured in by the "happy hour" sign out front. Boy was that a false pretense if ever I've heard of one. So the happy hour consists of a marginal fraction off the domestic drafts that includes classy choices like Bud and Miller Lite (no offense, but that kind of happy hour choice makes for an unhappy hour as far as I'm concerned). Everything else, including all mixed drinks and cocktails are full price. BOOOO.
That said, the view is pretty gorgeous and the servers didn't seem to mind that we were just having drinks despite it being prime dinner hour.
I like Morro Bay, just didn't like the choices of restaurants within that area. I don't know what it was, but the variety and choices left me feeling limited. After walking up and down the pier, we settled with Roses' because it seemed reasonable in price and the menu seemed great. My husband ordered fish and chips (cuz you gotta have that if you are near any pier!) and I ordered fish tacos. I liked my fish tacos alot, my husband felt the fish and chips were way over rated. He ordered the three fish and chips platter and was done after one and mentioned it was too greasy and the batter was too thick. Roses should of considered to use Panko batter to have a lighter taste like the Elephant Bar does. We had to order a creme brulee for dessert to "wash" the grease down which btw was AWESOME!
At the inn we were staying, the host there recommended the Outrigger's as a better choice for Fish and Chips. But all in all, if you get other stuff besides the fish and chips, I think this place would have had more stars. Oh yeah, and they seemed a little under staffed there so be patient.
If you do like fish and chips with thick batter, then I believe they have all you can eat fish and chips on friday for $5.99.
clams, bloody marys, chowder, fish and chips... this is what coastal towns are made of! My husband has been vacationing in Morro Bay for over 34 years. We take our kids here, our friends and our families because it's just what we crave. Most definitely priced right, relaxed atmosphere and good food. No, Emeril's not in the kitchen, but the food is good, damn good. Sorry to hear about the service some received, we always get treated well.... maybe a bad day for the server???? Isn't grease a food group yet???
A good find to have a light dinner/lunch right on the water with the Morro Rock in the background. Check it out at sundown for a romantic evening. The food is good, but the killer garlic fries are OK Definitely not the best you can find. The location more than makes up for the average food. If you are in Morro Bay and want some casual dining with a killer view, than this is the place. I'll be back.
On the plus side, it is in a great location right on the water. On the negative side, the food was really really bad. I got a seafood quesadilla and it was barely edible. The fries were okay I guess. I would definitely not return.
Decent battered fish, but very good garlic fries! Beware of the grease, and the size of the fish was not that big. Each fish could have been easily consumed in 2 bites.
We hung out here during happy hour on a Friday afternoon and had a pretty decent time. They've got some pretty good drinks there and friendly bartenders. I was disappointed that they do not have any draught beers. They have a selection of bottles, but if I'm going out to drink I want something that I couldn't go out to get at the supermarket.
Despite this, their appetizer food is good (we didn't try any of the entrees, but they did look good). Their bloody mary oyester half shells are pretty killer with really fresh oyeters combined with a tangy sauce. What is REALLY killer though are their fries. They're perfectly fried, so that the outside is crispy with just a hint of fluffy in the middle. They don't call their fries Killer by name for no reason. Their garlic/ oil topping mighit as well come with a complementary quadruple bypass surgery- tasty as hell, but left a pool of garlicky oil at the bottom of the fry basket. I was actually surprised that it all didn't seep out the bottom of the basket.
This definitely isn't the place to settle if you're looking to drink all night, but definitely a good stop if you're doing a Morro Bay pub crawl. But in all fairness, this is a family restaurant, and hopefully I can give more stars after I try their dinner.
We stopped here for lunch on a weekend getaway at Morro Bay. Like other restaurants right on the pier, this place offered seating with view of the bay. We had crab cakes and a bowl of chowder, and both were pretty decent but nothing really special. Crab cakes were swimming in a sauce and I really didn't like the sauce but crab cake itself was good. Fish and Chips looked pretty good too but we didn't feel like fried food so we passed on that. Pretty casual setting, reasonable price for food and beer menus.
Great fish taco's! They are a must:)
I've eaten here twice, most recently for the "all you can eat crab" on Tuesday nights. For $29, I was hoping for a bit more. The crab, while tasty, was on the dry side and hard to remove from the shell. I don't know if it was frozen & reheated or not. The crab was Dungeness & was served as three or four legs attached to a bit of the body. It came with melted butter. It really was all you can eat, and they were not shy about bringing bowls of crab by & asking if you wanted more.
The cheesy bread the meals come with is good, but more along the lines of something you would get at TGIF or the like. The rice & veggies served with the crab were fine, but nothing out of the ordinary. One dinner mate had the garlic mashed potatoes, and commented that they were on the dry side & wished they were creamier. She also had had the salad & commented that it was nice. My clam chowder was good, not great.
Our server, while maybe not the most experienced, was very friendly and helpful. The setting & view is great, and I have a feeling having lunch here is probably a good deal, especially if you can sit outside & enjoy the views. Personally, for dinner, I'm not inclined to go back. But, I'd like to come & have a beer & fries outside during the day.
