Kansas City BBQ to perfection with a wonderful selection of meat, sides, and a delicious sauce with a smokey, vinegar based, spicy, yet sweet combination, to make any BBQ lover feel like he/she is walking up the stairway to heaven.

As a food lover, being in Kansas City for a week means I will be trying at least 2 or 3 of the city's BBQ restaurants.  And so, after a few different upscale BBQ places were recommended to me by a local on my flight to KC, I asked him about good BBQ at "hole-in-the-walls", and he recommended Rosedale.  And he was right.  You go there for the FOOD, and the FOOD you get, and it's amazing.  A great selection of meat, including beef, ham, pork, turkey, chicken, or sausage, served smoked, with barbeque sauce, will make any foo lover drool.

When you walk in, walk right up to either of the two ends of the bar, and they'll take your order there.  After you order, you seat yourself, and they'll bring the food to the bar for you, when it's ready.  I had the beef dinner plate, served as strips of beef brisket, with sides of cole slaw, and beans, with two slices of white toast.  I added their fried onion rings, in lieu of the french fries.  When I got my plate, I drenched the meat in sauce, and off to the races.  My food was gone in less than 4 minutes.  The beef was cooked perfectly.  Great flavor, just a touch of smoke, with the delicious sauce. I really wanted to try the chicken as well as the "burnt ends", but didn't have space. My meal, with a drink cost $10.

The atmosphere is, well, it's a BBQ restaurant atmosphere.  The restaurant has been in operation for over 65 years, and although it looks like it has undergone multiple renovations over that time, it is needing another upgrade sometime in the next few years.  But what I love about this restaurant, is the priorities are straight.... on the food, where they should be.  Instead of upscale dining, and elaborate menus, they have concentrated on their food for almost 7 decades, and they have perfected it.  I'd rather have great food, than mediocre food at a more upscale place.

But I guess we'll find out how the other ones will rate.  I plan to go to Fiorella's Jack Stack, and perhaps Arthur Bryant's as well this week.  We'll see if I make it, and how they stack up.

Rosedale's was great food, and I would go there to have dinner with family or friends any day.  Not the place for a romantic date, or an upscale evening out.  I highly recommend it and I too put them  very high on my list of best barbecue and look forward to a return trip sometime for more, perhaps the chicken or burnt ends.

Round #4 Stop #2 BBQ quest

If this review was based solely on the food it would get a 3 and a half or 4, however...  This place was highly recommended as a place the local techs go to for lunch.  It is located closer into town in an older industrial area.  A funky old place.

Went in right after class to a pretty empty establishment, looks like most people get their Q to go.  Walked in and sat at the bar, was basically ignored so I got up and stood at the end of the counter to place my order because it looked like that was the place to get attention.

When I got to the front of the line I asked what one of the items on the menu was and got a quick answer.  I ordered what I thought was a pork and sausage combo dinner and asked it it came with sides and got a curt no.  So I ordered a side of corn nuggets.  I also ordered a beer.  I sat at the bar thinking if I did maybe it would get the point across that I wanted to eat in since I wasn't asked.

I got my order, it was packed to go, no beer.  So I left.  I dug into my eats and have to admit that it was tasty, a little dry because only sausage had sauce and when I was in I didn't know where to get extra sauce and for the first time in as long as I can remember I was intimidated from asking by the little old lady behind the counter.  The sausage was incredible.  The corn nuggets were excellent.

I will be back, after all the food was good.  Only this time I will be little more assertive in my ordering.

Staff is VERY friendly and easy going. They don't rush you like a lot of the other BBQ joints.

The fries were crinkles and overcooked. Nothing special here, but good with lots of ketchup.

I had the burnt ends and they gave me a huge portion for the 7.99 dinner with fries. Pretty lean and the fat was easy enough to log off if you care. I should have stopped eating it 1/2 way and took it home, but I didn't. BBQ COMA!!!!

Unlimited refills of sweet tea that was good.

If I could rate only on NO lines and quick service, I'd give it a 5!

I think people tend to either really like the sauce at Rosedale or can't stand it.  I'm on the end of finding it quite tasty...just enough spice, just enough sweet, and something I can't quite put my finger on...tamarind?  I'm not sure.

Yesterday I picked up our standard order : a sausage for each of us, an RC cola for each of us, fries, side of beans, side of slaw, small bottle of sauce, and some jalapeno poppers.

The slaw is pretty standard, but good.  The beans are fairly spicy, and have some nice chunks of meat.  I always find the fries to be real crispy, which I prefer over undercooked.  I use them as a vehicle for shoving more sauce in my face!  The poppers are nothing unusual, I just like them.  Again, delicious dredged in sauce.  Then there is the sausage...oh the sausage!  I've tried the ribs, and the turkey sandwich there, but the sausage is where it is at!!  It is split length wise down the middle, and tastes like heaven.  Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside.  I find myself thinking of it at least once a month, and just have to make the drive to get one.  Oh...the RC is the finishing touch.  If you are not going the beer route, definitely have a frosty can of RC.

Rosedale usually has some unique sides that aren't always available...different salads, cobbler, and corn nuggets to name a few.  The staff is always friendly, they know how to move a line, and there is ample seating inside with a giant bottle of sauce on each table.

So I had been to all the popular Kansas City BBQ joints and came up upon Rosedale's one day and thought, why the hell not?!  I had heard of it a little bit, being one of the not as popular places so I'm always up for good BBQ.

I was extremely disappointed to say the least.  Maybe the place usually puts out better food, but everything that my group ordered tasted like crap.  Between brisket, pork, turkey, and burnt ends nothing tasted mediocre.  Pork deserved the gold medal for tasting closest to average.  Hate to slam a restaurant so much, but the burnt ends were dry, did not have that sexy crust, and was just blaaaah.  French fries were nothing to write home about, the other sides were okay.  But how hard is it to make decent beans?

Do youself a favor, IMHO, go to one of the well-known BBQ joints in town, especially LC's and Joe's.  They are popular for a reason.

Oh Rosedale's - I lost my barbeque virginity to you and you're still my first love!

When I first visited KC ten years ago, I was under the impression that the word "barbeque" was a verb ("Hey Jen, let's barbeque some salmon tonight!") rather than a noun. After being set straight by my Midwestern-born boyfriend, he took me to Rosedale's to introduce me to the world of Kansas City barbeque. And although meat has never been one of my favorite foods, I was anxious to try this regional delicacy. I ordered up a barbeque turkey sandwich, some fries, and never looked back.

Ten years and several visits later, Rosedale's is ALL about the fries and the sauce. The fries are crinkle cut and super crispy just I like them. I can't identify the flavor of the oil they use, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it isn't the least bit heart healthy. The sauce is unlike any other barbeque sauce I have tasted (and I have since tried the barbeque at several places around the country) and I love the stuff - I'm told that it's nutmeg that gives it the unique flavor.

The meat - well, admittedly I'm no expert but I've found both the turkey and the burnt ends to be sufficiently lean and tasty to suit my preference for not a lot of fat on my meat.

I give this place five stars for the fries and sauce, and three for the meat, which averages out to a four star rating. I'll be back next time I'm in KC.

I went here recently since everyone was robotically waiting on Oklahoma Joe's ( I have yet to try to this seemingly over-hyped place).  They threw me a sandwich, a hot pickle, and an RC.  I blacked out for a minute but when I came to it was gone so I guess I liked it enough.

I had my first sampling of Rosedale barbecue last month.

Sadly I'm pretty sure it will be my last.  The ribs were over-cooked and stringy with chunks of fat.  The fries were cooked in cold grease and were soggy and pretty darn nasty.  Their sauce is sweet and spicy with a hint of cinnamon or allspice in the background.  My Dad picked it up, so I'm not sure of the facilities.

But do try it.  A lot of people say its really good, but it wasn't my cup of tea.  I'd try Jackstack (for good meat) or Gates for some killer sauce.

Maybe I'm not a BBQ expert, but these were o.k. We shared a dozen ribs with fries and a side of slaw. The ribs (pork) were a bit dry on the ends, and had a quite a bit of fat - is that normal? The fires were well received by my husband, but I like them a bit more skinny. The slaw was o.k. I'm not thrilled about the sauce (spicy, but very tomato paste-like tasting).
Service is great, fast and friendly.
This is my second time visiting the joint and I remain lukewarm about it.

I was down around this place for something else, so I decided to give this place a try as I had heard good things from at least a person or two.   I went for lunch today and had a combo dinner.     She said it normally comes with beef and ham.  I asked for something besides ham and she offered pork.    I agreed.   The meal comes with cole slaw, beans and fries.   While I waited for the 4 seconds it took for the food, I saw that Rosedale won a "Best of KC" for their fries.    Well, hot damn, I thought...    Well here's the food.   Wtf?   They are your standard Cysco krinkle cut fries you got in the high school cafeteria.    Ok, whatever...  now the meat.    The pork was long and widely cut and not shredded at all, it was served cold.   Not just luke warm, it was downright cold.    The beef brisket that lay underneath was fairly hot, but it was dried out and was at the stage where it was falling apart from itself b/c it was dry.   The cole slaw?   You know that green slaw that is finely chopped?  You get it at the grocery store?   That's what they serve.   The beans were damned good.  Great flavor.   The sauce was pretty awesome too.      Al in all, I have to say I was greatly dissapointed.     I did get a takeout order of ribs for tonight, so I will try and edit in after I have them.       I've had WAY over my fair share of bbq in various KC restaurants, and I have to say this place isn't worth the drive for me.   If I lived within 3 miles, they might see me again.   *** edit in for the ribs.   well, i wish i something good to report.  nope.   ribs weren't anything that great.   not even enough for another star.    i'm sick and tired of KC bbq joints dissapointing me.    how the faken hard is it to make bbq?   NOT THAT HARD.  i do it all the time and i am a complete idiot.
