14 reviews for Rose of India
I must have passed by this shack hundreds of times without giving it much notice. On my way to Chinatown for lunch I decided to finally pull into this parking lot to see what it was all about. I was definitely second guessing as I walked in to find I was the only person there...and clearly, you aren't coming here for the decor either.
But it ended up being a nice surprise, and this place gets 4 stars more for value than anything else. Lunch value that is. This place loads you up with decent Indian eats for an inexpensive lunch price.
Most Indian joints I've been to for lunch serve you the meal and that's it. To my surprise Rose of India starts you off with papadam with traditional chutney, and 2 dipping sauces. After this, a pretty good Mulligatawny soup.
I ordered the Chicken Vindaloo, and asked for it spicy. For the first time in a while, a resto actually make something that fit the term spicy. It wasn't blazing, but it hit the spot. The Vindaloo sauce was rich and had nice bones to it. The chicken was a bit overcooked but a good portion for lunch...got quite a bit of it. Potato was cooked perfectly but I only found 2 chunks of potato which was a bit disappointing. A nice plate of basmati rice along with it.
Another surprise was they sent out some naan along with my lunch. Again, something you'd typically pay extra for at most places. Free naan? Can't complain about that!
Overall, quite a bit of food for lunch...I found another lunch spot with great value.

My good friend and I really enjoyed the "Executive Lunch Special". Great Tandori, very tender. The curry and birany were also quite good with only medium spice. They bring you a nice warm naan for free with the meal and you get out for about 20 bucks plus tip for two. The service was good (I have eaten here 3 time for lunch and it usually kinda quite) We were quite full and will be ready to go back soon. With the departure of Himilayas this will be my new "go to" for Indian food!
This place is never, ever busy. Even before you've tasted a crumb, you feel like you stumbled on something hidden-away and special. Fast-to-mild service.
The dhal is very good. Not as a good as what Udipi offers, but close enough. Same with the eggplant bhorta and curries. Very good entrees across the board. The naan is superior and fluffy to the hilt. Now you got it.
Great rice pudding. It's probably somewhat hard to screw up rice pudding, but they do it WELL. Drool fuel, seriously. I end up stuffing myself to the nines but always manage to enjoy the pudding.

The menu here is great for lovers of Indian food that prefer meat, especially the chicken dishes. My date and I have tried 4 entrees from Butter Chicken (delicious, prepared pretty mild, but I will order it spicier next time), Tandoori Chicken (Moist and nicely seasoned) and two curries whose names I will have to figure out how to spell but after having lived in India for a while, he thought they were excellent. Delicious very hot pickles also which he deemed authentic in flavor and spiciness.
To me, the best part of the meal is the garlic naan- a generous portion that is served piping hot, soft and crispy all at once and dripping with generous levels of garlic butter....swoon!
Like the previous reviews have indicated, the dining room is typical Indian decor and pretty empty but our service on the two dine-in visits has been just the right level of contact plus genuine warmth and friendliness.
They do offer delivery with $20 minimum order (not hard to do here as prices are in low to mid-teen's for entrees)
Solid 3.5 stars

I have been to so many Indian restaurants and having grown up eating this stuff so I know that the dishes that have the same name in every restaurant are pretty similar (ie, Chicken Tikka Masala has gravy). I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala from here and it was dry! No No, it was Tandoori Chicken. With rice. No, I cannot understand any dry chicken dish from an Indian restaurant being served with rice.
And we ordered 3 chicken dishes and we got one plate of rice.
Let's move on to the naan. The "naan" was bhatura. I hate bhatura. Naan does not mean give us bhatura.
Now, the delivery. The food came quick but the total was $60. For 3 dishes that were each $10 a pop and 3 naans. Naans were $10. Oh, and they weren't naans!
Not going back. Sorry.

I had driven past Rose of India a few times and thought I should give them a try on my next Indian food trip. So when I had a really bad day yesterday, I needed some comfort food and let's face it........ carbohydrates equal comfort food. So it was off to Rose of India for dinner last night with Laura.
We also had a friend of ours who is from west India to join us, after all, she turned us on to the hands down best Indian food restaurant in all of Atlanta. Of course I am referring to Cafe Bombay and I really wanted to know her thoughts on this place as well.
Laura and I shared the appetizer for 2 which was most excellent, and what I thought would set the bar for the rest of the meal. The plate came with Shekh Kabob, chicken tikka, Simosa and onion Bhabjee
For dinner we shared the Chicken Tikka Masala the Paneer Tikka Masala and the chicken Korma. Rice accompanies the meal, and we ordered Naan and 2 Parmesan cheese Naan's as well. Our friend was quiet disturbed by the Parmesan cheese Naan, so I had that all to myself.
To my surprise, everything came out pipping hot. Especially the Naan. It was soft, crispy and pipping hot all in one. This is something Cafe Bombay has yet to perfect. so plus one star for that.
But! Sadly, that plus one star gets taken away when I noticed that every dinner item we ordered, seemed to have a very sweet taste. Our Indian friend said the cook must add sugar to all of the dishes. Ummm.......I like sugar in my sweet tea and ice cream. Not in my Indian food. Minus one star for all the added sugar. No wonder our nation is a nation of fatty's.
Probably the best part about the night was the service. I have to say it was impeccable. But then again, we were one of only 3 tables in the entire restaurant. So like other reviewers have said, I too hope they get more business coming there way. But then again, they will have to lower their prices if they want that. Your in Chamblee for crying out loud. You can't charge Mid Town prices for sub-par sweetened Indian food.
Like the definition of what a 2 star review means, meh! I've experienced better. Not saying they aren't good. It's just that I have had better. But go see for yourself.

This is my back up Indian spot. When I'm too lazy to drive to Bhojanic in Decatur, I swing by Rose Of India for take out. I dined in once and, honestly, it was so dead it was disconcerting.
That aside, the food is quite good. I don't get to eat Indian much (the wife's not a fan), so when I do, I always get the same thing--veggie samosas, garlic naan and chicken tikka masala.
I think last Sunday might have been an off night, because the samosas weren't as good as they usually are and the naan was ward-off-vampires heavy on the garlic. The chicken, however, was perfectly cooked and had the requested amount of heat.
If you live in the area, it's definitely worth trying. You might want to do carryout though unless you feel like having the entire dining room to yourself.

The dishes here were really hit or miss. Some things compared very favorably with other indian restaurants I've been to (the naan and the chicken vindaloo), but other things were very far below my expectations (the lamb tikka and the chicken tikka masala). The chicken tikka masala was especially disappointing; it was very sweet for some reason. When I mentioned (complained) to the waiter, he said that it was preferred that way in the area in general? Anyway, the wait staff was very friendly and helpful. When we left the chicken tikka mostly untouched, we were given a discount on our meal and on our next meal.
I've been here twice and both times happy with everything. The food is great, served quickly and in a nice progression. The surroundings are a bit 'homemade' but it adds to the charm. Staff has been attentive both times i've been. Only complaint is last time i was there the music was off and it got creepy quiet (being as how it's NEVER packed). Overall great spot to try different types of curry and sweat!

This place is very good. I've had a difficult time finding a good North Indian restaurant around here. I have a standard thing I get when I got to Indian restaurants, Saag Paneer, Chicken Tikka Masala, Naan, and Mango Lassi.
Well, we took my mom, stepdad, sister and the rest of our clan. We ordered a lamb dish (maybe Lamb Rogan or something like that), okra, Spinach and potato, and Chicken Tikka Masala and some Naans. Everything was really good. The lamb was a little bit too spicy for me personally (I know the desi girl can handle heat; I'm so ABCD) but my husband and stepdad loved it. The Chicken Tikka Masala was the best I've had in Atlanta so far. We ordered our food medium spicy. I couldn't have handled more heat. The Mango Lassi was delicious, tangy and sweet. I wish the Naans were a bit fluffier. Everything tasted homemade like I went to my Auntie's house and my cousins had cooked and let me tell you my cousins can cook real good.
I wish they had the Saag Paneer but they didn't have any paneer. How sad but I'm definitely going to go back. One thing, I wish they had more sweets like Pistachio Kulfi and Ras Malai.

I recently decided to try Rose of India because I was trying to get bonus miles with Skymiles dining and was looking for somewhere close to home. Although I have been a Himalayas girl since I was tiny, I thought it might be nice to try something else. I really like the tandoori chicken and naan and mango ice cream a lot, but didn't like the aloo gobi or pilaw rice. The former didn't taste like the version I am used to and the latter was flavorless and gummy.
It is not somewhere that draws crowds, there are never more than one or two other tables, but service is not great. The waiter table ratio may be one to one, but you may have to wait several minutes to order and have hard time getting drinks refilled. All in all, I would probably go there if I had a craving for Indian food on the weekend when Himalayas is likely to be crowded and slow or if I needed bonus miles on Delta, but it isn't my first choice.
It really doesn't make sense how good this food is. I mean, seriously. This is what to get when you go (for 100% satisfaction): Vegetarian Special for One" with saag paneer and paneer makhani. Get the rice pudding for dessert. You will NOT be dissapointed. Trust me on this.
Sadly, whenever I'm there it's always empty - I hope they start getting more business soon because I couldn't survive if they closed :-\

Atlanta has no shortage of Indian restaurants, but many disappoint with their watered down versions of Indian food. The owner has opened a small spot near Brookhaven where all of the dishes are solid and delicious. Service is always friendly and the restaurant even delivers within a limited radius. The lamb vindaloo (a spicy lamb dish with potatoes) and smoky eggplant bharta (Roasted eggplant) are always good choices.
Zyka -- that plastic-fork casual eatery in Decatur -- has long reigned over Indian eateries in Atlanta. Meet your match. Rose of India is housed inside a nondescript building on Peachtree Industrial, past Oglethorpe University. You can easily miss it. However, its curry is pretty unforgettable, especially the one with shrimp. It was spicy but sweet and exotic enough to linger in your palate for a long time. In addition, a friend of mine and I ordered a platter of appetizer samplers. Worth its money. A combination of that, plus the curry, the Nan and Diet Coke stretched my stomach lining that day. It was a happy day. Even better, the price for two was under $30. When we complimented the food to the waiter -- who was also the owner -- he brought out the chef. He introduced himself and briefly gave us his credential. Pretty impressive etiquette for a restaurateur whose meals are pretty much $10 or less. I hope this place stays around for a long time. By the way, did I mention that the Nan is fantabulous?
