So during a walk-away lunch @ Sunset Gower Studios, my friend and decided to eat @ Roscoe's.  This was my first experience of trying chicken and waffles....

WoW!  What a concept!  The sweet from the maple syrup on the waffles plus the salty, but greasy yum chicken was an awesome combo!

Needless to say, my first experience was great! :D

The Roscoe's experience was great.  We went with a group and ordered a little of everything.  We were not disappointed.   Great food and service along with a unique atmosphere.  I ordered the fried chicken livers.  I have not had them since I was a kid.  They were outstanding.  The portion was so big, that even I cold not finish them.

Roscoes's is an institution in LA.  A must if you are a fan of Fried Chicken, waffles and Soul Food!

Eatin GOOD in the HOOD.

Finally, after anticipating a visit to Roscoe's for the first time, the hype is true! What do they put in their waffle mix?! Best waffles ever. Chicken was juicy and tender, perfect with their Rooster hot sauce. Potato salad was good too, the corn bread taste like any other corn bread. This place is dope and I will go back. Only a 5 minute wait on a Sunday afternoon.

Itz not bad but very over rated. it has a very salty taste to it. Not much meat on the chicken. But i have to say chicken with waffle, great idea. The combo couldn't be any better. Their sides are not too bad, i wish the service would be better here. You know how it is once you're business is doing so well. Will be back like 4 times a year..a little over priced too!

Fried Chicken + Buttery Waffles = Yum Yum Yum

As soon as I got off the plane at LAX, we headed straight to Roscoes.  Boy oh boy! I was so excited! We didnt have a long wait & got seated as soon as we walked in. Our server was quick, ordered drinks & took our food order. They have so much to chose from, I wanted 1 of each thing on the menu.  So we split a platter, 4 pieces of chix & 2 waffles less than $15. Thats pretty awesome & a lot of food for just one person.
Chicken was perfectly seasoned & battered with crispy goodness and so damn juicy! Perfection on a plate!
Dont even get me started on those waffles....AMAZING! They literally put a mini ice cream scoop of butter on top of the waffles.  This would make Paula Deen so proud!
The sweet tea is just how I like it! With a hint of raspberry flavoring, so refreshing!
I could seriously come to Roscoe's everyday! I wish they would come to Houston!

Wow. I am truly very sad to write this...but I have to. After years of being the Only person of Color who has not had a waffle and chicken at Roscoe's, I have finally tried what I thought I was missing. Goodness. If I only knew how mediocre my meal was going to be---I seriously would have popped an Eggo in the toaster and fried my own dang wing myself!!! I came with one of my girls on a Friday night and it was pretty packed. I guess this was the spot to be at to start the weekend for many. I did like that there was a little bit of everybody in the crowd. Back to the food. My wings were decently seasoned but not very meaty. Maybe next time, if I decide to give it another chance, I'll get a different part of the bird. Now my waffles.....my waffles were nothing to sing to the Heaven's about. I know, I know, you're thinking, "Dang girl! It's a dang waffle. C'mon!" But I hold my Breakfast Carbs to a very high standard. Sometimes they are THE ONLY REASON I wake up in the morning. Now my waffles....My waffles were  plain ol' thin waffles that did not leave me wanting more. But what DID catch my attention were several scantily clad "Hoochies" that happend to walk by our table several times. Ladies please, I am already disappointed with the meal that I had waited so long to have to be able to join the many that have eaten ay Roscoe's---and now, you've gon done made me almost throw up at the sight of things that I CERTAINLY did not need to see.
This was NOT an evening of Eatin good in the neighborhood.

I love LA.  This was my first Roscoe's visit and it was full other firsts.

First time we found parking in LA and it didn't take more than 10 minutes.

First time I saw a guy three times my weight cursing at the hostess.

First time I've seen so much butter on my waffle I thought it was mashed potatoes.  I was not a huge fan of the waffles here.  I like mine crisp on the outside and soft in the middle.  This was just soft all over.  TWSS.

First time to try chicken and waffles and I must say I'm not a fan of eating them both at the same time.  As Bourdain said, "I like fried chicken.  I like waffles.  I don't like them together."  I loved their fried chicken.  I want some right meow.

Roscoe's is an institution.  I want more.  I need more.  Bring it on.

I thought i reviewed this place by now, but I guess not.  I'll be honest and say that I didn't go to Roscoe's for nine years because I thought it was totally overrated.  I went a few times in 2000 (the Gower location), and I just thought it wasn't that great, and didn't feel like I wanted to come back.

Well fast-forward nine years, and I'm always heading out to Taj Mahal on Pico... and every time I go to Taj Mahal, I pass by Roscoe's.  I was surprised because I didn't know there was a location there, but I also saw the Pico location had an actual parking lot.  I decided I'd go there again someday just to give it another chance.

So one day, it was about 2:30 PM and I was hungry, and figured I should go to Roscoe's (I've gone several times since then as well).  I would have avoided the lunch rush, and it was too early for the dinner crowd.  Perfect.

I go and park my car (even though it was nearly 3 PM there were only about 2 parking spots left), walk inside, and seated about a minute later in a booth by the door.  I ordered the dish that comes with two waffles and a leg + thigh.  I also ordered a side of rice w/ gravy.

The food came out fairly quickly, and the chicken was really good.  Perhaps it was because I'd ordered dark meat, and maybe they just suck at preparing chicken breast (which is what I'd had at the Gower location).  So the chicken was good, and the waffles were really good as well.

The rice was also light and fluffy and tasted really good with the thick, flavorful gravy.  It was tasty.

So the reason I give it three stars is because the service is below-average.  It's not horrible, but it's just... 'bleh'... even when it's not busy.  Also, the way you tip if you use credit/debit is kind of weird, like you have to tell the cashier how much beforehand.

Also, the restaurant is really loud sometimes.  Like people who talk really really really really loud and laugh really really really really really loud.  I'll leave it at that.

Plenty of parking in their lot! I came with a party of 4 & we were seated right away. It was dinner time & there weren't a lot of people? That kind of made me nervous, it was my first time eating at Roscoe's. My cousin mentioned this place to me before & she said it was pretty good so I've been wanting to try it for quite some time.

I forgot the name of my order but my friend suggested it, he was actually the one who decided to eat dinner here. My boyfriend got the Sir Michael, don't know why that name stuck to me. Okay, so my plate came with white breast & wing along with 2 waffles. Fried chicken taste like any other fried chicken that I've had. Waffles were better than average, but wasn't CRAZY delicious. I tried the chicken with gravy, that was pretty good. The grits? Not a fan. Our plate of food was around $10 ~ $12 each. Tried it once, I wouldn't come back or suggest it to any of my friends.

I love Roscoe's.  I get the 1/4 chicken smothered in gravy and waffles - all kinds of delicious!  I've been to this location twice, and service was decent both times.  The first time I went on a Sunday afternoon and there was a wait for our table of 8, but it wasn't too bad - maybe 10 minutes?

The neighborhood is questionable, but I don't think it's a problem.  SO worth going there for Roscoe's, and street parking is easy.

My first experience at Roscoe's was in the Long Beach location which I have to say was a better experience than this one. I ordered the Country Boy w/ fries this time. The wings were delicious and same with the waffle. I think the waffle was actually better at this location than at the Long Beach one. But the item that really amazed me about Roscoe's were the fries I had. They were soggy and well seasoned.

The sucky thing at this location was they used skinny fries. Skinny and soggy does not bold well together. And they didn't even bother to season it for you! They brought you a cup of seasoning on the side. This is stupid because there's no way to perfectly divide the seasoning among the fries so some end up drenched in saltiness and some fries are barely sprinkled. I tried spreading it around but it was just a total fail. I had to stop eating because some of it was just too salty after I tried spreading it evenly. Now if they had done it for me, it would have been evenly spread and a much better experience.

Another new thing I tried was the mac and cheese here. That was simply heaven. Never has fat tasted so good. Haha The bad thing is that it was a side order for 4.40 and it was frickin tiny. The bowl was the size of my blackberry. And i had asked my friend to split it with me so i had half of a blackberry of mac and cheese which is tiny and not enough.

I'd suggest not ordering the #1, the one that saves 1/4 of a chix. Everyone at my table except me ordered that and they each ended up with like two pieces of chicken and two waffles. They all felt ripped off cause they were expecting 1/4 of a chicken. They should've known better considering I warned them Roscoe's skimps you on your chicken.

Parking at this location is hard. Much harder than the Long Beach location. At Long Beach, we had to wait 20 minutes for a table and we had a parking spot in the lot right away. At this location, our wait was like 5 minutes and we had to pay for metered parking on the side of the building. And there's only three of those spots. So once that's gone, you're going to have to go looking around the neighboorhood. I would have to say the parking lot in Long Beach is bigger.

Service was good. Our waitress remembered all our orders without needing to write a single thing down. The food came way faster here than at Long Beach but I guess no wait to sit down = no wait for food or less people = less wait.

Lastly, I'm not sure if it was cause I overate cause I was trying to finish alll the food or I was scarfing it down because I was starving at the beginning, but after I finished it all, I felt like throwing up by the time I got home.

Shady location. Atmosphere akin to an underground brothel. Overpriced, relatively basic menu.

Cosmetic shortcomings aside, I still love Roscoe's. The food is pure greasy, heart-attack-inducing heaven. You can't live in LA without having tried Roscoe's chicken and waffles at least once; you just can't. It might seem like an odd combination, but just give it a chance. I don't know what Roscoe's puts in their waffles, but sinfully good when doused with melted butter and syrup. My friend said they put cinnamon in the waffles, which might explain why they're so tasty. Best thing is they're not crispy at all -- I hate when a waffle is so much crisp that you can't taste the batter. The fried chicken is great, too, although for $8.50 it'd be nice if you got more than three wings.

Service was surprisingly good for a place that looks so sketchy on the outside. They have a lot, too, which pretty much cements the fact that Roscoe's is the best place ever.

To some foreigners the combination of "chicken and waffles" might sound like an awful mistake, but dear friends, think twice. After spending some time at Roscoe's, you will ask yourself: Is there any better way to get your (fried) chicken than with waffles?

I heard it all started in Harlem back in the early last century and then made it over to the West. Try the "Sir Michael" (1/4 chicken smothered with gravy & onions, grits and fluffy biscuit) or "The Stubby" (Chicken breast with leg or wing, grits, 2 large eggs, and fluffy hot biscuit).

Yes, not the healthiest choice but hey it's SOULFOOD. Worth a trip. Soulfood at it's best.

My sisters and I love this place.  We go here once a year for special occasion usually at the request of my sisters.  Great fried chicken. Great Big Mama's Special. I think that's what you call it. It consist of potatoes with gravy and onion/cheese scramble eggs.  Oh so good.

The waffle/ fried chicken combination is so good.   I love their sunset, sunrise, eclipse lemonade drinks which consist of a combination of either lemonade, fruit punch, or orange juice.  I like it how you can move your straws through the different layers and drink the different flavors.

I like this restaurant because the food is consistently good.  Location is questionable.  It's not in the best of area but its worth it to eat here.  Parking lot is a bit small.  It can get busy depending on what time or day you go.  Just get ready to wait on a weekend. Portions are big so you can share.  Everything there is good so definitely check it out and try it.  Its not something you can indulge everyday because its fattening.  You only live life once, so give it a try once in awhile.

Chicken and waffles just like how my mama makes it! Oh wait, I'm asian. Nevermind.

The combination sounds odd but wait til you sink your teeth into this "PERFECT" fried chicken and waffles that can make you forget your name! After hearing about this place on movies, t.v., even John West (the singer), I had to try it. I've been coming back since.

I grew up without chicken and waffles on my list of comfort foods, boy was I missing out!

Instead of going to the San Diego County Fair, my cousins and I decided to take a trip to Roscoe's since the fair is way too expensive.  The little lunch trip ended up costing around $3,000 dollars.  The transmission on the van we were driving blew so we were stuck on the side of the freeway in Los Angeles, waiting for someone to rescue us and take us back home to San Diego.

That's why Roscoe's gets four stars.  The van couldn't handle the extra weight from those yummy waffles.  Or the chicken.  Or gravy. or mac and cheese,  Thanks a lot Roscoe's.

They should rename it "Roscoe's House of Awesome and Shutupandeatit."

Or rename it "Roscoe's House of Slapyourmomma and Good."

Yum.
I think I'm going to go over there right now.

Food: Best fried chicken on either coast. This is what comfort food is all about, albeit on the salty side. They have gots to fry it in like trans fat, peanut, butter, pork oil, how else can it be so tasty? Then the gallon of gravy dumped on top with no regard to safety or health for that mater, yet the skin somehow stays crispy? Now this 8th wonder of the world gets topped of with like a pound of butter. Surviving the mini-stroke I received just by looking at it, I proceed to devour it and can honestly tell you that I am willing to flirt with death again. Crunchy skin, moist white and dark meat, and the gravy just lubes it down (o god that sounded so wrong).

Well onto some low points, the waffle flat out sucked. Tasteless, unless you actually use that side dish of butter provided and gallon of syrup. The biscuit was flat and soggy too. Unless soggy style is LA style and I'm missing something, this is not good eats.

Drink: Down that soda and order another. Then another. You might want to consider a soda to go too.
Me: Food is salty
Colonel Hans Landa: It's a bingo!

Service/Crowd/Ambiance: Diner service, diner layout, not diner food. Get a booth over the table, more spacious. Crowd has a fair mix of locals and tourists. You can spot the tourists taking pictures out by the entrance where the Roscoe's logo is. I was there waiting for my turn too. Head over to the Grove afterwards and walk the itis off, there is no where else in LA one can walk it seems.

The OG Roscoe's in my book, this spot never disappoints. Order the 1/2 chicken + 2 waffles, get it covered in gravy - you won't leave hungry.

The interior might be lit with red fluorescent tubes and those stupid Pitbull ads might be everywhere but the food is delicious and one-of-a-kind.

OMG what can I say about ROSCOE'S.  Everybody and their mama, including their mama's mama, be trying to eat here jeesh.  Well luckily there wasn't a long wait.  The waiters work extra hard to get you your food so they can get customers in & out.  I got my food in about 15 minutes it was really quick.  I ordered the country boy platter=waffle + 3 wings and I added a side of yams.  The waffle has a cinnamon taste that my taste buds just couldn't get over! The chicken was well seasoned, hot right from the frier.  The yams were so sweet they melted in my mouth! I wish I could eat here every single morning.  I LOVE YOU ROSCOE!

Oh yes yes yes! ROSCOESSSSS. It's good enough to make me whip out the ALL CAPS. And it's good enough that I would pull a Kanye West on any other chicken and waffles places and proudly interrupt: I'M HAPPY FOR YOU, I'MMA LET YOU FINISH... but ROSCOE'S HAS GOT THE BEST CHICKEN AND WAFFLES OF ALL TIME!!!11

Yes I'm that corny. And yes, in 3 months people will have forgotten the Kanye reference, but damnit, it's September 2009 and I love me some Chicken & Waffles! I'm a big fan of the chicken covered in gravy with waffles and a biscuit. Oh, that oniony gravy and the crispy fried chicken, letting the juices drip and seep onto the waffle and splashing on some hot sauce with every bite....

This is a definite go-to if you're anywhere near LA. It's THE house of chicken and waffles, with the atmosphere to match! Nothing gimmicky, just good, cozy food and a great place to hang out. And if you're a vegetarian, (and I'm usually with my veggie brothers and sisters) but at Roscoe's, I feel bad for ya, son.

I honestly don't see what is the big idea about this. When I went the chicken was dry.. and the waffles were like any other waffles. Don't get me wrong, it was good but it wasn't "OMG ROSCOE'S IS SO GOOD."

I think people just hyped it all up.. like everything else in Cali..
hehe. anyways.. yea the food was alright. the price was decent.

but it smells like oil and i feel like oil is seeping into my pores as i just sit there.

by the way. if you are on a diet and you want to give yourself a treat.. find somewhere else with madd calories. This is not the place to waste that reward.. :)) but good luck on your diets!

I know that it sounds like a weird combination but it's amazing! The chicken has great flavor to it and it always good. The waffles have a cinnamon flavor to them that makes them irresistible. Every time I'm in town, I never miss an opportunity to eat at Roscoe's at least once. This last experience, however, may be the last time I go there due to sanitary issues...

So there I was at Roscoe's waiting for my food when I decided to use the restroom before chowing down. This Roscoe's only had two stalls, and when I entered, both were occupied. So I wait, and wait, and wait patiently in silence...until the silence is broken by a woman moaning, "Ohh shit. Oooh. Ooh. Damnit," followed by more painful groans. I was HORRIFIED. Either this lady was having a really tough doo-doo, or she was doin' the damn dirty by herself in there!!!

This went on and on for a few more minutes and I was praying the lady in the first stall would finish first (ironically, she too was taking a poopy). But by bad luck, the Moaner came out first. She came out, holding her stomach, wincing her face, and still saying, "ohh shit...ohh." AND btw, she was one of the employees!

Man, I was SCARED to go in there, but I HAD to pee pretty badly. And so I do the sign of the cross, and go in...but not before I see her EXITING the restroom WITHOUT WASHING HER HANDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *dies*

And you wonder why the batter on that chicken tastes so good?! *sigh* Anyway, the chicken and waffles were still good, but not as great as I remember them back in the day. I've now had better, namely in Houston at Breakfast Klub: http://www.yelp.com/bi... .

If you come here, just try not to think about how they might've prepped your food. =)

Roscoe's lives up to it's hype! It's been a while since I've been here! I need to go again!

POSITIVES:
-THE FOOD...everything there is great!

-THE LEMONADE looks and tastes great! look at everyone's pictures if you don't believe me!

-Every now and then, you will catch famous athletes and peoples here. When I went here before, the whole UCLA basketball team stopped by.

-I believe they filmed a scene from "First Sunday" here.

-The people outside sometimes sell good stuff! haha!

NEGATIVES:
-the drive if you're far.

-parking can suck, but people are going in and out of this place...it really depends on the time you go here.

FINAL THOUGHTS/SUGGESTIONS:
-Try the "BIG MAMA SPECIAL"....enough said.

How can you go wrong with Chicken & Waffles??? You can't.

On our quick trip to LA, the one place I really wanted to go was Roscoe's. Mostly because I had never gotten to try it the previous times I've been to LA, but also for the shear nostalgia.

We hit up the eatery on our last day for a late breakfast/early lunch. I ordered nothing other than the fried chicken with 2 waffles and a side of the cheesy eggs on recommendation from my friend. I was anxiously awaiting my food when it finally arrived. As I tore into my chicken I was pleasantly surprised. The flavor reminded me of the fried chicken my grandma used to make when I was a kid!

Then came the waffles. I love waffles, but these waffles were not lovable. They were limp, luke warm and not even butter and syrup could give them life. Needless to say I was disappointed. Thank goodness for cheesy eggs! They totally saved the meal from being as bad as it could have been. Nice fluffy eggs with ooey-gooey cheese and onions!

Roscoe's I gave you a chance, and you didn't quite follow through. That's okay though, it's not like I have to eat there everyday.

First time here. I had a liver omelet- if you like eggs and you like liver, this is heaven folded in half and served to you on a plate.

Decent service, good food, ok prices but it was LOUD in there. So loud, my friend and I walked out with scratchy dry throats from shouting.

Now if that doesn't classify as a good meal, what does?

I have a soft spot in my heart for restaurants where the name tells you exactly what you're getting.  Waffles and fried chicken are an amazing combination, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I've been here twice and thoroughly enjoyed both experiences.  The atmosphere is very casual and diner-ish, but you shouldn't come here if you give a damn about that. Service is good and they have a good selection of drinks.

It's all about the combo; I went with #2, dark meat, gravy on the side.  First of all, the waffle batter they use is, as they claim, exceptionally good and really makes the experience.  There is better fried chicken to be had, but the chicken here is good.  Having waffle, syrup, chicken and gravy all in the same bite may sound gross, but if you try it you'll understand its awesomeness.

i give this place 3 stars because the first time i went the food was great but the second time i almost got into a fight with some punk ass muthafucka standin outside in the parking lot with his homeboys tryin to showboat but instead of showboatin for his homeboys he almost got his ass whipped.. now that i am finished with that part of the story lets step past the parking lot and into the restaurant
              THE GOOD:
1. the service was good
2. the food was good

              THE BAD:
1. after eating i started to sweat and feel a little sick
2. on the way out i had to see that same chump from earlier

              THE UGLY:
1. once in the car i was still feeling sick
2. on the start of our long trip back to San Francisco i threw up in the car... it was a very ugly scene.....

The first time I ate here wasn't a very memorable experience...I can't really remember much except for my trading a chicken wing for waffles with my friend...haha. However, this time I went when there was no wait/crowds, and I got a big chicken breast and waffles (Carol C. Special), and it was a lot yummier than I remembered it! The chicken was perfectly fried- no soggyness at all, and the waffles were cinnamon-y and delicious. We also had the corn bread, which was alright...not the best, but good enough. I also had the drink...can't remember the name of it...but it was a combination of fruit punch, orange juice and lemonade...and it was the best part of the meal! I'm going to try to make this at home!!
The service was a bit unattentive, but at least the food was fast once they FINALLY took our order.
I'll definitely have to give it another go...very soon!

I give the waffle  4 stars

This was my very first time at the Roscoe's chain and it was aight, yes I said aight. Maybe I have to come here more often for other items but based on just the wings and waffle, it was ok. The waffle was the BOMB mmmmm. The wings were tasty but not like my mom's. The mac and cheese was weak, and thank god my Soul food kitchen came to the rescue the next day.  Im keeping this one short since this restaurant didn't really inspire me. I will say thank god it wasn't crowded because I thought it was going to be a zoo at 12:30am on a Friday and if I had to wait to eat so so wings I would have been pissed. Oh the service was superb....Again I will come back to try other items.

Great Buckwheat Waffle.  Food is usually consistent although it's just average.  Need some renovating. For the amount of business it does, makes me mad that I have to sit in such a filthy looking place while I'm eating.

I heard the place isn't black owned. What a shame that the most well known kind of "Soul Food" spot in LA is not black owned. Is this exploitation?

I usually get intimidated when I write a review that already has so many previous postings.  I mean, after 430 reviews, what else is there to say?
Then I realized that the number of reviews shows how many people thought this place was "remarkable".

My dad and my son joined me for a remarkable lunch.  Remarkable because how many times do you sit down with a giant plate of waffles butter and syrup and a side of fried chicken and gravy.  At least that's what I ordered.  Hey, when you go some place for the first time, you order the signature dish.  Like I always say, you don't go to Tito's Tacos and order the salad.  You know what I mean?  The waffles were a little soft for my taste, (I prefer them a little crispier) but were golden brown and very tasty.  The fried chicken was flavorful moist and delicious.  The breading did not overwhelm the meat.

My son had the fried chicken with grits.  Hey thought grits sounded cool.  He soon realized what "acquired taste" means.  Dad had the red beans, rice, fried chicken, corn bread and a side of potato salad.  All were fantastic.

The ambiance, inside and out, was classic L.A. people watching.  Drunk dudes flying by on their bicycles, bootleg Lakers t-shirt stand next to the parking lot, a line of people waiting to get in to eat featuring hookers, dads and kids in little league and karate outfits, several different races but mostly blacks.  The inside was well laid out, well lit, decent sized tables, hand written signs on the walls and well staffed.

A great flavor of city, food and people.

I never believed in my life that chicken and waffles would ever go together. But seriously, they do. I LOVE their waffles. And I LOVE their chicken. And I LOVE them together. My tummy gets full quick so I usually get a small meal, like the Carol C. Special (1 SUCCULENT breast and 1 DELICIOUS waffle).

When I have came here, I only waited the most for 10 minutes. The waiters are really nice and attentive. Also, try one of their mixed drinks. They are quite intriguing to the eye. I usually get the Sunset drink. Also, my friend went here once and met Shane Sparks (one of the judges on MTV's America's Best Dance Crew). So if you come here, you'll get good food and perhaps a celebrity siting!

Believe the hype. Roscoe's really is amazing. Waffles are lightly crisped on the outside and light on the inside. Tons of butter. Greasy, delicious fried chicken and awesome syrup. If I wasn't afraid of going in to cardiac arrest I'd have this for every meal (best part of C & W is it's appropriate for every meal). God Bless Roscoe's.

Oh, and don't piss off Momma.
