great chips and salsa.  great food.  great dessert.  and great service.  what more can you ask for?  this was one of the pricier mexican spots i ate at in san antonio, but still moderate and well well worth it.

what to order?  please get the chile relleno.  it's the most divine thing i've ever eaten.  good size filled with marinated beef and golden raisins and i hate raisins, but this is the best chile relleno i've ever tasted.  and for dessert, get the mexican chocolate flan soft as a mousse and goes down heavenly.

really delicious!

Sopa de tortilla, big plus, highly recommend.

A lot of interesting twists on old favorites, check.

Plenty of TVs, good place to watch a game. Actually, a ton of space, Texas-sized, one might say.

Just so happened I was watching my boy Aaron Rodgers beat the Cowboys, so the waiters/waitresses Dallas apparrel didn't bother me so much, when I was here.

Funny side note: my dad nearly choked on a hot pepper he wasn't prepared for.

I love Mexican food, Mexican food hates me three hours later.

My first five star review and its well deserved. Quite possibly some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. I ordered the chipolte chicken with spinach. The sauce was so delicious and perfect. .I can't even explain how happy I was eating this. Oh yeah, the salsa for the chips was fantastic! It was soooo YUMMY, seriously. I really wished I had the ability to take it to go but I was on a mission to the Alamo.  If I ever commit a crime and I'm on death row, this might be the place I order for my last meal. It's that good.

And WOW, be careful of just the house margarita. I drank it and 5 minutes later I was having the head spins. My server Jonathon told me they use Hornitos tequila. Definitely a kicker of a Rita!

Atmosphere was upbeat and exciting. Lots of locals. Most everyone around had an empty plate at the end of their meal. A clear and powerful sign of how good the food is here. I'm missing San Antonio already and the food at Rosario's.

After living in the heart of Tex-Mex for a while, I've seen two distinct types of the aforementioned cuisine:

The first is traditional Tex-Mex - the dishes like chili con carne, nachos, and chimichangas, and the variations like soft-shelled tacos and cheddar cheese - the things that are not inherently Mexican but have been eaten for so long by Americans that many believe them to have originated south of the border.

The second type of Tex-Mex is more of a nouveau -Mexican, which takes Mexican ingredients and Mexican dishes, but constructs them in ways that are decidedly not Mexican. I see very little of this type of cooking in the city, and that's a shame, because we often use the concept of "traditional" cooking as an excuse to remain in our comfort zone and avoid trying something new. It would seem to me that this type of cooking would be especially prevalent in a place like San Antonio where EVERYBODY is doing traditional Tex-Mex, but judging by the reviews on Yelp, most places can't even get that right.

Regardless, Rosario's falls into that second category of Tex-Mex, the one that aims to escape the boundaries of the traditional and play around a little bit. It's not a giant leap from the old standbys, but it's enough to let you know that something's different in a very good way.

The main dining area of Rosario's is a giant room with the bar in the middle. It's a very open space, which provides for some bad acoustics as the large crowds which have gathered to eat all try to talk over one another. The volume at which I had to speak to my waiter was more akin to what I would use at a club than most restaurants.

The complimentary salsa features roasted chiles and is quite tasty. I went with the chorizo and potato quesadilla  that others have suggested here and found the flavor of the chorizo to be masked by the potato and cheese. My entree was the flautas especialles, which featured my choice of meat, spinach, and chipotle mushrooms (whatever that is). They were crispy, featured decidedly Mexican flavors, and were also decidedly not Mexican. The barracho beans featured almost as much pork as beans. The meal went down well with a Modelo and I left full and happy.

While the food was good, it's probably on a four-star level for me. What gave it the extra star was that Rosario's is doing some things that not a lot of other restaurants are doing - experimentation - and sometimes that's the only way to get out of the old doldrum and make something unique.

HO LEEE GAWD. This is the best mexican food I've had in AGES... so good, in fact, that after eating dinner there last night we went back at lunch today for round 2 before splitting town.

I want to make sweet love to their smokey delicious salsa.  And their bacon-infused pintos?  Jesus H. Christ.  Just thinking about them makes my nether regions tingle.

My friend and I split the Flautas Especiales... Mary Mother of GAWD wow.  Steak, spinach, and chipotle mushrooms wrapped in a home-made flour tortilla and grilled to perfection...  It was even more perfect in my mouth.

Also, the servers all wear these t-shirts with a giant rosary with a cross printed on them.  It struck me as a tiny bit odd.

Man the only serious ding they get is regarding their bathrooms...  it's a bad bad story I don't want to get into, but they are horrible. I skipped their restrooms today and opted to use one at Whataburger instead.  That turned out to be a wise decision... it's just sad when a fast food establishment has a better restroom situation.

Yum Yum Yum!  After reading the reviews, I was super excited to come eat at Rosario's.  My boyfriend and I were looking for somewhere good since it was our last night here in San Antonio.

We walked there from our hotel (Hilton) and it was only about .6 miles away.  When we got there we had a good wait (about 45 minutes), but the live music really made the time go by fast!  When we got our table, we were very focused on our menu.

My boyfriend ordered a Dos Equis on tap which was about 5 dollars and I got a Strawberry Colada which was around 6 dollars.  The Strawberry Colada was really good!  I'm not a big mixed drink / slush / cocktail fan, but I drank it all up.  I liked the salsa that was on the table.  You could taste a smokey flavor.  I thought the chips were a bit stale.

We ordered the Queso Flameado with the Chorizo as an appetizer.  SO DELICIOUS.  I NEVER eat queso (I'm not a cheesy person foodwise) AND I am lactose intolerant, but boy was this worth it!  So greasy and yummy with the fresh tortillas.  WOW... That's all I can say.

I got the chicken and steak fajitas.  The meat was eh.  For some reason when I'm hungry I can NEVER resist fajitas because of the smell.  Anyway, I wasn't too impressed with the meat.  The steak was better than the chicken.   It came with beans with bacon and guacamole.

My boyfriend got the Chile Relleno.  That was some GOOD stuff.  The waiter said that was his favorite too.  So soft and flavorful.  :)  Very happy with that choice.

We only got through like 2 bites of our entrees before giving up and asking for a to go box.  We're weaksauce, but definitely enjoyed some good food at Rosario's.  We were also grateful that we were going to walk back to our hotel to help us digest.  We even walked on the stairs to our room on the 15th floor.  :)

They have the best salsa I've ever tasted.   Smokey, fresh goodness exploding in your mouth with a ninja like heat that catches up to you ever so stealth-fully.

Service was not so great, the place was very busy and being from out of town, we felt like we were selected for triage by out waiter.  Our drinks were empty more often than full, which was cruel CIA style torture with that succulent salsa begging to be eaten, followed by the ninja attack of heat...  I fealt like Homer Simpson,  "Mmmmm Salsa... DOH!! HOT HOT, must... drink... water..."

One of the kids found a hair in their enchilada and brought it to the waiters attention... his response was, "Oh that is the cilantro..."

2 Stars for the Salsa... if the waiter hadn't dissed, the salsa would have carried this place to a 4 or 5 star rating.

This is a very good restaurant not too far from downtown. Definitely worth visiting. The restaurant is huge and trendy. It was definitely a local "It" crowd.

I had the Tacos Cascabal and they were very good. The sauce was just excellent. The meat itself was a little greasy for my taste. The Tuna Margarita is worth trying. No tuna in the margarita :-)  Just the prickly pear juice. I also tried the Michelada. It was so-so. Stick to the margaritas.

This restaurant is great..... right in the center of downtown in a building that used to be a Ford dealership. It's usually pretty loud inside and it's usually packed full of people. The food itself is very good! Great Mexican food, typical of what you'll usually find in San Antonio. The salsa is always good (it's a roasted salsa, not a regular Tex-Mex salsa). This restaurant is good for family and for friends. If you arrive too late, parking can sometimes be an issue. Other than that.... great restaurant!

The best Mexican food we had on a week long trip in Texas. Even the salsa for the chips is top notch, again the best on the trip.

We were only there for lunch and is wasnt packed so I cannot comment on the noise level when it is full but it wasnt bad when we were there.

Go there, eat a lot and be happy.

Several locals recommended Rosario's, being sure to point out that they had some vegetarian options.
I was disappointed, and I left with a stomach ache.
I did appreciate that they star their veg options, and note that some can be prepared vegetarian. But other than that, I didn't think the food was all that good. The guac wasn't bad, but it was nothing special, and the margarita was a bit too sweet for my tastes.

Some local relatives brought me here on a visit to SA.  Mexican food in Texas is a little different than in California, but similar in a lot of ways.

The margaritas were great.  I also really liked the salsa and chips.  It was a little different than what I'm used to, but very, very good.

We had an appetizer called rajas de chile poblano con crema, which I've never seen before.  Strips of poblano chile and onion in a cream sauce served with warm corn tortillas.  It was good.

The beef nachos were different and better than any I've ever had:  cubes of steak on individual fresh, fried tortilla wedges (not generic chips), smothered with melted cheese.  Guac served on the side.

I would not hesitate to come back here.  I'd like to hear the live music, which was not

I like their various versions of enchiladas, the only thing that sucks is that there is ALWAYS a big wait to be seated. We ate for a work function and it took us 45 minutes to get seated even though there was empty tables that we could clearly see from where we were standing that could have been brought together to accommodate us but that didn't happen.
I've also gone when it is just me and another diner and it took a little less time to be seated, around 15 minutes or so but I don't understand how there's empty tables, lots of waitstaff, the hostess is bored and we still aren't seated? Again, the enchiladas are awesome!!!!

Rosario's is a great local taste of Mexican flavor. The atmosphere is inviting and the artwork is definitely fitting for San Antonio!

The food is outstanding, from flautas to fajitas - they have everything a wellrounded Mexican restaraunt should have.

The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because of the price - its a little over priced. I'd say to expect $10-$15 a person. If you're willing to spend the few extra dollars - it's totally worth it!!

I have been there many times and have tried almost everything on their menu and I have yet to be disappointed. So after a friend emailed the recommendation and another person randomly mentioned Rosario's as 'wonderful', I figured it was time for some 'gastro recon'.

After working the conference all day, we trekked from the Marriott, managed to avoid the lure of "Acapulco", and made it to Rosario's. Turns out the timing was just right, as we beat the dinner time rush.

The first dilemma of the meal: what sort of margarita to order! So many choices, so little time! But choice made - and happily so! - I moved on to my main item. The menu isn't really that extensive, but the dishes are quite innovative and not your traditional tex-mex. Luckily I had already checked out the menu before I arrived, so I ordered the Enchilada Suiza - a chicken enchilada with a white wine sauce, a dab of creme fraiche and white cheese.

It wasn't too long before our meals arrived, but my dish wasn't quite what I expected. For one, it was more white 'cream' sauce than white 'wine' sauce. And it was sweeter (surprisingly)! The creaminess was welcome, though. The sweetness was a bit distracting, but not unpleasant. I'm honestly torn as to whether I'd order it again, though. Plus there are so many other things on the menu... Eh, I'd probably order something else just for that fact alone. But I still enjoyed it, and it was definitely different, but in a good way!

Upon leaving, we noticed a whole other room with a small stage, so I assume at certain times/on certain days they have live music. That would have been great to enjoy! But oh well! My belly was full of good food and drink, I had a great time with friends, and my curiosity was getting the better of me: I wanted to know what was going on at Acapulco!

As usual, it would have to wait for another day.

Next stop: Bar-b-cue!!

Rosario's is a great spot to get some authentic Mexican food.  I started off with the Tuna Margarita, which is bright pink and flavored with prickly pear cactus, and it was so good that I had to have another.  The chips and salsa were also great, especially if you like the smoky chipotle style of salsa.  For the entree I had the fish tacos, which were very flavorful.  At first bite I wasn't too impressed, but as I got more into the fish I realized just how good the tacos tasted.  This would be a great spot to eat and drink with a group of friends, and even though it offers a different taste than some of the Tex-Mex places around town, I'd definitely return.

I've eaten so much uninspired, touristy, overpriced, bad Tex-Mex in this city, I've reached a the point where I almost don't try anymore.  As I pessimistically mulled over my dining options, a colleague from the area suggested Rosario's.  "It's where the locals go," he said.  "You can walk from the convention center!"

I will be forever grateful to this man.

Rosario's is now my go-to spot for creative Mexican food (not to mention top-notch people watching).  The prices are inexpensive, the scene is bustling and vibrant, and the food is really just fantastic.  Our server was terrific, steering me toward an excellent margarita choice and keeping us well stocked in warm, flaky chips and spicy, smoky salsa.

The menu is extensive and varied, running the gamut from traditional offerings to twists on typical Mexican fare.  I ended up with the flautas especiales - chipotle-spiked spinach and mushrooms with tender beef inside corn tortillas, flame-grilled and topped with queso fresco and guac..  If I could find this dish at every Mexican restaurant, I would be happy never eating anything else.  Ever again.  Really.  Even the rice and beans were outstanding!  Not to mention my dish was a paltry $10.  Yes, really!

I can't even express how pleasantly surprised I was to eat decent Mexican food just a stone's throw from the Riverwalk.  And how excited I will be to come back!!!

This place gets PACKED on the weekends, so go on an off night.

The enchiladas suizas are pretty sweet (literally), and easily my favorite dish in San Antonio.  I can admit that it's the only thing I've had, because during the handful of times I've gone I can't convince myself to order anything else.  Good service, great location/atmosphere, and great margaritas.

I was never really a fan of this place & always preferred El Mirador down the street. I had a few Hiring Committee lunches here & now I'm more of a fan.  The retro diner look is sorta overdone & the acoustics are horrible in the place - it's very loud & echo-y, but their mole really is delicious.

Arrived in San Antonio late in the evening and asked the bellperson for a local recommendation for dinner nearby. I had high hopes for tasty Mexican food here.

Silly me to arrive here, one single diner, on a Saturday night. The crowd was loud and the music was blaring. The hostess gave me a funny look when I asked for a table for one. Like I shouldn't be allowed to take up space here. An hour later I asked how much longer I would have to wait, trying desperately not to snarl . She was shocked that I hadn't been seated yet. Five minutes later I had a weak limey margarita in hand with some decent salsa and chips.

Ordered the fish tacos. They saved the day. It was now 9:30 p.m. and I'd been sitting in an airport or on a plane all day. I was very hungry and these really hit the spot. They weren't fantastic but they were very good and almost made the wait worthwhile.

I doubt if I'll return in the week I'm staying here to attend a seminar but might be persuaded to try it again in the future.

Still my absolute favorite, hands down, year after year! The food and service never dissapoint! I usually start off with the always fresh ceviche, served with homeade red tortilla chips, it is great paired with a margarita. For my main dish I either indulge in the callejero tacos, or if I am in the mood for something lighter, the fish tacos are great as well. If you are looking for the best in SA, skip the riverwalk & try rosarios.

You'd think in a city with 80% mexican population you would get some good tex-mex. Well maybe somewhere, but not here!

I cannot believe they have won awards for anything and especially the salsa. It's horriffic and I've only had it worse a couple places before. First of all, it's fire roasted and not in a good way. Second, I am willing to endure the heat when the flavor is great. This was spicy and not even worth the nose sniffles.

Both my order and my husbands orders came out wrong and nothing was done to fix it, even when it was pointed out. Also they "ran out of cilantro". Say what? A mexican restaurant ran out of cilantro? That's like a BBQ place running out of brisket! Go freaking buy some more!

We were in town for the RNR marathon and we couldn't run out of this place fast enough! Save your time and go somewhere else.

My trip to Texas was to experience the culture and definitely the food. I read Roasrio's was the hot spot for mexican food so I loaded the family into the rented Church Van and took them over to Rosario's. They were prompt in seating us and accommodating when we asked to be moved away from the kitchen entrance. The waitress was not helpful and looked annoyed taking our order. As a group we decided to have all the same thing: Polla al La Maria. Simple. The meal was ok but I have had better in NYC. The drinks were weak and music volume annoying.   Never will I go to Rosarios or Texas for that matter- but that's a different story.

We were pleasantly surprised by this place. It appeared much smaller from the outside than it is really from the inside.

A good mix of good service, great tequila and margaritas, and good food. Things aren't too expensive. Great first date place if you want to set a casual tone but consistent and good food nevertheless.

Rosario's single-handedly restored my faith in San Antonio as a city. I am SO glad that I ventured down South Alamo to try it - I had pretty much given up on the idea of finding decent Mexican food here, which is ironic since this used to BE Mexico ... every chef at every crappy Mexican restaurant on the Riverwalk should be forced to eat at Rosario's and feel shameful about the slop they are serving to the unwitting tourists.

Yes, I'm bitter. But Rosario's has helped me immensely. I can't say enough good things about it - on the walk back to my hotel, I felt the urge to go up to complete strangers and tell them to eat there. Weird, I know - but I'm passionate about good food. Why eat poorly when you don't have to?

The food, the food - the salsa and chips were already on the table when I was seated. Very fresh and very good - already, things were looking up. I ordered the tacos callejeros with chicken (lightly fried corn tortillas, a layer of refried beans, chicken, lots of lime juice, fresh avocado, some cabbage slaw, queso fresco = YUM). I was tempted by the dessert menu and was glad I went for it - vanilla ice cream rolled in homemade crepes with homemade caramel sauce and candied pecans - fantastic! I was also tempted by the margarita menu (they supposedly have the best in town) but didn't give in, since it was the middle of the day and I had a conference to get back to.

Atmosphere was fine - I went for an early lunch and it was pretty full by the time I left at noon - I imagine that it is quite a scene at night and on weekends.

In a word: GO!

Since Espuma/CasaChiapas was closed, I went here for a quick lunch.  For $7 I got beef fajitas that were fantastic.  It was flavorful, tender, and not overcooked.  I was surprised that it wasn't served on a sizzling hot plate but then thats probably why it wasn't all dried out.  The guac, rice, and beans were average.  Their salsa is roasted with a spicy smoky flavor.  It was very good.

I really wish I'd consulted YELP before we took our weekend getaway trip to San Antone.  I would have dodged all the tourist-trap restaurants on the Riverwalk and dined at places like Rosario's the whole time.  We were referred to this quaint little neighborhood gem by a knowledgeable concierge on our 3rd day in town.  Loved the fish tacos and quacamole!  Great atmosphere and service, too!  None of that corporate commercial crap we had all along the Riverwalk.  How refreshing...

msdisnapipovd shrimp & chicken fajitas for two.

I always take out of town guests to Rosario's and stop by almost every time I'm downtown. When it's busy it gets a bit noisy, so I try to go between lunch and dinner if possible. Friends, family and I have been here at least 20 times combined and never had a bad, or even average experience.

If you're lucky and go when it's busy or with a large party you'll get to sit in what I call "the cock room".. a side room with awesome Mexican paintings of roosters :)

We wanted really good food in San Antonio and used yelp to find the place - sorry guys - this place wasn't as good as you thought it was.  I ordered a combo of beef fajitas and shrimp that was supposed to be marinated in lime and garlic - it wasn't.  The shrimp were tough and chewy.  The fajita meat was good but almost tasted like chinese beef.  The tortillas and guacamole were great.  We ordered a ceviche appetizer that was pretty good but all in all there are better places to eat and I'm kinda dissapointed that we wasted our only dinner in San Antonio here.  Next time, I'll stick to La Margarita, that I know will be good.

Discovered this place while wandering around first fridays, and since then have been back a number of times.  Some of the best mexican food in the city and their fish tacos are to die for, absolutely wonderful.  The atmosphere is fun although it is always VERY VERY loud, especially if you are there on a friday or saturday night when they have live music.  I would definetaly not suggest for a date but instead for a group setting.
Oh and I hear it is the resturant where Martha Stewart recieved the phone call that lead to her inside trading...

Out of town from San Francisco where we get great Mexican food as well and Rosario's was a winner.

I had the enchiladas mole -- delicious mole sauce. I also tried their grilled chicken flautas, which were also excellent.

Best part,  they have a "hand made" (not from mix) Margaretta.

5 stars. Oh yeah. One of the few places I've reviewed that gets top ratings. And with all things good there's always the bad, and it's not the food that's bad. it's the time you'll be investing in a gym membership.

growing up in texas i always felt i was surrounded by texmex food everywhere but there was never a place that really stood out, except taco cabana just because its sweatshop cheap and 24x7. now i've finally found the ferrari of mexican food. its hot, fast, and worth the drive.  i didnt eat everything on the menu but there wasn't anything bad there.  usually some places specialize in certain things and totally suck at everything else but this place was abnormal.  e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g, including the margaritas and live super tejano music was grrr-reat.  If I had to pick something that was truly exceptional i think the salsa was badass. It was so good i'd wear it.  outside.
