I happen to think that Rooster Run is one of the best courses in the Petaluma area. It's much better than Adobe Creek and the pricing is reasonable as well. They recently change the front nine and back nine and that has made the course much easier to score on down the stretch holes.

If you play a right to left ball or a hook you could have some issues because just about every hole has OB left. Check out the map to see what I mean: http://www.coursecam.c...

Also, check out the Hooked on Golf virtual tour at: http://www.hookedongol...

The front nine (which was 10-18) is brutal. The first 4 holes are almost always downwind and fairly easy. But the last 5 holes are extremely long and into the wind. And the wind seems to pickup as the day goes on. Seven, eight and nine are the three hardest holes on the course. All three are directly into the wind and if you hit the greens in regulation then you've accomplished a lot.

The second nine (formerly the front nine) isn't nearly as hard and you can make some good scores down the stretch. They have an island green on the par 3, 15th hole. The island is bigger than you'd think and the hole is only about 130 yards from the blue tees. So just don't get psyched out... you can do it, I believe in you. When you get to the 18th get your head right and get a birdie. It's a short par 5 that will be down wind. Just make sure if you layup that you're in the middle because there is a small creek in front of the green with a narrow opening between some trees. You'll need to split the uprights so to speak. So do the right thing and make sure you layup leaves you at least 120 yards out. Or just strap a pair on and go for it in two and get an eagle...

Rooster Run is a nice track about an hour north of San Francisco in good ole wine country, right off the 101.  I had heard about it from friends and the fact that they host a bunch of NCGA qualifier events, but had never gotten up there until recently.  Playing from the tips, it is a hefty long course of over 7000 yards -- I think holes 2, 9, 10 and 18 are all mid-500 or above (9 is 606, pretty deep) or something crazy like that. To be honest, I felt that playing from these tournament tees actually put many of the fairway bunkers out of reach if you drive around 280, as opposed to playing from the closer championship set -- but you have to be comfortable with being able to stick mid-long irons to have legitimate birdie chances.  Everything but the greens were pretty flat and shots seem to carry/run well as opposed to damp SF courses.  And given the 'barren' nature of the landscape up there, I was surprised at the challenging layout with interesting tree, marsh and bunker placements.  Greens were also very consistent with some wacky breaks, and became extremely fast once the dew dried up.  So be wary.

We got an 8 am Sunday tee time and finished in just over 4 hours... a pretty solid pace the whole way.  The marshals were extremely friendly, although it would have been nice to see the beverage cart sometime before the 17th tee... especially in the summer when its gets in the high-80 temps.  The heat really became pretty severe and uncomfortable on the back 9 for those with carry bags, so just be aware if you want to play during the summer.  The driving range is all grass and buckets are $4 (35) and $8 (70), so this was a huge plus for me.  It was a little weird that the 10th tee was next to the range as opposed to the 1st which is across the street, but apparently this was a recent change for whatever reason.

I would definitely recommend playing here if you are in the area and don't mind the heat, but for $58 and an hour drive, it probably won't make it into my regular rotation.  Roasting into a tomato and having my glove soak through with sweat isn't exactly sexy time.

Another great place to drink and drive.

Booze kills the pain from the winds and the occasional Sonomaroma.

I love rooster run!  The marshal is the nicest guy, they employees are cool, and it is a great course.  Some challenging hazards, so bring extra balls!

It's Sunday, it's nice out, I need a change of scenery for my clubs to bang around on. Lo and behold, Rooster Run squawks it's feathery head. Here's what I dig: after 4 o'clock its $21 bucks to play, and you get a free meal. Go ahead, read it again. You cannot beat this deal with a big tree branch. However, apparently they don't take tee times for singles so it's sort of a crapshoot whether you get on in a timely manner or not (minus one star)...but the folks are friendly, so roll the dice. I did and shot a 90 in mild windy conditions. Happy Sunday, people.
