Wow!! It's true some things the best things are right under your nose. I grew up in Hyde Park and I don't remember frequenting this place. I wish I did. I went here the other day and I got a butter pecan ice cream that tasted really good! They give you so much ice cream though. It was pretty overwhelming.

I also had the opportunity to try their chocolate Oreo frappe and it was really good! Better than JP Licks IMO.

Oh yea, the bowling alley is really small but it's there. So take the kids or go on a date and just bowl for a bit while you are picking up some ice cream.

They also have one arcade game that can be a little fun to play.

Hidden gem yes indeed.

They have the best ice cream around and it is very reasonably priced. It is all homemade and they never cheat you out of the good stuff inside the ice cream. The bowling is always fun and it is VERY reasonably priced. If you want great homemade ice cream and cheap fun go to Ron's!

Oh and his wife Pat does amazing work with cakes!!!

I. luv. this. ice cream. 'nuff said.

I don't need to bowl or play arcade games or anything like that, although those things give the place a fun atmosphere. It definitely has it's regular customers, and the employees are wonderful and friendly. Most of all they have ice cream! Khalua chipp is the best, with big hunks of chocolate, and if you let it thaw a bit you can smell the khalua flavor coming off of it. They have so many flavors and I've tried most of them. I don't think you can lose with these guys. They also have a place in Dedham (but I never been there) and I saw them on Good Morning America or something because they were voted one of the top three or four in the country or something.

This review is for the ice cream only.  It's fantastic!  Price is a little high in my opinion - especially for the neighborhood and for the terrible atmosphere of the place.  It's around the corner from my house - so I go and I'm never disappointed with the ice cream.

If there were a reason to go to Cleary Square, this is it.

My friends and me stumbled upon this place while doing a show at Riverside Theatre and it became a sort of running joke -- as in "hey, let's go to Ron's after rehearsal! That guy smoking outside the door can't be wrong" --but we relented on the impulse one wintry afternoon and acted on it. Three stars because we didn't try the bowling. The ice cream is incredible -- creamy, great flavor, inexpensive!

Again, it's Ron's Gourmet Ice Cream and Candlepin Bowling. Not 20th Century or whatever.

The list regarding the atmosphere:
1. children everywhere
2. delicious ice cream
3. random arcade games shoved in a corner
4. clownish decor + wood paneling
5. stale cigarette smoke engrained in everything
6. old guys in wife beaters on the lanes
7. it's still candlepin bowling + ice cream which is
8. an amazing combination.

Worth the trip to Hyde Park.

Bowling and homemade ice cream; there's not much more you could ask for in the way of family friendly old fashioned good fun. You might have to wait for a lane, as the place isn't real large. The wait would be more pleasurable if the place weren't also home to a keno machine. The ice cream's homemade, and there are other small snacks (candy, lime rickeys, etc) also available. There' s adequate onstreet parking. The bowling is candlepin, just like the maker intended it to be. If the deity had wanted us to bowl 10-pin, we'd have been born with just three fingers. Prices are very reasonable.

20th Century is an establishment dating back before the 1950s.  It was modernized sometime in the 1960s, and is again starting to get upgraded.  It has 10 lanes of Candlepin Bowling on one level.  It has a good sized municipal parking lot across the street from the facility

In more recent years, 20th Century became more known for its ice cream than its bowling.  This is the home of Ron's Gourmet ice cream - which in my opinion is some of the best ice cream I've ever tasted.  But back to bowling...

Aside from the installation of computer scoring few years ago, 20th Century had not received much attention to the bowling alley for years.  In the last few years, they have started to repaint the bowling lane area with some brighter, newer colors, but the lanes are still the same.

This house can play tough at times.

They do not have a game room, or pool tables.

They *DO* have bumper bowling for children.

They do not offer "Glow" or "Cosmic" bowling.

They use computer scoring for the public.

20th Century is "smoke-free"
