Wow, I'm really surprised by some of these reviews. Especially since some of them are from people I not only know, but also trust. My experiences with Rome have been all delivery, and all at work. We've ordered a couple working late/on weekends lunches and dinners from here, and also some food for working lunch meetings with clients.

While I've never had their pizza, I can say that their calzones are good and their salads are excellent.

We've ordered a wide variety of their calzones, as we often share. Their steak tip salad and their marinated grilled chicken salad are great -- fresh veggies, tender juicy meat.

If I had just seen these reviews, I would have stayed far away, but having had the food first, I'll keep going back.

Solid chicken and romaine, but the portion was on the smaller side and the bread's no good.  They also mixed up my drink order and the delivery kid was too lazy to even get out of his car...

I wish I could give other rating symbols in yelp, because Rome Pizza would get thumbs down/other finger I will not say because Yelp HR may get me. Lol.
Anyway, I stepped into Rome and asked for something simple....one slice pepperoni and one slice sausage pizza. I got a nasty reaction from the old man behind the counter saying "we don't make that" (?), "we only do cheese or pepperoni". As I was there I thought "what the heck, I want pizza", ordered two slices pepperoni then walked out because I was not going to give that place my money... so I went to Emilio's instead.

If it were possible to give 0 stars or negative stars, this is the place that I would give it to. Not only is the food mediocre, the service is belligerent and completely inhospitable. The pizza, after which the place is named after, is subpar to many others in found in Boston. The wings were dry and completely wooden.

If you have options to hit up another pizza place, I would suggest another vendor. These guys will not only be completely inflexible but also serve you disgusting food. And if you try to talk to them, they will curse and yell at you and most likely spit in your food.

    AVOID IF POSSIBLE.

My coworkers, the creatures of habit they are, insist on ordering from Rome when we work Saturdays.  Unfortunately, I've never liked the food from Rome.  I think the inherent problem is freshness of ingredients, or a severe lack thereof.  The chicken in the wraps and salads is so dry and stale, you'd think it was cooked, reheated and sat for hours under a heating lamp. The vegetables are a disaster, dry and wilted.  And I'm certain the stale breads are beyond the expiration date.  But to be honest, I've never been quite motivated enough to write a (two star) review.  Until today.

Today we waited TWO HOURS for our lunch to arrive (order placed at 11:20, we were quoted 40 minutes until arrival, it arrived just after 1:00).  We called around 12:30 and inquired about the delay, asking if the driver had gotten lost.  The reply, "Our drivers don't get lost."  I guess they need another excuse to explain why it takes 2 hours to make a dozen sandwiches and drive them 6 blocks.

Regardless, the food arrived and I dug into my California wrap (chicken, bacon & avocado w/veggies).  I took a bite of the lettuce on the top of my wrap; it was so rotten I actually spit it out.  I pulled the lettuce out of the wrap and got about three bites into it before I clamped down on a marble sized lump of gristle.  So I unwrapped the sandwich, and the bacon sitting on top looked so unappetizing I had to throw the sandwich away.  I NEVER throw food away.

I was prepared to make a stand the next time the office tries to order from Rome, but my admin just sent an email to the office saying, "I think this is the fall of Rome."  I couldn't agree more.

So I ordered two pizzas from this place, a shrimp alfredo and a plain cheese pizza. I was told 20mins to 45mins for delivery. I called at an hour into our order and was told in 1min our pizza would be there. It came in 15mins. When it did arrive it was luke warm and the wrong pizza. I called the pizza joint and they said it was my mistake and I ordered a chicken pizza instead of a shrimp. The guy was rude and told me basically to go screw myself. The last time I checked it was in the business interest to assume the customer is always right. In this case the pizza restaurant did not care for my business and so I will take my business elsewhere. The pizza by-the-way was horrible.

The pizza's not spectacular, but as far as most Boston pizzerias go it's pretty good. Although it's called Rome pizza, the style is closer to the Greek-style you often find in Boston. Buffalo wings are better than average and they give you plenty of tasty blue cheese dressing with it. Rome is no Santarpio's, Pinnochio's, Regina's or Pino's, or even DaCoopa's, but, besides those, Boston doesn't have a ton of really good pizzerias and this place is better than average.

If you go by around the time school lets out you can catch a glimpse of some kids walking back from the school bus stop who think they're gangsters, pretending like they're shooting guns, even though they live in the South End of Boston in 2009 (South End used to be rough, but those days are loooong gone) and have probably never even seen a gun in real life that wasn't on a cop's hip. Amusing in its own fucked-up way.

A review is never harder when there's nothing that stands out about a place. That applies to this pizzeria.

The food, decorum, prices, wait, none are great nor are they terrible. Yet calling the place mediocre feels like an undeserved insult. To be fair, it is kind of a hole in the wall with limited seating, but that's not a terrible thing. It seems a little run down but it's certainly not dirty. I wouldn't call the service friendly but it's certainly not rude. I'm not sure just what to say about this place.

I'll have to use my meal as parallel. I had a Cesar wrap. Took seven, maybe ten minutes. Cost about seven dollars. Wasn't too damp or too dry, not even terribly messy. It was very clean, well cooked. Good but not great. I'd call it reasonably okay. That's how I'd sum up this place actually. Reasonably okay.

I avoid Rome whenever possible, but sometimes, it's just too convenient to skip. When walking and I have the time, I go the extra block or two to its competition down the street. When ordering delivery, I have far to many options to let this menu crowd my drawer.

Maybe the other reviewers are right, and the sandwiches are better than the pizza. I certainly hope so. The crust is akin to cardboard and pie as a whole only okay only when fresh out of the oven.

Couple mediocre at best food with the following experience, and maybe you'll understand my distaste for Rome a little more.

On one visit, I was in the midst of many errands, frazzled, hungry and in a rush. I stopped in for sustenance and decided on one of the pasta options amongst a few I was considering. When payment was requested, I was confused by the total because I forgot what I had decided. After the fog (in my head) cleared, I laughed and turned over payment in full, needing only some change back. This was never offered. Now, it's only a few cents, which I usually leave in the tip jar. But the fact that this person, behind the counter - not a delivery person - did not give me my change left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Rome is just rock solid.  There are few pizza places like this that I would feel comfortable trying any thing on the menu.  At Rome I have no problem going in, sticking my arm out, spinning three times and ordering whatever I end up pointing at (well ne problem aside from them kicking me out of the store).  They do it all and they do it well.  I'm not joking when I say that you should go in and try things.  This humble show will surprise you with what they offer and the quality product they deliver.
The straight-If you like what the item on the menu says you will like what you get.
What's good-Man their steak tip sub rocks.  Good options for pizza and some of the better slices around.
The slap-I don't know what it is about pizza places in the south end it just doesn't sit well with me.

I thought I'd give Rome a second chance, considering I was ready for a relaxing, lazy evening.  They got here much quicker this time, but the guy seemed to be in a hurry because he called me to come down when he hadn't even gotten to my place yet.   Yet they were here within 20 or so minutes of ordering.

I went with calzone and buffalo fries.  The calzone was okay, nothing spectacular, though filling.  As for the buffalo fries, it wasn't worth it.  The flavor wasn't there, they were simply your standard take-out french fries (soggy and mushy) with a small whiff of buffalo spice.

Still not that great of a lazy option, particularly considering the average calzone and sub-average buffalo fries.

In complete desperation by the inability to find a place that delivers wings in the Back Bay, I Yelped upon Rome. Typically, I will not trust the wings from a pizza first shop, but because Rome is clearly a pizza plus everything else fast in the world, I was willing to give it a shot.

Glad I did, as I got 25 solid B+ grade wings delivered in under 40 mins. They definitely arent out of this world, but they are better than average, and I managed to successfully gorge myself into an uncomfortable state of wingded fullitude.

In addition to pizza and wings, there was pasta, salads and about 60 types of sandwhices on the menu, along with a healthy assortment of side dishes. And by healthy, I mean artery stuffing cholesterol bombs. Perfect for a hungover Sunday.

Despite being named "Rome", the delivery guy and and the dude that took my order had the tell tale signs of being Helenic rather than Italian. "Athens Pizza" or possible the ever popular "Olympic Pizza" may be closer to the truth.
Negatives: a bit under cooked (i threw them under theboiler for a spell), no carrots or celery, runny sauce that needed more heat

Positives: quick, cheap (16 bucks for 25 wings), friendly delivery guy and really good blue cheese.

I've frequented Rome many times since its within walking distance.  Usually its standard fare, pizza, wings, or some variation.  The prices are reasonable, the staff always ask me how I've been and the place is clean.

The pizza is definately a good bargin.  I think it could be cooked a bit longer--its great the next day after being warmed in an oven, but thats personal preference.

While there's nothing stellar that makes this place stand out, there's nothing to make me say avoid it either.

Well I thought we ordered from this place...
We had a 15 minute window until they closed so were excited to get some food. I got a confirmation email and even a receipt page with expected delivery time.
15 minutes later I received a phone call but did not answer because I did not recognize the number (and it was not included in an of the info from my order).
Googled, called..(the guy had not even left a voicemail)..."sorry we are closing so I had to cancel your order".  I started to ask him to explain and he just hung up.

If you want to succeed in any business, customer service is the key. My experience with this place is that they just really truly don't care.  I'd rather not eat than eat from a "don't give a crap" place like this.  Reading the other the reviews it seems like we got lucky.

Maybe I'm just not a discriminating enough pizzeria connoisseur, but I thought that the pizza here, especially for the price (buck fifty for a cheese slice), was excellent. Greasy, cheesy, and damn near perfect when you shake tons of garlic over it. The guys here are very nice to their regulars (I work just across the street so I'm here once or twice a week to treat myself to a cheap but tasty lunch). Also, their tiramisu is rich, exceedingly creamy, and delicious. I've sampled a few of their other foods - the veggie rollup and the fries - and they weren't quite as good as the pizza, but when I can have a full and satisfying lunch for $3 I'm going to be damn happy with that pizza.

MmmMMMMmmm Rome Pizza, I am so glad i found you!  i first was really into Emilio's pizza cuz i dug their crust. but then one day in our mailbox, we found a menu from these guys.  so on one friday evening after happy hour, i made my bf walk with me here to try their pizza. they say they are the best pizza in the south end and home of the orignal chicken tenders and wings.  who could argue that?
we ordered our pizza- sausage, green peppers, and feta cheese ( my fave). waited like 10-15 minutes then it was done. it was soooo gooood.  i am sold!
rewind to this past weekend. too lazy and too tired to cook, we decided to order pizza but also wings. and the great thing about this is they have online ordering so you dont need to call and you can add instuctions on how you like it. i placed my order and there was a note that said delivery averages 30 mins.  maybe it was a slow nite or what, but we got our order within 20-25 minutes. it was great! the pizza and wings tasted like they had just come out of the oven.  the wings were soooo good and they even made them a little crispy like i had ask.
    overall, this place is delicious.!!!

Rome's pizza is good.  And the price is the best in the area (2 cheese pizzas for $13).  But Emilio's down the street is better, with slightly better atmosphere.  If you're looking for the cheapest decent pizza, Romes' your place.

While Rome is terribly convenient, it wasn't exactly the best pizza.  Still, it's pizza - it's all good.  They have a cheap deal for two cheese pizzas for $18, so when I was in a hurry to pick up something for a day of football watching with the boys, it was a quick solution.  Besides, they're boys - they'll eat anything.  Still, it's not the first option to get my pizza on in the neighborhood.

Okay, so I may be biased in my rating, being a regular there, but that said, if you are looking for a place to be a regular, this is a good bet.
The guys (and lady!) are nice people. During lunch and dinner rush times they are all business, which I appreciate. I don't want to wait while some dude chit-chats while I stand behind him starving my pants off and tired from work. I recommend going at 2pm for a late lunch and you will likely get your food in 5 minutes max, maybe a friendly conversation too if you like. If not, grab a weekly dig (by the door) and sit and read for a bit.
Pizza is what you'd expect - nothing spectacular, but better than average. They're real Italians, come on.
Yes, the crunchy chicken wrap is so good, like a chicken caesar but better, hard to explain just try it.
Other staples: Meatball sub, chicken parm sub, steak and cheese with extra cheese sub.
The trash is almost always overflowing in there (there's only one barrel and they get a lot of business), so be sure to crunch down your trash before you toss it. I like how they play Magic 106.7 on the radio and sing, hum or whistle along.

I order from Rome a lot at work because they are on Seamless Web which is the online ordering vendor at my firm.  Unlike a lot of places, Rome has a reasonable $10 minimum order for delivery.  They are also one of the few restaurants that will call you if they don't have something you ordered rather than just showing up without it.  Also they are FAST.  I recommend the greek wrap, greek salad, veggie melt wrap, or marinated chicken salad.  They also have yummy hazelnut gelato and mozzarella sticks. The greek and balsamic dressings are great.  Don't order the gyro though, it sucks big time--dry, overcooked, bland.  Also, I ordered pesto pasta once and got alfredo sauce with pesto drizzled on top-- not sure if it was a fluke, but I didn't like it.

Horrible - The people who think this is good or even medicore pizza should have their heads examined.  I'm convinced you have to go to Federal Hill in Providence to get decent slice of Za.  Unforuntely I don't think they're ever going to deliver to downtown Boston.  Can somone please tell me where you can get a good NYC style pizza delivered in this town. I've tried just about everwhere including the North End within the past 10 years but continue to fail in my quest.
