I like this place. At first I thought they went wrong with the remodel a while back (they took out the big booths) but then I realized that they were able to fit WAY more tables in this way- which is good because it's always crowded and I hate waiting for my food. In fact, every time I've been here I've had to wait at least fifteen minutes for a table.
The bread is always warm and delicious. I really like that it's not pre-cut... so you get that whole "breaking bread" experience with your party. I also love that they have the option to create your own pasta dishes. I've done this on a few occasions and must say, my dishes are always totally fabulous!
The last time I was here B and I shared the cheesecake and it was creamy wonderfullness. Yes, it was so good I had to create a new word just to describe it....
As far as neighborhood chains go Macaroni Grill isn't a bad place. Imagine a classy and Italian themed Applebees with a more stylish bar, not a scrap of sports or Hollywood memorabilia to be found and a menu devoid of blooming onions and you're there!
Located in the McCarthy Ranch Shopping Center, parking is often a challenge but, the food is decent --- I highly recommend the seafood linguine --- the service is alright and the ambiance is nice. Macaroni Grill offers a kids' menu with a lot of bang for the buck. All meals on this menu include drinks (with refills) and dessert. My kids polished off everything on their plates too!
One amusing point of the place is the Italian language lessons broadcast in the restrooms. They might make you hang around to learn enough of the language to impress your date!
I have a confession, I like the Macaroni Grill. It's a chain, and it's not for gentlemen of distinguished taste. Good thing is, I've dropped all pretense of being a gentleman a lot time ago.
A full 8 years ago when I went to my first job interview as a wide-eyed doctoral candidate, my soon-to-be boss took me to the Macaroni Grill for pasta. I hadn't had any food all day that day - I was giving a presentation during lunch while all future colleagues ate their sandwich and dozed off.
That was August 2001, in Northridge, California.
The moral of the story is that I first walked into the Macaroni Grill hungry, so my review is probably biased. Over the years I've visited the restaurant at least a dozen times, mostly with my coworkers. I fell in love with the relatively obscure portobello chicken, the eggplants parmigiona and last but definitely not the least, the free bread.
I also like the hundreds of wine bottles on the wall. You feel the perverted pleasure of dining in a cellar. You also wonder if the bottles are full. Of course it has to be a trick to remind you that some red wine is mandatory to complete an Italian meal. Fair capitalism, I say.
Ate here for a friend's birthday today, and so far, it's a four-star in my book!
Loved the setting. Everything's nicely arranged; everyone's nicely dressed. Tables were nicely set but were sad they took away our champagne glasses because we were under-aged, hahaha jk
Us being able to draw on the paper-laden tables was a plus! While waiting on the waiter, we'd spend those minutes doodling and scribbling away with the given crayons. I drew a Pikachu, hah. It's great for little kids.
I ordered a Peach Iced Tea, Fettucine Alfredo (pretty much the only thing I order from an Italian menu), and Chicken Toscana soup. All were delish!!! I greatly enjoyed my meal. My friends also enjoyed their meals (I only recall a Mushroom Ravioli).
I knocked a star off for the slow service. We waited foreverrrrrr for the guy to serve us and to get our check ready.
Let's hope the next visit will be just as (or more) pleasant.
Terrible service, long wait for a party of 5 at lunch. Hello??? Not every group that walks in is a party of 2 or 4! Then more waiting once we were seated. After our order was placed, they promptly brought out 2 of our dishes...finally a good thing. But they didn't bring out the rest of the orders until we were completely done with the first 2...really bad thing. To top it off, they brought out the bill and had charged my cc with someone else's bill. This place needs a huge overall from food to service.
Not a bad place to eat but it is not that great either. This restaurant offers your typical Americanized Italian food.
I was pretty disappointed with their Pasta Milano. The creamy sauce tasted like something I can create from my own kitchen. (and I am really not a good cook) The scallops & spinach Salad was a failure. The scallops are overcooked and too salty. They relied too heavily on the dried bacon for the flavor. That totally destroyed the taste of the salad dressing.
I ate a chicken dish and became very ill for 2 days aftewards after eating here.
The meal must have been undercooked or contaminated. I never had food poisoning before or after.
Thank you for the gift cards, me appreciate it so much...
Now, onto my review. Did you know about the 2 bite/2 minute rule they have for giving you a check. Its a way to turn over tables faster but, its pathetic because there wasn't a line out the door and I was eating in the bar.
Let's see, I wanted to sit down and eat not be shoved out the door like the other Cisco minons. I wasn't alone there was a man there enjoying a glass of wine reading a book hence he wasn't going to be a 20 minute table. As I tried not to people watch ( does anyone have a cure for this habit? ) I found the 4 Cisco women at the bar with one glass of wine all dressed in their DressBarn suits and eating salads rather funny because if they didn't work together they would have nothing to do with each other or the nice bartender.
I asked for a salad which was nice but, I like salad you know tomatoes, carrots not water lettuce and croutons, for $8 I should get some other variety of vegatables.
So I ordered the seafood penne dish, it was hot it had two shrimp to go with the forty pcs of chicken and the sauce was good, but at $13 a bit much and then of course...
Miles brings me the check, um, do you know what service is? What about a cup of coffee or dessert ? Maybe its this whole healthcare debate but I like me some dessert and a cup of coffee ( yeah mental health issue ). So I order the mixed berry and its strawberry and pudding-vanilla pudding.
If I could afford to make this whole meal in my car I'd get a restaurant license and do deliveries ( maybe a new business model in the making ) and I wouldn't insist people leave after 2 bites of their meal or 2 minutes after they finished eating...
My $30 bill did not meet expectations and I am really going to have to rework on the whole gift card thing because the look alone I got was priceless!
The first time here was a major bust. My dish was plain and bland and I chose to not remember what is was called.
Sticking with my Fettuccini Alfredo from now on. Sometimes.
I would not want to suggest coming here. There are bigger and better places people!
Came around 4:30 this afternoon. . Tomatoe soup and chicken Marsala. Great service; quick refills on drinks and bread. The food is sooooooo good!!!
Mom and I went here since we were in the area. (Note: if we're not in the area, something else is better closer) Mom likes the Salmon with orzo, and she says it wonderful when its on, but this time the orzo was super spicy...too many red pepper flakes?? My 'make your own' was good except they narrowed down the choices on paper but when you ask if you have them, they still do. So why narrow it down!?!? Lastly, the biggest disappointment they got rid of their signature and super scrumptious "Dessert Ravioli" Like a snickers inside a fried pastry crust with vanilla ice cream...amazing. They crossed it out due to the 'peanut' scare. Well, use a different nut! and, wait...I know I saw a spinach salad on the menu! booo! no reason to go back now!
Anti-social waitress who didn't bring our drinks together (it was just me and my hubby) - got the wrong drink, stuffed mushrooms were uncooked, entrees were a good size but not tasteful at all. hells I can make better pasta than them **at least I got flavor**
When we told the waitress about the stuffed mushrooms, she didn't seem to care replying "I'll tell the cook". Manager came out to bring the bill and was just as unfriendly and anti social as our waitress. Bottom line: Not very good service, not very good food.. def. not a very good place to go back to!
Food is always cooked as I love it, they have the best coffee to go with their desserts (their Tiramasu is my ultimate favorite!); their staff has always been friendly, and quick in delivering food...
It's a great place to have dinner with friends, or the whole family.
I'd gone here with my entire family one day (15 of us that day I think?), anyway, they gave all around great service, got all the dishes right, cooked perfectly, not a complaint from any of us.
Oh man, ate here many times. Usually created my own plate but this time(a few days ago) I had to order a low carb item(simple salmon) due to my diet. The plate was pretty good. The calamari is good but I think they're stingy on the amount they give. The new tomato appetizer that they have sucks ass.
Like I said, I ate here many times and enjoyed it but this time was just a bad case as the waiter was too chill with us also. I think his service was too casual and he brought our entrees out while we were still trying to finish our appetizer... Makes me feel rushed if ya know what I'm saying? =/
I had better times.... =(
I have not been to Macaroni Grill for ages. The last time I was there was for a Bday but I think they since has remodel or changed the place a little.
Today I went for a work Bday and they just changed there menu. They have some new items and it seems the food is lighter than before. There lunch is not bad. Two items for $8.99 and three items for $9.99. They got great fresh bread. I can eat the whole loaf myself. I end up ordering the Blue Cheese salad and 1/2 of the Chicken and Artichoke Sammie. The salad was good and perfect amount of blue cheese cuz that stuff can be totally overpowering. The Sammie can be better. I found it on the dry side.
Overall lunch was great and to celebrate a Bday is great too.
not bad, not bad! i've been coming to this place for a long time, and i always leave a happy camper. first of all, their bread is amazing (i usually eat a whole square to myself). i like to start off with a blackberry mint iced tea. if i feel like going healthy, then i might get the mozzarella alla caprese. if i feel like being a lard ass, then i'd start with the mozzarella fritta (the pesto is such a nice touch!), then get the eggplant parmesan. they used to slice the eggplant real thin so it was really crispy, but they recently changed the recipe and cut it a bit thicker. it's not as good as before, but still not bad.
once again one of my favorite desserts has been axed! they used to have this cappuccino cheesecake with a chocolate ganache sauce that was to die for. i don't even like cheesecake, but the one they had here was freakin awesome. alas, it is no more. r.i.p. my friend.
We came here during weekdays. We ordered the Pollo Caprese and Chicken Marsala. Both are really tasty. I liked the chicken marsala because the chicken was done perfectly, not too hard and dry like some other places. The sauce was very good. The server/waiter was really friendly. I liked the interior looks of the restaurant, very calming. Too bad I didn't have enough space in my stomach or I would try their dessert.
Okayyy so first of all, it's not all cheese in this place though it just says "Macaroni" Grill. I loved it here for a first time. The menu was just luxurious. Like every other restaurant, they have appetizers to start off with which include a little bit of like stuffed mushrooms, artichoke cakes, shrimp dip etc. To start the night off, the bread was really crunchy and just perfect.
For a main dish, I ordered Pasta Milano, which consisted of just grilled chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, and some mushroom in creamy garlic sauce. So, as a person that's not a big fan of cheese, this was pretty darn good! This was only about $12.49 a dish and I believe that two people could have eaten this, because I never finished it.
So tonight our group ordered a variety of selections. There was the Seafood Linguine, which was just like noodles with shrimp, tomatoes, linguine in white wine, and I think olive oil sauce. Layers of Lasagna for my friend Alex was pretty good considering that there was Italian sausage, pepperoni covered with fresh tomato sauce. And my my, the Honey Balsamic Chicken plate sure looked filling. It was only about 14 dollars and I'd say it'd be really worth it to share with at least 2-3 people. The plate came out looking really delicious! The Pollo Limone Rustica was appetizing as well with the whole penne sauce and oh, the best part which were the roasted red peppers.
SO etc, etc, etc.
The drinks were delightful as well. I had the Raspberry iced tea. But it's cool, it tasted just as good. I really liked the Peachy Iced tea? Out of the group of 10 tonight, everyone said the Pomegranate soda tasted the best out of all the lemonades and other teas.
DESSERTS: They ordered some cheesecake thing that I did not touch, but the strawberry slices were fresh and sweet. I loved the Smothered Chocolate Cake! Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate heaven. 5 stars already for the decors and designs and all those attention-grabbin' dishes.
p.s. salad was only 2 dollars a plate, and it tasted good over the top.
THIS.
definitely is a
MUST-GO.
I have ups n downs in this restaurant but food generally is good.
Bread is a big improvement since last I went (probably 5 to 7 years ago)
Service gets slow sometimes but if u spoke to manager, things get better.
We've eaten here four times in the last year. Prior to today, the place was okay. We noticed the menu changed and wondered if there was also a change in recipe preparation. The tomato bruschetta appetizer has a new presentation - you get a plate of toast, a side of sliced cheese, and a bowl of tomatoes - make your own. Weird presentation, but tasty
Then the main courses arrive - the steak was over done, chewy and totally inedible......I ordered the mama's trio - the chicken cannelloni was the best of the three, the lasagna was spongy, and the chicken parmigiana did not taste like chicken at all - some sort of ground up chicken nugget.
The bread they bring to the table at the beginning is still good, free refills for soda and iced tea are nice, service is a bit slow, but mostly the food was just nasty
I've known Macaroni Grill for many years, but go there maybe only once or twice a year.
It's ok food, nothing to write home about. Everytime I go there, it's to meet up with friends because they have a large dining area and a lot of large round tables, good for family style get togethers. It's also a good place for parents with children since they give out crayons to draw, keeping the kiddies occupied.
You can always expect to start off with some nice warm bread with olive oil. Most of the appetizers and pasta I've tried are decent. It's nice that they let you create your own pasta combination, so again, this is a good place for get togethers and everyone get to order what they want.
With that said, I wouldn't really want to go there on a date, it can be noisy.
They have a wide selection of kids' menu, and yes the desserts are pretty good. Price is not bad, pasta meals are $11-$14, it goes hand in hand with what you pay for.
Came here yesterday with a business client to discuss money and how business is going. Was not looking forward to this discussion with him but food always seems to make it easier and when you are not paying, people seem to be nicer ;)
We got here about noon time and were seated right away. We made our food selection and waited quite a while for a waitress to come take our order. I read a few of my friends' reviews before hand so I could try something new that they suggested. I ordered the blackberry mint tea as suggested and it was really tasty! It had a tiny bit of an aftertaste but I was thirsty and didn't care ;) The waitress was nice enough to give me a refill on it halfway through our meal.
I ordered the Carmela's chicken rigatoni as my friend Linda L. reviewed about. It was good but like she mentioned it was one of those times where there just wasn't enough sauce for me. The chicken was good and I liked the mushrooms in it. My boss and client both had the halibut which they really liked. It was fresh and tasted good.
We skipped on dessert although it looked awesome! Between the bread and olive oil, salad and lunch I was stuffed-ed (yes I said stuffed-ed!)
I enjoyed my time. Food is always decent here although not fabulous. I will try something new next time!
And yes...I survived the lunch meeting with this client! See....food always makes business talks MUCH better ;)
I like to try new things, however this restaurant has a dish I just can't seem to stray from. Its the grilled halibut and parmesan risotto. I get it every time, even though some of the other dishes look and sound good.
For a chain restaurant this place is good. I have to recommend for decent prices and hot bread with dipping oil. I come here if I want to have something that I know will not disappoint.
I have had a few meals here now. This is a cute little mega chain. I love that the waiter/waitress writes their name upside down for you and then leaves you the crayons to play with.
The meal starts out with a yummy rosemary bread and oil with pepper and balsamic vinaigrette (which you need to ask for). Your waiter will also offer you what seems like a jug of wine which you can self serve "on the honor system" LOL.
Now for the appetizers I enjoyed the Calamari, Shrimp Artichoke Dip and the Cesar Salad. For entrees I love the "create your own" where they give you a slip of paper and you decide what you want (sauce, pasta, toppings, etc.) If you are not into creating your own I would recommend the Pasta Milano or Mushroom Raviolis. Now for dessert you must try the 3 Berry Tiramisu. DELICIOUS!
All in all it is a good pasta place but I echo what other folks have said that it may not be worth the price tag if you are not craving pasta.
One of my favorite Italian places to dine at in the bay area. Thier chicken scallopini is to die for. As well as thier blackberry mint ice tea.
Their mashed potatoes are delicious
I've been avoiding Macaroni grill for awhile now as the food hasn't been good. Finally returned last week to be pleasantly surprised! Their menus now include a nutritional guide complete with fat, calorie and carb amounts. How awesome is that? We all tried their new menu items as well. We split the Scallops & Spinach Salad - spicy and light! I had the Shrimp Portofino - very tasty and creamy without the heaviness. Great for a summer day! Service was good and the ambiance remains cute and romantic.
This restaurant is reliable. You know what you are getting walking through the door. Okay Italian food. It is what you would expect from a chain restaurant. The place is clean, the prices are decent and the service is good. There is nothing spectacular about the restaurant but like I said, if you want something reliable, you can always count on Macaroni Grill.
As always, we enjoy coloring on the tablecloth.
I really like the food here. The waiters we have had recently have been great (though last night my wife was upset about a guy delivering someone's dinner while clearing a booger).
The bread this last time was WAY too salty though. Careful of the pepper grinder - some bits are large.
All in all, a great place for price and quality balance.
This place makes you feel absoultely bloated when you are done. It's good but way too heavy. I say order an appetizer or share an entree with someone else.
Now the leaning bellini? I could have drank those all day long. It's limoncello, raspberry liquer, orange juice, champagne and contreau or something like that blended. It was so good. My bestie Heidi had the sangria and she just kept drinking.
And can someone tell me why it's so fuckin cold in here? I had to put on a jacket as did my bag-a-bones bestie lol
Love the place but the location... not so much.
Mipitas has always been my least favorite city because of the smell of Alviso... yeah. So that's why I took one star off I love the place though.
SO! no waiting wooh! that makes me a happy girl.
The tables I love them, you can draw on them!
Crayons white canvas....my imagination :D I start doodling haha.
The food....I really do enjoy the portions and the service.
I feel the food could have more flavor to it but the prices were high but reasonable I love the aroma in the air
Oh and the bread with the oil and vinegar yum!!!! :) :) :)
The desserts are too die for by the way yes!
Not too many options for desserts but they are so rich and delicious.
So there you have it... Pretty good Definitely coming back!
If you haven't been there and are want some yummy food, cool environment try it out! take your friends!!! lol :]
I tend to be very critical at Italian restaurants, (it's hard to taste anything superb when it's all tomato and cheese) but I really loved it here.
First sign:
I dreamt about the bread the night I was brought here for the first time.
The most aromatic, soft, real-hot-off-the-oven bread I've ever had at an Italian restaurant.
Why?
The bakers are constantly popping the homemade bread in and out of the ancient style stone-oven. I LOVE the idea of the open-kitchen. You can see every move the chefs make, and it's just so amazing how quickly they move!
Second sign:
I got to taste the lasagna, shrimp scampi and the salmon dish and much more.. we had a big group (more picky people to please) but everything was perfect, I made sure it was the consensus =)
Third sign:
Our waiter was so gorgeous. Not his appearance per say, but the way he presented the items on the menu and brought us our dishes. He was organized, friendly and oh so professional with the towel over his arm and all!
*Next time, I would want to come here with my bf - it was such a beautiful and romantic place.
At dinnertime, they turn out all the lights so a single candle is your entire light source.
I like it.
People can't tell how big of a mess I am.
and it does indeed makes me feel pretty.
The portions just got smaller, so be warned. However, the food is tastier and the help aims to please. Also, they take reservations, which are suggested on weekend evenings.
They are very good at splitting dishes... if you ask the waiter, they'll divide up a bowl of soup, the Tour of Italy, etc. By doing this, my friend and I were full, and had room to split a dessert, and saved about $20...
So I decided on saving some money and instead of flying to Italy for lunch I left my passport at home and went to Romano's Macaroni Grill instead.
I knew I wouldn't be getting a truly authentic meal but it was sure to be an Italian inspired dish with lots of tomato, olive oil and more importantly Pasta. The entire experience was wonderful and we owe that all to le nostre Cameriera Juli (Our Waitress Juli). She was the best, She was very attentive and her suggestions were great.
I started off with:
~ Crab Stuffed Mushrooms- The mushrooms were a bit raw in the middle while the exterior was warm and fully cooked. The crab seasoned with Italian seasoning and was very fresh.
~Vodka Rustica - Penne Pasta with Grilled Chicken in a Tomato, Cream and Vodka Sauce plus smoked Prosciutto, The Tomato was not too overpowering and the prosciutto with the cream sauce was an amazing flavor combination.
~ Pasta Milano- Bow Tie pasta with Grilled Chicken, Sun-dried Tomatoes, Mushrooms in a Garlic Cream Sauce. Again, the tomatoes did not overpower this dish and mushroom gave it a little more rustic taste.
And I can't forget the bread, fresh baked with Italian herbs and served with premium extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Yummy.
Overall, the atmosphere was great, food was delicious and the service was the best.

This place always seems to underwhelm me. I used to work by a Macaroni Grill so I would have it occasionally. I never understood why there were always huge crowds out front because the food just was never that good. And now I work by this location.
My co-workers and I came here for lunch recently. Their menu seemed to have changed a bit since the last time I had been there so I was able to find a couple of things that looked interesting. My group placed the order and our waitress vanished. A short while later our food came out. Well, all except mine. After realizing that they were not about to bring my food anytime soon, it took about 5 minutes of trying to flag down a waiter. They were apologetic about my food but basically it had to be made from scratch as they had forgotten to submit it. So while my table enjoyed their food, I waited. Just when everyone had about finished, mine showed up. At this point we were all ready to go, gathered the check (which didn't have my item listed on it, the one highlight), and that was about it. For not getting your food with the rest of your table you'd think there'd be a little more than just, 'here, your one meal is free!'. I don't expect everyone else's meal to be comp'd, but something, anything offered, would have been nice.
So that's probably my last experience with the Macaroni Grill. The food isn't horrible but with so many other options out there, I'd rather go to another Italian restaurant instead.
I've had good experiences here, however I feel like their food isn't that great. Their service makes up for it when I'm here...and I'm pretty amused that the servers can write their names upside down with crayons, and leave said crayons for you to write on your paper table cloth while you're waiting for your meal.
I also appreciate the olive oil dipping sauce which is really just EVO with fresh ground salt and pepper...but it's yummy with their bread. Their regular entrees are alright, I liked the risotto but when I looked up the caloric content online, I wanted to die, probably because with that amount of calories and saturated fat, I was well on my way.
They have a "light" menu too. It's kind of tasteless, but if you don't want to ingest copious amounts of butter and cream, it's best to go this route. It's rather healthy albeit plain, but if that's the route you're going for, it's nothing to complain about.
Not a fan of Macaroni Grill. A long time ago I came here and found a piece of hair in my food. This time I ordered their new dish of scallops and spinach salad. It was ok. Eh. I wouldnt come back if it wasn't because of a friend's birthday.
It's OK at best and slides more often than not to the unacceptable side.
Always very crowded and chaotic - finding seating is always an adventure - especially at lunchtime. Unfortunately, our company ends up taking all our customers here (I think they just like to feed the customers so much that they get stuffed and shut up LOL)
As Fraulein mentions - the food is salty - especially for me since I eat very little sodium. It tastes like everything is cooked in saltwater.
The table wine is a Chianti (original) that's modest - winelist is YAWWWNN.
Service is hit or miss. I've had fantastic service here and avergae service (though that has coincided with crowded times so I can't blame the wait staff entirely)
If you want to have a conversation, forget this place - it's too noisy at lunch. Dinner can be a better experience.
The saving grace - and the reason this place gets 2 stars from me... THE BREAD!!!! Ahhhh, sinfully good bread.
The Make your Own Pasta option could be a good way to size up a first date for creativity and ability to think outside the pasta bowl :-)
You'll have a good time, you'll probably take home some food for the dog. If you suffer from high blood pressure, stay the heck way from here! Consider yourself warned!
#2
I had to get my car serviced today, because that light was on... and that light annoys me all the time. So when they told me it was to be two hours... I had to call for some reinforcement.
Originally, out for a steak (Outback was closed), we had to settle on Macaroni Grill.
I had their new pasta which was immediately forgettable. The sauce had no consistency... it had a basil lime sauce and chicken and penne. It seemed zesty on the menu, but didn't attempt to look like anything it should have when it came out. The waitress "even said nothing looks like the picture."
Then, why lie to me? Or tease even...
Had a huge slice of cake, which wasn't better either. The only thing I have had good here is probably their healthy salmon dish. But that you can make anywhere.
In the end, I would tell McCarthy Ranch - that this is proof they need some better restaurants... because Black Angus, On The Border, Applebee's, Banana Leaf and Macaroni Grill... do not cut it.
Welcome to the chain restaurant of americanized Italian food. It's weird when I lived back in Germany I didn't know about the existence of chain restaurants like McDonalds.
Anyways the food is just average "wanna be" Italian food like Olive Garden but if you are in a hurry and don't wanna go too fancy this is a good family restaurant or a place you hang around with your friends for low key dinner/lunch.
The service ... just about average. The waitress was attentive as much as possible serving all the tables.
BUT the manager (or that wanna be guy who was on duty tonight) is a freaking joke (he hates customers)... Sorry dude, you picked the wrong job or try to find another job where you are more happy!!!
Tonight we decided to order take out (as usual)... They lost our order and hubby asked for a discount since they messed up our order. The manager declined asking us why he should do it for us? You really ask a customer why you should just do your freaking job right???!!! Told them that we would call corporate and all of the sudden he became gentle as a little cat..
